Brandy: “To Hell With ‘Human'”

Published: Friday 17th Sep 2010 by Sam

Viewers of Brandy‘s hit VH1 reality show ‘A Family Business’ will recall the singer’s disdain for 2008’s ‘Human’ – her most recent studio album. However, in a new interview with OUT.com, the 30 year old elaborated on her dislike of the LP and its chart performance.

Her comments after the jump…

Via OUT.com:

Let’s talk about your most recent album, Human.
To hell with that album!

Why? You didn’t like it?
I believe a lot of the songs on that album have inspired some of the fans. In that respect it’s a blessing. But, where I felt creatively it could’ve gone and the space I was in creatively, I needed everybody around me to be in that same space.

What would you have liked out of that album?
First of all, it would’ve been a different album, but with the same inspiration and same blessing for other people. It would’ve been hotter music and a hotter look. Number 1 on the charts! Platinum!

Which brings up a good point. Your career has slowed down over the years in terms of chart success. How does it feel when you’re no longer number 1?
It feels terrible. I say this in the most humble way, but I’m a winner. So, when a winner feels failure, it doesn’t feel right or good. It’s a like a champion who gets knocked out. That’s why I’m so hungry on making this next project about what feels good to my gut. When I follow my intuition or my creative guidance, there’s success.

Despite actually enjoying ‘Human’, I must give kudos where they’re due; it’s not often an artist displays such frankness – especially about their own project. One can only hope the stars align for her this time around.

Your thoughts?

ummmm… can u tell me why she allowed it to be released then? Cos if I did not like a project it would DEF not get pushed out… It sounds like she is just salty it didn’t perform well because if it did this would be another story. Smh

  2. Twitter.com/JBvanilla September 17, 2010

thats my favorite brandy album to date!!!!!!

  3. Robjr Loves Ciara September 17, 2010

HUMAN is an epic album, it’s alot better than the garbage that’s out now

  4. Yellow Gorilah September 17, 2010

Brandy is LEGEND! I dont care what other people say

Human was the TRUTH! the END

  5. Mileka September 17, 2010

^ I love that, and completely agree.
I enjoyed “Human” almost as much as I’ve enjoyed all Brandy’s previous albums and was definitely inspired by songs like “True” and “Long Distance” but I can see why she felt bad about the album. Love you Brandy!
PS post like this that just tell it like it is without all the shade and negative energy are what I’ve come to like about this site!

to hell with Brandy. Her reality show made me not like her, she’s so annoying.

  7. J Rock September 17, 2010

    She is a whiner….SMH

  8. Idunno September 17, 2010

I don’t like her response..Brandy is focused on the wrong thing and it sounds like she is just desperate for more success..She’s only downing Human because it didn’t perform well, and I can’t respect that..If you thought it was such a bad album, why release it? So if it would have gone platinum, would she have liked it?

I always found her humility fake. She only pulled the humble card when she wasn’t as successful. She’s too focused on becoming the top chick, and that means she will be willing to compromise things as an artist to get there. Watch and See. Her new single Lifeguard is too POP, and it won’t help her fan base.

  9. AKisdabest September 17, 2010

if Human would of sold 2 millions copies WW she wouldnt be sayin this IMO

  10. MaZ September 17, 2010

Why always hotter look? hotter music?

    Be yourself Brandy!

  11. Mileka September 17, 2010

I was gonna say the same thing that akisdabest, idunno and carl have said, because her response to How does it feel when you’re no longer number 1? is questionable. But then there’s her “But, where I felt creatively it could’ve gone and the space I was in creatively, I needed everybody around me to be in that same space” comment. I’ve heard/seen interviews from artist’s who’s albums HAVE gone platinum yet they felt the same way. They don’t always have as much control and input over the direction and release of an album as we assume, especially on a new label.

  12. danisha September 17, 2010

She didnt allow it to be released. When you are signed to a major label they are in control.

It’s not all about what YOU WANT.

  13. Nando September 17, 2010

Human is one of the best albums in this decade. And i am not the only one who think that. It disappoint me Brandy’s opinion of this album.

