Tricky Stewart: “Christina Aguilera’s ‘Bionic’ Was Promoted Poorly”

Published: Saturday 13th Nov 2010 by Trent

Despite the continued efforts by Christina Aguilera’s camp to erase the commercial disaster that was ‘Bionic’ from her discography, there remains some speculation about what truly went wrong with the project.

One of the record’s main producers, Tricky Stewart, who also happens to be a close friend of the singer, believes that he has the answer – poor promotion. Check out what he had to say below:

“It just seemed like the timing was a little bit off and things got a little bit out of sync for her on that project,” says Stewart, who worked on several Bionic tracks and went on to serve as executive music consultant for Aguilera’s upcoming movie Burlesque (out Nov. 24). “This film is going to bring her right back where she needs to be. When she starts to focus on a new project, I think it’s going to be amazing.”

Stewart doesn’t think Aguilera needs to switch things up when the time comes to record her next album, either. “I think what Christina does musically is always fine,” he adds. “It’s a matter of if it can be marketed properly. When I listen to [Bionic], I definitely am a fan. More than anything, it was promoted poorly.” {Source}

Let’s review: Aguilera promoted this album on ‘American Idol’, ‘The Early Show’, the MTV Movie Awards, ‘Live with Regis & Kelly’, ‘The Today Show’, ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’ and even ‘Vh1 Storytellers’. In addition, there was a new episode of Vh1’s ‘Behind The Music’ filmed specifically to include details about this project so how in the world could Stewart think for a moment that it was promoted poorly?

The only other thing that Aguilera could have done to increase public interest was to come through people’s television screens during her ‘Not Myself Tonight’ video and give them a lap dance with a 50% off coupon for the album. Either that or launch a full arena tour which would have proven to be an even bigger waste of money for her label because the patrons wouldn’t know most of the songs she might have chosen to perform as most people didn’t buy the album.

Simply put: people just weren’t interested in what Aguilera had to offer. The sooner her dwindling fanbase and her team realise that then the sooner they will be able to go back to basics (no pun intended) and find a new direction for her music. Some people just can’t handle the truth.

  5. chombe November 13, 2010

i think it was just the first single cuz it didnt have a good hook..and the video just ruined her..even tho she was the first one to be “outhere” people just like to hate i think xrina should of gone with her song “BIONIC” OR “WOO HOO” FOR FIRST SINGLE..i am a fan of bionic and i think she going to come harder..

    It was poor promotion!!!

Why quit promoting it after it comes out???

  9. Lamb4Life November 13, 2010

This album don’t worth buying it. “S** for Breakfast” and “Lift me Up” are the only songs that stand-out. Other songs are s*****. That’s you’ll get when you copy real talent like Lady Gaga.

Christina always follow the trend. When she came out she COPIED the Queen of Music = MARIAH CAREY. Now Lady Gaga is popular that’s why she is copying her.

Christina will never be a legend. COPYCAT Screaming shouting “singer”

  10. burlesque November 13, 2010

    @ CHOMBE

BAD ROMANCE DIDN’T HAVE CATCHY LYRICS EITHER AND IT WAS A HIT…GAGA’S TALKING THROUGHOUT HALF THE SONG AND EVEN WHEN SHE DOES SING SHE ONLY SINGS THE CHORUS!!! GAGA SOUNDED LIKE A ROBOT THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE DAMN SONG!!! AND EVEN WHEN SHE WAS SINGING SHE WAS ALSO JUST DOING THAT “ROMA MA MA” S***!! THAT’S GENERIC

  11. Trgreaves November 13, 2010

I have to agree with Trent.. That was a whole lot of shows she Went on in promotion of that album so y’all xtina stans need to stfu with that argument.. What I think messed her up was the whole Gaga comparison thing.. Especially as it relates to perez Hilton.or maybe ppl just didn’t like not myself tonite or any other of the singles

  12. YourVoteCounts November 13, 2010

Sorry but poor promotion is hardly an excuse to why Bionic flop, especially considering that she did a lot of promo.

What happened was that the public turned their backs on Christina, and were stuck on all of the GaGa comparisons. Plus, she released all of the wrong singles. Radio wasn’t even playing her songs On top of that, she threw the album away and moved on. She didn’t even spend a year promoting Bionic.

  13. Mishka November 13, 2010

If an album is good, people will talk about it anyway, little promotion or whatever.

But if the album is garbage because the singer is stubborn and doesn’t listen when her management and other people warn her to not come out as Lady Gaga ‘s copycat, of course it will sell poorly.

When someone has the talent of Christina Aguilera, there’s little room for excuses. Bt things happen so we’ll rooting for her to bounce back.

Btw, Trent, Xtina said in a recent interview that the artist she admire the most is RIHANNA. I’m surprised you missed that one. Of course, she admires the only it female artist who can’t try her singing lol

  14. Mishka November 13, 2010

Btw, let’s not forget that when little-promoting ” Bionic” , she had the NERVES to call Lady Gaga “the newcomer” at the time Gaga was just like everywhere around the globe with Bad Romance and Telephone. The little monsters went crazy!

