New Song: Jennifer Lopez – ‘Story of My Life’

Published: Saturday 13th Mar 2010 by Sam

With Jennifer Lopez’s deal with Island Def Jam almost  finalised, it appears there may be some hope yet for the singer/actress’ serially delayed ‘Love?’ LP after all. Sources close to the project confirm that the mother of two is currently tweaking the record, with there also being the possibility of renaming it for its Def Jam release. In any case, a new cut from the album’s recording sessions has surfaced in the form of the Stargate produced ‘Story of My Life’.

If ever there was a case, point, example of the problems which arise when an artist strays too far from their lane, it would be J.Lo. Put simply, this song is just not cutting it. Everything from her monotonous, disinterested vocals, to the lacking production, make for this one to be a no-no.

Lopez is a ‘performer’ as opposed to a vocalist; hence (much like Janet) her material at this particular stage of her career should focus on her strengths – which is uptempo club-destined tracks (an area vast enough to still experiment within). I say this because this dreary-drivel she’s been trying to serve up as the hotness for a while has, quite frankly, been cold – ‘Story of My Life’ included.

At this junction the only thing able to salvage Ms. Lopez’s musical relevance would be more tracks in the vein of the only solid cut I’ve heard from her ‘Love?’ sessions – ‘Hooked On You’.

This album is going to be horrible. The only goos song Ive heard so far is “What Is Love”

  2. Stoney-Brie March 13, 2010

omg whatever happened to J.Lo is the very same thing that’s gon happen to Bey..

  3. Ghetto Fab March 13, 2010

    @Stoney-Brie

You got that right. Beystealing is on her way out. And is soon to be in the same place as JLO. Looking hot but nobody gives a damn anymore. JLo needs to leave the singing to someone else. She’s a much better actress anyway.

  4. Kevin March 13, 2010

I would LOVE to know if JLO actually reads these comments on the 100’s of blogs. these songs are terrible, why make an album that is destined to fail……?

  5. 12345 March 13, 2010

    @stoney-brie
    it happens to everyone..

  6. LisaS March 13, 2010

Uh Sam , what are you talking about. Janet had great slow and mid-tempo songs. “I Get So Lonely”, “Together Again”, “Anytime, Any Place” and I could go on. So don’t sit and compare JLO to Janet because Janet has done it across all boards. Just admit that Jenny has NO SINGING CAPABILITIES!!! Janet has her flaws in her song selection, and that is what holds her back from being as successful as she use to be.

  7. sickwitit March 13, 2010

you right she need to stick to ‘waiting for tonight’ type songs

  8. Steeve87 March 13, 2010

    LOVE IT !

  9. Monroe March 13, 2010

    @Stoney-Brie

LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!! She’s been in the game for over 10 years, she’s accomplished so much. She can leave if she wants, but she’s going no where yet. Her popularity is raising every day. You might hate Bey but the people that buy her albums and go on her tours beg to differ. So Dahling stop hating.

  10. Geronimo March 13, 2010

    @ Stoney-Brie

at least Bey is more intertaining that JLo, too much hype no talent, i think she should continue to make babies her time is UP.

I think you should compare JLo to rih since both of them have no talent the only difference is rih has no $$$$

  11. kitty March 13, 2010

Well I like it, I keep listening to it over and over and I like it.

What I see is that its a grown up song for , I’ve been a Jlo fan from way back and I am not 20yrs old maybe its why I can relate to this song.

Of all the leaked tracks………my least fav….is hooked on you. I am no expert but Jlo and Janet must find their grown up audience and leave the kids to gaga and Bey

  12. Monroe March 13, 2010

I love JLO, own her albums but I have to admit she has no fan base now, she neglected her core audience, She has no faithful fanbase. JLO needs to bring fire to the table and reinvent herself. JLO has no grown up music LOL. I assume she might duet with Rihanna, that’ll give her a boast with single sales but not album sales, as we all know Rihanna isn’t a fast album seller. JLO make movies, reinvent yourself, bring fire, work on your music and you will be back.

  13. Ben March 13, 2010

Yeah, I don’t know about this one. Man, she used to have some cool party hits back in the day. Her first 3 albums were were best ones. But for future reference, Sam, let us judge these songs first before giving your own opinion, it kinda ruins the whole article.

  14. Princess March 13, 2010

Why she sould keep doing the sort of songs like Waiting for tonight? it`s not 2000 anymore.10 years had passed so it`s good to make a try new music. This song is not one of my favriotes from the up coming album but it`s not that bad either….i think the album is gonna be awsome cos i heared good singles from it like What is love?,Hooked on You, The greatest part of me etc and p;ease stop comparing Jen with B costheir totally diffrent!

  15. aj March 13, 2010

^Yeh all her hits seemed original back then. Now all her new music sounds like everything out there. I guess maybe Jennifer was bolder with her sound/direction back then??
I agree with Ben. I barely gave this song a chance based on what Sam said about the song. Maybe you should make it so that we can listen to the song and then you have that “read more” option to read and post opinions..

  16. Dilla March 13, 2010

J-Lo is over and her fan base is non-existent lol.

  17. Junior in Jamaica March 13, 2010

Trying to pigeon-hole a 40 yr old woman into singing club type songs is so wrong.

Jennifer should be free to experiment and do different things. Janet sure did. Janet was not all dance…she has some really nice slower songs as someone else pointed out. And whether or not Janet doing the dance route will work for her, is yet to be seen. Until she comes out that is. Hope it’s believable

That said…I enjoy this song…sure her vocals are a little muted but nice. Funny enough…J.Lo’s vocals compared to Janet are “stronger”…Janet sings so whispery all the times…but somehow it worked for her.

