I like Rihanna but she sounded a hawt mess. Let me speak the truth on the real. Rihanna’s songs be hot and her studio versions be hot but once she get that mic and sing live she loses credibility. Yes, you’re correct if you are a vocalist you are keen if someone’s on or off key or whether they can sing, however you don’t have to be a vocalist to know when someone is on or off key or if they can sing! DUH! It’s not that hard to recognize someone’s lack of vocal ability! I used to sing alot and train vocally when I was in Elementary and middle school but I stopped in high school because I don’t have a passion for it. I just did it because my mom wanted me to and because my friends told me I could sing. I hated when my friends would tell other people that I could sing, so they would put me on the spot and constantly tell me “Sing something right quick.” I despised that and still do!
Anyway you don’t have to be a vocalist to distinguish people’s tone. Like I said, you don’t have to know how to sing in order to have an unfamiliar tone. You can hear someone’s tone when they SPEAK so of course she will always have the same tone if she had vocal training. You CANNOT change a person’s tone! It’s apart of the natural voice rather they are singing or speaking. We can determine when Jay-Z is rapping just by listening to him because of his signature TONE. We know when Barack Obama is speaking because of his TONE. Just like if Rihanna was speaking we could tell it’s Rihanna because of her tone.
I already know who Sia is! And her tone DOES NOT sound like Rihanna’s. Rihanna has more of a distinct tone and Sia’s is a lot softer and versatile IMO.

Anyway I understand what you are trying to say about the word tone..but to me, the tone of your speaking voice is different than the tone of your singing voice. That’s what I was taught. The tone of your speaking voice may be higher and thinner than the tone of your singing voice, you see what I’m saying?
And sias tone is extraordinary, but is rather nasally and less distinct than rihannas but what I was referring to is the nasal trait that both Rihanna and sia share with their tone.

Some of what you are saying is correct. Rihanna has a voice but she is never consistent with it. Her studio vocals sound good and you can tell its something there. You know if a b**** has no voice at all ie Cassie and Ciara. You can hear it in the studio versions. The studio can polish your voice but it cannot give you power or range. So I’ll say Rihanna has a voice but in order to be considered a true vocalist she needs lessons so she won’t be dodging simple notes and cracking and going off key. She has no control over her voice. When she is in the studio she can do it as many times as she needs to get it right. When you are live you either hit the note right then or you miss it and sound a mess. Rihanna has some good performances but you gotta search hard for them. Whenever it is time for her to show up and show out she chokes and sounds a hot mess. That is why people say she cannot sing. She has not had that many good performances. That’s why i say she needs voice lessons. She needs to get some vocal lessons to learn to control her voice and be consistent in having good live performances.
Also I’ll admit some people just don’t like Rihanna’s voice at all whether it be studio or whatever. There are plenty of people out there that can sing and for whatever reason there will always be someone that just does not like the way they sing or their tone. But in Rihanna’s case its not just her tone that people don’t like. Its her lack of skill and consistency that people are talking about.
While this wasn’t her best performance, it also wasn’t her worse. I did’t think it was half as bad as Sam is making out.
But what I will say is this:
When I first started visiting this site, I used to ignore all the Rih stans comments about Sam & Trent always throwing shade at Rih, but it’s the truth. They give her little to no credit for anything, don’t post up any of her better performances and, yet, are more than happy to pay good money in a post recession world to see her live at the O2.
Trent also constantly talks about Queen B on his twitter – CONSTANTLY. Even more than some of us B stans, then he hates when he gets called out on it. I personally think he hates on any successful black female artist. Kelly better watch out; once she hits big, he’ll hate on her too.
And yes the tone of your speaking voice and the tone of your singing voice is two different things. You listen to Mariah Carey talk and then Mariah Carey sing its two different things. You listen to Leona Lewis talk and she has an annoying speaking voice IMO because of her British accent but then when she sings that disappears.