  15. CIARA BANGIN ON 106 AND PARK ALL WEEK November 13, 2010

Tricky must be mighty upset to see all of the great work he puts into girls like christina and ciara be shuttled aside to promote beyonce, ritard and gaga. He is doing some AMAZING work with these beautiful girls, and he and they deserve the massive promotion that less talented people are getting.

  16. CHOMBE November 13, 2010

    @BURLESQUE

I AM IN no way a gaga fan but SHE USED THE SCREAMING S*** GOING RA RA RA RA WHATEVER AND THATS CATCHY! AND SHE IS A GIMMICK THATS WHY PEOPLE BUY S***!!! see ALEJANDRO! goes ALEJ ALE ALE ALEJANDROOO!!! REPEATS AND NOT MYSELF TONIGHT didnt! I LOVE XTINA! but what NMT needed was a better hook! that is all XTINA Will always be on top of gaga! NO MATTER WHAT!!!

  17. fuckhaters November 13, 2010

Mishka: let’s be honest here, Lady Gaga STILL is the newcomer! There’s nothing wrong with that because that’s the reality of her situation. Even Miley Cyrus is much more of a veteran compared to the GagMe. It doesn’t mean she’s any less talented or not, she just happened to be the newest one in the scene. SO it’s really pointless taking that quote out of context. It just shows how ignorant you are. Christina calling Gaga a new comer was like Mariah Carey looking at Christina as her mini-me. Period.

TRENT, again, don’t you have any other artist to pick on? Aguilera is getting a star on Hollywood…so yeah people are so not interested right? You have turned into a bully, and you even put PerezHilton to shame. Really you do. The worst of it is, you really don’t have anything to show for so I don’t get why you like to abuse other people. Are you that insecure towards successful people? Yes Bionic was poorly promoted. It was hardly ever advertised in the UK (which is where you’re from btw, so American appearances don’t apply to you)

  18. kekeluvsu November 13, 2010

OK Trent we get it but how dare y’all try to put Kelly on a pedestal and down play Christina’s success? That s*** is laughable and I like Kelly. 😆

Christina’s biggest problem and I can say this because I bought her album was the fact that she picked the wrong singles. That album is by far one of the best albums to come out in 2010. It might not have been the usual numbers that Christina is used to but I would never call BIONIC a fail like she and countless others.

I’m rooting for her. I think she can come back even stronger the next time around.

  19. GangsterA November 13, 2010

^^ yup i think thats another reason why she floped xtina always bashing other females who she thinks will top her or toping her already and that long ass break didn’t help either how many female artits came out since 2006 her fans are not gonna sit in the dark waiting 4 xtina to come back alot of them switched to another artists(mainly i think beyonce and rihanna) and then in 2008 she release a greatest hits wtf was that oky she got a hit but thats it pepole wanted an album xtina her timing always sux

  21. GARGLE-TINA November 13, 2010

Blah blah blah, “It was Promoted Poorly” “She picked the Wrong Singles”, NO the reason for the FLOP is IRRELEVANCY, years of KARMA, Torn Vocals, & BAD TASTE in Music. Sorry I really dont like her voice & I hate most her Music. Burlesque is a FLOP too & everytime that commercial comes on shes SCREAMING to the TOP OF HER LUNGS!!: THERE IS WOOOOOOORRRLLLDDDDDDDD!!!!! ~Augh My Ears!! Its like the most Annoying note Ive ever heard from SCREECH-Tina.

PEOPLE SHOULD STOP WAITING FOR A “STRIPPED” NUMBER 2 OR PART 2….THAT WILL NEVER HAPPENED! GET OVER IT!

I PREFER ARTISTS WHO DO NEW STUFF, PUSH THEMSELVES, ARE MORE CREATIVE THAN REPETITIVE!

  23. FutureA&RMaster1492 November 13, 2010

While promotion could have been better (most promotion was done during the week of its release), it is not why the album failed. The album failed because it just was not good. It was a very mediocre album. Her previous albums were far superior and had real substance. This album had not substance. It was very two-dementional and she was not true to herself. Those are the reason’s for the album’s failure. Tricky Stewert himself is part of the problem in regard to the failure. He let his producting give it a sound the overran Christina’s role. He has his own sound. Producers should not have their own sound b/c it overshadows the artsit.

