That Grape Juice caught up with rising star Melanie Fiona during her recent trip to London town. The critically-acclaimed singer-songwriter, 27, spoke candidly with us about her musical journey so far, her annoyance at models topping the charts, her upcoming sophomore album, losing out to Beyonce at the Grammy’s, Chris Brown’s BET performance, and so much more. A great watch, I must say 🙂

I caught her performance at the Essence Music festival this year and she is very charismatic and has great stage performance. she sounds great live. She interacted great with the audience. There were some young girls with homemade tshirts with her name all over it.
She is definitely one to watch.

Her Cd is also very soulful. Good look and interview Thatgrapejuice…

  2. MelanHeads July 29, 2010

Love this interview with Melanie Fiona. She is so down to earth, real and talented!

  3. KEMP July 29, 2010

I really enjoyed this interview. Melanie Fiona is the future of music. I hate when people say she is underrated… she just came out.. her time is coming! Slowly, but surely. Expect to hear more from this woman.

  4. knicole July 29, 2010

oh yeah at the essence it was her bday the night she performed and a young guy from the audience sang happy bday to her. let me know if you want my picturs 😛

  5. bobs July 29, 2010

Poor Melanie! The THAT GRAPE JUICE CURSE has been imposed on her. If they like her, she’s sure to fail or become a crack w****.

  6. Secret Voice July 29, 2010

Love Melanie! The girl can SANG!

  7. Veebz July 29, 2010

Loved this Interview (was it my computer or was there a part where there was no sound) , Melanie’s really into producing Qualirty real music and I respect that. Also she put’s her heart and soul into her live shows she connects with her audience Sounds better in person than she does on CD! and shes a really nice when you meet her in person she apricates and shows love too the people that support her music .
Lol she knew who you were talking about with “Models that sing” lol I would be fustrated it if worked hard at my craft then someone comes along who hasn’t worked as hard and doesn’t have the talent gets more exposer than me. But I think with this next album that she going too get major exposer becuase more peope are used to seeing her face and know what shes about
    I can’t belive that shes 27!!! : O I though she was 23/24
    + she repping West Indies !!!! : )

  8. Soulful Roses July 29, 2010

    Loves my Melanie 😀

  9. piat July 29, 2010

Melanie has it all voice and beauty and I look forward to hearing her new album. Her voice is ridiculously good… so soulful and moving. One of my favorite songs by her is an unreleased song called Magic >> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aU9UlLYHEHs and here is a longer acapella version of Somebody Come Get Me >> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uu-1TicZ9L8

She is so underappreciated as an artist and I’m sorry but she should have been on the main stage at Essence instead of Keri Hilson (Keri is beautiful and thoughtful songwriter but on pure live performance merit…Melanie is that chick).

  10. mickjoe17 July 29, 2010

She came across really well! Amazing singer too

  11. BENJAMIN July 29, 2010

I REALLY REALLY wish they would refrain from asking the artists to sing on the spot. Do you know what it is like to have their grueling schedule, singing night after night, soggy vocals in the morning? They need to have a little more respect. But regardless, she was really humble and just went with the flow. I think she is going to great places.

  12. Gary July 29, 2010

I Realy like her , she truly can sang !

  13. ico July 29, 2010

    She is great!

  14. FreshUrbanEnt July 29, 2010

I love her, she punched that interview, & she wants to collab with Lupe, B.o.B., or Janelle Monae!

  16. Ankka July 29, 2010

again with CHRIS WOMAN BEATER BROWN AND HIS FAKE ASS TEARS……..

  17. EXPOSED July 29, 2010

THIS CANADIAN CHIC NEEDS OT GO HOME. CYA!

