New Song: John Legend, Melanie Fiona, Common & The Roots – ‘Wake Up’

John Legend and The Roots have called on Common and Melanie Fiona for their new single. ‘Wake Up Everybody’ – a take on the Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes’ classic – is lifted off of their upcoming albim, ‘Wake Up!’, which stores on September 21st. Give it a listen below:

The entire team did a good job. While they did not outshine the original, the inclusion of Fiona’s fluid vocals and Common’s energy was certainly welcomed. If only music like this was able to find it’s way to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 instead of the filth that has become the norm.

Hit or Miss?

This has been floating round for a week or so and should have been featured earlier rather than Britneys shot extensions!

As a fan of the Roots jazz- and soul-infused albums, it always saddens me to hear their beautiful symphonic music go underappreciated. Melonie Fiona and Jazmine Sullivan deserves the same coverage as other Billboard top-selling artists as well.

Melanie made this song for me, her vocals are on point

    @Piat

Exactly. Melanie Fiona and Jazmine Sullivan are so underrated its disgusting.

Loved this tune by the way. Ms. Fiona always slays me. Love her 😀

Melanie Fiona sounds a lot like Monica! It’s scary, something about her tone.

The song is cool, but it’s been done so many times and this doesn’t particularly at anything new so what’s the point?

    *reaching out to U*
So I know this comment is random but I’m coming to the readers of that grapejuice for sum help. I recently went through a horrible break up with my ex and I’m still hurting over it. He’s now with sumone new.and it’s killing me…
but music is my outlet; my medicine and that’s why I’m coming to the readers of TGJ, because over the last 2 years of coming to this site daily I’ve learned that you readers have and amazing knowledge of different music and genres. So I need sum good new music to help me overcome this heartbreak. I need new songs of encouragement, empowerment (in the vein of “i will survive”). Right now my ipod is filled with nothing but love songs 🙁 .
so I wanna thank you for reading and thank you in advance for ur help. I could really use it <3

I like that single cover, really unique.

Not that big of either of the artists listed so I will have to let this song run into me rather tuning in to hear it!

    @ phatmat44

I am sorry u feel that way but it will pass – but why would u say it is killing u that the beast is with someone else? The guy is full of s*** so u should not be in love with someone like that anyways. Go clean ureself up (revamp wardrobe, eating healthy for cute body and clear skin) and enjoy ure new found freedom and please be open to date all races as us women like to hole punch ourselves into one single culture, when there is a wide variety of brothers out there who will treat u like a QUEEN!! Try to find things to occupy ure time and stop dwelling on the dickhead – Ps don’t listen to any info about him from anyone as that will not do u any good and if u see his ass on the street please give him the ultimate BLANK!! that means if a car suddenly crushes him in front of u – my dear girlfriend u just walk right pass cos u did not hear or see anything!! I mean come on irrelevant people should remain non existant and irrelevant. We all have choices at the end of the day and sometimes two people decide to be together and then maybe later one person may decide they want out so this is ok cos it could have been the other way round and it could have been u who walked away so in as much as u don’t like it u need to understand the concept of us humanbeings cos we can be fickle sometimes. Jill Scott , Jasmine Sullivan.

I love the song any way, but the new version is ok. The keys are a little off. I understand why because its a harld song for a female. i sing so i know. That’s only thing.

Love the voices, just think its a little off key when the female part comes on.

I still love to here it