  24. ChEeRfUl CyNiC XD November 13, 2010

shes a good artist I hope she comes better next time and doesnt talk s*** about other artists

  25. Dave November 13, 2010

To me it was poor promotion. Just because she promoted it at big venues she did like 3 performances before the album. Like he said, & which I agree “Bionic” was a great album, nothing was wrong with it. Maybe’s people perception of it was bad (not her fault, she is who she is), but nonetheless it was a great album. & I agree she shouldn’t go back to basics with her next album, what she is doing musically was fine. Then she put out “Not Myself Tonight” as a single which was kind of a bad choice, great song, but could’ve been worked on more. Remember there was like no hook to “Not Myself Tonight”, then it started to fall off the charts, instead of major pushing it, she just let it flop & didn’t even switch to a successful single. She had “Woo hoo” which was bad at 1st, but really grew on people. If i’m not right it did debut on Billboard hot 100, she was about to shoot a video for it, then she withdrew it. Let the album come out with a single that had already fell off, “Not Myself Tonight” = Flop album. Then years later she releases “You Lost Me” as a single, which is a great song (Single worthy to me, but to the masses it may not have been). Even releasing “You Lost Me” as a single instead of releasing the original version of it that people had came to love, she released a “not so good as the original” revised version. She had even already performed “You Lost Me” before it was out, then the next time she performed it was like weeks or a month or so later. It was a mess. “Bionic” era was just a hot ass mess. & please don’t start the Chrissy shade when Mariah is flip FLOPPING back & forth. Let’s not get on her, plez… & @Gargle-tina why do you comment on Christina post when you’re clearly biased & do not like her?

  26. ilovextina November 13, 2010

Bad single choices, & you know it!

  27. ilovextina November 13, 2010

    Yaaasss @Dave

In addition to that, she didn’t even do promotion outside of the U.S. which would have at least guaranteed sales of 1 million by now.

  28. who? November 13, 2010

The album is really good and the majority of people throwing shade never even heard the songs. She released the wrong single and made a dated video for the song but people were slagging her off before one song was released. There was a concerted effort by certain bloggers, here, Perez, the mods at ONTD and a host of others who did nothing but create drama and false comparisons where there were none. I will be the first to admit that she wears too much makeup and sometimes screams too much but it’s funny when people are stanning for acts that can’t sing at all and rely on super producers and technology to create their voices, and then have the nerve to say that Xtina can’t sing. Any artist can make a record that doesn’t hit (even your faves) but only those with true talent will have the opportunity to regroup and come back stronger.

  29. Dave November 13, 2010

Exactly @ ILOVEXTINA . & @WHO? you are so right . People we’re already scrutinizing her. It was so much bad publicity around her name. & of course her marriage with her husband was falling apart, she was still doing stuff with “Burlesque”, & don’t forget she still has lil Max. It just wasn’t the right time or a great period for her. But, I find it funny now that she officially has a flop album people find it so convenient. They didn’t have nothing to say when she was slaying their faves from Grammy’s to album sales, to #1 singles, to collabs with all the legends, to legendary performances. As i’ve said the weak only kick you when you’re down, when you’re own top they don’t kick because the most they can do is throw shade @ your feet, instead of your face. After everything’s said in done, she’s still one of the most successful female artist of this decade & one of the most prominent female vocalist (whether you like her singing or not). She has made a mark for herself, a huge ass stamp in the music industry, & if you want to deny it stay delusional. SHE’S A WORLDWIDE NAME, & as she remains multi-talented she WILL make a successful comeback.

  30. dang November 13, 2010

he’s right, it was promoted HEAPS! But it was the lascivious video Gaga comparisons that killed it- the fact of the matter was, it was a disjointed album, she had multiple personailty disorder- one minute she was Gaga/Madonna, next she was Miley Cyrus/Britney, and then classic Xtina.
Misstina needs to look forward with her music now, not backwards.

  31. Chris November 13, 2010

i really liked this album, i feel the real problem was the first single, if she went with WOO HOO it might have been better received and the video was TRASH! that plus her bad attitude towards GaGa all equalled a bad album i think that maybe she should release I HATE BOYS now because of the divorce and i think its a fun song and could POSSIBLY get ppl interusted in her again

  32. Mike November 13, 2010

I totally disagree. Bionic was an amazing album. It had some great songs on it. “Elastic Love”, You Lost Me, Not Myself Tonight, ….and more. Sure it wasn’t what fan normally expect from XTina, ….but it definitely wasn’t as awlful as people are making it out to be. She’s a talented singer and I hope andf pray she continues to put out great music. I mean if Katy Perry can stick around, ………”)

  33. Dontazz November 13, 2010

I AM A FAN…BUT U KNOW HOW MOST ARTIST HAVE AN IDENTITY THAT WE CAN RELATE TO…I NEVER KNOW WHAT IS XTINAS IDENTITY…AND THIS ERA JUST TOTALLY CONFUSED ME….WHICH IS ANOTHER REASON THIS ALBUM SUFFERED..WILL THE REAL CHRISTINA PLZ STAND UP!!???

  34. Speaks Truth November 13, 2010

I don’t know bout the album but if she would have release the “woo hoo” single that would have been her number 1. The video should have her in a choreography showdown!! It should been woo hoo cuz of course Nicki would have made it a number 1 and a ballad at the same time she would have killed it. Some these artist just call a album a flop once it don’t sell, you supose to continue promoting why it’s out!!!!

  35. Kio November 14, 2010

No you fucktard, the whole album was a disgrace to her voice!! That 2 min computer beat s*** is for the kids!!!!! I swear do these producers have any creativity anymore?

