From The Vault: Monica – ‘Don’t Take It Personal’

Published: Sunday 14th Mar 2010 by Sam

This week’s From The Vault clip is Monica‘s 1995 #1 smash ‘Don’t Take It Personal’ – which was lifted from the then teen star’s debut LP ‘Miss Thang’. As I’m sure any R&B lover will know, the song’s reputation proceeds it. Put simply, a classic.

Tidbit: Despite only being 6 or 7 when this dropped, I vividly remember the hype around the then-new talent that was Ms. Monica. To see what a seasoned vocalist and great person she’s grown into before our eyes is a warming feeling.

A sassy little R&B diva in the making just to go back and think Whitney, Celine and Mariah were queens of the game. While Brandy, Aaliyah, and Monica were queens on the rise. This was before Beyonce, Rihanna, or Gaga ever step foot in the game. This song is a real r&b gem. Monica is a real singer too.

It crazy to think Monica recorded that when she was 12 and then got the major deal with LEGEND Clive Davis.

Coming upto three years later 1995 comes and she dropping this single as her first single from debut album Miss Thang.

How many 14yo’s have a U.S hit like that.
Very solid debut album came out at 15yo

Those vocals are just to much at that age.
Great credit must go to the one Dallas Austin who signed her to Rowdy Records and got some great material ready 4her that Clive snapped her up on a joint deal to distribute the album.

Props to producers Tim & Bob who produced 5songs on Miss Thang.

Still Standing is quickly approaching us Team Monica.
    Lets get those pre-orders wooo