  14. Trina September 17, 2010

Gosh she’s SO DAMN FAKE !! The only reason she said that is because she flopped HARD !! If she had been at the top of all charts with human, that would have been a total different story !! B**** PLEASE !!

  15. BENJAMIN September 17, 2010

The album could have been a lot more lively, it had too many slow ballads, but had good messages in them. But if she is really hungry to get back out there, she should nix this DWTS and finish up that record. If Monica can return, so can she.

  16. TresChic September 17, 2010

The album did have several songs that were similarly themed, with slow tempos. There weren’t any “What About Us” type rnb dance tracks, so maybe that’s why she feels it was a limited album. Anyway I still liked that album, and support Brandy! Her music’s always been decent.

  17. Mr.M September 17, 2010

    WOW WOW WOW !!!!!!!

I really feel SO effing bad right now

I always consider Brandy as a TRUE artist , BUT she seems to be more into sales

and don’t actually care or be proud of creating a REAL MUSIC.

B****, your album ‘Human’ is one of the best R&B albums of ALL time!!!!

it is the reason why I really loved you and RESPECT you.

NOW you said ‘TO HELL WITH HUMAN’

If that album went platinum you wouldn’t say that, b****.

you’re hypocrite and got no confidence in what you’ve done in your life.

It doesn’t matter if the album sold well or not

its a matter of creating good music and inspire people.

BUT you seems to just care about $$$ + attention.

I really lost respect for you as an artist, Brandy.

  18. danisha September 17, 2010

When you have not been consistently on the top of the charts since the 90’s You would be into sales too, Record labels can careless about your ART or your love for music if your not selling so please.

Its bout all about that, She want to WIN, nothing wrong with that and if she says to hell with HUMAN, then so be it.

  19. Idunno September 17, 2010

Something IS wrong with only being concerned with being on TOP. @Danisha

  26. Dasja September 17, 2010

Don’t say that Brandy , i’ll admit it took a minute for me to like Human but in the end I think you had some hits in there that weren’t released like True, shattered heart, and first in love..,. Something is missing was hot 2 !!!

  27. Confessions of a Confused City Girl September 17, 2010

I love brandy. Never say Never and Full Moon were amazing albums! Hopefully this time around she satisfies her own expectations.

  28. JT September 17, 2010

To Sam and all of you fools talking about how great and honest Brandy is: YOU’RE F****** MORONS.

Look at her answers when asked what she wanted out of the album. She does not give ONE tangible example of what could have made that album better. You know why? She doesn’t f****** have one. She’s a b******* artist. The album didn’t sell and she wants to wave it away with one hand and make it sound like none of it was her fault.

“Hotter music and a hotter look”? ARE YOU F****** KIDDING ME?

  29. Yoko September 17, 2010

I agree with your first comment IDUNNO. Love and respect Brandy as an artist. My fear is that she is going to compromise who she is, and i’m afraid she already started to do that.

IMO Human is an amazing album. She had a lot of substance and depth in there, as well as her signature vocals. Her true fans appreciated that. The industry is getting vicious, now more than ever they are demanding sales and chart toppers which is one reason why image has surpassed actual talent and or content.

  30. NICKY September 17, 2010

    BRANDY WTF?!

    I LOVED HUMAN!!!!

AND NOW YOU SAY TO HELL WITH IT???? GIRL, YOU WILL NOT BE ON BEYONCE OR RIHANNAS LEVEL!!

YOU ARE THE VOICE OF RB BUT KNOW YOUR PLACE BOO!!!!

  31. truthis September 17, 2010

Brandy sound so fake and concerned with the wrong things…just sing and be YOU!!

thats the famn problem she been too busy putting on fronts and trying to please
she got caught up and lost herself….brandy almost sounds angry and arrogant!

  32. Independent Thinker September 17, 2010

I’m almost insulted by her comment. So because Human wasn’t the commercial success that she was hoping it would be she simply dismisses it. Some of us LOVE that album. It IS an inspirational album, and in an industry full of “for the moment” music, it was nice to be able to support a substantial work of art. It’s so easy to become lost in gimmicks and gotcha’s and trendy little diddys that mean absolutely nothing and have no staying power. Human is a timeless album that I actually want to share with people. I’m sorry to hear that Brandy would rather record a typical “hot” record that tops the charts than a meaningful song that makes a difference in someones life. Since when is it all about numbers?