  18. smartee July 29, 2010

I really like her. Her personality is amazing! She’s so bright, loving, humble, and nice. I like the way she answered her questions, especially the ones about the “Models” being singers. Instead of calling them models, y’all should refer to them as VIDEO HOS, STRIPPERS, AND BURLEQUE DANCERS! It was no brainier that Beyonce would take home a Grammy in that category since her music is so damn pop/hip-hop. No way is her music now-a-days R&B or even Soul! Many singers only get famous, rich, and successful because of image, s**, poppy/catchy songs, and publicity. I’m glad Melanie is in this business for the love of music and not for all that other superficial bs.

  19. S*** July 29, 2010

Her song is really great. If she wasn’t nominated against the Queen Bey she would have won that grammy. 🙂

  20. Kross July 29, 2010

I thought it was wonderful…she has a great energy about her…I really enjoyed it…and she gave us two A cappellas Work!!! I really like this girl…I hope people see her as the great artist she is…= )

  21. jonberry July 29, 2010

Was not really a big fan but I do believe that she has a phenomenal voice. This interview is so real that it definitely makes me give her a second glance. I am so pleased that someone isn’t afraid to tell the truth about the “models” a.k.a those who lack true talent taking up space in the music industry. GOOD JOB Melanie!

Love her comments on Chris Brown; if it were just the two of us, I damn sure felt the love and energy in his performance and from the crowd that night! I totally agree with you on that one as well!

Lauren Hill, we all miss you girl come on back soon. Lil Kim the original! Whitney Huston will always be my girl! BUT WAIT Neyo? Oh well chick we just parted ways about that one. Give me CHRIS BROWN OR give me NOTHING AT ALL! DEUCES

  22. Ankka July 29, 2010

@BOBS: “Poor Melanie! The THAT GRAPE JUICE CURSE has been imposed on her. If they like her, she’s sure to fail or become a crack w****.”

    =====> O-M-G !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I CAN’T STOP LAUGHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just hope this is not true, because I really like her.
THAT FLOP JUICE should just stay away from her!!!!! LMFAO!!!!!

  23. ERROR ERROR C-ERROR July 29, 2010

I am tired of models such as Rihanna topping the charts..

I like Melonie Fiona. I LOVE LOVE Beyonce but I think Melonie Fiona should’ve won best R&B vocal no Beyonce. “Single Ladies” requires no real vocal technique and wasn’t a vocal masterpiece.

Sidenote: I am tired of Beyonce wasting that incredible voice of hers on dumb catchy pop tunes…Does anyone agree?

  24. S*** July 30, 2010

    @ ERROR ERROR C-ERROR

“I am tired of Beyonce wasting that incredible voice of hers on dumb catchy pop tunes”

Um, 1stly, Beyonce isnt Rihanna nor gaga, She has BALANCE. If you knew anything about her music you’d know she has a slew of deeper more meaningful songs with substance. Shes a mainstream act & thats what It takes, Versatility. Eventuallly she will stop going the commercial route altogether. Shes a rising Icon, not a Pop Star.

  25. gtprincess July 30, 2010

Kemp I agree with you. I don’t like when people say, that Melanie’s underated. Look at Mary J. Blige, Monica. They are Huge now, but when they came out, They were not as popular like Rihanna and Beyonce. But in time, They became just as famous and popular. Melanie’s career keeps Growing and Growing, and In time She will be as famous like a Mary J. Blige and Monica…

  26. noodles July 30, 2010

I love how people come to this website and call it that flop juice and stuff. The funny thing is this website is such a flop that you came to it and posted a comment right? I’m sure giving this website your views didn’t much prove your point. Smh. And she seems like a cool person. I defiently do like some of her songs. I agree that I’m tired of these non talented people getting so much attention. The music industry really is starting to mean nothing. Thats why its easy not to care who is topping the charts. Come on now people like Ke$ha top the charts with her dirty auto-tune using self so what does that tell you? I’d rather listen to an artist for their music not how much they can sell or the attention they get.

  27. boo hoo hoo July 30, 2010

and yet she had to use rihanna name in her interview, saying she wrote on rihanna’s album. IS rihanna’s album the only one she wrote on? why did she feel the need to mention Rihanna to Sam.. She knew what’s up. I can see she was taking digs at rihanna making lots of subliminal remarks.

