Toni Braxton’s New Album Has No ‘Pulse’

Published: Wednesday 5th May 2010 by Trent

It looks like Toni Braxton’s new album is set to be dead on arrival. The diva’s ‘Pulse’ LP, which hit stores this week, is projected to amass a total of 45-50k units in 1st weeks sales. The news comes via the chart analysts at Hits Daily Double who estimate the figures based on the record’s slow 1st day.

It never ceases to amaze how immensely many talented artists like Braxton, even with solid material, continue to be shut out in favour of their far lass gifted counterparts. With brilliant records such as ‘Make My Heart’ and ‘Hands Tied’ on the album, ‘Pulse’ definitely stands as one of the strongest R&B records of the year. However, having only just started on the promotional trail for the project last week, Braxton still has the opportunity to turn the situation around. Don’t give up!

Definitely one of the best R&B records so far this year behind Monica’s! I think she will eventually hit Gold (at least) overtime. She has a hard core fan base that will always support her. That’s what happens when one has been in the game for almost 20 years and has consistently given good music (I think: all of her albums are good in their own way IMO). But we will see. I do attribute this to the slack promotional efforts of Atlantic Records. You can definitely tell that she’s not a priority there!

  2. algie May 5, 2010

the best lesson you can learn as a music lover is sells will never determine how good a cd is because toni’s cd is great no matter what it sales its first week or a year from now

  3. Ken dole May 5, 2010

She should have joined the Fantasia/ Keyshia Cole/ Monica / Brandy bandwagon & did a reality show !!! that woulda helped the sales……. NOW MS.Kelly Rowland’s team needs to look at this and evaluate her album thats gonna drop

  4. Jeff May 5, 2010

I have it, got it for my mom and its a GREAT CD!!…sad, about the sales though

  5. jonstrax May 5, 2010

THE SALES ARE LOW BECAUSE NO1 BUYS ALBUMS LIKE THAT PEOPLE ONLY BUY SINGLES SO UNLESS YOUR A MAJOR SUPERSTAR LIKE BEYONCE, ALICA KEYS ECT THEN UR ALBUM AINT GONNA SELL. BEST THING IS TO MAKE A LAME REALITY SHOW LIKE THE REST OF THE STRUGGLING ARTISTS TO GAIN INTEREST.

I think Brandy is right Monica is the Ideal for artist like her, she needs to use the mediums available to her, Monica had her reality show and her twitter, and was interacting with her fans the whole time, so basically she had a huge web/street team on top of her show

  7. Darris May 5, 2010

You ever stop to think maybe you just have s*** taste in not so commercial RnB music? Toni’s album is not that good and Make My Heart Go is flat out S***!

  8. C May 5, 2010

a artist should never rely on a label alone you have to grind now days even after paying your dues

  9. exposed May 5, 2010

MEHHH, I COULDNT GIVE A CRAP. GUESS IM NOT ONE O THE BUYERS OF THIS ALBUM. DOESNT REALLY STAND OUT TO ME. OH AND BESIDES… THERE’S LIMEWIRE!! HAHA.

  10. Howw May 5, 2010

Honestly her album isn’t good at all. Monica’s album wasnt even that good! These singers lack stage presence and contrary to what most people say, their voices aren’t that good. I see why these garbage albums aren’t selling. Monica and Toni need to retire

Trent, as a blogger on a music website I would assume one would be informed about the current state of the recording industry as a whole. B.o.B. a relatively new artist to mainstream people sold 80K to 90K in its first week and was able to garner #1. And he has multiple singles currently charting in the top 10, as well as a #1 hit record.

You and your readers are insanely ignorant to call everything a ‘flop’ if it doesn’t amass 100K+. The music industry is susceptible to piracy — one of the biggest killers of sales, a recession with high unemployment rates, and iTunes and other digital media platforms make it easy for an artist to sell SINGLES versus a whole album.

