Trey Songz Slams Critics In New Interview

Published: Tuesday 12th Oct 2010 by Trent

In a recent interview with Real Talk NY, the abrasively egotistical Trey Songz slammed the critics who challenge his sexual approach to music. Check out what the never-platinum singer had to say about the issue as well as the success of his new album below:

That’s right Songz – the critics don’t live it. However, that doesn’t mean that we can’t understand the nonsense that you have been making. Think about this: Clive Davis is not a singer yet he was brilliant enough to critique Whitney Houston’s song choices and guide her toward legend status.

The fact is that the critics help to keep artists grounded and focused on improving their craft. In today’s industry, sales aren’t always reflective of the quality of the material (see: Rihanna) and if you’re hoping to have staying power in this business then you need to be a more well-rounded act. In your own words: critique that.

I tell ya some people get a little fame & wanna act like they’ve been in the game for decades. Girl Bye!

  4. That Cranberry Sauce October 12, 2010

His p**** stay leaking and it ain’t cute.

  5. AuntieJackie October 12, 2010

I used to like Trey. His personality turns me off now.

  6. TEAM KELLY (ROWLAND) October 12, 2010

@CHILE PLEASE, B**** YOU SO DAMN SILLY! LMFAO!!!! OMG! THIS WAS HILARIOUS!

  7. True Blue October 12, 2010

Trey has a point about the critics, and Trent has a point as well. Yes, the whole point of critics is that they critique— nowhere does it say in the job description that they must praise every artist’s work if they aren’t feeling it. However, critics do tend to think too highly of themselves, and they assume that their opinion is THE definitive word. To be honest, their opinions are no more valid than that of the average consumer who actually buys the product. Music is purely subjective, you can’t prove that someone’s album is good or terrible. And Lord knows some critics seem to hold personal vendettas against certain artists (very rarely is it justified), so they abuse their position as critics to put down everything an artist does in hopes of getting the public to dislike them as well. Too bad that they’ve yet to learn that this tactic always backfires.

    @Trent —

    …That GIF: You is stuuupid…!! ; – 9 (wink)

Oh! I’ll be giving y’all the “what-Trey-sold-this-week update,” once the final sales figures are in!

    X,Y,”and Z” — OUT…!!

  9. True Blue October 12, 2010

That being said, Trey is a little cocky. He thinks Linkin Park is mad that they’ve just barely outsold him? Sorry Trey, but some artists don’t live for album sales. Some are truly in it for the music. #Noshade.

  10. Keesha October 12, 2010

    I couldn’t watch the video. 🙁 I don’t really like Trey as much as I used to, I don’t know… *shrugs shoulders*

  11. Keesha October 12, 2010

I found out that Chris Brown wrote “Flatline” off of Trey’s PPP album. I like that song (only because Chris wrote it) and Chris is an amazing writer.

  12. LEEK October 12, 2010

Honestly, Songz hasn’t said anything different from what other singers/songwriters, or athletes have said about critics. There’s alot that goes on behind the scenes what fans and journalists don’t see.

  13. Cedric October 12, 2010

Trey is a jerk suffering from an inflated ego. His last album ‘Ready’ although it’s sold over 700k has yet to go platinum. Yep , he’s on a role now but stimulating air /imaginary s** on stage is gimmicky and won’t last for long. It’s only a matter of time before that grows old and it’s apparent that he has no stage presence.

He ought to learn a thing from Chris Breezy on how to perform. Queque’s R. Kelly, ‘When a Woman Loves’

  14. theman October 12, 2010

Who the hell does Trey Songz think he is, when he receives a multiplatinum album, then he could possibly start talking. The way this dude talks you’d think he has a 5 to 10x platinum album, nowhere near close.Trey is not as big as he thinks he is. He has allowed the hype to get to his head. He was much cooler when people really did’nt know him. His first and 2nd week numbers were pretty good for his new album, but he’s not doing anything special. Linkin Park blows Trey out of the window. They would have sold way more than that if they had better promotion, and a bigger selling single, of anything that just lets you know how established they are. I know that Trey did extremely well especially for an r&b artist, but he also had so much going his way.

Trey can barely sing, all of his singing sounds like moaning, grunting yodeling. He gets to defensive when anyone says something that he does’nt agree with. He had better check himself because people can and will get over him. You have 1 barely platinum if that. You are nowhere near that great to act that way.

