Jason Derulo Performs On ‘Dancing With The Stars’ (A Must-See)

Published: Wednesday 20th Oct 2010 by Sam

Jason Derulo‘s undeniably strong promotional train pulled into the Dancing With The Stars studio last night. There the 20 year old hit the stage to perform his hit ‘In My Head’.

Peep his performance after the jump…

Hot sizzling mess.

Yet again, Derulo served up a text-book example of simply doing too much. Despite being at a stage in his career where he should be honing the basics (see: vocals, stage presence, connection with audience); he instead seems intent on pushing this ‘showstopper’ angle – yet is falling oh-so flat while doing so. From the frog-like vocals, to complete lack of breath-control, to the painfully embarrassing Michael Jackson impersonation, it’s just all too much.

In all fairness to Derulo, he gets an ‘A’ for effort; for he shouldn’t be knocked for having the desire to be a force. However, it needs to be understood that the MJ’s, Usher‘s and co  really took time to perfect their craft – essentially growing into the performers they are. Derulo, on the other hand, seems to want to be that all-rounder straight out of the gate, despite not possessing anywhere near the required ability at this point. As the age-old adage goes: “what good is it being a jack of all trades, yet a master of nothing?”. This being something Jason may want to consider…

He needs to go to the Britney Spears Academy for Lip-Syncing or the House of Dereon Institute of Pre-recorded Vocals. Some parts should have been lipped and some parts should have been live. SMH

He’s trying to fill that void that Chris Brown, Usher and JT left

He did his best so I can’t be mad at him

But he has to try harder to push this album to platinum

And with performances like this…its going to be a long road.

  2. vegasgirl October 20, 2010

The problem is that he is experiencing his “growing pains” on national T.V. Most people that watch this will think he did good unless they actually are trying to understand what he is saying. I am not a Derulo fan but recognize that he has talent. He has to somehow change how he approaches singing his songs live, his vocal style is very choppy and makes him seem like he is out of breath when I don’t think he is. If I was on the fence about liking him as a performer NONE of the performances he has done so far have convinced me even though this is better than the last one that was posted. But I am biased because I don’t like him so….

  3. LondonDiva October 20, 2010

I thank GOD he calls out his name at the beginning of pretty much every track he does “Jason Deruuuuuuulo”

….gives me ample time to change the radio station pronto!

  4. Gucci October 20, 2010

People must stop comparing Jason to usher, jt, mj and chris brown. The guy can dance and sing there’s no doubt about that. Why wasn’t it said that omarion is copying mj or usher, or that chris was copying mj huh? There will always be haters out there. Chris had his chance and too bad it ended early but hopefully he’ll get back up and do what he does best. Usher on the other hand has lost his touch when it comes to dancing. Look at OMG and DJ’s got us falling inlove videos. Whereas with Jason, he brings the funkyness and energetic feel to life, and you can really relate to his music. Whenever I’m feeling down I literally play Jason’s album and I feel a lot better. Go Jason and keep rocking cuz most of us do enjoy your music and entertainment.

  7. UGh October 20, 2010

lol i just heard a clip of him on the radio from last night. The hosts were not impressed. One of them said he was trying to this MJ thing but it wasn’t working…..lmao
the other one was like ” i really wanted him to do better”

  8. GangsterA October 20, 2010

i like him the peformance isnt bad but not great also but he have talent he just need to work a lil harder and he will be fine i saw him at gaga tour and he was great

  9. MRB October 20, 2010

Im sorry but he just needs to throw in the towel! I just dont see it for him!!!!!!

  10. elleuk October 20, 2010

    LMAO @ londondiva.
bless his cotton socks, i just don’t think he has that star quality to become great.
there is a somthing very contrived and extremly forced about his image.
like i can imagine usher or chris brown singing in my head, and it becomming a hit, but jason nahhh. talent and star quality are two different things.
some people are great at writing hit songs, but cannot make themselves a hit.

  11. Corey October 20, 2010

I’d hit…but that’s it lol. Something about his face is a little off to me. I don’t like his music and his performances make me want to vomit. He can dance but he does too much.

