New Song: Kelly Rowland – ‘Commander (Urban Mix)’

Published: Sunday 9th May 2010 by Sam

Kelly Rowland‘s new single ‘Commander’ has received an almost unanimously positive reception since debuting two weeks ago; with only a select few lamenting over its ‘dance’ sound. It now appears Rowland and her team are set to cover all ground, in the form of an ‘Urban Mix’ of the song. Hitmaker Rico Love (who penned the song), played the slowed down, R&B incarnation of ‘Commander’ on Twitter moments ago. Check it out below…

I think the single is dope overall! She deserves this success. It’s been her strongest “hit” since “Stole”. Bring it on, Kelly! ♥

  2. NikkiIsChillin May 9, 2010

Thats hot. I’m feeling the R&B vibe. I also liked the Thinking Bout You remix that she did with Mario. Go Team Kelly!!!

  3. magdalena May 9, 2010

Kelly’s ON FIRE! LOVE the single, i think she will be so successful with this CD. Teaming up with Guetta was the best decision of her life.

  7. May 9, 2010

no one wants to see that fat face

    dance version is way better

    the oomph is missing here

  8. Shabz May 9, 2010

I reckon Drake should be on this track, and ain’t it funny how Kelly haters (its done to beyonce as well) always find themselves watching her videos, if she sucks so bad why are you watching? Personally more of fan of her doing RnB Love again, and Work are my favorites, but she is actually making me listen to dance music so she must be doing something right.

  9. Zoli May 9, 2010

Sounds good! Though I prefer the dance version it’s still really good.

  10. DAvid May 9, 2010

    HOT HOT HOT!!!!!!!!

  11. Oggie May 9, 2010

    Both Versions are FIRE!!!

  12. Veebz May 9, 2010

YES…. I Love It!…. She should have a rapper featured on it …. Nicki + Drake’s flow would fit nicely

  13. roneyyvee May 9, 2010

this would be better if they would re-record her vocals…

  14. Lyric “Commander” Lee May 9, 2010

my chick bad – i think theyre on to something – gotta hear a hq version with an offical rapper to make final judgement but its sounding perfect for the us market

  16. HeYa May 9, 2010

  17. Bam Bam May 9, 2010

I like it better than the original cuz if that dance foolisheness is what kelly is serving this time i wont be buying the album.

  18. AJ May 9, 2010

BAM BAM you probably were not gonna support anyway so suck a fat one..

  19. Lyric “Commander” Lee May 9, 2010

exactly – all the ppl who complian about her direction acts like this is all she does – she has a rnb album and a pop rock influence album plus all features so there is a widdde range of music under her belt – “ppl want the only kells buy her old album” thanks jay lol
stay complaining – i love the dance directiong – it crosses all borders and provides no limits to what audience it will reach – she scream international solo star and that is who she is catering too – the us (urban audience) which seems to be the only ones complaining will either get on board or go back to soulja boy and them who they seem to die for – ms kelly is is her own loane and is make tidal waves – HOLD ON BEFORE U GET SWEPT AWAY!!

  20. Ghetto Fab May 9, 2010

Wow! This could really work. This could be playing on all those Urban radios (not that I think she should care but w/e) while Commander (Dance Mix) could be playing on the Pop stations. Rico told yall he wasn’t gonna f*** around with Kelly’s s***. Its gonna be straight fire this time! Very excited about this record.

  21. peace May 9, 2010

NICEEEEEE! Kelly isn’t playing around! By the way. The IP address says that LOLA and … are the same ppl. Go figure. GTFOH you lame ass.

  22. “Dj Y2k Malone” May 9, 2010

  30. Yellow Gorillah May 9, 2010

Yeeeeeeees i prefer this version over the original!

  31. DANE May 9, 2010

I think the house mix will be a hit in Canada where I am, and in Europe. This urban mix is great and will have 106 & Park success. It’s up tothe American fans toi financially support her project!

  32. STAY MAD! May 9, 2010

    #FAIL

  33. TJ May 9, 2010

I love the beat and the vibe of the song!!!
But it doesn’t fit the lyrics of the song at all!
I think they should use the same melody and switch up a few of the lyrics to make this feel completely like a slow jam!
    Like change…
    “and I command you to……DANCE”
    …to…
    “and I Command you to……strip” 😉

  34. Gucci May 9, 2010

That’s a hot mix! Way better than that garbage David Guetta was trying to put out

    Work it Kelly honey.

  35. keith May 9, 2010

Sorry dont like this remix. Turns it into just another samey Urban track, of which there are plenty to choose from at the moment. Will be good for the US market, as the Americans like all their stuff to sound the same.

Stick with the original dance concept Kelly, and go for something more original.

  36. Anne May 9, 2010

I like the groove/music but I just don’t like these lyrics, especially the whole ‘Commander’ thing (kinda corny to me). I don’t know about her prospects but it’s nice that Kelly has a lot of fans on this website who manage to remain optimistic & supportive.

