Directed by Melina, the clip, if I’m to be entirely honest, is both a hit and miss affair. Unfortunately, for the Bajan model, it’s more the latter. Getting the ‘good’ out of the way first, the Pop Art look and feel of the video works exceptionally well, and Ms. Fenty certainly gives what is perhaps her most animated performance in any of her videos yet. Despite this, the vid still manages to be distinctly underwhelming. The 21 year old promised much in the way of choreography for the up-tempo cut, yet served up little more than stiff whining and the usual model-esque poses. Overall, not a bad effort, simply one which leaves much to be desired. Oh RiRi….

Nice song, nice vid. But, Melina should be very careful about what directing elements she repeats for whom. You can’t use elements from Solange and Beyonce videos and put them in a Rihanna video. I’m a B stan but I hate when people instantly assume I don’t like her because of that. This song is one of my favourite of the moment – despite Rhi not being an artist I particularly care for. The vid is pretty damn good too…
By her standards, anyway. I appreciate the fact tnat for the first time in a long time she actually danced, but I’ve seen hundreds of other girls doing what she did in the vid at parties. And some people are acting like it’s the hottest thing since Thriller. I would have liked it more if she’d done a bit of a routine with a couple of girls; and in fact, that’s what I expected when I heard this vid was gonna be more dancehall – something along the lines of the Pon De Replay vid.
But, still. I must applaud Rhi for the above; she’s serving it a lot more than I’ve ever seen her do before. Now let’s just pray that she can do the same live – though, by past performances, I doubt it.

I try to never compare the two artists; they’re starkly different and are coming with different sounds.. And I’ve met many people who like both. Just by saying that this is a good vid, doesn’t mean that they’re saying one is better than the other (although IMO B is better by far).

It’s reasonable to watch a video of an artist you like or have interest in. However, my question to some of you: If you’ve stated multiple times on previous Rihanna threads that she can’t sing or dance WHY…EVEN…WATCH…THE…VIDEO?
It was ok it could’ve been better. She could’ve taken the darker route and it would’ve been better. The colors were too much if she’s tryin to give us headaches, and epileptics seisures she has suceeded. She has too many different elements from other ppls music videos. I love the song but the video killed it for me. I’ll jus stick to listening to the album for now.
@smh, so you’re the only one who has seen real dancehall? the point is that rihanna is doing a video, so you don’t expect her to do real dancehall, the way its really done in a video ment for tv do you.? Do you ever see dancehall videos being played on mainstream tv? its a reason why, that type of stuff would not be allowed to be shown with out some type of parental advisory. What rihanna was doing was simply whining to her song, and she didn’t need to skin out, c*** out her batty, do the hot wuk and all of that. She was keeping it simple and fun. BTW, you guys kill me acting like you want rihanna to pull out her whole arsenal of dance moves in a 3 minute video. Its just a video, a fun addition to her music, and rihanna did a good job.

the video was cute…but when people say that artists should always change up their styles, Britney hasnt changed, Bon Jovi hasn’t changed,loads of other super long standing artists have not changed and their fans appreciate that, so to say that an artists has to constantly change up to stay “relevant” isn’t really true

No one said they have to change to be relevant. Its just that rihanna likes to change things up and try things, and that is something that is good to me. I like seeing artist bring something new and fresh and go outside of the box that people think they have them in. It is more interesting. Who wants to be stuck with the same look and sound for years and years. After awhile you get stuck in a rut, and finally realize that, The only thing that’s constant is change. And to your above references. Britney spears have definitely changed. from the kiss me baby one more time, to her new song 3. you can’t say she is still the same. and so have bon jovi, he looks the same, but his music, and style has broadend to reach some of the younger generation. To each his own, you can’t expect rihanna to do the same things as bonjovi who is from a totally different generation than she is. WHen bon jovi started out, ri ri wasn’t even thinking of being conceived. Personally that’s what I like about rihanna. Her versatility, you never know what she is going to come with next, and her music gives me a little bit of everything.

I sort of liked the video for its concept of abstract out of the box with color and black and white. That was cool. And Rihanna looked nice as always. But other than that she didn’t do much. The sad part is she didn’t move that much, but because she never really moves that much she looks like she is doing a whole lot. She winded a bit, popped out her but a bit, and did some more model poses, which isn’t much. Cuz she ain’t wind that hard and she don’t have enough ass to really even pop. It looked like she was trying to imitate some Beyonce moves, but couldn’t handle it. It was sort of Jamaican themed with the colors and the dancing, but she is from Barbados. And their colors are blue and yellow (gold). And i am pretty sure they have some of their own dance moves. She representin a country that ain’t even hers. Why don’t she put barbados more on the map. Help increase their tourism more.

@jjlova06 whining is the dance moves all over the caribbean, so what do you mean she could have some of their dance moves. Plus red green and gold, is the colors all of the caribbean rep. Its not just jamaican, it is part of the rastafarian movement which is prevalent all over the islands. and a west indian is a west indian it don’t matter what island you from, we all have the same cultural background.
@DAWON- h**, have a seat. unlike u, i read. the major magazines ALL have praised “Rated R” even more than ANY of Beyonce’s albums! “Dangerously in Love” is top heavy and boring. “B’Day” is fun and ghetto. and “I Am… Sasha Fierce” is a mix between those two aesthetics. why can’t Beyonce find some middle ground?? if she isn’t ghetto, she’s extremely BORING.

Okay im a fan of Beyonce but some of you “Bey bots” have got to stop! I bet you losers couldn’t wait to watch the video just so you could trash it, probably been on the computer all day waiting for Sam to post it! A lot of Bey stans (not fans) are hypocrites, quick to trash every other female artist, but wanna call everybody a “hater” or preach some “black women tear each other down” s*** when someone has something less than great to say about Beyonce. As for the “Rude Boy” video, i liked it, except for the black and white part during the bridge, it just seemed out of place. Fashion was on point as usual, and i thought the whining she did fit the song, but im guessing some people were expecting a full out dance video. My fav video off “Rated R” so far!
VIDEO IS FIRE! At least her ass didn’t try to redo “Single Ladies” two more times like Beyonce did with “Ego” and “Diva” (two girls dancing on each side in black & white). Rihanna innovates, and visually, this is one of the most interesting videos I’ve seen in awhile.
I’m not a Beyonce or Rihanna “stan”, but I enjoy them both. I get really irritated with Beyonce fans who think that B created EVERYTHING. She’s cute, but she’ll NEVER make videos as groundbreaking as the woman I “stan” for: JANET DAMITA JO JACKSON.

Maybe it’s just me but this video wasn’t s*** at all. It was sleezy and kind of trashy. I’m not really a Rihanna fan but if she did a good video I would say so. Cold Case Love, for example, I feel is a great, real song. This is garbage. I just feel that as a woman, ESPECIALLY a black woman, you have a responsibility to other females that look up to you. We already have enough people telling us that black women are less than. (First rappers and their videos and now John Mayer and his ignorant ass) So for her to make a video and a song like this is just perpetuating the enduring stereotype that black women are Jezzebels. People look up to her, young girls look up to her. It’s one thing to be free and unashamed of the fact that you’re a sexual being, we all are, but now you’re gonna have young girls walking around singing “get it up rude boy is you big enough”. Thank you.