  12. CC October 20, 2010

Eww his vocals are horrible…his voice sounds so strange live, its really whiny and nasal. I couldnt even make it to the end of the performance, i had to press stop. NEXT!

  13. Paulann7326 October 20, 2010

    @LondonDiva
I have to co-sign on that!
And really, if you’re all that, do you really need to remind people who you are every song?

I can’t knock his grind but I have to agree with Sam on this one, he should be working on HONING his craft. He’s not a natural but singing lessons & working on the choreography could make him almost good.

  14. LondonDiva October 20, 2010

@Paulann7326 they went as far on Capital Radio 2 nights ago to make fun of him doing that. Played his new song and low and behold in the beginning “Jason Deruuuuuuulo”

I’m not buying his supposed talent/image.

As long as there is Usher, Chris Brown, Justin Timberlake making music, mixtapes, collaborating on other people’s tracks I have NO NEED to listen to this dude’s music. He brings nothing new or exciting to the table.

  15. PLAIN AND SIMPLE October 20, 2010

OMG!!! He was just HORRIBLE. His singing was off as well as his dancing.

  16. UMMM…………. October 20, 2010

Why does he always announce himself before every performance? Does he think we have forgotten him from one awful performance to the next? This was a hot mess as usual! His breathy singing and well scripted but poorly executed performances are just tiresome!

    UMMM………….WHATEVER Jason “DE HELL NO”!

  17. Kris J October 20, 2010

he sucks live. he has trouble singing and dancing at the same time. he sang georgia on my mind last night too and did a good job . i hope he gets better because i like his singles

  18. Bridget October 20, 2010

I thought he was entertaining – I know his voice doesn’t sound perfect, but it also at least it sounds real.

  19. UMMM…………. October 20, 2010

    PAGING CHRIS BROWN……USHER…….NE-YO…..HELL, anyone?

    “Hot sizzling mess”…..I love TGJ…..LOL 🙂

  20. Savoy October 20, 2010

I cut it off when he started going into falsetto. I couldn’t take it any longer…

MY main question is where does he get these clothes from? That tight pleather jacket would get rejected from TJMaxx, Burlington Coat Factory, AND Rainbow for being so fugly.

Maybe through choosing better clothing and loosening up what he wears, he can not only quit making my eyes burn but (maybe) perform with better vocal support. Just a suggestion.

  21. Heaven October 20, 2010

Pfft, rabid dogs even have fans. It’s no telling why folks like what they like but to say this chile measures up to past or present entertainers is pure unadulterated b*******.

  22. RosaRubbel October 20, 2010

    I’m Speechless *Ciara voice.
A HOT A$$ MESS³. Enough said.

  23. Mr.Q October 20, 2010

I thought this was his best performance yet. not too much…good job!

  24. TeAM WeeZY October 20, 2010

OMG! DEAD @ London Diva! That s*** had me ROLLING! LMAO!

  25. Robier October 20, 2010

SHE IS TRAGIC. THE BIZ NEEDS TRAINING LIKE BACK IN THE DAY BUT ITS NOT NECESSARY BECAUSE THIS GENERATION ACCEPTS ANYTHING BUT THIS IS BELOW MEDIOCRE

  26. Wendy October 20, 2010

OMG !!! what a HOT mess!!!!!!!!! Go back to where you came from ! lol. You should be no where near a mic. #justsayin

  27. That FLOP Juice October 20, 2010

    tragic

  28. Nothing But My Opinion October 20, 2010

    it was decent..

  29. virgo October 20, 2010

Ok. so I’m not a Jason derulo fan but i don’t think this was that bad. He did seem out of breath but he still sang and didn’t let the back track take over. as far as him “doing too much”, what was he supposed to do? this is dancing with the stars. He has that huge stage to take advantage of. if you look at people who perform here, they use the area for a big performance. Lady gaga, who was on her first album, as he is, performed on here and used the area. Yeah she did a good job, but nobody said she was trying to be legendary before her time. I think you’re hating on him with this one. i found it entertaining. not show stopping, but entertaining.

  30. VA STAND UP!! October 20, 2010

    @Lonfondiva: Lol & co-sign!