I guess I can’t be too mad at her. She has to eat too. I just wish there was at least one contemporary artist left who’s not afraid to say, ‘To hell with numbers. To hell with charts. I’m an artist who’s music has substance and I’m proud of what I’ve put my heart and soul into; even if it’s not a commercial phenomenon.

I feel like that statement was a cop-out. Human was obviously Brandy’s most personal, most intimate, most meaningful album to date; so I’m sure it hurt that it wasn’t recieved well. But, to throw the album out with the garbage as though it never meant anything to her is a slap in the face to all who actually did support the project.

As far as her being a “winner” is concerned. Brandy might as well get over it. She’s a pop star. A very talented pop star, but a pop star none the less, and all pop stars have their season. Brandy’s season has come and gone. I hope she doesn’t think everything she does is gonna top the charts; because if she’s waiting for another Never Say Never moment, she’ll be waiting for a long time. Brandy is not a teeny bopper anymore. Her music should reflect where she is as a person, not where she wishes to be on the charts.

I’ll tell you one thing, if Brandy serves up some cookie cutter crap that any Keri,Bey or RiRi could have recorded, I sure as hell wont be buying the album. I don’t care how “hot” the records are or how many chart toppers she has. IF IT’S NOT AUTHENTIC, I DON’T WANT IT.

  33. TC ;D September 17, 2010

she just seems like all she cares about is the sales..at least from this interview :/

  36. Miss Chick Boom September 17, 2010

    @TC ;D

I never downed your favorite artist… So don’t down my favorite artist.

I like Brandy, but I was just stating how TGJ is contradicting themselves.

Most of Brandy’s albums came out pre-download era so of course she will have more albums sold than Bey, do I care…no. She ain’t had a hit album since what…2002?

And Beyonce and Brandy are vocally different. They both can sing, but have different types of vocals. I honestly prefer Beyonce’s vocals, but I would never down brandy’s. Yes Brandy may be the better singer, but Beyonce is the VOCALIST.

And since u wanna go there with me…

YOUR FAV. IS A BEYONCE STAN!!!

    http://www.youtube.com/user/Here4BeyonSLAY#p/u/9/R35wtq0YzGM

Praising her in interviews and expressing her love for her on twitter.

  37. cash September 17, 2010

shes always been very successful, in terms of U.S sells she’s 9th in R&B, as a female artist. thats why she feels she’s a winner, which for the most part has always been true. i LOVE her, and her last album was good, wrong 1st single choice, too woe is me. My favorite is Full Moon. She does need to bring the heat nonetheless.

  38. Idunno September 17, 2010

@ TC;D Please grow up..Nobody cares what she HAS accomplished and it’s no need for you to dig up her PAST accomplishments to PROVE something to anyone. You, like Brandy, sound insecure. Only insecure people feel the need to talk about what they DID in the past. She’s SOO huge but can’t sell more than 200k total now? Why is that? Now she’s doing family reality shows and DWTS to re-gain some mainstream attention. How desperate.

And if I was Rodney I would throw shade at her too because she is wrong for throwing him under the bus like that. She’s as Fake as that “marriage” she was in..And this is coming from a career-long supporter of hers.

  39. raraskils September 17, 2010

WOW. she is so insecure and such a hypocrite.
when the album was coming out she was hyping it and promoting it like there was no end
but once it tanked she totally hates the project???

its sad to see people who have been in the industry so long and they still think that everything is about chart success rather than quality, artistic music. smdh.

no wonder i’ve never liked brandy.

  40. raraskils September 17, 2010

she is such a hottie, but seriously, she is so FAKE!!!!!!

  42. Kyle September 17, 2010

Artists who say they had little creative control over their poor selling albums are just bitter because they loved it and it didn’t reach the success that they wanted it too. That was a solid R&B album and I don’t think there was much she could’ve done differently to make it perform any better. I just think the days of her being a multi-platinum seller are OVER. What is she going to say when her next album drops and it sells just as poorly as “Human” did? “I had no creative control, that album was just bad!” hahahaha, excuses, excuses, excuses.

