Janelle Monáe Performs ‘Tightrope’ On ‘Ellen’

Published: Wednesday 26th May 2010 by Trent

Janelle Monáe hit the stage on ‘The Ellen Degeneres Show’ recently. The electric entertainer performed ‘Tightrope’ –  the 1st single from her debut LP, ‘The ArchAndroid (Suites II and III of IV)’. The album is set to debut on the Billboard 200  later this week at #21 with projected sales of 17, 751 units according to Hits Daily Double. Check out her performance below:

Yet another strong performance from Monáe. Although not as clean as her performance on ‘The Late Show with David Letterman’, she definitely demonstrated why she stands head and shoulders above almost every entertainer under the age of 25. Regarding her sales, it is not surprising that her album is struggling to make an impact on the charts as she has only recently made her debut on television and most people have yet to develop an idea of who she is an artist. Furthermore, Monáe music and sound is very different from many of the other acts on radio today; something that would take the average listener a while to get accustomed. Besides, the mere fact that she is able to sell a single record under the guidance of Diddy is a miracle in itself.

The album is no 17 on the billboard 200 with 21000 Albums sold. Not bad considering she has no hit single yet

  2. jonstrax May 26, 2010

    *MONAE LOL MY BAD 😛

  3. evening May 26, 2010

wow she is super talented, should have sold a lot more IMO

  4. Bee May 26, 2010

I have to hand it to him, Diddy has finally come to grips with the idea that his strength lye in his ability to hype a artist with real talent and open doors (with his many industry connections) to allow that artist to be seen.

Janelle was smart enough to hold onto to her identity and stay with her own label and creative control.

Go on Diddy open up them doors then SITYOURASSSSALLLLTHEWAYDOWWWWN!!!

love the little nod to james brown

Haha. True about the guidance under Diddy. Lol. NONETHELESS, she is a strong performer/artist. Her album is amazing and very innovative. It’s like a musical soundtrack that is very deep and inspirational. Then again, a lot of people in today’s world live in ignorance. Good music.

I’m so glad that she is getting her shine! About time somebody with real talent hit the scene! Cuz I’m so ready for the supermodel singers to die out! She is a very smart woman, she has her own label, and own recording studio! This is a format that alot of artist need to follow, but that is not going to happen for the simple fact that, all new artist trying to be mainstream are controlled by the labels! She is going to blow up! Considering the fact she is under Diddy doing her own thing is nothing short of amazing! Somebody for once told him, Look son of a b****, your not going to ruin what I worked so hard to establish! Her record sales are not that surprising to me, knowing that not to many people know of her yet, but to be 21 on the billboard is a hell of a good start, and a good sign of things to come!

Miss Monae don’t hurt em, kill they ass!!!!!!!!

  10. Frosted Pearl May 26, 2010

Real music might be on the come back. I love her steeZ!

  11. Frosted Pearl May 26, 2010

Her video for Many Moons is better than any video I can remember besides something classic that Michael Jackson put out. She does a backwards moonwalk that is sick. I think she will do very well. She reminds me of a female Gnarles Barkley when it comes to her musical style. And besides the best music is what most people don’t even know about. You have to dig to find it and once you do it’s like you’ve discovered a hidden treasure.

Her album sales are good. i went to Target and they weren’t even selling it there. I know this will be hard for many to analyze since there aren’t many Independent black female artists out there, but if you think she could have gotten 100k, you’re delusional. She’s a critical darling and that’s gonna keep her buzzing for a long time. I’m already seeing friends on Facebook discovering and posting the video. Once people see her, they will love her. Except for Jim Jones up there who needs to be put down.

  13. Healthy Black Queens May 26, 2010

I can’t believe she sold more than Michelle Williams (Destiny’s Child) did WORLDWIDE, and with Diddy ‘backing’ her. I’m proud of Janelle! Now she’s doing big things on Ellen. It’s great to see such a talent making waves. I hope she goes onwards and upwards.

  14. Rashaan May 26, 2010

WOW! That was an amazing performance! I am going to buy this album right now! And Jim Jones your an IDIOT! Way to go Miss Monae! INCREDIBLE TALENT!

  15. GangsterA May 26, 2010

    Amazing love janelle

  16. AMR May 26, 2010

Great performance as usual! Not as good as the performance she put on David Letterman last week, but still great! Keep rising to the top Janelle!