  15. theman October 12, 2010

I mean’t 1 barely platinum album, not to mention i think he’s the 1 pissed because Linkin Park sold a 1,000 more units than him lol. That must hurt his ego. Lol He wanted that #1 spot so bad.

  16. the kiddz October 12, 2010

    You better work! Lol!

I feel like Trey Songz is regressing instead of progressing. His first album was by far his best, now it seems like he lost sense of his musical approach when he got off his hair. And he’s so damn cocky. It’s one thing to be confident in your work, but DAMN he’s just so full of himself. ugh. Cute and humble, sir.

  17. ~Team Weezy~ October 12, 2010

“To be honest, their opinions are no more valid than that of the average consumer who actually buys the product.”

EXACTLY! People always jump up and down about something being ‘critically acclaimed’ when they are no more credible than the average consumer. The only difference is they have a way to publicly display their opinions about the music they here. THAT’S IT! Nothing more. I don’t need a critic to tell me if a song or album is good to me, or what type/style of music I’m listening to. Their just as credible as the people who post on blogs.

Anyway, I actually like some of Trey’s music, but this dude continually pisses me off in every one of his interviews. He acts like he’s on Usher’s level of success, Eric Benet/D’Angelo/Musiq

  18. ~Team Weezy~ October 12, 2010

Sorry comment submitted before I was done!

Anyway, He acts like he’s on Usher’s level of success, or Eric Benet/D’Angelo/Musiq level of music, or Tyrese level of voice. BOY PLEASE!

  19. FUTURESTARdelux October 12, 2010

    TREY IS SO GAY…

  20. STRAX October 12, 2010

@ I think Trey is taking this ego too far, like some of his tracks, however he is no Usher, Joe, R Kelly etc etc. Even Chris Brown! LOL!

When people get defensive, 9 times out of 10 they know the people who are critical of them have a valid point and can can hurt someone like Trey who thinks he is the MAIN MAN OF R&B…

I can tell you he most certainly is not covering himself in glory, and even die hard Trey fans are starting to get pissed off.

This dude needs normalizing! He needs someone big in the game to tell him to act more humble…

Don’t think anyone can argue, with all this criticism about his attitude coming from all angles, there must be some truth to it, it cannot be all hating.

Think Trent has a point, however I do sense an underlying resentment for Trey.

Get a grip Trey, you are not a household name!!!

  21. Shelly October 12, 2010

    @MRB Ready sold almost 800K
@Keesha “Flatline” is not on PPP and I doubt Chris wrote that song for him when he’s trying to get his own career back on track.

Maybe instead of taking everything he says and turning it into “he’s arrogant” you should LISTEN to what he is saying. All he’s saying is he doesn’t live his life for critics nor should he. Everyone has critics, even the most talented person. That doesn’t mean they know what they’re talking about nor does it make them right! Regardless of what the “critics” say Trey is winning right now and even if all he does is talk about s**, somebody likes it…

  22. Janie’s Got A Gun October 12, 2010

If it wasn’t for chris beating that goat grammy night trey wouldn’t have his semi success that he’s having right now.

I seriously think trey only got a lil popular cus chris was being blackballed in the industry/media and usher was dealing with his messy marriage and etc.

Trey just screams gay to me, he’s not cute and he’s horrible live! *see prince tribute @ EBT awards & also see Prince’s “bish pls” stank face.

Chris is back so trey you can go back to selling 100k and less on an album 🙂

  23. MISHKA October 12, 2010

Okay, he didn’t say something you wouldn’t have said yourself TGJ.

I know you like to stir things up here but this blow is uncalled ridiculous.

  24. MISHKA October 12, 2010

    AND ridiculous, I meant.

  25. Terry October 12, 2010

I know Trey isn’t preaching about being true to yourself and live for yourself, Girl pull that pin out of your bun and let it blow in the wind for once. I’m so sick of these gay males in the industry playing straight, people can see you and just the fact that you get defensive all the time lets us know that you’re a little sensitive boo boo. My thing is Trey’s voice is not all that appealing to me, please sit your ass all the way down….”They don’t live it, I’m winning”, sounds like a brat to me..