  43. Miss Chick Boom September 17, 2010

    @TC ;D

    Brandy is shittin on Beyonce?

    REALLY???

    OKAY…

u used ‘shittin’ as in present time.

presently brandy ain’t shittin on nobody but herself. her own little brother is shittin on her.

And if u really wanna go there Brandy wasn’t shitin on nobodies in the 90’s either.

Mariah, Mary, and Janet all took took big nasty shits on her predator lookin ass.

and these stans of these irrelevant flops wanna know why bey stans go in on there fav.?

Take your ghetto miseducated ass to sleep. u have been dismissed boo boo.

  44. Diane September 17, 2010

Brandy is Cinderella and that’s what is important to me. No one will ever be able to take that away from her. However, the last Brandy song I’ve had on rotation was Wanna Be Down Remix – that s*** is bonafide classic.

  45. vegasgirl September 17, 2010

It is sad that she HATES Human , whether it be because of low sales or whatever, but unfortunately sales and $$$ generated in the music business do count, to the artist and to the label. Now for some reason sales count to a percentage of the buying public and a lot of them frequent this blog. I still believe there are tons of people who don’t know and don’t care about sales, single success, etc, they just like what they like.

IF the labels didn’t put pressure on artists to sale, sale, sale, maybe better music would be out right now. I believe that in the last 3 years some of the most horrific mainstream music has been made, easily forgettable. What’s scary is how many people eat this s*** up, maybe they don’t know any better. That in turn influences what the label wants the artist to put out, the label releases s*** music and we eat the s***. It’s a terrible cycle

Brandy is a great singer that did have a lot of success in the 90’s but every artist will have peaks and valleys, creatively and commercially. She really just wants to be relevant again but don’t they all?

  46. Perio September 17, 2010

I DISAGREE WITH BRANDY’S OPIOIN ON HUMAN

HUMAN WAS EPIC I LOVED THAT ALBUM

SHE IS JUST MAD BECAUSE IT FLOPPED BUT IT FLOPPED CUZ THE RIGHT SINGLES WERENT RELEASED AND YOU DINT GO HARD ON PROMOTION FOR THAT RECORD

I COULD LISTEN TO HUMAN FROM START TO FINISH AND THAT THE EPTIOME OF A EPIC CD

I HOPE SHE GETS BACK TO WHERE SHE USED TO BE SHE SEEMS SO LOST SINCE THE ACCIDENT AND SHE IS DESPRELTELY TRYNA BE ON THE SUSPERSTAR LEVEL SHE WAS ONCE AT…..

    TAKE NOTES FROM MONICA BRANDY!

  47. hahahhahahhaa September 17, 2010

I hate when artists talk bad about their own music. Especially someone whose been in the came for a long time like Brandy. Her talking bad about her own music just shows that the industry is full of puppets. When the album came out she was proud of it, but now it’s “to hell with it.

I personally liked the album. “Departed”, “First and Love”, and “True” are my favorites.

  48. TC ;D September 17, 2010

To say Human was underrated is BEYOND an understatement! That album is the s***. Loved it! I thought it had lyrical depth and substance. And it was actually her best album vocally. I’m anxious to see what direction she takes with this new album. I know she’s gonna release some stuff in hopes for it to sell but I hope she doesn’t eliminate everything that makes her so wonderful.

Brandy is THE best vocalist, PERIOD! Her vocals are so damn underrated it’s ridiculous, man! She could sing better than most female artists, past or present! Alot of people think that because a singer isn’t a loud and/or powerful singer that it means that they lack vocally. Wrong. Brandy is the ‘vocal bible.’ 🙂

  50. Monika September 17, 2010

I agree with Brandy. Human was not her best work for real. it wasn’t that artistic to me. i’ve heard what Brandy can do, and Human is not her best. i will continue to support Brandy because her music and her artistry. the girl is a BEAST!

although i do love the Human album. 🙂

  51. Monika September 17, 2010

who’s not fake? you will be surprised how fake your favorite artist is. many people know you favorite aritst personally. you don’t! you probably fake your ownself.

