From The Vault: Mary J. Blige – ‘Not Gon’ Cry’

This week’s From The Vault clip is Mary J. Blige‘s 1996 smash ‘Not Gon Cry’. Lifted from the ‘Waiting To Exhale’ soundtrack, the video interpolates scenes from the hit movie, focussing visually and lyrically on the storyline of Angela Bassett’s character. Check out the Wayne Maser directed video above…

Classic! Despite being only 7 years old when this came out, this has a lot of nostalgic value for me. I vividly remember jamming to this way back in the day (thanks to my Big Sis, who loved the TLC’s, Jodeci’s and Mary’s – all of who made the 90’s so memorable). R&B at its best.

I love Mary J. Blige and Angela Bassett…The scene in which Bernadine (played by Angela Bassett) burns her husband’s clothes is the scene of all scenes. One of the best ever scenes in cinematic history… This is one of my favourite songs. It has so much feeling.

Mary is the truth! The one and only queen of hip hop. I love this song. The thing that I love most about Mary is her growth, she went from being the insecure girl from the ghetto, to being the confident strong woman, that knows who she is, that’s the journey of life. Some people never make it that far as we can see.

I bet it was Kendu who gave her the title of this song AFTER she punched HIM in the face – as we ALL saw on that 2-minute video!

I’m pretty sure the Waiting To Exhale soundtrack dropped in 1995, not 1996. This song was featured in the movie and soundtrack before it was placed on Mary’s Share My World Album.
