His sexuality is neither here nor there but as far as his talent is concerned Jason Derulo epitomises the current trend in the industry plaguing the bulk of today’s new signees…, basically he’s a talented songwriter and/or dancer but he’s not a talented artist in his own right. I understand labels wanting to keep all the talent in-house with their act not having to rely on outside writers to keep the machine rolling and also writing allows for the acts to make some money along the way too but the point is these acts are unfinished and unpolished and lack the required magic needed to deliver as front men. Some of the strongest and most relevant pre-noughties performers didn’t write their own material but they didn’t need to because teams of writer’s were handling that end and the artist’s job was to look good, sing well and perform which the bulk did. Derulo in this day and age doesn’t need to be better than he is because this generation is starved for decent performers outside of Lady Gaga and Chris Brown (I don’t inc. Beyonce, Usher or JT in this as they honed their skills with all the other 90’s acts) so there’s a market for him as he is. But IMO he would have been cooler with a couple years artist development and vocal training under his belt because he’s not without talent, it’s just that his style is sufocated beneath all that unnecessary riffing and embellishment and his dancing is so hyperactive and chaotically beggin that you can’t enjoy it. In a word, he’s not ready and shouldn’t be out yet.
