With his new album, ‘Passion, Pain & Pleasure’, now in stores, Trey Songz decided to carry his yodeling act to ‘106 & Park’. The sex peddler performed several tracks including ‘Can’t Be Friends’, ‘Neighbours Know My Name’ and more. Peep the mini concert below:
Four albums later and Songz still has not learned how to sing a song without going dramatically off-key. Maybe if he stopped trying to sound passionate by lacing every line with Scooby Doo-style vibrato he would be able to focus on how his voice matches the melody of the music.
However, it is highly unlikely that currently Songz cares about his skill as a vocalist. ‘Passion, Pain & Pleasure is set to debut in the top 5 of next week’s Billboard 200 with sales of 220-230k. Songz is living proof that sex sells in today’s music industry and that being innovative, original or even interested in artistic growth is not a major point on most people’s agendas.
Clearly Songz’s mission of providing the public with more generic and shallow material is finally working in his favour. He has found his niche on the charts as just another male artist who enjoys sexually objectifying the bodies of women in his lyrics; an empty shell of the artist was when he first debuted.
Let’s see if Songz will finally get pass gold status and if he will get another BET Award to add to his budding collection. At the end of the day he better get while the getting is good because shallow artists like him have an expiration date and the clock is ticking.

I disagree about his intonation. He’s actually in tune the majority of the time, but I must agree that his vibrato (which is natural feature of his voice) is some what off-putting. As that is more of feature of genetics than technique, there is little that he can do about it.

With all of the hits, hype and promo that Trey had with his last album he barely went platinum, which happened thru shipments. Still platinum. But he is not as big as he thinks he is. Treys vocal ability is very limited. He can’t really sing. He just growls and yodels thru his notes. Theres no power, harmony or depth to his voice. His album sales this time around are really good. 220 to 230k. Thats good. As much is people try to downplay album sales, even tho they have declined quite a bit they are still very important, or else people would’nt be talking about platinum plaques and all of that.
I think this album will go platinum perhaps 2x platinum because of all of the momentum, and and hype and success on radio. He’s doing well right now. His last album struggled to go platinum. He needs to stay humble.
200K is good for Trey on a first week. I knew he would do around that with all the promotional techniques he took advantage of.
Everybody’s career doesn’t jump out fast like that. Some peopel progress slowly and y is that a bad thing? Just proves persistence and hard work pays off. Trey’s career is moving in an upward direction. Whether his last cd went plat or not. I felt he progressed and thats ok.
Trey can sing, sometimes he overdoes it but he can sing.
He will not get to number1 with Lincoln Park whom has had almost no promotion besides the Vma’s. They are expected to be number1. But Trey has done very well for himself.
Yall are over exaggerating about this guys vocals, I know Hes no R.Kelly, Maxwell or Usher or even Marques Houston but hes better than a lot of his male peers like Chris brown, Omarion etc & probably Mario & Neyo as well. The only reason i got into Trey at all (& I am FAR From a Groupie btw) is when BET aired his little (concert-set) Show as I was hearing it in the background as i slept, some of his music is good & hes a really good vocalist & has a nice voice. He sounded good on 106 except for “Can’t Be Friends”. He DID NOT sound good singing that song and I like Trey. He has a nice voice, but he has a vocal range and I get mad when he goes out of that range. Those high notes make me cringe. Other than that, good performance.

2: A Platinum selling album. [His second album]

Ready has sold 800k so has potential to go platinum and with estimated 1st week sales of 230k, im sure passion, pain and pleasure will also go platinum!

If you look at old posts from thatgrapejuice Sam is always saying how talented and underrated Trey is. Trey Songz does know how to sing but for some reason it doesn’t show in these past two albums. Trey used to make real R&B and I was a really big fan of his when he first came out. I am longer a fan but I know he has talent, he just chose to sell out and hide the talent he has.