  28. likeCAESAR July 30, 2010

Baby girl…your album was OK…thats it! Don’t get beside yourself. Sucks when pretty girls do ugly things. Why you doggin somebody to get your name out there? Don’t feed into it or you’ll end up like Shanice, Monifah, Sharrissa, Sharifa, Blu Cantrell, et cetera. They could all sing better than “the models”…but the models are still here and they are sol.

  29. JAZ0195 July 30, 2010

@BOO HOO HOO she is speaking the truth about the models

  30. noodles July 30, 2010

Ya’ll stay thinking someone is hating on Rihanna lol. Nothing negative came out that girls mouth about Rihanna ya’ll need a hobby lol. Maybe Rihanna’s album was the only one she worked on for all you know.

I love how there are only live 3 people who comment on this blog site..Lmfao and the same 3 people comment over and over..lol
    ———————————————————
You realized though you are apart of those “only 3 people” now right. Smh. If you are gonna throw shade at a blogsite for how many views or comments they have the best thing you can do is just go sitdown and not say anything at all because you clearly just showed the blog got your attention.

  31. JAZ0195 July 30, 2010

@NOODLES THANK YOU!!! I thougt I was only one who didn’t hear her say anyhing negative about rihanna.

For the people who said she did yall must think that about rihanna

  32. CH3RRY July 30, 2010

    i love her

  33. rob July 30, 2010

Great interview , great attitude and for once an acappella!!!! If you look down your list of interviews you can weed out the real lovers of their gift and the imposter’s *cough *Trey Songs

  34. The truth teller July 30, 2010

Beyonce is a s*** that flashes her v-jj and gets a grammy for it. she might as well just forget about that oscar because at the oscars its about real talent. u can not sleep around with the judges and get an oscar. NO! this is not the grammies, it dosnt work like that, you have to earn in first and then win it. not with bribes.

  35. KD July 30, 2010

@ truth teller…If B is a s*** what is GaGa, I have seen GaGa’s V-area more times in one video than in B’s entire career.

    P.S.

B**** take a chill pill and get with the program (B is not going anywhere, anytime soon) seriously, you’ll give yourself a stroke.

  36. trucie July 30, 2010

She has a great voice, and her first single was an amazing track. I downloaded her album and it was garbage. It doesn’t matter how you sound if the music you’re singing is crap. So as far as models being on top, maybe she sould get their numbers, call them up and ask for who’s writing their songs, and then maybe i’ll give her a second listen. Rihanna, case in point, has dropped four albums. May not be the best singer but her s*** is consistent and I love all of her albums. She’s still on heavy replay. So are Jennifer Lopez (not a great singer by general standards but I love her regardless and her music is great, Beyonce, Jennifer Hudson, Ne-yo, who is also not a strong singer but can write his ass off, and Trey Songs. Now ppl need to really wrap their heads around that. I love music and weather or not you’re Whitney Houston, if the songs on the album is s***, your album won’t sell. So Mel Fiona, needs to drop another album quick before I completely write her off. LOL.

  37. trueloverofmusic July 30, 2010

i love melanie fiona!!! thank you for making music for true lovers of music. the bridge was an amazing cd and i cant wait for the next one. i love what she said about lauyn hill. lauryn hill is the epitome of what a real artist is. also i liked that she mentioned monica and brandy especially monica. i have a deep love for music and im just so glad that melanie fiona is around to create good music for me to listen to. most of the stuff i listen to is from the 90’s because the majority of music today is garbage. im only 21 but i guess i have an old soul. i wish melanie much success.

  38. trueloverofmusic July 30, 2010

oh and one more thing….i love it when im at work and monday morning starts playing! i love that song!

