Rihanna performance of new single ‘Rude Boy’ on The Ellen Degeneres Show aired a few moments ago. Check it out above…
While, Ms. Fenty’s stage presence is improving (stiff whining and all), her live vocals are still not the business. I was a little baffled as to why she was holding the mic to her mouth instead of her nose, as her vocals were extra nasal today.
Still, as the age old saying goes, people will only believe in you, once you start belieivng in yourself; and, judging by this performance and some of her more recent showings, she’s starting to believe in her performance capabilities. Now, if only her talent would catch up with her self-belief, then we may be onto something.

I’m not a Rihanna fan AT ALL, but even I have to admit that this performance was really good. She sounded like she usually does; no better no worse. I think it was a really good performance from her. I enjoyed watching it. People are gonna be haters, RiRi, just keep doing your thing.

STOP HATING SAM!! I swear sometimes I wonder what she “did” to you that has made it your life’s work (as far as thatgrapejuice is concerned) to hate on this chick. Don’t get me wrong, I agree with your assessments of her vocals; but I feel that alot of her contemporaries are not the best singers either. Some are great performers (which I think she is, she’s just stage shy which was not the case with the Good Girl Gone Bad album/tour), others are great singers; but there are few that are both. If you’re looking for great singers visit Julliard (NYU, Oberlin, Berklee and other music schools) – that’s where true vocal talent exists.
This performance was just fine. Her vocals were good – and yea they were nasal, but that’s her style. Some singers are throaty, others oversing, but nasal’s her s*** and it has made her successful. I would like to see her do more dancehall moves (because she is a capable dancer), but I thought that she owned this performance.
Please do not mistake me for being a Rihanna-Stan, because I have better things to with my time; but I have to give credit where credit is due, and call out unnecessary “hate” when I see it.

This performance is an improvement on the usual walk, pose and hair flip shtick that she has always been doing with her up-tempo songs but it is STILL embarrassingly lackluster compared to other female artists who actually put effort into performances beyond just dancing stiffly when and if the mood strikes at some point on stage, and placing and replacing the mike on a mike stand (a mike stand? really??).
This is not about me being a “stan” of anybody. The only person I “stan” for is Michael Jackson and there aint no comparing to Michael Jackson. But the point MUST be made that for EVERY other female artist within 10 years of Rihanna’s age (and even some outside, like Janet) there is actual EFFORT put into learning some choreography and breaking a sweat on stage when performing a song like this.
The fact that people are impressed with this performance because it’s “good for her” is laughable. It’s easy to dismiss this as “hating” but really use a couple brain cells for once and think about it for a second… I’m not saying anything that isn’t true.
How is it that Rihanna can still get away with this??

I feel I should add though, that i actually liked her previous performances on Ellen where she had energy and ran through the crowd interacting with the audience. I thought that that was a sign that things were looking up for her in terms of her stage presence and performance ability.

every artist don’t have to be the same or do the same things. Some artist love breaking a sweat and getting down. That is not rihanna’s thing, so if she wants to place and replace her mike and strut around, I say do the damn thing girl. Rihanna is rihanna, and them other ones are them other ones. It hasn’t stopped her from selling records and churning out the hits, so obviously its not a top priority for her or her fans.

Mm I always say stage presence is something you either have or you don’t. Say what you want about Ciara’s voice(which is better than Rihanna’s) but when that chick gets on stage, she draws in the crowd and holds their attention for the entire time she performs and gets them hype. that’s what makes a good performer.

No one respects her because she isn’t very talented. I feel like she’s had some measure of success, and she seems nice so that’s a good thing. Just to make something clear, I’m not a ‘ghetto individual’. I post on this blog because it’s interesting to read people’s opinions about artists. Not only am I educated, but raised far from the ghetto. Not that I don’t have love for all of my ‘ghetto individuals’!
Perez Hilton is not someone who has a very respectable opinion, he says quite a few offensive, trashy things on his blog.
The reason I agree that no-one (or not many) people respect her is because of the way she is treated as an artist.
She came out with an interview after being silent about her attack right before her album came out, and I think people found that a little opportunistic. I didn’t hear many people speak out in support of that.
She has a distinct voice, but cannot carry a tune very well. I’ve never head any artists praise her singing ability.
I’ve never heard any artists or insustry people praise her dancing ability, or stage performances.
They might say, “I listen to rihanna” or “I like rihanna’s music” But let’s keep in mind that she does not play any instruments, nor does she write much of her own music or produce it.
So what they are really saying is that they like they way she is put together as a package, and they might like her as a person. THAT IS NOT RESPECT AS AN ARTIST FROM THE INDUSTRY.
People can like her, but why try to make her something she isn’t? She’s cute, nice and seems to have fun performing. That’s it.

She had nothing to do with the writing of “Run This Town”, she won that Grammy the same way she has won all of them… being associated with other people who actually have talent.

It should only ever take 2 songwriters maximum for a song. When your name starts coming in 3rd, 4th and 5th then you pretty much just came up with the title and little else.

I can say, that I don’t think the writing on her part of the song was too sophisticated (sorry).
But I haven’t heard Rated R because I only catch some on the songs on-line or on television, so I can’t judge that writing.
I do know that a lot of times artists get some song writing credit, even if they aren’t the main writers. Either way, she does write some and that’s better than nothing at all!
Even though she’s not my favorite I’m still rooting for her, if she steps it up….its better for music in general! But I’m not holding my breath…..

Don’t argue with these crazy people. I am going to tell you the same thing its not that serious. Like I said I am not her fan, but I can clearly see that people pick on her especially after the incident. we have a blame the victim mentality in this country. we also have way to many people with low self esteem so them Rhianna and bey being in the world with them is to much. Now if they spent this much time hating people like bin laden a woman beater, a r***** or a child m******* it would make since. but when you spend time hating someone who has done nothing to you but exist, that’s a problem. some on this website including sam trent and any other n** case on this site who get their daily jollies being negative all the time need to to have a seat on a couch and talk about it. because something is missing,
This is the thing, people will argue that ‘singing’ and ‘dancing’ is something that’s a personal preference.
This is true to a certain extent. I don’t quite understand how people argue that she can sing when singing has always included: being on-key, having a voice that does not crack when notes are sung, and being able to hear the singer without amplification or computer editing software. Talking, is now considered ‘singing’.
I don’t understand how people argue she can dance if she appears stiff, often does the exact same moves with little variation, and does not appear very smooth/fluid.
If this is the type of singing and dancing people like today, fine. But I believe people like her more as a person, than as a performer. I don’t think there is anything wrong with that. What I don’t like is people trying to justify why they like her by using things like singing and dancing….when it does not seem to add up. Even based on something like ‘personal preference’.
I think the thing that bothers me most is that it seems like the record companies are winning. They invest all this money in an artist that doesn’t have too much going vocally or dance wise, and then control them like a puppet, changing them when people get bored with them. It’s like having an ever lasting cash cow. Re-make them when people get bored because they are mostly image.
I don’t know, it just seems like a scheme to me! I don’t blame Rihanna for that at all…..I just think it’s important to think about/consider.
