From The Vault: Spice Girls – ‘2 Become 1’

Published: Sunday 5th Dec 2010 by Trent

This week’s From The Vault selection helped the Spice Girls to become a global phenomenon. ‘2 Become 1’ was third single to be released from their massively successful ‘Spice’ debut (which sold over 23 million records worldwide since being released in 1996).

Co-written by all of the group members alongside Matt Rowe and Richard Stannard, the song peaked at #1 in the UK and #4 in the US, achieving platinum and gold status in both territories respectively. The song was praised by critics for the clever inclusion of a safe sex message and some even compared the composition to a Mariah Carey-styled ballad.

The best feature of this song is that all 5 was members of the group had the opportunity to sing. While it is clear that Sporty Spice was by far the most talented vocalist, every member was able to lend her voice (or lack thereof) to the record.

Very few groups often give all members the chance to shine like that. In fact, with the exception of Danity Kane, En Vogue and Rich Girl, it is difficult to find other examples.

This was when pop music was decent and original. The worst singer in the group was Geri, but she still had her time to shine and they played to her strengths.

Victoria Beckham was never as bad as they made out, her debut album is better than the tripe that Cheryl Cole is putting out but it was just the wrong time for her

oh man the spice girls was the s***. I remember going to England one summer it was crazy. Everywhere you went you saw spice girls merchandise. I remember they had this commercial where they would play pieces of it until they played the whole thing. i think it was a contest for the fans or something like that. very creative though.

  3. Robert December 5, 2010

Um… You forgot DC3… Destiny’s Child… Survivor era – Destiny Fulfilled. Everyone had their own parts… even michelle sing a lil bit on Bills, Bills, Bills in concerts.

  4. GangsterA December 5, 2010

  6. FUTURESTARdelux December 5, 2010

This is my favourite song from them! i need to find somebody so it can be “our” song LOL
Seriously though nobody will probably ever have the pop culture impact that these girls have had again, it was F****** CRAZY everywhere you went was Spice Girls they DOMINATED the world. When people from my generation hear these songs it just taked you back to a time and a place it’s amazing.
    80,000,000 from 3 albums and a greatest hits #ICONS
It’s so f***** up that they don’t have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame and DC do even though SG sold more and had a bigger impact…
I hope they reunite one more time and tour because i didn’t get tickets last time and i NEED to see them live before i die lol

P.S *DEAD* at Trant trying to get Mariah in on this somehow, i bet the people that said that was YOU lol

  7. Crack is wack December 5, 2010

so tired of Mariah in everything as if she is so flipping special

  8. MandipBirminghamUK December 5, 2010

I so loved the Spice Girls and still do. This article inspired me to listen to their debut album – still sounds great even after 14 years of its release! I saw them 4 times in concert – what brilliant shows! I Agree – sporty spice had a great voice. Victoria’s debut album was good but as you say Dunster it came out at the wrong time – it was pop at at time when Kylie’s electeront/dance was dominating the airwaves.

  9. Lisa December 5, 2010

LOL I think you missed Destiny’s Child out. P****.

  10. GaGa Is The Messi December 5, 2010

WHO GIVE A S*** ??? DC3 ARE THE BEST OF ALL TIME

    NEXT

  11. Kyle December 5, 2010

Backing up Lisa and Robert here. Destiny’s Child is an obvious example. Beyonce was the lead, but they certainly all sang on pretty much every single from Survivor on… SMH at them not being included on your list, since clearly it was calculated.

  12. DESTIny’s Trash December 5, 2010

No one gives a damn about those Destiny’s Trash!

They all look like monkeys and are all considered lower forms of human beings!

    DESTINY’S CREATURES!

The endless bitter shade is getting old.

And BTW DC are the best selling girl group of all time – as verified by Guiness Book Of World Records & World Music Awards.

Spice Girls were the s***, though.

Am I the only one who noticed the Destinys Child shade? Trent is so mad.

I never knew Spice Girls were a real group until about 3 years ago actually. I just knew the spice girls movies was my fav. movie of all time when I was younger.

To bad the spice girls were never able to do this.

  15. FUTURESTARdelux December 5, 2010

@THEPHOENIX DC have not sold more than Spice Girls, DC sold 40m RECORDS that’s albums & Singles combined (5 Studio albums, 1 Greatest Hits album, 2 Remix Albums) while the Spice Girls sold 50m ALBUMS (3 Studio Albums, 1 Greatest Hits album) and most of the sales where from the 1st 2 albums before Geri left so essentially SG shat all over DC’s career with 2 album… SG have sold 80m RECORDS all together.
If they reform DC may eventually sell more albums but they won’t be more successful because it took them many more albums to do it.