  37. Toya May 9, 2010

    Lurvss this GO Kellzzz

  38. Aysha May 9, 2010

I just heard ” UNITY ” by Kelly Rowland on the radio … love this song !!! Is there a video for this track yet ? Commander is hot as well ~ can’t wait for the new album 😉

  39. loso May 9, 2010

I love this mix it is so Hott yesssssss Kelly I will be supporting you all the way. Trust the urban market will eat that up with a hot rapper on it. For the people saying the song is about dancing ……………..ummmm have you ever heard of slow winding dancing only the urban lovers like myself would know about that so song lyrics fit perfectly for slow urban dancing. I love both versions I play Commander everyday at least 20 times.

  40. tera May 9, 2010

    lola u r the biggest b**** f*** u

  41. dakkylove May 10, 2010

i prefer the original, but still love all the versions of this song…Kelly has a hit on her hands i pray her team uses it well.

  42. Corey May 10, 2010

Yessss! Put Luda and Drake on that and re-record those vocals to make them more sultry and that would be a HIT! I Love Kelly, Rico ain’t playin.

  43. LPK May 10, 2010

    OH MY GOSH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! F***** HOT
LUDA MUST HERE ALONG WITH NICKI MINAJ!!!!!

  44. Lebo(CaribbeanBoi) May 10, 2010

I like how they slowed it down …. I can c ma girl giving me a lap dance to this shyt !!!

  46. lamb May 10, 2010

    urban means n***** right???

  47. justin_Sofly May 10, 2010

OMG…..THAT WAS HOT, I THINK THEY SHOULD RE DO THE VOCALS MORE S*** AND SEDUCTIVE TYPE SINGING AND PUT EITHER NICKI MINAJ OR LUDA OR T.I AND THIS WOULD BE A BANGER FOR REAL THAT BEAT WAS AMAZING I WONDER WHO DID THAT I COULD BE A WHOLE DIFFERENT SONG…GO KELLY

  48. e11 May 10, 2010

i like it, but wished she re recorded for a more sultry vocal

i do like though. i think imma need a Luda rap on this.

  49. e11 May 10, 2010

    NO TO NICKI MINAJ

  50. Lyric “Commander” Lee May 10, 2010

OMG IM DYING HERE – PEEP WHAT THE CRITICS ARE SAYING

The song was well received by critics who noted Rowland and Guetta as a winning formula. Robert Copsey of Digital Spy said “…It looks as though they’re going to be ruling the airwaves all over again. … After she lulls us into a false sense of security (“I feel like the DJ is bodyguard / You see the way he keeps me safe? / With the treble and the bass?”), the track plunges into a pounding electro-house chorus that quite literally orders us to the dance floor … The result isn’t quite as fresh and inventive as some of Guetta’s recent output – Kelis’s ‘Acapella’, for example – but it goes a long way towards recapturing some of last summer’s magic…”[6] Ivan Ibarra of DjBooth.net also agreed saying “The David Guetta-produced jam will definitely have dancers fist-pumping in their favorite Jersey Shore re-enactment. Vocally Kelly delivers a performance that marries Guetta’s production perfectly…”[7] Robert Daw of Idolator said “if you think Ms. Kelly is taking the go-go boots off anytime soon, then you’d best go lean against the wall, flower. Rowland’s Guetta-produced new single ‘Commander’ is pure strobe-light adrenaline rush. … [it] will appear on Kelly’s as-yet-untitled third solo album … we’re predicting a full on Rowland Renaissance!”.[8]

OMG PPL WE HAVE COINED A NEW PHRASE – THE ROWLAND renaissance

  51. RudeBoii May 10, 2010

    This is horrible !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If they gonna do a urban version which they dont need to do, she need to re-record the vocal, further more the lyrics just doesnt fit with beat. The mix is hot but the vocals and lyrics not matching.

LOVE the dance version !!!!! played it at my party saturday, everybody loved it !!!!

    Go team Kelly !
    A for Effort&creativity tho

  52. Meechy05 May 10, 2010

Loves loves loves it cant wait to they do the revocals on this

  53. Andrew May 10, 2010

    Love it 😀

  54. DB May 13, 2010

    NIIIIIIICE !

  55. JonathanLGardner May 14, 2010

YESS!! THIS IS B A N G I N G ! This will blow up on US R&B – and so will cater to her old fans while the original mix by David Guetta will provide for all the new ones she required with the incredible “When Love Takes Over”.
I LOVE and prefer the original mix but this is GREAT tooo! They need to release BOTH versions – so Kelly can dominate Pop AND R&B markets at the same time (as miss err…dare I say Beyonce did with her I Am…singles)

  56. Nikki May 14, 2010

I will reserve my comment re liking or disliking the song cuz 1. I need to heard a better quality cuz it sounds the same to me 2. The lyrics is dance so doing RnB is kinda off 3. The arrangement of the song can be done way differently of suite the genre. etc.