  18. Jeff March 13, 2010

I think this song is great. J Lo is not in the Celine Dion/Mariah Carey league vocally, but you can’t say she doesn’t have a voice. I think she sounds great on this track. Her last album really showcased her voice as well. People hate to see change, but she’s not always going to release club bangers, which I see as growth–not a bad thing. I wish her lots of luck. And for the record, “Louboutins” should have been huge–it was a HOT single!!

  19. luvsong March 14, 2010

if the goal is to sell records then she should def do a club record/uptempo…this would easily work considering her fanbase. she can sing well enough, she seems to be set on doing a singer/songwriter type album. right now she should definately go for the hit’s, if she’s joining defjam

  20. Luis March 14, 2010

why does everytime someone makes something a little bit different it is taken as a failure? it may be a commercial failure. that song you said she should stick with is pure garbage. open your eyes people.

i’m tired of this electro s*** era. we need real music now.

  21. ash jones March 14, 2010

why does everyone assume that every mid-tempo song is produced by Stargate?
this song is produced by Danja!!!! read in interview from onlinejlofan.

  22. dan March 14, 2010

so true, “hooked on you” could have put her back on top

i listen to it since nearly a year now and it still goes hard

would have been a great comeback single, but always wrong decisions…like mariah

  23. Travita K. March 14, 2010

    That song is a miss…

  24. FUSION March 14, 2010

She’s crap – always has been. I don’t even know why I bothered listening to the song….thats 2 minutes (yes i could not bear any more!) of my life that I’ll never get back!

  25. EXPOSED!!! March 14, 2010

SOUNDS LIKE A MOVIE TRACK CUT WHEN THE CREDITS START ROLLING. SAMPLES OLDER SONGS FROM THE 70’S AND 80’S. AINT BB HOT 100 STUFF.

  26. anonymouss March 14, 2010

    @stoneybrie

girrl, please…dont even try to compare bey to J.h**….at least Beyonce can sing! and THAT is whats gon keep her in the game for years to come….she dont need to just do club tracks all her life to get a hit record, at age forty she gon be cranking out them whitney-like power ballads and she STILL gon sell millions, ya kno why? cuz she got TALENT!

  27. vegasgirl March 14, 2010

J- Lo’s vocals ae so weak she really can’t even handle a song like this. She simply is not a vocalist and that is the truth. The only thing that makes me upset at her is that in all that time off, she did not improve her vocal game…I don’t get it. Anytime an artist steps away from the spotlight knowing they want to re-enter it, they should really step their game up and she simply has not. Hire a vocal coach instead of spending the labels money on having to make the voice sound better in the studio.
Most of these artists today wouldn’t have made it a long time ago because Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughn didn’t have technology to help them, but that was a long time ago! There have always been artists that have been more successful than they are talented, so the cycle just continues. BTW, I actually like J-Lo and want her to have a successful comeback, but I’m not delusional and I see her for what she is , a perormer not a singer.

  28. Donna C. March 14, 2010

YOU ALL SOUND VERY IGNORANT TO WHAT MUSIC IS. BEYONCE CAN SING BUT SHE IS NOT A POWER VOCALIST YOU PEOPLE REALLY PUT HER ON A PEDESTAL.. BEYONCE IS AN OK ARTIST AND JUST LIKE EVERY OTHER HUMAN BEING SHE WILL HAVE HER RISE AND FALL I HER CAREER… SHE’S HUMAN!!!!!!!!…. AS FOR J.LO SHE IS A DECENT ARTIST, SHE HAS BEEN LACKING LATELY BUT SHE HAS SOLD MILLIONS OF RECORDS WITH HER FIRST 3 ALBUMS SO OBVIOUSLY SOMEBODY LIKE HER. AND BTW ONE HER MOST SUCCESSFUL SONGS WAS A SLOW BALLAD “ALL I HAVE” .. LOOK IT UP AND KNOW YOUR FACTS BEFORE YOU POST… YOU SHOULD ALSO TRY LISTENING TO “THE ONE” AND “WRONG WHEN YOUR GONE”… VERY NICE SLOW TUNES, ADULT MUSIC..

  29. Ms. CLaY March 14, 2010

I like J.Lo but I’m sorry this song and her voice sounds like pure sh*t!!

  30. miguel March 14, 2010

  31. Jennifer March 15, 2010

  32. Darsys Busey March 15, 2010

o my god! my co: works love this song , very good song congratulations j.lo love you & cant wate for the cd all the way from guyana south america

  33. Eduardo March 17, 2010

Honestly, I’ve always been a Jennifer Lopez fan. Personally, I like this song. Yes it might be slow, but it fits, you know? I understand that maybe its not as up tempo as Gaga’s stuff, but it seems like all the other artists are being cliche. “Story of my Life” has some great lyrics, one can relate to them and be like “this is my song because i feel the same way,” you know?. Love?, i believe will be a good album, I’m really looking forward to it.
    Love you Jennifer =]

  34. marcjacobs03 March 22, 2010

Ok everyone, here me out. Jennifer Lopez is one of the most successful artist in the world. Every artists are different, you cannot compare them. Jennifer Lopez might not have the best voice but she can sing. She have had huge hits for example, “if you had my love”, “all i have”. Every artist will have their highs and lows, you will see beyonce and lady gaga somewhere down this track one day. “Story of my life” is a mid tempo song and it’s a pretty good song. “Louboutins” and “What is love” and “One love” and “hooked on you” are also up there. Everyone has different opinions to everything. “Louboutins” is currently number 3 in the hot dance club(23rd march) it jumped from 7 to 3….and its climbing, whilst “Telephone” by lady gaga went down. Do not hate on Jennifer Lopez, its not worth it. She is who she is and Jennifer Lopez still have her fan base.