  36. Mishka November 14, 2010

    @FUCKHATERS;

I pointed the fact she called her “the newcomer” then Perez Hilton and a whole world of little monsters got mad at her and probably didn’t check her album.

What she did is like you calling me “ignorant”. If you’re more intelligent than me, I’ll probably figure that out. If her album was good, the sales would have spoken by themselves.

    I’m not a hater nor a stan. But F*ck U too.

  37. OLW November 14, 2010

in my opinion it’s just that right now every personalities Xtina has… others have it !
I mean Xtina changed her style concept with every single (stripped) and then endorse a retro image for back to basics…

but now Britney is still the same (debut xtina)
    you got beyonce (performer xtina)
    rihanna (style/concept/marketting xtina)
    katy perry (retro style xtina)
    lady gaga (electronic xtina)

so xtina doesn’t have her place anymore unless she find out a real and new concept that fits her ! I mean she’s no madonna who can do anything and still be there ! she got to find some place again because finally she never got a stable and good place in the industry…
and screaming all the time won’t save her even if it’s her thing :!

  38. Ch… November 14, 2010

And also picking on Lady Gaga didn’t leave a good impression on today’s listeners. Xtina’s bitterness got in the way of her success. She needs to stop playing picking game and look at her own self.

  39. Ch… November 14, 2010

She did A LOT of promo –

Aguilera revealed the title of the album as well as the name of three new songs in the February 2010 issue of Marie Claire magazine. On January 22, 2010, Aguilera premiered a stripped-down version of the Linda Perry produced “Lift Me Up” during the Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief telethon.[25] A new song titled “Woohoo” featuring rapper Nicki Minaj, and written by Aguilera with Claude Kelly and “Not Myself Tonight” collaborators Polow da Don and Ester Dean was posted on Aguilera’s official YouTube channel on May 7, 2010. Aguilera was also featured on the June cover of GQ Germany,[26] the June/July cover of Latina[27] and the June cover of Out.[28]

On May 7, 2010, Aguilera performed “Not Myself Tonight” on The Oprah Winfrey Show.[29] “You Lost Me” was performed on May 26, 2010, on the American Idol finale.[30] Aguilera performed a medley of “Bionic”, “Not Myself Tonight” and “Woohoo” at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards on June 6.[31] On the release day of the album in the United States, June 8, 2010, Aguilera performed a medley of “Bionic” and “Not Myself Tonight” as well as “Beautiful”, “Fighter” and “You Lost Me” on The Today Show.[32] On June 9, 2010, Aguilera gave and interview and performed “You Lost Me” on the Late Show with David Letterman.[33] She performed “Not Myself Tonight” and gave an interview on Live with Regis and Kelly on June 10, 2010.[34] Aguilera performed “Fighter”, “You Lost Me”, “Not Myself Tonight” along with a medley of “Genie in a Bottle”/”What a Girl Wants” on The Early Show on June 11, 2010.[35] On June 13, 2010, Aguilera was featured on VH1 Storytellers[36] as well as on Behind the Music.[37]

Aguilera planned to further promote the album by embarking on the Bionic Tour. Twenty concerts were scheduled across the United States and Canada between July 15, 2010, and August 19, 2010. English singer Leona Lewis was scheduled to be the tour’s supporting act and the tour would be considered the North American leg of Lewis’s The Labyrinth tour.[38] On May 24, 2010, Aguilera postponed the tour until 2011. In a message on her website and from tour promoter Live Nation, Aguilera stated that due to the excessive promotion of the album and her upcoming film debut in Burlesque, she felt she needed more time to rehearse the show and with less than a month between the album release and tour, it was not possible to create and perform a show at the level that her fans expect from her.[39][40]

  40. MrIncredible November 14, 2010

I agree. Her team needs to wake up and smell the coffee… the album did poorly because of poor content and because of Christina’s poorly constructed image. Promo didn’t have a damn thing to do with it!

  41. Xisme November 14, 2010

trent you are an idiot and clearly not very clever.. if you check when all that “promotion” took place youll find it took place practicly in the same week … 1 week before the album was released.. what tricky is trying to say is that there was no real promotion months before hand there was no more promotion after the album was dropped, promotion came to late and lasted a very short time 1 week to be exact, she came in 1 week and was gone instantly after that, then the album fell with nothing to help support it.. promotion for NMT was awful 1 performance on oprah and then nothing. that is what tricky is trying to say.. RCA should have never released Bionic they clearly knew christina was way to busy with burlesque to even think about bionic promotion, blame RCA, Marketing team and bad promotion. the album should have never been released. PROMOTION WAS AWFUL!!!!

  42. Manuel November 14, 2010

Thing is, most of those performances happened during the week of the release of the album; there wasn’t many promotion before that, and absolutely nothing after; you can add to that than only two proper singles were released. It was poorly promoted, there’s not question about that.

Would the album have been a success with better/more intense promotion? Probably not, but it wouldn’t have flopped so bad.

  43. Nichole November 14, 2010

She’s working on a new album I believe. I think she’ll do fine the next time around.