  52. Soulful Roses September 17, 2010

    I love Brandy 🙂

  53. Miss Chick Boom September 17, 2010

    @TC ;D

    I’m dumb?

okay, but you can’t even type a grammitically correct sentence.

and u came in here attacking me when i clearly stated the double standards that beyonce has. i was not trying to downplay brandy in anyway possible.

and i have never undermined brandy’s talent. yes i do love her vocals and i have always argued that i thought she was a better singer than monica when others try to push her to the side because she was more commercially successful.

Afrodisiac is one of my top 5 favorite albums of all time. but your dumb ass commin in here trying to start a argument getting on the defensive made me go in on her.

yes brandy was the ultimate brand in the 90s but when u look at ‘music’ sales janet, mariah, and mary all exceeded her.

sidenote: Brandy is not the reason why Beyonce has a career.

  54. Andrew September 17, 2010

    I love Human xD

IVE ALWAYS BEEN A FAN OF BRANDY BUT INTERVIEWS LIKE THIS JUST SAY ANOTHER BITTER RICH ARTIST. IF EVERYBODY STOP TRYING TO BE LIKE BEYONCE THEN YOU MIGHT NUMBER 1 CHICK IN THE GAME

  57. Brandon September 17, 2010

Human could´ve been a better album. If you compare it 2 her previous work.
It didn´t have the hotness… it´s an okay album.

  58. Trina September 17, 2010

    @ TC ;D

B**** YOU BETTER SHUT YOUR ASS UP RIGHT NOW !! WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE EXCEPT A STUPID-ASS BRANDY STAN ?? YOUR IDOL IS A FAKE ASS FLOP WHO DOESN’T CARE ABOUT RELEASING AN ALBUM FROM HER SOUL, BUT ONLY SOMETHING THAT’LL BE AT THE TOP OF ALL CHARTS !! SECOND THING, YOUR FLOP ASS FAV IS ON DANCING WITH THE STARS RIGHT NOW!! ACTUALLY, EVERYBODY KNOWS THATS THE ONLY STARS YOU CAN FIND ON THAT SHOW ARE : 1- HAS-BEEN (BRANDFLOP, DAVID HASSEFLOP, …) AND 2- NEVER BEEN (THE KARDASHIANS …). STOP BEING DELISIONAL YOU BIATCH!! HA

  59. Trina September 17, 2010

    @ TC ;D

AND AT LEAST, THE BEYONCE STANS ARE STANNING FOR A REAL PERFORMER, A REAL SINGER, A REAL ARTIST WHO DOESN’T MAKE DISRESPECTFUL COMMENTS LIKE BRANDFLOP DID TO HER FANS BY SAYING WHAT SHE SAID !! YOU’RE SO STUPID YOU DUMBASS NASTY S**** !!

  60. True September 17, 2010

Okay, so everyone is saying she’s only saying “To Hell with Human” because of it’s underperformance? If that is the case we can assume she feels the same way about Afrodisiac, which was criminally underrated and is considered a flop by many. WE CANNOT DENY THE MASTERPIECE THAT AFRODISIAC WAS THOUGH. Although, as a fan of Brandy, I liked Human and was happy for new music from her…. I didn’t love it like I had loved her previous works. Brandy is a REAL artist. Most real artists are harder on themselves than anybody. I don’t think it is about the sales at all. I think she really feels that the album was not up to par…and it wasn’t. Who are we to say where her feelings are coming from and how she should feel about her own damn work?

  61. the truth teller September 17, 2010

    LOL @ FRESURBANENT

your not interested in the posts your only here for your busness! 🙂 🙂

  62. KD September 17, 2010

I wouldn’t be suprised if this money hungry b**** praised the album to the heavens when it first came out. Did someone hold a gun to her head and force her to record the damn songs. I love her voice but I will never buy any of her albums just in case she says to hell with them (after I have spent my hard-earned money on them).

  63. LUV-LEE September 17, 2010

I am a big Brandy fan!! That being said, I am a little disapointed in her comments. I agree with everyone else. I feel she is only saying these things because of how the album performed on the charts.

I remember during her show, when she was talking to DarkChild, she told him that she didn’t believe in the work that he did for her project. I remember the look on his face. I thought that was a low blow and it looked like a surprise to him. Obviously she was not talking like that when they were creating the album.

