Janet & Mariah To Collaborate…On New Movie!

Published: Tuesday 23rd Mar 2010 by Sam

Our good friends over at AOL Black Voices attended the premiere of Tyler Perry’s ‘Why Did I Get Married Too’ yesterday. While, there the ever-reliable outlet nabbed an exclusive from Perry regarding his latest movie – ‘For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf (Editor: Yes, that really is the title).

Perhaps most interesting about the announcement, was Perry’s confirmation of the film’s cast – which is stellar to say the very least. Appearing in the movie will be…Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Whoopi Goldberg, Phylicia Rashad, Jurnee Smollett, Kimberly Elise, Kerry WashingtonLoretta Devine and Macy Gray. Find out all about the movie, via AOL, after the jump…

Black Voices has learned that writer/director/producer Tyler Perry has selected the cast for next film, ”For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf.

At last night’s premiere for his latest film, ‘‘Why Did I Get Married Too?,’ the black box-office maverick revealed that the cast will include Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Whoopi Goldberg, Phylicia Rashad, Jurnee Smollett, Kimberly Elise, Kerry WashingtonLoretta Devine and Macy Gray.

Based on Ntozake Shange‘s award-winning 1975 play, the film is scheduled to shoot in June in New York with a possible winter 2010/ 2011 release date

The riveting play, consisting of a series of poems performed through a cast of nameless women, known only by a color — deal with such subjects as love, abandonment, rape, and abortion, garnered much acclaim, becoming the toast of Broadway when it opened at The Booth Theater in 1976.

It later morphed into an Emmy Award nominated television special and is still being performed around the world.

Elise and Carey are the only two that made the cut from Perry’s initial wish list that he mentioned back in September 2009, which initially included 16-time Grammy Award winner Beyonce Knowles, Academy Award winner Halle Berry and media queenOprah Winfrey.

“Making a film of ‘For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow is Enuf’ is a dream come true for me,” Perry said about the project. “Ntozake Shange’s play is a magnificent tribute to the strength and dignity of women of color, and I think audiences of all generations will be able to recognize and embrace the experiences these women represent. Creatively, this movie is one of the most exciting undertakings of my career.”

As previously reported by Black Voices, ‘For Colored Girls’ will be the first project for 34th Street Films, Perry’s new production company, which is housed at Lionsgate.

It pretty much goes without saying, but this is a must-watch on-paper alone! As great as the cast is (Mariah & Janet in the same movie! Amazing actresses such as Phylicia Rashad and Whoopi), it’s awesome to see Tyler Perry upping his game as a film-maker. Afterall, as good as Madea can be, this really is taking it to that important next level. Can’t wait to see this!

Randomness: With filming set to begin in June, I’m guessing a new Janet LP is some way off. Same for Mariah, although in her case its probably for the best.

This sounds really good. So many amazing names tied to this film, it’s exciting. I’m really hoping this won’t delay Janet’s new album though. 🙁 In Mariah’s case, I agree Sam, she needs to drop the music for a bit and focus on other things (acting being the perfect choice for her.)

  7. Reasonable Voice March 23, 2010

i’m not excited. I’m scared actually. For Colored Girls isn’t some chitlin circut coonery. He must have paid Ntozake a LOT of money to get his hands on the rights to this. I mean, this is like, I don’t know, like, Jud Apatow directing V***** Monologues. Good Lord, I’m praying that Tyler Perry doesn’t butcher this. And than God, he didn’t cast Beyonce.

  11. Chaz March 23, 2010

I can’t take this!!! Two queens of pop and mavericks like Phylicia and Whoopi??? I agree with Reasonalbe Voice in that I hope Tyler Perry steps his game up and comes up out of his Madea mentality to show us some growth and improvement as a director!