  39. TheBaddestBitch July 30, 2010

    @Trueloverofmusic:

    Co-sign and i love you

  40. thekiddz July 30, 2010

Can someone please explain what “Real Music” is? I feel like it’s being taken out of context. Music is Music, what’s real for some, might not be for others. And it’s funny that you guys mention Lauryn Hill, because for all her musical brilliance, she doesn’t seem to grasp the concept of “Practice What You Preach”…

  41. DION-ISH July 30, 2010

    @ THEKIDDZ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

IDK why Some ppl say Real music is this or that becuase for me Classic, Incredible Real Music is music i grew up on and love like Bob Dylan, Radiohead, Queen, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, John Lennon, Sting, Oasis, Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, Michael Jackson ….And even Madonna. but for some it may be totally different….Like I Really could care less what Same or Trent Say realistically its just entertainment to even read LOL i dont consider then anybody who knows anything about the real ART of music and those type of musicians. It seems like Gaga is there Bowie! LOL

    ————

Oh yea and i don’t know much about Melanie Fiona, execpt ive seen her sing a Bob Marley song once and tho she has a great voice, it just didnt work for me…Its not that kind of song to do what she was doing w/ it but i hear shes ok, like a black Amy Winehouse or something…….BUT if from some comments im reading, if she Dissed Rihanna, then I DONT LIKE HER. Thats a No-No for me, Total Turn-Off and i will speak no-more of her and go pass a post on her …Thats just NOT the business.

  42. i wish i would July 30, 2010

She sure loves to talk. Damn! She has the same R&B voice as soooooooooo many
other r&b artist. She seems nice, howwever, there r certain questions that should not be answered in front of a micro-phone. especially subliminal ones. The “models topping the charts” NEVER say anything bad about other ARTIST. just do you. Pretty girl though. good luck to her.

  43. S*** July 30, 2010

    @ The truth teller

B**** STFU. Beyonce has MORE Talent in her FINGER nail alone than your FAVS in their ENTIRE Body!!! Only Talented B****** win grammys (ala the reason why Britney, gaga, & Rihanna have so few). & B**** for Bey to be so great in so many other areas shes a damn good actress. #B**** BYE

  44. JayDeuce July 31, 2010

    ^^^^^
Beyonce is your name, and do you think before you type? Only talented b****** win grammys?SMH

  45. X,Y,”and Z” July 31, 2010

… She’s interesting, to say the least! But, for the moment my attention is fully-focused in dispatching, TGJ’s favorite daughter, Kelly Rowland, to the dust-bin of irrelevancy and “the-not-deserving-of who’ll-only-excel-in mediocrity …!”

    Say one thing, though, she DOES have the looks, a personality, AND A VOICE …!! All without ‘layer-upon-layer caked-on make-up’; “pretentious cute-and-comely demeanor” *cough*Kelly Rowland*cough, or-any-a wig, weaved or-any-a glued-on, laced-up falsehoods …!!

    X,Y,”and Z” — OUT ..!!

  46. AJ July 31, 2010

Great interview! Melanie does have a nice personality but I gotta point out what she said about the ‘models’ topping the charts.

I hope she wasn’t taking a jab at RIHANNA because at the beginning of the interview she clearly said that her songwriting on RIRI’s second album helped her in the industry. If anything she needs to be kissing Rihanna’s ass and sending her muffin baskets!

  47. S*** July 31, 2010

^^ NO, Its the other way around. Rihgoata needs to be kissing a lot of asses right now: Beyonce, Melonie, Jay Z, Neyo, Dream & several other producers. If it werent for such PPL, Rihgoata would be flipping burgers right now in Barbados.

  48. Kyle July 31, 2010

I LOVE HER! Great interview too:) Can’t wait for the new album.

  49. VA STAND UP!!! July 31, 2010

Damn In never ceases to amaze me how these post get! A bunch of ignorant narrow minded people! How ironic that they are all a lil miss someone’s stans! SMH!

Well I liked Melanie Fiona before, and I LOVE her now! This interview was great and insightful. It really
She came across so cool and genuine. She answered all the questions honestly and respectfully.