Let alone if you look at tv networks like MTV, BET, and VH1 where at a time, were THEY channels to turn to in order to view not only music videos but shows which supported the artist (there is no more TRL — at least to the magnitude that it was when Carson Daly hosted, no more MTV Diary, Making the Music Video, BET’s All Access Pass & How I’m Living, VH1’s Behind the Music — which I know is finally about ot be in syndication once more, VH1’s am wake up (I used to watch the videos before I went to class!) for promotional efforts to be put forth. Instead, we are exposed to reality tv which refocuses the emphasis from the music to the gossip fodder that generates hits for some blogs. We don’t even have high profile commercials so much anymore… like the Coca Cola ads or Pepsi ads that used to feature artists.

With all of that in mind, it does not take a degree in marketing to understand why artists cannot sell their s*** anymore! Especially since fans of music in this generation seem to be generally easily impressionable. If it does not sell a milli in one week, you have these fans running to call things ‘flops’ and saying that their ‘swagger’ is gone and other pointless, insipid fodder that they babble while fanatically asserting their artist of choice’s dominance. It is RI.DI.CU.LOUS. And posts like this only help to perpetuate that.

It is this reason that what some may deem ‘good’ music is cast aside in order to move with the times and attempt to garner that number 1 single in order to make fans believe they are worthwhile. It is the same reason why some people’s favorite artists have departed from their R&B roots and continue to make less than stellar music. However, because fans buy into their ‘swagger’, it is excusable. Or if not excusable, they wonder why they cannot return to making the music they once loved. You guys do not support real things and are consumed in image. Lady Gaga’s quick success is all but a sign of the times, unfortunately. Although I will say, despite this fact, at least she has some musical talent to back it up to some degree.

LOL.. didn’t mean to get that winded.. *drops mic and walks off stage*

Her album was really good. I loved alot of the songs. I feel like its really not her but the people who listen to the music. There are not alot of people who listen to croners like Toni, Brandy, Monica. I feel like they are the women in between. Beyonce broke away from Destiny’s Child but I feel like even if they made a new album it wouldn’t soar without Beyonce.

I love Toni Braxton. People are so much in love with the techno and all those fake altered voices. Its sad. I love you Toni and wish you the best.

  18. Little Mariah May 5, 2010

it’s an absolute amazing album. it better not be underrated. ima be pissed if it is. i’ve been doing crazy promo for it haha. everyone i know that bought it says that love love love it. hopefully they’ll all spread the word. the music field is so hard these days. music is NOT what it used to be. they’re not even playing music on the radio anymore, ex. KESHA !

  19. Waddie G. May 5, 2010

All you guys got it wrong. Toni is not doing well these days anymore is because she’s been BLACKBALLED. Every since her public falling out with L.A. Reid and LaFace Records over her 1998 bankruptcy, lack of singles promotion on The Heat in 2000, forcing her to promote More Than A Woman album in 2002 despite our troubled pregnancy – as well as feuding with former manager/record label head Barry Hankerson over the promotion of Libra album and feuding with Jay-Z and Beyonce (as well as producer Kanye West) over the sampling of 2Pac’s “Me & My Girlfriend” back in 2002 for their singles – has made her a black sheep in the industry…

Don’t get me wrong Toni Braxton is my favorite female artist (alongside Mary J. Blige and Janet Jackson), but fighting against some of the biggest powers within the industry in self-sabotaging and almost career-ending…it affecting her ability to get radio hits, etc…even Atlantic Records is not doing a great job promoting the release of her album.

  20. SASHA May 5, 2010

Hey That Grape Juice I know this is long. Yes I work so no comment on how I don’t have anything to do. Did it in my spare time. Sam, Trent and the rest of you should stop talking about how Rihanna is not selling. She is doing quite fine; many artists would love to have her sales. I am not a stan. Others who say Alicia’s album flopped think again it is hard selling music today. While she sold the same amount in her first month with her last album she is still pass the 2.5 million mark so shut up. I am a fan of Gaga but you may think different after reading my article but I am a fan. Please read the entire article I think you will find it interesting. If you guys find it interesting tell me if you don’t tell me. I really appreciate it. If the majority is no I will not do a follow up and bore u guys.