  16. DC FAN December 5, 2010

You know the funny thing is that Beyonce only got all the shine on the first two albums. On Survivor and Destinys Fulfilled every member in the group had a chance to showcase there talent and shine. It always bewilders me how every just ignores that and says Kelly and Michelle never sang lead. When indeed they did. Kelly even had lead roles on the first two albums as well. On Destiny Fulfilled Kelly had a whole song to herself, “Bad Habit”.

Actually on Destinys Fulfilled I don’t recall a whole song where Beyonce is the only person singing lead.

  22. Tiffany December 5, 2010

TLC also shared singing on their albums.

  23. matt December 5, 2010

I’m sorry to burst people’s bubbles on this post but Spice Girls mega S*** all over DC’s career, had to be said, the impact they created on young girls and the universe was on a different level to DC, no shade intended on DC but come on, some people on here need their brains checking out!!

  24. ~aMaZiNG.Lee~ December 5, 2010

I love the Spice Girls! This is one of my favorite songs by them, but my all time favorite song from them is ‘Holler’! I don’t think they are the best female group regardless of their sales, but I still love them.

LOL @ Trent’s shade! Even though they all sang at some point, it was obvious that Sporty spice and Scary spice were the lead! Just like we knew Beyonce was the lead but Kelly and Michelle all sang at some point. Not to mention, while you’re so busy trying to throw shade, you forgot to mention TLC as they all had their chance to shine as well! Although Left Eye didn’t sing, she rapped which was one of their many distinctions as a female group! She was more dominant on their debut album, songs like Ain’t Too Proud To Beg, while TBoz was more dominant on Crazy S*** Cool which was more of a mature sound, songs like Creep, and Chili always had her ad libs on damn near EVERY song while still leading songs on her own, i.e. their biggest hit ‘No Scrubs’! So what the f*** are you talking about Trent? Hmmm-mmmmm yeah I didn’t think you knew!

    Carry on…..

  25. DLLF December 5, 2010

    Spice Girls >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Destin’ys child.

  26. elleuk December 5, 2010

i loved the spice girls, my room and wardrobe were proof of my stan. i had no idea about the sexual message in the song lol. if there is one thing i admire about 90’s pop was that sexual messages in songs were well hidden from young fans in a classy way. alot of current artist could follow that example. young kids don’t need to be singing about having a p**** that will keep a man of the streets.

  27. MissImpartial December 5, 2010

I used to love the Spice Girls. And I think he did not include DC because of their history. I mean most Beyonce fans on this side said Beyonce was DC than how can you say that they had the same shine in the band. We all know Beyonce was getting everything in her favour and the Girls were not treated the same.

    @DC Fan

The others only got to sing after the scandal and everyone was hating on Beyonce so her father used some damage control and trying to make it seem like it is not only Beyonce.
They started to get to sing on the Survivor album
I mean did anyone hear the other ones sing I mean that was one of the reason that the other girls started to doubt Matthew.

Not hating just stating what everyone knows except her stans.

I still love these chicks I remember that they dominated the UK & the US! The Spice Girls are very smart business women. This was a time when you needed some type of musical talent to survive in the Music Business

  33. Destiny’s Trash December 5, 2010

Too bad Destiny’s Child turned out irrelevant. No one remembers those trashy ghetto girl groups who want money from men!

Trash, just like the entire black race. And don’t get me started with the dirty smell of black people! Yuck!

  34. DC FAN December 6, 2010

    @MISSIMPARTIAL

true, but they knew their roles and each had nothing against it. According to Letoa and letoya on the E special.

Beyonce LEAD, Kelly 2nd Lead, Latavia Backing Alto(Also hype person of the group and she sang lead on “Sweet Sixteen), Letoya Backing Soprano

Another thing to note is that Survivor era was when DC got more power from there record label and when beyonce started writing songs for the group which would also lead to everyone getting a part. And Beyonce was the Lead Singer even b4 Mathew became their manager. So we can’t say Beyonce got all the shine just because her father was manager.

  35. DC FAN December 6, 2010

IM about irritated with this sire. Why are you blocking my comments.

  36. DC FAN December 6, 2010

Missempartial true, but they each knew their respective roles and had no rpoblem with it. According to Latavia on the E! Special they did.
    Beyonce:LeAD
    Kelly:2nd LEad
Latavia:Backing Alto(also she sang lead on Sweet Sixteen and was the groups hype person in live shows)
Latoya-Backing Soprano Another thing to note is that the survivor era was when DC got more power from there record label. Beyonce started writing which would also lead to the other girls getting MORE lead roles in the songs. And Beyonce was the lead singer b4 Matty became the manager so to say she is only lead singer bcuz of his management is totally false

  37. Beystanbish December 6, 2010