  44. Nichole November 14, 2010

And if she scores with Burlesque, I think that would keep her in a positive light.

  45. Ch… November 14, 2010

    @Manuel

The album would’ve flopped regardless and so what if the promo was during the week of her album release? That’s how promotion works! None of her singles showed progress either. Pop radio played Not Myself Tonight like crazy prior to the music video release and weeks later the sales declined because she lost people’s interest. Stop trying to find someone to blame for Xtina’s failures.

  46. Dave November 14, 2010

She did little promo. The era as a WHOLE was all over the place, end.

  47. aNDY November 14, 2010

She never promoted outside US, so yeah i agree it was promoted poorly.

  48. burlesque November 14, 2010

    @ GangsterA

who has Christina verbally bashed recently??? So it’s ok for Janet to say that Gaga is fun to look at but Christina is considered a b**** for saying it???

All Christina said was that Gaga was very fun to look at…maybe she didn’t know who Gaga was!!! Christina was forever stuck in her studio at her home making Bionic when Gaga came out and I doubt Christina was staying up to par with the current electro trend.

We’ve all known that since 07 that Christina wanted to go futuristic/electro with Bionic. This was way before Gaga even came out! Then here comes Goat Girl making electro, Usher, BEP etc…once they all heard Christina wanted to do electro they all rushed out their music first to make it look like Christina was copying them!

  49. uhhh!! November 14, 2010

the little bit i heard sounded like reject gaga or corny s** related songs (woo hoo) in general it was like disney songs. christina is know for being different and when she came back sounding like everybody else people just wasn’t checking for her. I think she needs to go back in and come up with something totally different from everybody else.

  50. burlesque November 14, 2010

    @ UHHH!!!

Christina stated way back in 07 that she wanted to do electro on Bionic…

then here comes everybody else jumping on that bandwagon…

I mean damn when Christina did jazz on B2B, everybody wanted to jump on that bandwagon and I never once heard anybody calling them copycats and irrelevant

Why is it okay for somebody like Usher to go from doing straight up R&B to mainstream pop and have hit after hit but yet Christina isn’t allowed to??? Because of Usher going electro I haven’t liked him…The only song I liked off Raymond was Making Love and that is because the sound was his roots and what he started out doing…

  51. Renee November 14, 2010

I remember the massive amount of promotion for this album in America. I don’t know what world Tricky Stewart is living in, but Christina received top notch promotion for Bionic. Unfortunately, the project flopped altogether. The reason? Who knows. The music audience is so fickle. But I agree with Trent on this post. I am a Christina fan and I remember the promo for this album. My suggestion is for Christina’s team to accept the fact the album just failed and move on to the next project.

  52. True Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ Blue November 14, 2010

It was a combination of everything. Poor promotion, poor timing and bad single choices. Now in my opinion, the album is completely forgettable at best, however there were a few decent songs off of it (Glam, Prima Donna, My Girls). These songs didn’t sound so generic, and perhaps had she released those as lead singles with GOOD music videos, perhaps Bionic would have fared better. I think the album would have been commercially successful has it been released a couple years earlier, because not everyone was doing electro-pop back then. She wouldn’t have been accused of being a copycat.

That being said, I think poor promotion is the biggest culprit behind its failure. Because let’s face it, as bad as Bionic may have been, worse albums have been released and have been hugely successful (Black Eyed Peas’ The E.N.D. has to be one of the worst records of the past 2 decades, yet look how well it did).

  53. BENJAMIN November 14, 2010

No, no one cared anymore about her music. She disappears for 4 years in between each album, that only opens the gate for new talent to steal your place. Why do you think Beyonce and Gaga refuse to have a seat? Timberlake is an afterthought now too, and even though Biever is only 16, he is riding hard on his coattail.

  54. ERIC November 14, 2010

PROMOTED POORLY! SHE WAS ON AMERICAN IDOL AND ON EVERY TALK-SHOW THE THING IS THAT AGUILERA RELEASED THE ALBUM IN THE MIDDLE OF STRUGGLE OF HER PUBLIC IMAGE CUZ SHE WON’T KEEP HER MOUTH SHUT ABOUT NEW-COMERS! ALSO HER NEW SEXUAL ALTER-EGO WAS NOT VERY WELCOMED IN THE MASSES + A WEEK FIRST SINGLE TO PROMOTE THE ALBUM AND PEOPLE BARELY KNEW SHE WAS RELEASING AN ALBUM.
I STATE THAT OF SHE HAD MADE A VIDEO FOR WOOHOO WITH MINAJ THE ALBUM WOULD’VE SOLD MILLIONS, CUZ THAT WAS ONE OF THE STRONGEST AND MORE MAINSTREAM-URBAN TRACKS ON THE ALBUM.
NOW WITH THIS MOVIE I HOPE SHE CAN GET IT TOGETHER, SHE’S A GREAT ARTIST!