I think 2010 has been average years so in music, just look at the top selling albums so far. With 4 months gone it is a country album again (in 2009 it was Taylor Swift) that is at the top while several top 2009 albums are still on the list. Lady Antebellum is ahead of Sade who is the nearest competitor by 798,000 albums and the country group is still selling 50,000 albums weekly. Hence it will be hard for anyone to pass them. In my opinion no one will. Country music sells big in America and with Taylor Swift about to put out album #3 in October you know she will sell well. Justin Beiber is also selling well and will pass Sade by June based on sales predictions. While he is 231,000 albums behind Sade he is selling 30,000 albums more than her a week and will eventually pass her. His other album is also selling well.

I am amazed that so many R&B and hip hop albums that were released in the last few months (Robin Thicke, Melanie Fiona, Amerie etc) and have not sold well. The list below is about the U,S. with the latter about the worldwide charts. However in the United Kingdom it is Lady Gaga that has the best selling album of 2010 with over 560,000 albums sold so far. No hating but what is so special about Gaga? I know she can sing and dance but so do a lot of people. Anyways she is also doing well in the U.S. Only Sade, Usher and Lil Wayne made the top ten as urban artists. However Lil Wayne will drop from the list because several other albums (pop, country and alternative) are close and are selling better than his. Therefore I made another list to show our urban artists. There are other artists such as Nickelback, Carrie Underwood, Adam Lambert and others who are outselling our artists each week but I did not include them.

Based on the list below I can draw the following conclusions: Beyoncé should reach 3 million by year end. Rihanna will reach 1 mil by June, Why is Jason Derulo selling so poorly? B.O.B had a big hit but only sold 84,000 albums in his debut, he should have at least sold 100,000 his album is good. Toni Braxton is going to debut with only 45,000. Why? Anyways it is a list of the top selling albums of 2010 so far from January 10, 2010 (the beginning of the Neilson Soundscan year) to May 2, 2010. The total number of albums sold in the U.S. since its release is written in bracket.

    WORLDWIDE CHARTS
April has come and gone and after 4 months Gaga is killing the Worldwide Charts. She is leading Justin Beiber who is at number 2 by 888,000 albums plus she is consistently selling 100,000 albums a week. The fact that she is not finish releasing singles (Alejandro) and on tour means she will continue to sell. Gaga’s album is 1.013 million away from the 10 million mark. I did not count her eight songs EP which is seen as her second album which has sold over 1 million. Most people add the EP in her sales and say she has sold 10 million but call it whatever. No one is going to catch her unless another Susan Boyle appears. The only competition she has now is Justin Beiber. I am telling you. No hating but again what is so special about Gaga? Isn’t she a regular pop star? Talking about Justin Beiber, he is also quickly approaching the top spot since the sales of his albums are counted as 1. This is impressive; before the second part of his debut was released (5 weeks ago) he had sold 546,000 albums since 2010. However since the second part of the album was released it has sold a combined 1.284 million in 5 weeks to total 2.005 million for the year. Talk about a young superstar. Looking at the list of artists that are going to drop albums this year only Christina Aguilera looks like a main threat since she is a worldwide seller, the others will mostly impact the U.S chart not the global charts. Below are the totals for 2010 and an analysis with their grand total in bracket.

TOP 10 SELLING ALBUMS IN THE WORLD AS OF APRIL 30, 2010
    1. Lady Gaga “The Fame Monster” – 2,893,000 albums
(200,000 sold in 2008 + 5,894,000 sold in 2009 gives a grand total of 8,987,000, expect it to reach 10 million by June. It is notable that the separate The Fame Monster EP is not included in this figure, the US accounted for 36% of the total sales and 21% in the UK)

    2. Justin Beiber “My World +My World 2.0” (it is a 2 part debut album so they count as 1 – 2,005,000 albums
(798,000 was sold in 2009 to give a total of 2,803,000)

    3. Lady Antebellum “Need You Now” – 1,974,000 albums
(Grand total of 1,974,000 as it was released in 2010, the group is only known in the US though as it accounts for 95% of its sales).

    6. Susan Boyle “I Dreamed A Dream” – 1,723,000 albums
(Add this to 6,014,000 sold in 2009 for a total of 7,711,000. Susan sold 48% of her albums in the US and nearly 25% in the UK).

