Melody Thornton Talks Solo Deal, Nicole Scherzinger & More

Published: Sunday 26th Sep 2010 by Sam

Melody Thornton is renown for her somewhat unappreciated vocal contributions to the Pussycat Dolls. With the group having now disbanded, the talented songstress is striking  out on her own.

In a recent interview with VIBE magazine, Thornton addressed many a topic including her reported feud with PCD front-woman Nicole Scherzinger, whether or not she has a solo deal, her future plans and more.

Her insightful comments after the jump…

On rumored Scherzinger feud:

Well, remember when Whitney and Mariah did that song together? It’s like, clearly they did a song together, so it’s not all that damn bad. As long as we respect each other, it’s okay. She does what she does, and I do what I do, and that’s that. You’re either a forgiving person and you can move on or you can hold on to those things. I’m not one of those people. I’m not gonna be a victim to what happened. It’s over. Bye. Keep it pushing.

On why PCD split:

Maybe a divorce is what you can attribute that split to. We were definitely tired and worked a lot. I’m seeing these people more than I see my family. I would be hurt if anything happened to any one of the girls. Doesn’t matter what they said or did ever. You can love someone and let ‘em go. It was just time to move on. As much as I care for all of the girls, I’m going to do what’s best for Melody from this point forward. I need to do what I want to do.

Her current label situation:

Yeah, I’m not at Interscope. I haven’t taken what’s been offered because I feel I deserve better. I believe in putting your best foot forward and swinging for the fence, and I’m going to have the kind of enthusiastic CEO behind me who’s like, ‘Yeah! That’s what it is!’ And I’m not afraid to wait for that. I am funding and recording on my own. And I love Interscope, by the way. They’re one of the best. [Jimmy Iovine] knows what he’s doing. If he loves you, you got it. It’s like why would I marry someone just because they have money? I also need to be loved. I need to be cherished.

Her solo career:

For me, it’s important for people to know that I do write. I will be writing the majority of what I am singing because it’s important to me for an artist to actually be talking about something that came from them as opposed to being manufactured in that way.

It’s gonna be fun, but at the same time, there’s an underlying message for people. Like I said, it’s important for the underdog to prevail at some point and reinforce faith in people. Music should move you. It shouldn’t just be fun. It’s not all about fun. Life is about ups and downs, so that’s what my music will have.

Kudos to her particularly on her response to the type of deal she is seeking. That said, with the industry being so ruthlessly cut-throat these days, there may come a time where it’ll need to be a case of taking what’s on offer and proving that she deserves better.

In any case, as appreciators of Ms. Thornton’s ability, we’re keen to see her establish herself on the solo tip. Here’s hoping all works out.

I hope she learns to bait her audience in, she often times over sings & that can wear an audience down. She can definitely sing & if she has a mean pen game- she’s gold…or here’s hoping- platinum.

    yes my fav pcd!

  3. Nic September 26, 2010

Best of luck to Melody. Hopefully she learns that as a solo artist, its best to play by the label’s rules, then break out on her own eventually. The music industry is toooooooooo specific right now, especially for females. Only the right look, the right type of musjc, the right marketing will equal success. It’s like the late 90s bubblegum pop all over again.

  4. zih September 26, 2010

She will be a damn flop. Please. she can sing but her voice is too annoying. and she feels she deserve more? WTH?

  5. GangsterA September 26, 2010

She speaks really well and sounds quite grounded with herself and her abilities. I’m also glad she’s being mature about her situations. Kudos to her indeed!! Best of luck!

  9. Ppl…….go away September 26, 2010

Some people need to commit a POST-ABORTION! For example,…………………….. you jackass.

On to topic, MT is my favorite former PCD. I look forward to her new project. She is very pretty and talented. The industry needs more talented ppl who don’t need to sleep with and/or use others (i.e. ride the CAMEL) to get over!

  10. English Babe* September 26, 2010

    LOOOOOOOOL @ PPL…………..GO AWAY.

You made me spill my coffee all over my laptop. what the hell is a post abortion?? lol!

yeah i like this girl and hope she does well.

  11. Aryo September 26, 2010

all of the dolls are doing their own stuff, but where is Ashley
if kimberly can sing, so does ashley, Why isnt she working on any albums??
    i love her song played!

  12. ADE September 26, 2010

She needs to get over herself and take what she can get. She can sing, she’s beautiful and a great artist overall but I just don’t think people are checking for her like that. She’s to Nicole what Kelly is to Beyonce…unfair, but hey, it is what it is.