I love what she said about the ‘models topping the charts’. I like that she didn’t say any names but admitted that it was frustrating. She kept it classy, but I am sure there was more she wanted to say.

I remember seeing her during CB’s tribute and it warmed my heart to see her singing along to the words of ‘Man In the Mirror’. There were many others who I caught singing along, (i.e. Taraji Henson) but Melanie really stood out to me! I am so glad she gave her POV about his performance that night. Being that she was actually THERE she could give a proper insight on the mood in the building during his performance and breakdown. Judging by her words and the reactoin of the audiance that night you could tell his tears were real.

I also agree with what she said as far as Ne-Yo and CB. I would go with Ne-Yo as far as song writing, but CB when it comes to performance. Ne-Yo can’t touch CB on a stage!

  50. connor July 31, 2010

Funny comment, but I agree. We all know that she doesn’t write her own songs, so she needs the writers, not the other way around.
Anyway, I love Melanie Fiona and I cannot wait to hear more music from her because she is very talented. Her song “Ay Yo” has a very positive message and I love it.

  52. The truth teller July 31, 2010

@ KD why are getting angry? Truth hurts huh?

B****? yawl should be calling HOOCHIEyonce a b****. I mean i’ve had enuf of her cheating old a$$. the only reason why she is still popular is coz she Kisses the devils crotch everyday but now ENUF is ENUF. stay on that break for gud penisyonce.

    P.S. oh! about that grammy I meant what I said. She wil NEVER in her entire life get an OSCAR, maybe its best that she concentrates on what she does BEST, rubbing her v-jj on the floor!!! ……{{[(SNGLE LADIES)]}}

  53. The truth teller July 31, 2010

ON the subject now. Melanie is Great. I love her songs ‘Give it 2 me ryt’ and ‘and it kills me’.

  54. MaZ July 31, 2010

I heard about Melanie Fiona’s music back in 2008. Thanks to Concreteloop!

It’s 2010 and Thatgrapjuice finally took a look at her. It was about time.

She came across really well on this one. Some questions (Like Nicki Minaj/ Lil’kim beef) has nothing to do with her. Was it really necessary?

I like her soul and music. Wish her the best. I’m sure she has the potential to make it here in Europe.

  55. JAZ0195 July 31, 2010

I agree with her about the models topping the charts

It’s a shame real hard working artists struggle to get to the top while others only rely on looks and gimmicks

  56. trueloverofmusic July 31, 2010

@ thekiddz real music is something that comes from the heart and is made for the love of music, not just solely to make money. it is something that you can feel in your heart. like when i listen to melanie fiona i feel the passion she has for singing and music.

  57. WHITEJESUS July 31, 2010

models topping the charts really is that why she went and covered the same bob song the ”model” did out of hundreds of songs.she supposedly wrote for the ”model” in the past only to come back and talk s*** it’s keri hilson all over again, bitter much 🙂 dumb trick stay pressed.

  58. Curtis July 31, 2010

    Great girl!

  59. Curtis July 31, 2010

Sam is such a f***** though I know he was totally thinking of Rihanna but I know know for sure that Melanie Fiona was probably thinking about other people, it doesnt seem like she has any ill wil towards Rihanna at all.

Spam and Rent are SOOO pressed about Rihannas success, its disgusting

  60. Curtis July 31, 2010

when she said not about FASHION and rihanna is the forefront of that… well aswell as gaga maybe she was, if she was then this b**** can sink

but i think shes gorgeous and so talented, and soo soo well spoken.

sam is worth nothing and sounds like a silly child.

  62. S*** July 31, 2010

When she said the words “Fashion & Gimmicks” she was obviously referring mainly to Rihanna & Gaga. There are many others but these are the main ones right now.

100% cosign. But you can tell she was mainly talking about Rhianna. Rhianna really can’t sing tho. Gaga can!