    7. Alicia Keys “The Element of Freedom – 1,498,000 albums
(Sales after a December 2009 release were 1,030,000 for grand total of 2,528,000 for the piano lady; nearly 50% and 20% of the total was sold in the U.S and UK respectively

    8. Michael Bublé “Crazy Love” – 1,183,000 albums
(Unknown in the urban audience but has sold 3,300,000 in 2009 for a grand total of 4,483,000 with only 1 single. Talk about a mega star. The US and UK both account for over 30% each of the album sales).

    9. Ke$ha “Animal” – 1,049,000 albums
(Its grand total is the same 1,049,000 as it was released in 2010. 60% of the album was sold in the U.S)

    10. Rihanna “Rated R” – 957,000 albums

(The icon sold 3,100,000 albums in 2009 after only 2 months of availability, its grand total now stand sat 3,949,000; expect it to reach 4 million by the first week in June).

Not sure what number is Beyoncé but she sold 535,000 albums in2010
(2,300,000 albums were sold in 2008 and 3,200,000 in 2009 for a total of 6,035,000 albums).

I just do NOT get it, TONI IS AMAZING (black people just are lame mannn)….Monica had 2 get a reality show to sell, it’s sadd….

  22. noah May 5, 2010

i wish the very best for toni!:)) and this album deserves to be number one!!
its an AWESOME album!! and i really enjoy this album!:))
    i totally loved it!<3

  23. Len May 5, 2010

F*** everyone who is bashing Toni’s album and sayin her and Monica need to retire know them f****** people who support them non singing artist out there who is creating b******* on the radio and the record companies who destroyed RnB go at them don’t come for my girls they make classic s*** not that gimmick catchy s*** that is only good for the grown up crack baby era that doesn’t know good music…Now hate that….I got all her albums and Monica’s and they still s*** on them other b****** voices….

  24. Pucci May 5, 2010

    @algie

I agree with you 100%. Ppl think that just because an album sales, that means its a good album. Many things go into to releasing an album, the CORRECT promotion besides the CORRECT music is the MAJOR key. There have been many of good albums made in the past 5 years that did not get the same recognition, in likes of stars that were outselling them.

    @Howw
You know the funny thing is that, Monica’s music & album is actually doing very well. Her album was HELLA good contrary to your opinion & she had the right marketing techniques & a great team behind her. So Monica isn’t going anywhere. Her album was praised greatly, & it sold very well for an artist of her stature who took a long break to take care of her 2 sons. So I HIGHLY disagree with your opinion.

I think Toni’s problem is that the album wasn’t promoted AT ALL. I mean besides the internet, public appearances here & there, where did you ever see Toni Braxton promoting her album in a major way?? Plus, i don’t think her fanbase was really behind her this go round. That’s something that Monica did have, her fanbase was behind her & they cheered her on every step of the way right up until the album was released & ppl are still going hard for her album. I think if things had been different for her, she would’ve had a lot more success IMO.

  25. willy May 5, 2010

I’m mad @ her label. ’cause they didn’t send any of her songs to big radio market. all they did is with Urban AC which is the smallest market. They should have sent HANDS TIED to Urban as well. Once it’s a huge hit there, the album sales would go up much higher. maybe Hands Tied could crossover to Rhy.

also, they need to send MAKE MY HEART to Rhy. & Pop radio. not Urban AC. that’s not the type of songs would get played on the format.

I love toni so much. her voice is one of the kind. the album is by far one of the best R&B album of the year

  26. Ben May 5, 2010

IT IS ONLY DAY 2 OF RELEASE, ARE YOU FREAKKIN’ KIDDING ME? “HITS DAILY DOUBLE?” NEVER HEARD OF THEM, THEY AREN’T BILLBOARD. CAN SHE AT LEAST GET A WEEK IN FIRST BEFORE YOU START LAYING INTO HER ALREADY?

  27. toni baby May 5, 2010

Her album failed due to all the internet leaks months ahead of the release date

  28. JayCred May 5, 2010

I wasn’t really feeling the album, a lot of the songs just meshed in sound and it was sorta boring.

