New Video: Janelle Monae – ‘Cold War’

Published: Thursday 5th Aug 2010 by Sam

Janelle Monae has been garnering much in the way of acclaim (both critically and commercially) as of late. The quirky singer looks set to continue the trend, following today’s debut of the video for ‘Cold War’ – the latest single to be lifted from her ‘The ArchAndroid (Suites II and III of IV)’ LP

Check out the concept-focal clip below…

Despite featuring little more than Monae’s face, the video proved both emotive and engaging. A recession-special which actually pretty decent. Good stuff.

  2. ZIONOLOGY August 5, 2010

    Nice video…GoJanelle.
Cant wait for her to make a video for “babopbyeya”

  3. ADE August 5, 2010

This video might just make me like her as an artist. None of that extra s*** and tuxedos, just simple and effective. I really enjoyed this, love the song too.

  4. TheBaddestBitch August 5, 2010

Don’t get me wrong ….I love Janelle and her album is the best this year but WTF @ this video.

I didn’t expect that at all. They could have used some budget.

  5. Nika August 5, 2010

luved it – reminds me of when D’Angelo just sang in front of th camera ((picturing that site in my head…hmmm.))

  6. MaZ August 5, 2010

Love the song but excepted more from the video

  7. MB August 5, 2010

I’m a HUGE Janelle Monae fan since day one, but I’m so disappointed! I love simplicity, but this just giving me nothing!

Plus this has already been done! Janet Jackson’s “Nothing” and D’Angelo’s “Untitled”

Oh well… 🙁 I’m just mad I’ve been waiting MONTHS just to see a closeup of her face and crying? unh uh

  8. MIASMES August 5, 2010

she doesnt need props, she doesnt need dance routines, she doesnt need outrageous controversial stuff, because THAT IS TALENT. I was crying by the end of the clip, because its the lyrics and the music that reach out ot people, not someone gyrating on your screen.

    Beautiful!

I LOOOOOOOOOOOOVED IT!!!!! She sent out a strong message with that video!!! #TeamMonae’ 🙂

Absolutely f**king awesome. I love this girl’s music sooooo much – I’ve just been playing the album on my iPod just before I got back to my gran’s and went online. And love the video – just cause a couple of people before have done stripped down vids doesn’t mean we can’t have another one
    @MB
Well I could look at her face for ages, tooooo beautiful – and that’s from a straight girl.

  14. Robier August 5, 2010

I luv her but this sht scared me. I couldn’t look at her too damn long. Uh Janelle booo…. Noooooo!!!

  15. ~TeAM WeeZY~ August 5, 2010

I f*cking LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this song! Geez! I listen to it like a million times in a row on my iPOD. I love her and her album. She is a musical genius!

If this is a recession-special, it’s a shame, because Diddy would spend LOADS of money on a crappy ass Dirty Money video. And I’m sure the idiot would spend even more on a crappy video for that talentless fool Cassie.

Anyway, I kinda liked the video. I LOVED her raw emotion! Awwww!

  16. C-mo August 5, 2010

She is the most artistic in the industry right now (there is room for everyone and everyone is on their own path). She makes it about the art, about the music, and I get so much more of the lyrics watching this because there is not any spectacle. Low budget is needed in an economy that overspends, is in a depression and with people who don’t have. She is a very conscious artist and I love the messages she sends out in the universe.

  17. ~TeAM WeeZY~ August 5, 2010

BTW: I hate her eyebrows. Yuk!

  18. The AlexanderTG August 5, 2010

    @TEAM WHEEZY
Yeah – she’s a beautiful girl, but I’m not sure about the eyebrows either. Hate having to critisize her for anything, but you’re right – she needs some help with those – its pretty easy to sort them out – just a bit of threading needed

  19. ImaVainBxtch August 5, 2010

She didn’t have any clothes on, and u couldnt see her hair because she did not want people to focus on that. She wanted people to focus on and digest the lyrics of the song. The lyrics touched her, hence the reason she broke down and cried. I like the video, i never seen this side of Janelle before, and i’m glad she showed it. It proves that shes human just like us, and that she has feelings. Hate it or love it, it’s her best video to date in my opinion simply because of how powerful the video was.

  20. andre August 5, 2010

love this girl!!!!… the is is not the final video people… so… but i like the concept!

  21. Lyirk London August 5, 2010

I llove it.. i love the fact that she kept me ingaged an d the camera never leaves her face… this is when music videjos become art… it made me emotional just by watching it… i lovved it.. it said so much without having to even give u a thousand frames.. keep it up

  22. Who? Me August 5, 2010

    @ImaVainBxtch
Thank goodness someone else gets the point.
She wants you to comprehend and really take in the words coming from her.
    I loved it.

  23. S*** August 5, 2010

During the last half somebody must have showed her how much her Album sold…

Yes the Industry is very cold 🙁

WHY DON’T YOU LOVE ME?? >>>>>>

  24. The AlexanderTG August 5, 2010

/\/\/\/\/\ Just goes to prove talent and sales aren’t always related
Way better picture on the Gravvy than that old one.

  25. True Blue August 5, 2010

    @ Team Weezy and Alexander:

What’s wrong with her eyebrows? Yeah, they’re thick, but it’s not like she got a unibrow or something, I have the same eyebrows as her, and I intentionally avoid tweezing them.

Anyway, I like an artist who goes for rawness and simplicity in an era of tricks and gimmicks, but I think this song deserved a more elaborate video.

    @ S***:

Album sales don’t dictate quality, only popularity.

  26. Val August 5, 2010

    @ S***

HAHAHA, if commercial success depended on real God-given talent, most of these artist would be broke. Quality over quantity, my friend. But you probably don’t give a crap, so whatever.

Anyway, Janelle will be a legend! Nothing can stop true talent and a real desire to bring good to the world.

  27. UGh August 6, 2010

Didn’t watch it yet but i just wanted to say that this is my fav song off the album. I’m so happy so did a video for it

  28. UGh August 6, 2010

oh wow, i loved it. it was plain and simple. like someone said it forced you to digest the lyrics. she had me making all kinda faces though…lol she’s a great performer even when she isn’t doing anything. that my dears is what you call talent.

  29. The AlexanderTG August 6, 2010

    @TRUE BLUE
Can’t speak for TW, but for me its not the fact they’re thick – its that their too sharped edged, especially along the bottom line – they’d look better with a softer edge – that’d be more natural looking.

  30. True Blue August 6, 2010

^^ Yeah, I see what you mean, though.

  31. Yvonne August 6, 2010

She is incredible. I love this video. She went in on this : )

  32. KD August 6, 2010

Listened to her album…didn’t get it. She’s just too artsy for my tastes…bring on the disposable music.

  33. RAY August 7, 2010

F****** LOVE THIS TALENTED ASS ANDROID!!!!!!!!! xoXOXo

  34. Landen August 10, 2010

Not the Final Video. However, She Truly does Have a big Heart