I use to be quite the fan of her, that is until she showed no regards to the people (fans) who made her famous and rich–thank goodness I never bought any of her albums, don’t want my money swimming around in her bank account–But, Christina Aguilera just sucks ass. I won’t be paying a dime to see Coyote Ugly 2. I love Cher, so maybe I’ll watch it on TeVo when it comes to TV in a month or two. Other than that– womp womp womp..

hahaha who lets this armchair critic (brent?) write this s*** hilarious

  61. vegasgirl November 14, 2010

I do think the label played a role in the poor reception of Bionic. They chose the lead off single and ultimately approved that desperate Not Myself tonight video. When they saw there weren’t any legs to the project, they abandoned it. Other labels will continue throwing money into a project hoping for some interest or to prolong success ( Interscope, Def Jam, etc) re-releasing, remixing, deluxe edition-ing and so on. Obviously RCA didn’t want to do that. Didn’t get the response they thought it should have, they trash it, stop promoting it and go back to the drawing board. It’s understandable. In the US she got PLENTY of promo before album came out, not so much after.

The media focused alot on the GAga “controversy”, the blogs on her attitude and frankly, her voice was way better than the songs she and her label chose to include- save that autotune s*** for the people who need it. I know some of her fans just didn’t like the musical direction she chose, they love her but not Bionic.

  65. Julie November 14, 2010

Blackout was promoted poorly. This album is just bad.

  66. Jerome November 14, 2010

Wow, it’s nice that you finally let go of all that emotions, you drama queen. It would’ve killed you otherwise.

It flopped because of so many things, but the promotion is really the one that dragged it down. I remember you posting an article about Christina dropping Bionic like a rock and not promoting it. Now where in this post is that insight? It’s really pathetic Trent how you always desperately find an opening to attack such a talented girl like her, while you constantly nag about Rihanna not being able to sing.

Not Myself Tonight dropped a long way down the charts on its second week and Christina’s team did nothing about it. They even took two months to release You Lost Me for the follow up. What I don’t understand is how an a-list diva like her can’t get a grip on a head-on promotion while her contemporaries can release singles after singles between weeks. Add to the poor promotion the long four-year wait, the moronic Lady Gaga comparisons and her upcoming film, this album, despite its potential, was the perfect recipe for disaster. I have high hopes for her though. Here’s hoping she manage to turn it up with Burlesque while we wait for the 5th album.

  67. GangsterA November 14, 2010

@buresque what i was trying to say is that xtina is insecure (i feel that way) i don’t know if she tried to diss gaga on purpose or not she have history in trashing pepole so even if she didn’t want to diss her the public took it that way and its like every great female blow up xtina want to fight with her i don’t know why may be becuse she feel shes gonna top her or becuse she love picking on pepole anywho she need to stfu next time not even saying a word about other artists

  68. Sean November 14, 2010

It was promoted poorly in that, visually, it was dangerously close to what Lady Gaga was doing at the time. If “Bionic” just had a different cover and “Not Myself Tonight” had a different video concept, I honestly think the album would be a solid staple on the Billboard chats. The album is musically solid and surprisingly unique. It’s only the visual element that created a lot of tension.

  69. james November 14, 2010

    Poor promotion?! MY ASS!!

This b**** had Beyonce promotion (you know what i mean) !

i just think, the album was so Gaga’ISH, and it was released when gaga was still charting.. and like… yeah O_O.

  70. RosaRubbel November 14, 2010

I’m gonna say it over & over again. It wasn’t the promotion, this whole era has been just a hot a.. mess. The music, the singles, the image, her new style. Just Everything. Btw ‘Bionic’ is the definition of the word generic. Of course some songs are catchy (‘Desnudate’, ‘Elastic Love’, ‘Glam’, ‘Prima Donna’, ‘I Hate Boys’, ‘Vanity’), but they can’t catch up with Christina’s vocal talent. They’re just way too generic, she could’ve left those songs to Rihanna & Lady GaGa. Even ‘You Lost Me’ couldn’t save the project and this says a lot because it’s one of the best or even the best song on ‘Bionic’, I also like ‘Lift Me Up’ and ‘Little Dreamer’, but the rest is just not the right material for Aguilera.

  71. rob November 14, 2010

the album is still amazing but it was definitely promoted poorly and she picked the wrong singles

  72. dboy November 14, 2010

    @burlesque
if u hate beyonce ..just leave it there rather than say crap
how can u say dreamgirls is anothre glitter or showgirls when it is an adaptation of a broadway musical that debuted in 1981..it belongs to a completely diff era and commercially and critically astronomically more successful that those 2 films put together..what company would put money to recreate a flop? which is what showgirls and glitter

  73. jj November 14, 2010

    BIONIC was promoted very well

example of POORLY PROMOTED was BLACKOUT!

  74. SunDee November 14, 2010

@JJ: Britney is everyone’s favourite & Xtina easily hated by ‘everyone’.

@James: you Think Bionic Album is very Gaga-ish?!?! *shocked*
besides read hatred comment about the album.
have you really HEARD the whole Bionic?
well you should try to & then comment back.

