New Song: Jennifer Hudson – ‘Where You At’

The 1st single from Jennifer Hudson’s new 12-track album, ‘I Remember Me’ (in stores on March 22nd), was released today. The R. Kelly-written ‘Where You At’ was co-produced by Harvey Mason Jr. Give it a listen below:

There is no denying the magnitude of Hudson’s voice but her inability to control that gift is her only downfall. For example, she sounded as though she was shouting over the drum-assisted production of this track instead of allowing her voice to be apart of the music.

Either way, it will be interesting to see if this song will succeed on on radio. Given the current Dance/Pop direction of mainstream radio, the record might be restricted to excel on the Urban formats. Only time will tell.

    AWFUL!!!

  3. Chile Please!! January 24, 2011

Boring! I swear she sounds the same on almost all her songs. We get it now you can do the famous belting…it’s time to do something else with your voice boo. To me she sounds like she needs to do Broadway plays!! NEXT!

  4. RihannaForever January 24, 2011

Where’s the soul in her voice? This was so disappointing.

  5. Jason January 24, 2011

This song slays…Are we listening to the same song? She killed it, and I can’t wait for March. 22.

  6. 2BAD2BME January 24, 2011

IMMA NEED LIKE A WHITNEY HOUSTON TYPE OF TRACK WHILE YOU IN YOUR PRIME GIRL COME ON NOW!

  7. little kimberly DAMNIT January 24, 2011

Started off boring as hell but I was def in love with the last minute or so. Still excited for the new album . I can’t say how I’m glad there are some artists standing in the midst of this electronic dance techno stuff and I’m not knockin it but it seems that’s becoming the new definition of pop. And by the way, r&b is not your lane Trent, there wasn’t a drop of shouting in this song. And ‘inability to control that gift’ ? You’re hilarious.

  8. Jamie January 24, 2011

Trent, where’s your record deal, music degree, or grammy? Oh, ok. Just remember, you’re the blogger blogging about her, and it’s not the other way around. This song is very good, and anyone who thinks otherwise, is just hating. Jennifer’s voice is very controlled.

  9. jay January 24, 2011

Song is boring and I only see Urban Ac stations playing this. But I didn’t expect more from jennifer this is her sound.

  10. Tonya January 24, 2011

Trent you are the BIGGEST hater! This song is BANANAZ. When does she scream? She sings this song perfectly, nothing short of AMAZING VOCAL! If the rest of her album is anything like this, then we shall definitely see Jennifer Hudson at the Grammy’s! Haterz PLEASE fall back! I’m not the biggest J-Hud fan, but she did exactly what I’ve been waiting for her to do (NOT OVERSING), and she surpassed my expectations! I’m getting this album!!!

  11. stan January 24, 2011

    eh…

  12. Christian January 24, 2011

    OH NO!!!!

  13. cleanslater January 24, 2011

yes @2BAD2BME these artist wander why the same people get all the awards and recognition but they seem to forget that they do not utilize their ability like us fans wants them to. get it together girl and give us some #screamatme music.

  14. 2BAD2BME January 24, 2011

@cleanslater YES I WANT HER TO DO A BIG TRACK TO PUT HER ON THE MAP BUT THEY GIVING US THIS ICE CREAM SOFT BULL….

  15. TIMMI January 24, 2011

The track is decent, I think it needed a longer climax.

You people who have criticised Jennifer’s singing know nothing about music, or the voice specifically for that matter. It’s irritating when you keep talking about control, do you even know what control is?

Her control is actually very strong. If you think her control is off, you either simply do not like her voice (which is fair enough) or do not like the way she uses it (which is also fair enough). It is not a matter of voice control; it is a matter of opinion and what you like/do not like. Her control is fine.

  16. 2BAD2BME January 24, 2011

and how da hell u get my same avatar lls

  17. little kimberly DAMNIT January 24, 2011

    @Rihannaforever

Do you mean to say that because she lost weight , she no longer has the ‘soul’ in her voice? Because to me she sounds the same. The weight doesn’t make any difference. And btw, I have to ask, where is the soul in Rihannas voice? Just asking lol

    Can’t stop listening to this

  18. TheMan4u January 24, 2011

she’s the ONLY one out today who could pull of a vintage Whitney track

  19. TIMMI January 24, 2011

I need some more “Love is Your Color” and “All Dressed in Love”.

Those song are classic and show Jennifer’s voice used at it’s best.

  20. TIMMI January 24, 2011

    @RIHANNAFOREVER

First off, I’m no Rihanna hater – I enjoy most of her music.

But as a stan of Rihanna… are you really in a position to talk about soul in the voice?