Her voice didn’t really have any range on this album either, it was a lot of the same along with the breath-y vocals. Lookin’ at Me is her last chance to save the album honestly.

  29. Anne May 5, 2010

I agree w/those that are not that impressed w/Toni’s vocals and recent material. I’m not sure if it was her voice in the past that made her so successful or moreso the great songs that were produced in the past like: “Another Sad Love Song”; “Breathe Again”; “Un-Break My Heart”; “He Wasn’t Man Enough”; “Love Shoulda Brought You Home”; “7 Whole Days”; “Your Making Me High”; “You Mean The World To Me”; etc. Almost anyone could have made a hit out of the above songs. Her latest releases pale in comparison to her earlier material so maybe that’s why her lack of vocal range & breathy vocals stands out more now. There are some R&B artists that should be selling more records but I don’t really feel that way about Toni so far with what I’ve heard of this latest effort.

  30. ARTISTK May 5, 2010

TONI IS UNIQUE, TALENTED, AND SHE WILL PREVAIL!

  31. MrIncredible May 5, 2010

Ok first of all, Monica’s album is AMAZING and she’s doing well because of a combination of good material and the RIGHT image. Sure her show helped her become relevant again, but a show will not count for crap if you are not likeable.

Second, for those who continue to say that Rihanna has done well in sales in the U.S… are you ignorant to the fact that this girl has a ENORMOUS audience? It is unexplainable that Monica has managed to outsell her given that she is only marketed to the urban audience and her last album flopped. POINT BLANK!

Finally, while I love old Toni, new Toni’s image is a FAIL. Furthermore, her material is good but mediocre. Monica on the other hand had an UNDENIABLE hit first single on her hands with Everything To Me. What’s crazy is that she has at least two more #1 hits in store between Love All Over Me and Here I Am. Toni’s material is good, but its not NEARLY as strong.

  32. Dontazz May 5, 2010

WOW..WELL FIRST OF ALL I LOVE MONICA AND TONI..NO Hate PERIOD……NOW I DO THINK TONIS PROMOTION HAS JUST BEEN OK FOR THIS ALBUM..U HAVE TO START PROMOTION AT LEAST TWO WEEKS AHEAD OF THE RELEASE..MONICA DID HAVE HER SHOW..BUT SHE HAD TWITTER , A STREET TEAM AND DIE HARD FANS READY TO HEar her NEW MATERIAL COMPLETED. R AND B MUSIC IS NOT AS DOMINATE AS IT WAS IN THE 80S AND 90S ..U NOW HAVE TO INFUSE HIP HOP AND SOME POP TO BE SUCESSFUL..I HATE THAT FACT BUT UNLESS U ARE SADE OR MAXWELL…IT HAS TO HAPPEN THAT WAY! WHITNEY EVEN HAD DANJA, AKON, AND ALICIA KEYS AND SWIZZ BEATS PRODUCE FOR HER LATEST EFFORT…. I LIKE PULSE DONT LOVE IT BUT IT HAS POTENTIAL! I JUST DONT KNOW HOW TONIS UNBREAK MY HEART FANS ARE GOING TO MESH WITH THIS NEWER TONI-BY THE WAY SHE LOOOKS AMAZING OMG!!..P.S TO PUCCI,SASHA, WADDIE G..AND MR. When singing, Toni can deliver real emotion. Yes, her vocals are somewhat breathy, but her sound is commercial in the way that Diana Ross’ was. I agree with Mr Incredible, she struggles for the most part with mediocre material. ” Yesterday” is a great song, but the production overwhelms her voice, especially on the Trey Songz remix which could have been stellar. Other than that , there’s not much on the album that really stands out as a killer track.

At the age of 42 and with so many personal and business troubles, Toni’s hasn’t been consistently around for her audience. She says she wants to tour, so now she has to put it together and get out there and connect.

Gaga has fresh ideas, great songs, and she adapts very well to producers as different as Darkchild to CherryTree. Somehow she is able to make it all Gaga. That’s why she’s on top.