  17. Ste H May 26, 2010

Annoying and four minutes and ten seconds i’ll want back on my deathbed. Jog on Janelle! Next!

  18. True Blue May 26, 2010

    @ Ste H:

She’s too complex for your non-existent brain, I don’t blame you. Go listen to Nicki Minaj, that’s something that’s more on your intellectual level.

Anyway, prepare to see and hear Janelle everywhere. She is just getting started, if she’s coming to perform at a venue near, take advantage of the opportunity to see her live, cause pretty soon she’ll be so popular that tickets will be extremely hard to come by. Oh, and one more thing…

…HATERS, STEP ASIDE TO THE LEFT, PLEASE.

  19. UGh May 26, 2010

    very good

  20. Fatima May 26, 2010

    @True Blue
Can I love Janelle AND Nicki? 😛

  21. No Ma’am May 26, 2010

Her latest album isnt really all that, It got great reviews so I decided to give it a listen & I only liked like 3 songs: Deap Cotton, Cold war, & Dance or Die. I dont like Tightrope. I give it the album a 6, 7 tops.

  22. No Ma’am May 26, 2010

21,000 copies huh?, thats kinda good but kinda bad. I would have guessed at least 60K promo or no promo.

  23. Jim Jones May 26, 2010

ANYWAYS.. SHE STILL SUCKS!! Sorry haters!! I listened to her whole album and WHAT A FREAKING WASTE OF MY TIME!!!

I do not recommend her album!

  24. Gucci May 27, 2010

Love her. Sales don’t mean s*** when you have an amazing imagination, sound, style, voice, and talent. <3 But she needs to drop Diddy and hook up with someone who is actually going to give her some steam.

  25. likeCAESAR May 27, 2010

Ummm…epic flop. I actually like the song, but its not new or innovative in anyway. Neither is her performance style. Its like she is copying james brown completely. I dig it but I dunno is that makes her music “real” or her a “great performer”. Maybe a great imitator.

  26. likeCAESAR May 27, 2010

Oh yea…the best part of the song is when she says “You cant get too high….and you can’t get too low/Cause if you get too high…then you’ll surely be low” I wonder if she’s a lesbot. Seems like it.

  27. Gucci May 27, 2010

    @likeCAESAR

Girl you are just a straight up hating ass fool

  28. Nika May 27, 2010

@Jim Jones – u have no taste AT ALL, so why in the hell would ANYBODY with any common sense read or even listen to your post…smh. Get a f****** life and fall back into your pre school class and leave the opinions to the adults with an ear for TALENT….b****-ass!

  29. GARY May 27, 2010

@ Healthy Black Queens Why you trying to make fun of Michelle Williams without knowing ANYTHING about her worldwild sales ??? Michelle sold 22.000 Copies of her album in Japan with NO promo , or NO ADD intended . We Break The Dawn was played WORLDWILD on radios And the song is still in the Rn’b iTunes chart in finland …. AND IT’S BEEN OVER 3 YEARS SINCE THE SONG WAS RELEASED !!!! Twirl your tongue in your mouth 10 times before talking S*** !!

  30. ADE May 27, 2010

Sorry I just can’t get into this girl, shes super annoying!

  31. Gucci May 27, 2010

@Gary lmao girl pahleeze nobody here gives a f*** about tacky ass bird headed michelle williams. Let’s just celebrate the fact that Janelle is doing well and I hope her sales increase so more people can get into her amazing sound.

  33. Tha’s How They Get You May 27, 2010

“Not as clean as her performance on The Late Show with David Letterman”… ? Really? Wow. I can’t see this video, but I did see the Letterman performance. She was flat for the beginning of the song and her voice was extremely tight . She failed to make it back to the microphone in time after doing her dance routine. She was noticeably awkward. So if this was “not as clean” as that one then that’s not a good sign. I have seen her perform live and she is quite a good vocalist. She has a lot of potential but she’s definitely going to have to get a hold of those nerves and work on her stage presence if she wants to win audiences with her television appearances.

  34. Gary May 27, 2010

Gucci i don’t care if you like her or not i’m just relating the freaking facts ! Your hatin A** must be proud of himself after this comment don’t you ? Who cares about ” Everybody loves her ” I love someone for his/her QUALITY not POPULARITY ! U just stupid as hell