  21. Prince January 24, 2011

This song should not be the lead single off her album cuz its boring. This song dont even top Spotlight or If this isnt love. R they serious in releasing this as a 1st single…..I guess. I know Jennifer can come harder than that.

  22. Stale Juice January 24, 2011

I used to love this site but as of late this site seems to promote nothing but garbage and put down anyone whose actually got talent. its a bad thing that J Hud has a strong voice? But Britney is the s***? C’mon! And as for your comment about the song doing well in todays dance/electro sound driven market, what a boring market it would be if everyone made that. Theres room for everyone of all types of music. And I commend an artist who can stay tru to themselves and not jus jump on whatevers hot at the momment and pretend to be inovative.

Music would be alot more interesting if more artist made music true to themselves and not to what they are told is going to sell…

  23. Mysteryuz January 24, 2011

Why does she stand like that in like every shot now? We get it, you’ve lost weight and are able to cross your legs, I congratulate her on her new image but she needs her old personality back. Hate the song by the way.

  24. Ogagus January 24, 2011

trent is just a hater, hudson has control listen to “Let It Be Me” with Rod Stewart; so what r u saying… her 1st album was heaven, and she didn’t over sing here… Trent go and kiss a naked wire

  25. Humanoid 5000 January 24, 2011

Given the current state of music. This song is nothing special and as usual these stans trying to hype it likes it’s something new and different. This is dated at best. Sorry but the truth is the truth plus it sounds kind of cheap production wise. She could have done better then this. I hope this really isn’t the first single if so she has just blacklisted herself from the pop radio format period and despite any different opinion and preference of music the Hot100 counts by about 55%. Now we know she can sing but this isn’t hot it’s very boring until the end

  26. Alexander January 24, 2011

Top 20 billboards/ top 10 R&B charts this single will chart!
R Kelly is everywhere and has done a wonderful job getting back to its roots of R&B/
Trey Songz can’t write a single like this nor can he wipe his own b***.

Welcome back Jennifer, never mind these haters who wishes to listen to autotunes/voice overs and pop!

  27. NOBLACKPERSONWANTSTOLOOKAFRICAN January 24, 2011

JENNIFER STILL NEEDS TO DROP ANOTHER 30 POUNDS, SHE AINT SKINNY ENOUGH!

    BTW, THE SONG IS WHACK!

SHE NEEDS TO CHANGE UP HER STYLE…

  28. RosaRubbel January 24, 2011

She killed the end. She sings powerfully, but she’s not overdoing it. The song is maybe not as strong as ‘Spotlight’ or ‘If This Isnt Love’, but it’s simple and beautiful.

  29. Beyoncé Knowles Herself January 24, 2011

    Awfully GENERIC. NEXT!

    It’s a POP song (and a s***** one at that), not R&B.

  30. ~aMaZiNG.Lee~ January 24, 2011

    Don’t like it.

    Jennifer is still extremely OVERRATED.

  31. Beyoncé Knowles Herself January 24, 2011

^ The fact that she won the grammy for best R&B album in 2009 is still a joke, right?

  32. RosaRubbel January 24, 2011

    @ ~aMaZiNG.Lee~

Why do you think she is overrated?

  33. JJFAN1814 January 24, 2011

I like the song. Leave it up to Trent to write a deceitful review, I thought she would be belting throughout the entire song, WRONG! Trent, have a seat.

I wish it could have been stronger i.e. Spotlight. But I hope it does well regardless.

  34. Shun January 24, 2011

This sounds like a Whitney Houston song from the 1990s.

    moving right along…..

  35. OKAY January 24, 2011

The Song Reminds Me Of You Saved Me By R. Kelly #justsaying

  36. ~aMaZiNG.Lee~ January 24, 2011

    @Beyonce Knowles Herself

I kinda liked her album. I thought it was a good R&B album. I’m not sure who she was up against, so I wouldn’t know if she deserved best R&B album that year.

    @Rosarubbel

I think her voice is overrated, really. She’s just loud and people pass that off as an awesome voice, when it really isn’t. Aside from the many technicalities, like lack of control and singing from her throat, she sounds the exact same way on every song. She has absolutely ZERO versatility.

  37. Dave January 24, 2011

    More like Promo single…

  38. Beyoncé Knowles Herself January 24, 2011

I agree with the zero versatility in her voice

  39. RosaRubbel January 24, 2011

    ~aMaZiNG.Lee~

Yes she sounds almost the same in every song, but maybe she needs to do a different type of sound, cause a lot of her songs sound similar too. I just like her voice. In my opinion there are a lot of other overrated artists out there…

Side Note: Do you have a vocal coach or something like that? Just askin.