  12. truth March 23, 2010

SOUNDS LIKE CRAP. WHEN U HAVE MAINLY MUSIC STARS THE END RESULT IS STUPID. DONT LIKE TYLER AS DIRECTOR, HE SUXX AND HIS FILMS ALWAYS GETS BAD REVIEWS, NAME ONE FILM HE DIRECTED THAT REVIEWERS LIKED? EXACTLY… NONE! APPEARS TO BE ANOTHER DUMB COMEDY, EXPECT MEDEA PART #100. SIGH…

  13. gh_Mikie March 23, 2010

I agree with “Reasonable Voice”…this is actually scary, I cant bank on Mariah’s acting skills, she is going to destroy a classic! OMG! Tyler Peeerrrry…Tyler Perry! dont do it! Reconsider! Read some litera-ture on the subject! lol
But on a more serious note…I dont think this is going to work…man this film will kill the classic! Leave it be! leave it be! *sob-sob*

  14. Kevin March 23, 2010

  15. Geronimo March 23, 2010

  16. Music Maker March 23, 2010

@TRUTH why are you hating, did you forget about Precious? He didn’t direct it but he dud help get it out there and that is worth something.

Who cares about MC? It’s ALL about the following women; Whoopi Goldberg, Phylicia Rashad, Jurnee Smollett, and Kerry Washington. I can’t believe it, this made me sooo happy.

  17. geeMan March 23, 2010

I will reserve full judgement upon seeing the film. Glad to that Mimi and Janet will be apart of a great cast. As for those doubting Mimi her skills are getting better Tyler saw something otherwise I doubt he would put in such a classic with legendary actresses. Do you guys know Beyonce was considered for a role as well as Halle Berry, and Oprah Winfrey.

  18. Stoney-Brie March 23, 2010

I’m so excited!! this is great news!

i know Janet will def deliver but MiMi i will wait and see.

Tyler perry movies does not flop…

  23. TheBlogManLAMB March 23, 2010

Mariah Is Half-Black. Don’t Doubt Mariah, She Can Act. My Thing Is, The Title. I Hope That’s Not The Official Title. Beyonce Is A Worse Actress Than Mariah, So I’m Glad She Wasn’t Cast. Well, Whatever. We’ll See.

  24. LICKE MARAJ March 23, 2010

SAM I SUGGEST YOU PUT TAGS ON YOUR STORIES BECAUSE http://WWW.TOYAZ-WORLD.NET STEALS YOUR STORIES AND WHOEVER THAT IS @YouPutTheLimeInTheCoconut
    IS TOYAZ INFORMANT

  25. B March 23, 2010

I’m excited for this. I’m sure it will be nothing like any of Tyler’s other movies since he didn’t write it. Not that I have a problem with his films, but I’m sure this will be different.

  26. cash March 23, 2010

it will be called ” For Colored Girls” , the play is actually titled ” For Colored Girls Who Have Considered S****** When the Rainbow is Enuf” & has won many accolades and has been nominated for an Emmy. For such a historic play, it will be great to see it come to life for everyone to see.

For those who don’t know much about Mariah, she is irish & Afro-venezulan.
people commonly refer to her acting skills in “Glitter” which wasn’t the best film, but then we have ” Tennessee” & “Precious” (both lee Daniel’s films) which have gained her praise by critics and viewers alike. Precious went on to win countless awards.

    beyonce over any of these ladies would be a joke, a J O K E .

  27. G.U.S March 23, 2010

    I like it!!!

  28. YouPutTheLimeInTheCoconut March 23, 2010

@Licke Maraj, why in the world are you even bringing up an entirely different blog on this site? Blogs get their stories from other sources all the time, including ThatGrapeJuice, so why are you making yourself look dumb? And I’m Toya’s “informant”? So now I’m working for Toya’s blog?? Wow…I don’t even know what to say to this, lmao.

  29. luvsong March 23, 2010

since it’s a big cast, i’m thinking it won’t take much time to do, however Janet likes to concentrate on 1 thing at time.. so we’ll see

  30. bobby from bulgaria March 23, 2010

Mariah also has a role in “Wisegirls” and she does very well there…

    You gotta watch it…

  31. KOOPER March 24, 2010

  32. jack hart March 24, 2010

i dont think Tyler Perry is the correct director for this film. I’ve seen the play mutiple times over the years. I hope he doesn’t medeaized this classic work. i’m very fearful @ this point