It really makes me appreciate how Usher stood by his album Here I Stand on his Behind the Music. Even though it underperformed, he said out right that it was the most honest he has ever been on an album. He didn’t disown it because it was critizied.

THE DEFINITION is still my favorite song on that album and one of my favorite songs. PERIOD. Produced by DarkChild. 😉

  64. Bryan September 17, 2010

i actually love that album its AMAZING brandy u need to #sitdown and behave yo self tryna b sumtin ur not smh ….. stick to ur roots plz & dnt embarrass yourself

  65. bobs September 17, 2010

AGREED! This is HONEST. No spin. I like it. Too bad THAT GRAPE JUICE CURSE took that album down in flames! Here’s hoping Sam and Trent HATE her next album, so it has a chance at Chart Success.

This really makes me want to unsubscribe to Brandy. With an attitude like this, I really can’t see her next album being more than this. She has a major uphill battle.

  67. NAS ( B Rockah Stan 4eva) September 17, 2010

@Kyle and the rest of the beyond hopeful fans! At least she is telling the truth about how she felt with regards to what went on with the album hence you shouldn’t misinterperate her. Everyone mostly me knows HUMAN is an unduly good album yet underrated which you or any other humanbeing would feel the same if your hard work wasn’t aknowledged. Don’t get it twisted whatsoever and hope for the best for our girl Brockah as you clearly know that good albums are always left out when it comes to sales…………..(BIONIC) ring any bells????????????????????

  68. NAS ( B Rockah Stan 4eva) September 17, 2010

    Stay mad HATERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  69. stan September 17, 2010

i’d love to hear “human” with more r&b influence.

brandy’s comment was rather rude, though. she could’ve said it in a more respectful way.

  70. Ogz September 17, 2010

I have to be honest Human was Brandys most forgettable album, the lyrically the songs where there and Brandys voice and Harmonys are amazing but the beats where Garbage, dated old skool Pop, all the great tracks like List never made the cut, that album is a FAIL if you compare it too Aprodisiac where every beat was HOT LIKE FIRE!!!!

  71. TheYoungLion September 17, 2010

    The Boy Is Monica’s….. DEATH

  72. DEALwidIT September 17, 2010

    I love brandys HONESTY

YES human was body of work.. YEs it was inspirational… Remember guys not EVERYONE gets to see in the real inns and outs of making an album even on a reality show.. Shes already discussed the S*** she went thru wid RODNEY etc..

By Her Statements.. ‘ Not everyone was in the same space’ She could be refering to the Record Company or Rodney Jerkins not supporting her direction or giving her the right s*** she needed..

She wants to bring the heat this time.. shes not going to abandon her image for the industry now.. I think with the whole HUMAN era.. she wasnt the celebrity brandy that everyone knew..the record company in my eyes took advantage of a vunerable and human brandy..and took control.. i think she said that abit in her interviews… but shes DOPE and this track Lifeguard is different.. I look at it as the Family Mixtape album..

She didnt believe in the album because the work wasnt inspirational enuff for her.. wrong single choices..and videos werent all that gripping..

Brandy I want that MOESHA ERA/ NEVER SAY NEVER version of urself.. and ur voice at the forefront of your next album.. CANT WAIT
Im ALWays gona be a brandy STAN,

  73. kayla September 17, 2010

Im glad she said how she really felt about the album and all respect is due. And as a fan Human was great and could of done better if she had the right team behind her people were to focused on the details involving the accident when she came back not the music, plus single choice was poor. This time around if Brandy doesnt feel the music dont sing it. I know this album is going to blow us fans away because her drive and just how bad she wants success this time is evident on Human she was very Humble but this album Brandy needs to get cocky and remind people why she is still here.

  74. NAS ( B Rockah Stan 4eva) September 17, 2010

I really think that Brandy is being misunderstood. She worked with Darkchild (Rodney Jerkins). They have a past and considering that their sound was drastically different in comparison to her previous projects it’s plausible that she may feel that their chemistry was off due to his lack of intrest in making her album. Brandy’s music on “Human” wasn’t well rounded and though the album contained songs with plenty of depth and inspiring messages the sound was missing her usual grit and innovative style. During that time Darkchild worked with several artist that year (Janet – Feedback , Pussycat Dolls – When I grow up, just to name a few) that seem to boast the melodically contagious formula he uses in collaborating with Brandy. I just believe that Brandy felt as if she was being slighted. She have developed a strong working relationship with Darkchild and I think anyone would feel how she does if they feel that the energy in their creative work wasn’t a priority.