  40. Renae January 24, 2011

I’m an R&B girl so I’m loving it.

  41. MuzikJunkie! January 24, 2011

@Stale Juice I totally agree with you!

  42. OJIE KING January 24, 2011

yes, She has a fantastic voice, no denying that. in my opinion, she should use her pocket book and slap the person who gave her this song! Please give us something of more substance or ask Beyonce to get her people tp write her something that will sell

  43. T-sParkz January 24, 2011

C’mon now Jenn. I like you and all but the song is boring. The end of the song is the only part that it interests you but the whole song should be like this. Not a good look!!!

  44. Ch.. January 24, 2011

Well, R. Kelly slayed with the lyrics. Your faves could never come for the King’s pen game.

  45. O January 24, 2011

@ trent n those BOOOBOO DA FOOLS THAT LEFT NEGATIVE COMMENTS ABOUT THIS TUNE need SPECIAL DELIVERANCE

THIS IS A BIIIIIIG TUNE . PERFECT N EVERYTHING ABOUT IT IS A HIT*

@TRENT SEEMS HER MANAGEMENT HAVE NOT BEEN PAYING IN CHEQUES FOR THATGRAPE FOR SUPPORT! BUSINESS DECISION AIGHT.

ADMIT IT, THIS IS A TUNE….FIRE

  46. CURLY SUE January 24, 2011

Jennifer is soooooooooooooooo overrated, and this song is boring. Can she do anything else with her voice?

  47. WorldWideWaddie.com January 25, 2011

I’m not a fan of the title because it sounds very Fantasia like, but vocally, Jennifer did not oversang and did an exceptional job. I’ll bump this, but I hope there is better from her new album.

  48. sickvokals January 25, 2011

Sounds like a left over from the last album. I’m over rooting for her, cuz in reality she wasn’t even TOP 3 on American Idol. I thought Clive Davis or someone would’ve worked with her by now.

  49. Ariana January 25, 2011

I strongly disagree w/ Trent saying that Jennifer oversang, she actually had very controlled vocals, like them.
The not-so-bright side of this is that the song is incredibly boring. Hopefully the rest of the album is wayyyyy different to this.

  50. JustAFan January 25, 2011

To all who say that Jennifer is over-rated I COMPLETELY AGREE… GRANTED she does a have a GREAT VOICE she is is still over rated… I mean let’s be honest… she won her OSCAR for SINGING… because her acting was not up to par, but that’s just MY OPINION (No hate needed)… and as far as her Grammy… another LETS BE HONEST MOMENT… The public loves tragedy, and Jennifer had a HUGE personal tragedy, which in turn catapulted her career…YES it’s sad to say that, but this is the world we live in… as far as her competition that year, Eric Benet, Boys II Men, Al Green, and Raphael Saddiq (all great artist, but NONE who had current success or public attention so it was a NO BRAINER that she would win) Compare that to THIS years nominees, Raheem DeVaughn, John Legend & the Roots, Monica, Fantasia, and Jaheim, a MUCH better crop of artist and competition… AGAIN NO HATE NEEDED ALL IS JUST MY OPINION… She has a great voice, and image team (LOL) but she is still VERY OVER RATED… IMO

  51. daznielle bahamas January 25, 2011

smt she is sexxyy didnt listen to the song maybe later

  52. Kio January 25, 2011

Man this s*** is whack! I love J hud, but man this Just soulless to began with!! I mean where is the orchestration at, the runs, the power!! Her voice way to good to make shiity music like this!

  53. keasyy January 25, 2011

for yall to post a picture of her looking like a drag queen is just………

  54. Deveal2010 January 25, 2011

This iz a nice song , what happen to the good old days when you had pipes you were praised?? So yall telling me cuz she dont got Rihanna limited vocal, Katy limited vocal, kesha limited vocal that its dated and boring , really?? If I was in the industry and could actually sing id be terrified cuz i know i would not sell cuz ppl are not here for that anymore truly sad. But i like the song , b**** can sing its Jhud the f****** oscar winner. im sure if she pumps her p**** a lil more , wear a lil less, and put a techno beat to it then maybe shell be a reguarded as a genius that slaying everyone lol you f****** people.

  55. Jasmine January 26, 2011

Her voice is great. This is a basic track that she brought to life. I just wish she got better producers or took some notes off of Beyonce on how to diversify your sound by working with different writers and producers. She should have a hot single as her first single and needs to put her vocals on a smash hit record. She deserves success and I will buy her album no matter what but I want her to really have a number 1 records.