  26. STRAX October 12, 2010

    @MISHKA

Agree that the initial thoughts from Trent are overly harsh in some ways….

It does stir things up and tends to get all the hater and lovers of Trey battling it out and it takes away from what the discussion is really about.

Is Trey Songz truly talented and will have a career at this level in 10 years?
Replicating the likes if Usher? I do not think so… No hating at all

  27. Crack is wack October 12, 2010

Trent for someone who is so physically attractive you radiate so much negativity. I hope someone loves you for you. #just saying

    #prollysmallnoassloser

  28. Crack is wack October 12, 2010

And Trent who died and made you king… I’m sure that trey Songz is happy t have a carreer at all. He can invest wisely while he is successful and still make a living out of it.

Not everyone wants to be Mariah ‘should have quit when i was a head’ Carey

  29. Terry October 12, 2010

…..and for those of you that always try to get at Trent and Sam why don’t you all visit blogs where they keep it politically correct. Keep TGJ for the people who want to read about the REAL!!!

  30. Waddie G. October 12, 2010

Trey sounds so robotic and angry.

    Trey, girl, boom!

  31. Crack is wack October 12, 2010

I agree REAL IMMATURE and dumbass so it suits you above ^^^^^

  32. Terry October 12, 2010

You can call it immature if you want but if it quacks like a duck…….you know the rest. It’s like going to Egypt and complaining that its too hot, clearly Trent and Sam speaks their mind on anything, people know this yet people still come on this site to argue and complain about how they’re running their blog, now make sense out of that for me please?

  33. Shelly October 12, 2010

Let me be a critic for a second. Sam and Trent I think you guys are spiteful haters and your blog sucks because all you do is post hateful things about the artist you don’t like. We as an urban community LOVE to tear people down instead of bringing them up smh! No matter what Trey does you will never be happy for him because your so busy trying to figure out what he hasn’t accomplished. With that being said your not going to change your attitude or site just because I (who am irrelevant to you) doesn’t like it. Just like Trey (who to him you are irrelevant) is not going to change his music. He makes his music for him and the people who love him, just like you hate and blog for the people who love you guys and what you do. Not everyone is going to agree with you but that doesn’t mean you should start living your life for other people and what they think.

  34. Bodiddy October 12, 2010

He’s so cocky and has a p*** poor attitude. It doesn’t matter if it was by 10 they where number one… Sure don’t mind kissing up to Hova… He’s not the first artist to have billboard with his picture or do a Kodax commercial. There have been plenty artist that have done that. Let’s try to win that platinum status , Trey has been over five years, it’s now or never. Doing 32 page spread’s mean’s nothing if you aren’t selling…. His team so sure that this new cd would be the one, yet it’s slowing down in sales…. Critics may not live it… but they sure influnence some people, not all. I really liked him at one time, but I’m really starting to be irriated every time I hear his voice. Maybe that opening act for Jay-Z has gone through his head. I say that people where trying so hard to replace that other boy… that they really have him believing that he the s*** ….. That other boy is on the rise again, nominate along with Mr. Songz for a AMA… Head lining a MJ tribute you in Puerto Rico , at a 18,000 seating arena… 3 songs in rotation on the radio… not bad for someone who had been written off… Mr. Songz you better humble yourself, because that cockiness won’t last in the industry, here today, gone today!

  35. Shelly October 12, 2010

    “Doing 32 page spread’s mean’s nothing if you aren’t selling…. ”
Uhhh obviously selling records aren’t everything if he is able to have a 32 page spread, Kodak commercials, Rocawear campaign, Billboard, a BET award, tour with Jay-Z, headlining (and selling out every show) his own tour, and going on tour with Usher. Smh! You people can never be happy for someone.

  36. oao October 12, 2010

This blog sucks. Why so much hate??

  37. Soulful Roses October 12, 2010

He use to be a breath of fresh air, GOSH!, I use to love him. But his attitude has turned me all the way off.

  38. T-MARIE October 12, 2010

He irks the s*** out of me, the more and more he continues to let his EGO lead his way. SMDH!! Good luck with that longevity, because the true LEGENDS he seeks to be, are humble, and a lot more talented than grindin and licking air on stage.