    OMG

    This double stnadard is disgusting.

If Mariah or Xtina sold 45-50 k on the first week, this blog would be full of with Mariah or CHristina is DEAD and GONE and FLOP. ANd the should have a 2 years break, etc.

Now TOni Braxton (who I also love) sold a totally disaster amount of albums, you say no such things, but “Don’t give up!!!”

    Disgusting this blog is………

For the person who said no one is checking for Monica, 185k in one week says otherwise and her album is AMAZING!!! But this is not about Monica..

I bought Toni’s album on itunes and I like a few songs, “Wardrobe” “Pulse” “Why won’t you love me” but everything else is just okay. Besides the lack of good material on her album, Toni really needs drop the “s***” image considering she’s in her 40s now. Like stop trying to dress how you dressed when you were in your late twenties, it hasn’t worked for Mariah and it won’t work for you. So she needs to fix her image and come proper and in addition to that sing more ballads because Toni is known for powerful ballads. I’m sure she’ll dust herself off and try again, Toni is a fighter. Good luck to her

OMG…This is one of the most disturbing, hateful, unacceptable audience I have EVER came across. How disrespectful can some of you be? Her album IS amazing. Her vocals are better than 75% of the newer artists, and older (i.e. mariah, whitney, SADE, etc.). It disgusts me that people can shout out aimlessly about how someone’s getting lack of promotion and a certain artists fan base is not backing them up. This album is RAW and deserves 300,000k PLUS sales in its first week. It is a given 3x platinum record. The fan base that you all are attacking, are yourselves. How pathetic. She has been through so much and the best you all can say is “she needs to dress more appropriately” or “she gets a little breathy when she sings live”. SO WHAT? Every artist does who’s in that age category. Look at Whitney and Mariah. Both of their voices are COMPLETELY ruined, and yet they’ve managed to maintain a very decent amount of fans and sales. I can not believe these comments. I’m in awh, literally. I PRAY that this album exceeds everyone’s projections and expectations. You GO Toni. You need a fan base where fans will love and support you, NO matter what! P.S. You still have. And you’re better than ever. 🙂

I think Toni’s album is better than many popular younger artist out today. Rihanna’s mess of an album was still heavily promoted and worked until they found a hit. I think it’s way too early to predict 50k for her first week. Hitsdailydouble estimates were wrong with Lil wayne (and more even than this 1 occassion). I think Toni will pull in something closer to 100k. She’s making her rounds and performing alot lately. I think radio isn’t supporting older artist as much, but I believe “Hands Tied” will not be ignored. I think it blends in fine with today’s music as well as stick to Toni’s traditional sound. Toni has a great album, I think there are 7/8 singles (pop and r&b wise) that will serve well as singles. If Toni’s label really commits to this project Toni will be fine.

@BEN – You’ve never heard of HDD? You’ve clearly never read any music blog then. Do your research before thrusting a boring rant upon us.

I love Toni, lived for Libra and Yesterday is one of my favourite songs of 09 but the album isn’t up to much, aside from the singles and Woman. Very much generic, slightly dated midtempos with not much life to them. Of course her voice is great but you need the material too. Either Toni or her label just aren’t committed – everything on the album leaked ages ago. She said she’d be recording five new songs for it but that never happened. It’s a mess, and nobody could’ve expected anymore than 50k.

Keep pressing girl! Remember the phrase Never Say Never. Monica was told her entire album sales would be approximately 40,000 units yet see what she did on her first day release.
IMHO with all the media hype surrounding RiRi’s Rated R including all the ‘big’ interview about her domestics, I thought the first day sales would be 1000000000000000 hence Never Say Never. Luv ya Toni x x x

I just got wind of this CD, she promoted very well, I was into Whitney at the time of her releasing this CD, it was just bad timing. There are 5 really good songs on her CD tho. Toni has to tone it down when it comes to fighting with people. These people make her look bad. In actuality she is doing what she’s suppose to.
Another problem is this younger generation, they love this Hip Hop music, it’s on every other station. We have to bring R & B right back to the mainstream tho…
