Though revered as a performer, it goes without saying that Jennifer Lopez‘s lack of vocal prowess has caused her to be the butt of many a joke.
Well, it appears the ultimate punch line has been delivered; a studio engineer – none too pleased with Lopez’s supposed diva behaviour while recording – has released raw audio of her trying her hand at Barbra Streisand’s ‘Enough Is Enough’. Let’s just say, the result was not pretty. Check it out for yourself below (via Perez Hilton):
Ouch! That was oh-so-embarrassing; her apparent shrugging off of the matter was not convincing in the slightest. Ol’ J.Lo was embarrassed – as she should have been. I mean, I was initially in two minds about posting this, as I legitimately felt sorry for her. However, I hit ‘post’ when I reminded myself about the fact that singers should actually be able to sing!
Granted I’m sure few artists have flawless studio sessions, the vast majority still turn in – at the bare minimum – commendable live efforts. I challenge anyone to point to one instance when Ms. Lopez has actually sounded good live – baring in mind she rarely ever sings live. I’m waiting…
We’re in a day and age where artists have to be able to, at least, try and turn in decent live + recorded vocals – something which may explain Jennifer’s lack of success in recent years. In any case…awful. Maybe this will serve as a challenge for her to better herself prior to trying to recapture her past-successes under the Def Jam umbrella.
Tidbit: I’m sure the names Janet and Ciara will come up in some capacity. However, in each of their cases, they’ve proven they can hold their own live too. I’m just saying…

I must be the only person, but I don’t think she sounds that bad here. She hit a few bum notes, and to her credit she was not so tone-deaf that she didn’t realize it immediately, stopped herself and laughed. The tone of her voice is actually quite pleasant imho.
I’m not a Rihanna fan – not in the least – but at least she almost always sings live (I’m saying ‘almost’ to be on the safe side, but I’ve never seen her mime) – and at least she sounds practically the same live, although she isn’t the best singer.
I prefer JLO all round, but girl can’t sing.

I agree with Miles… while she hit some bad notes… it was not the train wreck I was expecting… when she was on…s he was on… has decent tone and pleasant sounding voice… this post is pretty much stating what we already know… JLo is NOT a vocalist… she’s a dancer who sings… she can carry a tune when needed… but is not likely to blow anyone away with vocal prowess (although I do think that one of her best vocals EVER is on her first album in the song “No Me Ames” w/ (coincidentally?) Sam, i’m no longer confused on how you feel about Jennifer Lopez. Jennifer did not become famous for her signing (she’s toured once with her husband and done one concert dvd…). She has got to where she peaked because of her charisma, just as Britney Spears, Madonna or singers who aren’t known for their voices sell millions of records.
That was horrible. But that’s really unfair for the audio engineer to do that when i’m sure there would be other singers who have had just as bad moments. Everybody thinks this is American Idol. Jennifer Lopez can sing – she’s nowhere the powerhouse you guys almost expect her to be, but she can sing to be a performer. In fact, I could imagine hearing the last bit of that audio on the CD – that’s how she sounds and her music is obviously making at least some people happy. Nobody said you have to listen to it – just don’t press play – so i’ll just assume people are going out of their way to pass judgment to attain some perverse consolation for their own insecurities and weaknesses.
What’s probably worse, Sam, is that you try to cover it up as if you’re taking some objective, middle-stance, but every time you make a post on her you always point out her vocals (despite cleverly stating that she’s not known for her vocals) or her failure as if to provoke negative conversation.

I can now see how pathetic this generation is to think that this “singing” is acceptable. Society has been conditioned with hearing so many mediocre artists that the level of singing standards are low. As far as i’m concerned, Lopez sounds terrible in and out of the studio Yes, she probably shouldn’t have tried to sing that song but quite frankly she isn’t a singer. Where are the real artists at?
She sounds like a singer learning a song. Hitting bum notes and memorizing note progressions is a part of that process. I’m not a singer myself, but know several singers in Broadway shows. Lord, you should hear them tackle a new piece of music. It sounds a lot like this. This was a low blow Sam. Judge the finished product at least and not a moment in the studio where she’s trying to sort things out.

@ Sam: Janet and Ciara are not better vocalists than Jennifer. To say they have proven they can hold their own live is an exaggeration. They have only proven that they are good at recreating their studio recordings when performing live. However, both the recordings and the live performances consist of weak vocals with little range. I don’t understand why the writers on this site are so easy on people like Janet and Ciara, who are mainly dancers or entertainers as opposed to credible vocalists. But then you are hard on Rihanna who may not be a great vocalists because of her harsh tone but at least has a stronger voice than Janet or Ciara. You should be consistent in your criticism.

this was before the head mic. Janet is not a belter but she does know how to use what she has and that’s the point of being an artist..using what you’ve been given to hone your craft because it’s art not a game to just play around with. This is why some artist have CONSISTENT longevity in the business and the rest always eventually fall off.

I like J-Lo alot but I will NEVER have delusions of her being a singer. She sings about as well as any average person but most people don’t have recording contracts and have sold millions of albums. I really think you should be better than average to be considered a singer and obtaining a recording contract, but it seems as if record labels disagree. I like that she at least recognized that she sounded like s*** so at least she has an ear but she’s been doing this for far too long to not be a more competent singer.
We need to demand more from our “singers” and “performers” or the labels will continue to feed us s*** and tell us its a 5 star meal. Just because someone has a contract, sells a lot of records, etc. does not mean they are somehow an excellent ARTIST. Most people only listen for the beat of the song and will skip over the quality of the vocal that is being delivered. It’s sad we make excuses for someone’s lack of singing ability and then still listen to their music and make them a star. I kinda hate what’s going on in popular music right now, it makes me sad:(

The thing about Jennifer is that she doesn’t know where her voice stands. She’s not sure if she should sing low or sing high, so she usually leaves it in the middle where it sounds like she’s talking the song not singing it. She’s knows she’s not a singer, but someone who has learned to sing probably the reason why she laughed and was sure to ask the producer/engineer how to hit the note.

She recorded this a while back a believe. It was intended to be a duet with Anastasia. JLO’s voice is pretty when she’s on key. She sang live a lot while promoting Brave. She sang Hold It,Don’t Drop It on Good Morning America and she sang live on Saturday Night Live recently but didn’t sound great.