  39. SoPRETTEE1908 October 12, 2010

i actually like his music and i always have liked it. and no one black balled CB he chose his own fate on that faithful night no shade though… i think try is very talented vocalist and song writer i respect his work. #respect.

  40. truepeace October 12, 2010

Great interview! I don’t think Trey is any more cocky than most men in the industry. The blogosphere is based on negativity so I agree with him. Focus on what you want and make it happen. I think the content of R & B and hip-hop music has been hypersexual for a while now. I don’t see where his content is any worse than the the other popular R & B acts. I guess we are willing to excuse the cocky and whiny behavior of Kanye West purely on his album sales. This is his time, let him enjoy it in this short lived world of celebrity.

  41. isn’t it ironic? October 12, 2010

Trey will remain cocky even if it kills his career. He’s already pissed off big names like R.Kelly & Prince with his hatchet job “tributes” and remakes of their music. How he gonna make a diss record for Kellz while singing his songs on tour (whack ass rendition of Use To Me Spending, Trapped In The Closet). Sorry Trey, you already run your mouth too much and you act like a p**** (the beef with Kellz was a PR stunt, don’t front!) Humble pie is something Trey needs to eat. No one likes arrogance for long.

  42. Crack is wack October 12, 2010

FYI … GAY should not be used as a derogatory term especially not on this site given that the owners are GAY ( or at least TRENT …this I know for sure ** not telling how I know***)

  43. DENIM October 12, 2010

LIKE HE SAID HE’S WINNING. TRUTH OF MATTER HE HAS MORE FANS THAN U HAVE BLOGGERS LOL. GAY, STR8, NON TALENTED, TALENTED, CUTE , UGLY EITHER WAY U STILL ON HIS NUTS CUZ U STILL POST ABOUT HIM LOL YOU GUYS ARE NUTS!

  44. Misty October 12, 2010

Oh no ma’am! Trent has become such a divo. Glad he ain’t get MY money, lmao! This is why I refuse to put money in the pockets of cocky artists, and I support the underdogs and TALENTED artists. Music is just taking a turn for the worst. I’m glad this s** thing isn’t helping Trey as much as it WOULD be if he focused heavily on crafting the art of his VOICE and not his body!

Where is Kevin Liles and his mama to set his ass straight? He is not that big in the game to have yes men around him–instead adults need to help keep him GROUNDED

“I don’t know what to expect for 2011. Every time I set goals for myself, i seem to SURPASS them…” According to…?
    Hmmm #BYE

  45. Misty October 12, 2010

And for whoever thinks his deal with Rocawear is sooo huge…who’s wearing Rocawear??? #NOSHADE
Also Jay will discard them, like he did all the other people he USED in his campaigns and then DUMPED. Trey will join that list, and unfortunately Melanie Fiona.

  46. lamont October 12, 2010

WOW….I LIKE TREY SONGZ MUSIC…DONT GET ME WRONG!! BUT, HE IS A LITTLE TO COCKY, ARROGANT & STUCK ON HIM SELF!!!

  47. Lisa October 12, 2010

@Misty Who do you model for? Oh, Ok. #SitYoAssDown! Rocawear may not be huge but that check is gonna be huge and having a billboard for it in Times Square is huge!

  48. Misty October 12, 2010

    @Lisa

I dont have to model to know Rocawear aint on the level or class of Kenneth Cole, where Jay has actually said he’s trying to be on lmao! In fact Baby Phat and Apple Bottom is even higher lolol. I’m glad I got u pressed boo. And keep in mind: MONEY runs out! But CHARACTER is forever boo! He may wanna check his ‘tude NOW before its too late! Stans should tell his ass the truth

  49. Christopher October 13, 2010

Everyone always hating on Trey. Maybe he’s career will continue to progress, maybe it won’t. But, for now, he’s riding high on the R&B tip so let him be.

  50. UMMM………… October 13, 2010

    *DEAD AT THE GIF…..LOL….OMG……LOL 🙂

Oh please Trey spare me the dramatics. We all know why anyone knows your name! The “powers that be” decided to pull you up out of the abyss, while also torturing us with the likes of Jason “Da HELL NO”, Jay Sean, Justine Babble, etc , in an attempt to piece together an alternative to the young PRINCE…LOL. I guess the jokes on them!

    p.s….(SHADE)….I’d rather wear Calvin Klien!