Some of you speak of how disappointed you are with Brandy talking numbers, when that’s the name of the game. There has to be some level of success in order to see an artist continue to make albums and see them evolve. It’s not that she has to compromise who she is as an artist, she has to fight to remain relevant! It’s not like she said she wanted to sell 3 million(she said platnium folks – she wants to produce albums that generate sells to keep the label happy). I swear some of you don’t think! I’m sure next week some of you will be giving us a rundown of some other artist on a different post stats! Don’t act like it won’t happen. Don’t trip when you see me do it either – because I’m telling you now, that I will.

Anyway, what you want to do is marry art and financial gain! Brandy has always done this and there’s nothing wrong with this being what you set out to do!

  78. royalkev September 18, 2010

One more thing, Afrodisiac didn’t sell that million copies that she was hoping for and you don’t hear her complaining about that album. Timberland was behind most of that creative process for it and she’s still willing to work with him now!

  81. Theman September 18, 2010

Brandy is very talented, i understand what she means. I think the label wanted her to release an album more than she herself. But she did walk around like this album was great which it probably is a good album. She has some great music.Brandy will be successful again. It’s not about making cliche music, but you also make music to be successful. She’s a winner like she said. She wants success. Whats wrong with that. I know it came off the wrong way. But when artists release new music their goal is for the album to sale well.

  82. Angie September 18, 2010

Human is not a bad album…certainly not my favorite though. True and A Capella have become two of my favorite Brandy songs ever. Damn… I really need another Brandy album. She is one of those few artists where everything comes together: musically, melodically, lyrically, she is an exceptional artist.

  83. NAS ( B Rockah Stan 4eva) September 18, 2010

Vote vote vote for Brockah and follow her on twitter!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lol @Independent Thinker…, one contemporary artist who can say ‘to hell with numbers’…, isn’t that what Christina Aguilera says in regards to Stripped, B2B and Bionic? Yet almost everyone on this blog clowns and rants negatively about such a statement when that particular artist just wants to make the music she feels passionate about lol. Just goes to show audiences are not content no matter what side of the fence an artist is coming from.

@JT: Brandy is not a ‘b******* artist’. No offence but after ‘Brandy’, ‘NSN’, ‘Full Moon’ and ‘Afrodesiac’…, (albums that all grew in talent and stature) yours was really a b******* statement.

@KD ‘did someone hold a gun to her head’…, in a word yes, no offence but you clearly do not understand the music industry and the millions of dollars at stake. Artists do have the freedom to record the music they love but if the label point blank refuse to put it out or accept it onto the final album then there’s really nothing an artist can do. We all heard how much material didn’t make the album, much of what was heard was superior to what made the album in fact. I’m sure she broke and made a compromise record the label was happy to stump up the budget for, thus the album was released. Rodney didn’t give her his best also, that is evident when comparing Human to Full Moon so I’m sure rather than dissing the fans she is merely salty at the whole Human project irrespective of sales.

I’ve no doubt Brandy wanted a ‘hotter’ album, by ‘hot’ I mean a more textured and timely project in line with her usual quality. Note she doesn’t slate the inspirational themes but just did not love the execution, any fan of hers will know the quality of the beats on Human were sub par and less special than her usual output…, it is only because she’s such a good singer with the ability to harmonise so well that it was salvageable at all but Human was missing a vital Brandy ingredient make no bones about it, I knew this on hearing it so I fully believe her comments as she has said no such thing about any of her other albums esp’ Afro which was the first to perform less than expected. Just remember her label had a vested interest in the project and likely did not want any ‘sass’ to appear on the album in light of the situation Brandy was coming back from. Shame, but it’s done and dusted so now she can get back to what she does best and believe me sales aside her next album will slay because she’s committed and no longer apologising for her uber talent. I just say bring it B;-P