  75. SunDee November 14, 2010

Anyway… BIONIC still my fav & most listenable Album from Christina Aguilera.

Bionic – is like the best top 40 mashed into one album.
(it has many style of music & different layers of her vocals)
even Trent LOVED it & give 4 stars. cmiiw

here in germany most people didn’t know that there is a new christina album. i think her promotion abroad was very bad.
i love the album – i hope she finds her place again between all those rihannas, mileys, katy perrys and other girls who are annoying as hell!

  79. zith November 14, 2010

check out ‘Lift me up’ , ‘Bird of Prey’ & ‘Stronger Than Ever’…just perfect songs.

Honestly, I’m a big fan of mainstream artists like britney, xtina, gaga, rihanna, beyonce & swift!
This time xtina made a big mistake when being accused for copying gaga-styles.
Her album cover also like s***! (just show the finest figure of aguilera)…the album cover-concept-idea team should quit from this arena. U should design poster for rehabilitation centers!
First, im one of many others out there who think this album is a junk when media consider it as flop. (so,..i prefer not to listen)
but when i listen again (after tricky’s statements),..this album is great & fine.

there’s nothing to do with promotions,..Blackout-Britney sold well (sooo well),..even no promotions (none at all)…only the freak vid of gimme more,
at that time Britney was at ‘bad situation’ + the most retarded performance at 07 VMA.

She still sells Blackout like hot-cakes.

So the recipe to success is,.. give great singles!
    Avoid ‘artist-comparison’..
Do u ever heard Britney compared to other artist??..

    @ DBOY

GAGA IS NOT THE FIRST TO DO ELECTRO MAINSTREAM MUSIC NOR IS SHE IS THE FIRST TO WALK AROUND LOOKING ECCENTRIC!!!! MADONNA, CHER, DAVID BOWIE, GRACE JONES ETC….HAVE ALL DONE THAT BEFORE GAGA JUST CAME IN AND ALL OF A SUDDEN ALL YOU TEENAGERS THINK SHE INVENTED THIS KIND OF ECCENTRIC-NESS!

LETS NOT FORGET THAT CHRISTINA ALREADY SAID IN 07 THAT SHE WANTED TO DO ELECTRO/FUTURISTIC SOUND ON BIONIC AND ALL OF A SUDDEN HERE COMES GAGA ALMOST A YEAR LATER WITH THE FAME WITH HER MUSIC SOUNDING LIKE IT WAS RUSHED OUT BECAUSE THEY KNEW IT WOULD COMPETE WITH XTINA’S NEW SOUND!!!

GAGA MAY HAVE CAME OUT IN 08 BUT SHE DIDN’T BLOW UP UNTIL 09…

ALL THESE FEUDS CHRISTINA HAS BEEN INVOLVED IN HAPPENED NEARLY 10 YEARS AGO WHEN SHE FIRS CAME OUT!!!

SO IT’S OKAY FOR JANET TO SAY THAT GAGA IS FUN TO LOOK AT BUT CHRISTINA IS LABELED A B**** FOR SAYING IT???

F*** U HATERS….CHRISTINA IS ON HER WAY FOR A COMEBACK!!!

  82. Reina November 14, 2010

Christina just do good music..no lady gaga swipes, no over the top image,no corny songs, no thematic concept for next album….she will be fine

  83. BlOOOTCH November 14, 2010

@ burlesque: Here you are, dear.. A nice review from LA Times for your unbelieving eyes

And BTW I was TEN when XTINCTION and Britney hit the scene, you do the math.

    LA Times Burlesque Review:

“Judging by the trailer, the film looks like it’s overflowing with camp and schmaltz — even if the pairing of Cher and Aguilera seems appealing. The story is basically preposterous, a la ‘Coyote Ugly’: All a girl really wants in life is to wear very little and dance atop a bar! (Or in this case, wear very little and dance in a bar.) And the bits of dialogue we hear here are so hokey that we can’t imagine taking the movie seriously.

She and Tucci do seem to have good chemistry. And one of the many doctors from ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ (Eric Dane) serves as a potential love interest, which is a plus, if only for the eye candy. But while we’re looking forward to the song-and-dance numbers from Aguilera, her acting looks like it leaves a lot to be desired. She’s trying so hard to be innocent as her character pleads with Cher, ‘Just tell me what you want!'”

AND here is the link if you’re still in disbelief:

    http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/movies/2010/08/preview-review-burlesque-christina-aguilera-cher-trailer.html

  84. burlesque November 14, 2010

    @ BLOOTCH

    YOU CANNOT JUDGE A TRAILER!!!

LA TIMES IS BASING IT OFF THE TRAILER FOR CHRIST SAKES!!!

THEY HAVEN’T EVEN SEEN THE MOVIE YET!!!