  51. X,Y,”and Z” October 13, 2010

K, the final numbers are in for this week’s CD sales. Trey Songz sold, this week, 32,901 a -21% decrease from last week’s tally. Here are the rough numbers (so far):

    244,000 – 1st Week
    68,319 – 2nd Week -72% decrease
    45,774 – 3rd Week – 33% decrease
    32,901 – 4th Week – 21% decrease
    —————————————————-
390,901 (in total) Here’s the link, have a look: hitsdailydouble.com/sales/salescht.cgi

So, if “trends hold,” it’ll be “tough-sledding” for Trey Songz to “break-outta-the-400K doldrums,” in order to get to that “promised land: 500K(or higher, 1-Million: Platinum Glory)”

Barry Weiss needs to get that “Deuces” remix video done-ALREADY!! After 8-weeks atop the hitsdailydouble spin-chart, it’s slowing down and is now #2! Once that video is released, it’ll renew “Deuces-buzz…!!” If y’all checked the Urban Blogs, y’all would see that it “drew lots of talk!” …Kanye’s part was…”controversial…!!”

@Barry Weiss/Jive folks — You guys, over at Jive, let “The Takers Buzz” go to waste; let’s see if you squander THIS opportunity….!!!!
…BTW, ‘Takers’ has now, grossed domestic: $56.8-Million; and for Foreign Screens: $1.62-Million(U.K./Ireland/Malta, since Oct 10th. And it only had “greater-London screens”, NOT U.K. wide-screens). It’ll be shown in Latin America(Brasil) early next month…!! Here’s the link, have a look: boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=main&id=bonedeep.htm

    X,Y,”and Z” — OUT…!!!

  52. UMMM………… October 13, 2010

Is he actually bragging about being Camel Toe’s opening act? This man is 4 CD’s in the game complete with more features then Rihonald McDonald and Lil Kim *cough* I mean Nicki Manij combined! WOW…….just WOW!

He values his conversations with the lead puppet of the Illuminati music industry takeover? WOW…….just WOW!

  53. theman October 13, 2010

Rocawear < lol. Surpassing What Trey ? Really ? Lets see you have a barely Platinum first album, still good tho, did'nt get the #1 album by about a thousand or so copies. I think that there pissed him off. The industry especially Trey's team and the Urban demographic has really pumped this dude up. He had better calm down. That arrogance could be the demise of his career.

  54. tiff October 13, 2010

Stray Thogz needs to have several seats!

  55. Lisa October 13, 2010

@Misty Really tho? Somebody must like his attitude because his star is just getting brighter by the day, as he said in the interview. His “attitude” is him, either you hate it or you love it. His “attitude” used to be much worse before he got hot, so the fame or success doesn’t make him act a certain way if anything he’s become more humble with all his success. How he’s portrayed in the media and what on lookers say doesn’t mean s*** because his real fans know what’s real, and Trey is a sweetheart. I’ve met him a couple times and he’s such a nice and humble person. And the point of the “Who do you model for” comment wasn’t about what brands you know are better, duh we know they’re bigger, it was to say he’s doing something so why are you knocking him? I bet he will bring Rocawear’s sells up!

  56. UMMM………… October 13, 2010

    @TEAM WEEZY 100% Co-sign!

The “critics” are a damn trip! With the amount of money that now exchanges hands to ensure the media support of an artist, no one can really be sure if what the critics are saying about a song or CD is even valid! IMO

  57. Alexander October 13, 2010

Flopped hard and will continue so! Baa Goat man baaa

  58. bladerunnin October 13, 2010

This dude is way too arrogant, he talks like he sold millions like Usher. I really used to like Trey Songz and was routing for him to do well, but he lost me when he diss R Kelly for no reason. How you going to jack Kellz style and call yourself an artist?

  59. Robier October 13, 2010

Whatever!!!!! u ain’t sold no damn records fool. ur numbers are laughable

  60. isha October 13, 2010

FIRST THINGS FIRST TREY U ARE SO FINE BUT BOO U AND YOU S** MUSIC NEEDS 2 CALM DOWN A LITTLE BIT TRY SOMETHING NEW LIKE CME OUT WIT A DANCE OR RAP LOVE YA

  61. Jmoore October 13, 2010

He is a mess. So over rated!