‘Hot sizzling mess’ indeed! Which is just what I have come to expect from him. Its like he is just incapable of giving a good performance. I almost feel bad for him because you can tell he tries so hard, but fails everytime. Nothing about him looks or sounds natural. He always looks like he is just imitating what he saw someone else do, from his style to his stiff ass dance moves.

Maybe he is just better off behind the scenes writing for others. He just lacks the ‘it’ factor…vocal ability…dance ability..s** appeal..etc.

This was bad, but nothing can top his performance on Regis & Kelly! That was beyond atrocious!

  31. Jmoore October 20, 2010

I thought that was kinda hot!

  32. HATIN IS FOR SUCKAS October 20, 2010

That was a HOT STANKING MESS try again Mr. Derulo

  33. harvey October 21, 2010

SAM,where’s the second video he really does better at balleds than uptempo tracks his voice just aint not fit to do those type of songs.

  34. Brandy 4ever October 21, 2010

& this guy is going on Tour ALLLLL BUY HIMSELF???? that should be a joy……

  35. Lala October 21, 2010

  36. Kahari October 21, 2010

Although I am not a major, supportive fan of Jason Derülo, I do enjoy watching him perform the same song that’s been in rotation on radio for the past 9 months (since its release back in December 2009). Jason came at a time in the music industry when we all lost hope for Chris Brown because of “the incident.” He has the right amount of appeal to be successful: squeaky clean image, Hip-Hop techno poppy flavored tracks, and smooth dancing skills. One thing I don’t understand is, why is he constantly performing “In My Head” when he has 4 other Top Ten hits. SMH!

@Vegasgirl: I agree with you on his ability to deliver a solid vocal performance. Whenever he sings, it’s very messy; like he’s trying to over-sing…all the runs are so unnecessary. Though I do believe he is a great dancer, he focuses more so on the choreography hence, the singing aspect of the performance flops. He still has time to get it together, remember, we’re a generation that focuses more on the “wow” factor moreover than anything else. Like at Britney, she can’t hum a note live for s***, but people pay ’till their bottom dollar to see her visual concepts during a live performance. Even Usher lip-syncs, only because he “paid his dues.” So, he can only get better in time! 🙂

  37. ERIC October 21, 2010

emmm… i wud have been good if he had acctually sung a bit… the chorus was a backing track all the way and he was just humming, the dancig was just a dance… the kid can’t even hit the final note!
he should be embarassed of how little his stage confidence is!
yet i like his music but he should learn to give decent performances, starting by singing classes and being more creative with his dance moves, it won’t work to promoting yourself everywhere if you don’t do it right!

  38. okayokayok October 21, 2010

In my Head was awful..but he did well with Georgia On My Mind…maybe he can sing, just not his own songs? LOL

  39. dwyane October 21, 2010

EHH got nothing on CHRIS BROWN

  40. Dave October 21, 2010

Maybe it’s me, but that wasn’t all that bad . You really did over-exaggerate it. That’s just how his vocals are. They weren’t all that, but i’m def not about to rip out my ear drums or canal. He did ok, that’s all.

  41. truth serum October 21, 2010

I have a problem listening to anyone who has a lisp over the age of 5, and likewise looks as if he wears more make up than most women.

  42. Liah October 21, 2010

I’m ROFL at LondonDiva’s comment. I didn’t even bother to watch the performance.

  43. Trail October 22, 2010

The question should be is ‘What the f*** is he wearing”. Can this dudes wearing skinny jeans hit die please?

  44. sunnyforever October 22, 2010

I must be a novice…..NOT….I liked it. COME ON…..been to any concerts lately……on fast upbeat tunes can you really understand every word? NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! Especially if the voice is war torn from touring.

Choreography was top notched and his singing was passable enough to buy vowels.

At this stage in his career any publicity is good.

  45. Rod October 22, 2010

So…I HATED ABSOLUTELY HATED the performance of his song. It was terrible as usual. But was very surprised that Georgia was done pretty well. It shows that he has some vocal strength it needs crafting but with a good vocal coach he could end up a good balladeer. Or at least as good as Usher one day. He is handsome as well tho

  46. Rod October 22, 2010

    LMAO @ Brandy4ever….true!!! SO true!