BUT THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE ALREADY SEEN IT HAVE NOTHING BUT GREAT THINGS TO SAY ABOUT IT AND SAY IT’S BETTER THAN EXPECTED

  85. BlOOOTCH November 14, 2010

And another thing @ Burlesque.. I agree with you on your statement about Beyonce’s acting. She’s a talented, beautiful, entertainer who sings like a dream.. But the movie industry… nay. If you read that review, you’ll notice they mention a few singer’s failed attempts at the big screen. But your theory about Dream Girls is grotesquely inaccurate . That movie won a Golden Globe and a Academy Award. It was a wonderful rendition to the Broadway play that someone mentioned earlier. And as far as I’m concerned, Beyonce’s acting was completely overshadowed by the brilliance of Ms Jennifer Hudson. Some people were born to be actors, and some are just paid to be.. Simple.

  86. uhhh!! November 14, 2010

@burlesque Really TBH the whole electronic pop movement was already taking place in 07 so don’t try to make excuses for an album that was just not as good as previous ones by Xtina…and another thing every other artist that did an electronic pop sound didn’t have an image that was very similar to Gaga

  87. uhhh!! November 14, 2010

@burlesque and another thing artist don’t sit around listening to what another artist is going to do for their next project lady Gaga was making music was in 07.

  88. LTM November 15, 2010

Bionic flopped for alot of reasons that just added up.
1.Terrible choice in singles. Not Myself Tonight did bad when its tasteless video came out. Woohoo should have been an official single, and You Lost Me was released at a bad time. Who wants to hear a ballad during the middle of summer?
    2. Bad promotion. The only real promotion she got was the Mtv Movie Awards, vh1’s Sorytellers, the American Idol performance, and the Behind The Music episode. Her promotion on Fuse t.v was pointless cause not everyone gets that station. Going on Oprah and Regis & Kelly was pointless too because their audience isnt interested in the type of music xtina puts out. People who watch those shows are middle aged women who probably dont listen to songs that go “Im Kissing on all the boys and the Girls” . And who the f*** watches The Early Show?
3.Bad Image. Xtina’s never had a good image. Comparisons to Britney, Britney & Pink, and now GaGa leave a bad taste in ppl’s mouth.
4.Bad Music. Bionic is Xtinas worst work to date. The only good songs were Lift Me Up, You Lost Me, Elastic Love, S** For Breakfast, Not Myself Tonight, and Bionic. The songwriters who helped her were too generic, Tricky Stewart being one of them. She didnt use one of the main keys to her success: Linda Perry. Xtina and Linda Perry create magic when they write songs together. Instead of writing with Linda, she wrote with Tricky and Ester Dean, the most generic songwriters in the music industry today

@ the ppl who say Blackout had no promotion. In 2007, Britney Spears was making headlines lef and right. All press is good press.

  89. Andrew November 15, 2010

    I agree with Tricky.
Wth are you talking about Trent?

  90. jj November 15, 2010

@LTM ur funny even britney was a headline on 2007 but still many people were very angry to her because of her behaviour! u cannot call that promotion because it WAS HER WORST YEAR EVER! PEOPLE HATES HER!

  91. Rihanna’s Dusty Red Wig November 15, 2010

If all press was good press, Blackout would have done twice what Circus did, period. Britney’s album was nowhere to be seen in the news; it was all about her bald-headed, can’t-take-care-of-her-damn-kids ass ways that completely overshadowed the fact that the b**** even HAD an album coming out that year in the first place.

And like others have pointed out, it’s Christina and her team’s fault for the poor promotion of the album, AND NOBODY ELSE! Either way it’s in the past now. B**** best be busting some ass in the studio for this fifth album because she’s got a lot to make up for the mess that was the Bionic era (if you can even call it an ‘era’).

  92. lisa November 15, 2010

    TRENT U DONT KNOW S***!

  93. Leena November 16, 2010

I think the album was too all over the place and should have been more focused, much like her last album. Her most cohesive one to date is actually the first one which, no surprise, is her best selling one, which she had no creative control over. She could sing the phonebook and it would sound fantastic but there’s a reason people with lack of real vocal talent like Britney Spears outsell her: Britney has little control over the choice of music she makes while Christina is often given a free range to take her albums in a certain direction she prefers. What you end up with is a couple great songs (You Lost Me) that could have been a hit if it weren’t for the initial release of a horribly outdated single (Not Myself Tonight), much like most of the songs on her album, that turned everyone off. Critics have always lambasted her poor choice of material and for good reason. She should ditch the whole female empowerment by way of a dressing like a trashy s&m s*** and reposition her image, make some more songs with Sia or someone of that quality and explore one good genre rather than 10 on one album that will showcase her talent like it should. I

  94. yuuya November 23, 2010

Just thought I’d put my two cents in.

I agree that the album was promoted poorly. Initial promotion was good with ‘Not Myself Tonight’, but it went downhill from there. ‘WooHoo’ had the opportunity to be a hit, but there was no music video, hardly any live performances to promote it, and thus the song just ended up falling under the radar. She then followed up with a boring ballad, it didn’t have radio appeal and shouldn’t have been made a single, period. The album had the songs to make it successful, but they just didn’t utilize what they had, and the album suffered because of it.