  62. dion-ish October 13, 2010

    HILARIOUS.

Trent and Sam are a COMPLETE mess.

Trey has a point regarding critics…ACTUAL Critics not Buffoons and Jokes like those two.

And um Who the F** are you to say Rihanna doesn’t have Quality music yet turn around and praise certain artist WHICH she has more quality than?! Excuse me but Being that Rated R wasn’t really a commercial album and YET Still did as good as it did speaks alone. Like trey said…They will continue to win, while your site will continue to fail because in 25yrs well be saying That Grape Juice What?!

  63. Kio October 13, 2010

Can’t give a n**** a bone for shitIII Trey is played out, only the black demographic knows your name, plus you have not one drop of talent to be stucking your chest out play boy!!

  64. Mrsjones October 13, 2010

Ok and what was wrong with what he said about the critics? nuthin, yall just mad cuz he s*** as s*** thats all

  65. DENIM October 13, 2010

ARROGANT & COCKY WHERE????? WTF DID I MISS? HE APPROACHED THE QUESTION AS ANY OTHER “HUMAN” BEING WOULD DO WHEN YOUR TALKING ABOUT THEIR WORK. IS LIL WAYNE COCKY AND ARROGANT WHEN HE FLAT OUT SAYS DONT WORRY ABOUT WHATS IN MY CUP. ITS IN “MY” CUP! NO HE’S JUST SPEAKING HOW HE FEELS. AT THE END OF THE DAY HIS ENDORSEMENTS (WEITHER THEIR ROCA WEAR OR KMART) HE CAN LIVE OFF THE FOR YEARS WHILE YOUR STILL BLOGGING AND HATING ON HIM. WHILE HES TOURING WITH OR FOR USHER OR RONALD MCDONALD YOU’LL STILL BE BLOGGING AND HATING AND HE STILL WONT TOUCH ANY MONEY FROM HIS ALBUM SALES. LOL. U GUYS NEED TO STOP IT. TREY AND CHRIS ARE 2 DIFFERENT ARTIST U REALLY NEED TO STOP THE COMPARISON. ITS A SPOT FOR THEM ALL AND THE KEY TO SURVIVING IS KNOWKING WHEN ITS YOUR TIME.

  66. STRAX October 13, 2010

TREY IS GETTING NO WHERE NEAR PLATINUM STATUS…

ATLANTIC HAVE SPENT A MONUMENTAL BUDGET ON PROMOTION OF PPP AND IT HAS NOT REALLY PAID OFF, INTERNALLY, THEY MUST HAVE EXPECTED MORE, THATS THE REASON WHY TREY IS PIGGY BACKING ANOTHER TOUR BECAUSE THE SMALL VENUES DID NOT EQUATE TO SALES GROWTH/PROFIT FOR ATLANTIC.

IT CANNOT BE GOOD BUSINESS, THE FACT THAT R KELLY’S UNTITLED DID NOT HAVE THIS MACHINE BY IT AND SOLD 300,000 SAYS IT ALL AND TREY WAS DISSING HIM HARD

R KELLY HAS MULTI-PLATINUM ALBUMS, TREY DO NOT GO AFTER HEAVY-WEIGHTS BECAUSE ALL HE HAS HAVE DONE IS GOT TRUE MUSIC LISTENERS BACKS UP SAYING HE IS A HOUSEHOLD NAME ALREADY….

    STOP IT, LOL!

  67. KD October 13, 2010

I would also be arrogant if I looked as good as he does. YUM YUM YUM

  68. Misty October 13, 2010

    @Lisa

Get a life hun. I’ve met Trey and I never said I didnt like him as an artists. I’m entitled to my opinions and I don’t like his attitude. Simple. “getting paid” shouldn’t be ones goal, because money isnt forever. Leaving a mark and mattering is what is relevant and what will be forever. We already know he’s fine, but he will not get far if he depends on his looks alone!

  69. Imanni October 13, 2010

I saw the Kodak commercial and when he took his picture he said “Passion Pain Pleasure platinum”and then snapped his pic. Did his album go platinum or was he just saying that for the commercial?

  70. TOUCHKAIN October 14, 2010

    LOL DAMN TRENT