  13. CRAMPED September 26, 2010

I dont think people are really checking for nicole either because all her singles flopped and the album never got released. Melody have a chance to show she was the only real deal in the PCD. I wish her well.

  14. Lewis92 September 26, 2010

Melody’s voice is nice, altough it’s annoying a bit. Whatever, I love her.
But Nicole is my fav, she’s gorgeous, really talented and s***. And Nic will achieve the most. Dancing with the stars and X-factor help her to know her more and more people. A lot of people will buy her album. I’m sure.

  15. ARTIST K September 26, 2010

    zzzzzzzzz….

  16. kekeluvsu September 26, 2010

    @ CRAMPED

So true. I get and tired of ppl saying Nicole this and and Nicole that. If she was all of that like some ppl think, then her album would have come out and she wouldn’t still need to ride PCD or be in that group if she was that great. When you have it, you have it. Obviously ppl aren’t looking at her solo wise and I personally couldn’t careless.

    @ LEWIS92

Just because you get more exposure on a freaking dance and singing show, doesn’t guarantee that you will sell records. Nicole has been on countless of things and she is still struggling along with the other PCD girls. So your point is null and void.

ANYWAY, hope Melody does make it. She has always been my favorite and I hope she gets everythiing she deserves.

  17. madison September 26, 2010

this chick is annoying as hell…..and her responses are sooooo shady, u can tell she is a major b**** trying to sound all intelligent…..everytime i hear her speak in any interview i wanna slap the s*** outta her.

  18. daseekah September 26, 2010

    I like melody

  19. Janey September 26, 2010

If Nicole’s cd had been a flop, she wouldn’ t still be recording for Interscope. It’s a very competitive business. Nicole is being very wise by doing a bunch of collaborations and other activities such as DWTS, Rent and X-Factor. If the other Dolls were better than Nicole, why weren’t they chosen to front the group?

  20. kekeluvsu September 26, 2010

    @JANEY

That was just dumb. It’s not about Nicole being better then the other chicks because anybody who knows music knows that Melody has far more range and vocal ability then Nicole. And like i stated before being on all those shows still hasn’t done s*** for Nicole. She is still struggling like the other PCD chicks. The only reason why she is still with interscope is because she’s kissing ass. Melody knows her worth and she knows what she can do to make herself and career better. It would be so funny if her solo stuff took off before Nicole’s. But I guess ppl would had on that too.

  21. Kyle September 27, 2010

I love Melody. I like what she said about what label she wants to be on and when she said, “It’s like why would I marry someone just because they have money? I also need to be loved. I need to be cherished.” If she keeps this attitude she’s gonna go far.

  22. Distances September 27, 2010

If Melody brings meaning and good sound to her songs, instead of just singing about bars and s**, I will buy her music and support her all the way.

I’m so sick of the crap that’s out today.

  23. Nathan September 27, 2010

@KEKELUVSU – The whole point is, if Nicole is “struggling” despite the massive exposure she’s had, then what chance in hell does Melody have??? If Nicole can’t get a hit then Melody really doesn’t stand a chance. the music business isn’t about who’s got the best vocal range. voice plays a part, but so does image, exposure, personal contacts/networking….all of which Nicole has the advantage over Melody!! Nicole has the look and she definitely has the voice, she’s more indemand since appearing on dancing with the stars and x factor, thus, she has more of a chance in succeeding with her next album. i’m sorry but the reality is, no1 cares for Melody. obviously you do, and melody will have her own little fanbase, but compared to Nicole she’s a nobody and probably always will be. I do really like her though, but your deluding yoursself if you think she will EVER be as big as or bigger than Nicole Scherzinger, nah, not gonna hapen mate. quote me in 2 years 🙂

  24. Nathan September 27, 2010

and Nicole isn’t “struggling”, she aint even released an album since appearing on Dancing With The Stars. So until she releases new music you aint really in a position to say that the show hasn’t “done s*** for her”. if indeed her album flops then you will be justified in saying that, but until she releases new music we won’t know how well the show has helped her!

even if she does flop, she can still venture into other things, poor Melody will always be a nobody, bless her

  25. the truth teller September 27, 2010

    B**** YOU BETTA HURRY UP!!!

  26. Robier September 27, 2010

    Bwaahaaaa yeah ok

  27. Matty D September 28, 2010

Oh mel, i’m gonna miss your vocal runs in songs like buttons and whatcha think about that! but i would rather hear just u! I’ll totally buy your record when it comes out!
