There is no better way to kick off 2011’s From The Vault series than with a song from Brandy. Coincidentally, ‘What About Us?’ was released as the 1st single from the R&B singer’s ‘Full Moon’ LP on January 1st 2002 – New Year’s day.
The track, which was co-written by Brandy herself and produced by her longtime collaborator Rodney Jerkins, peaked at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and at #3 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. ‘What About Us?’ performed even better in the UK, climbing to #4 on the Official UK Singles Chart.
At the time of its release, this video was one of the best of Brandy’s career. Edgy and artistic, the visual distanced the singer from the relatively safe and innocent appeal of her earlier projects, demonstrating an artist who was ready to take the next step in her career.
The entire ‘Full Moon’ album illustrated Brandy’s continued growth as a vocalist as she continued to explore the full extent of her brilliant contralto. Hopefully, she can once again make music like this because if she wants to return to prominence in 2011 she has to deliver nothing but the best.

I love this woman! I remember losing my mind when I first saw this video because Brandy was just starting to show more of her edge and it complimented the sass you would hear in her songs. I was sold on this after seeing this video! She’s so hot and glossy in the red! It’s funny this is posted, I was just talking about how her this evening and I always give her credit for having the most impressive albums. I think she’s 1 of the few artist around today that make the most listenable music that you can play from start to finish. Thanks thatgraprjuice for posting this. I have to totally agree with you the full moon album by far has been brandy’s best work from lyrical content to production and vocal performance. This album was way ahead of its time. In order for Brandy to be successful again she has to produce music with the same quality as fool moon or better and from the producers I hear she is working witg for the next album, I believe its l safe to say that she is heading in the right direction. Brandy I am rooting for you you can do it!!!!!
When You Touch Me is my favorite song from that album! And whoever said Brandy was boring, go look up her Human concerts on Youtube. She dances and sings, all while sounding great! She is a beast. I do understand that people are interested in get up and dance, bubblegummish music, though. It will be hard for Brandy to get back on top with Beyonce and Rihanna around, even though she is obviously a better vocalist.
This is my #3 favorite Brandy Song of all time behind ‘Have You Ever’ and ‘Talk about our love’.
I hope she does well. I like to think as albums as school projects – you have to have the information and the presentation. The music videos, packaging, and promotional campaign (presentation) are almost, if not more, important than the music itself (information). Lots of artists can disappoint in either presentation or information because of who they are.
For Brandy to make a full comeback, however, she needs to BRING IT on both the presentation and information fronts aka both the music videos, packaging, promo campaign and the music itself.

Brandy is an amazing artist from day one. I actually love the fact that her daugther has made her an even better person; motherhood made her grow up and mature. The best thing about her is that while everbody is trying to go with europop and all that, Brandy is staying true to herself with R&B, she’s not going there.
Full Moon was AMAZING and I agree with @RIHANNAFOREVER, Human was very consistent, one flawless album, regardless of sales. I actually love Afrodisac for the most part, (except for Who I Am, and some of the later tracks)

@loverofmusic: I liked Full Moon, but I still consider Afrodisiac one of the best contemporary R&B albums. It has a variety of themes, from relationship-focused to more introspective. The production is dynamic and layered when needed, or poignantly simple (“Say You Will” remains one of my favorite examples of scaled-back beats in favor of showing off the voice). And it had everything, from straight R&B to club beats to hip-hop to semi-trance. I was really disappointed it didn’t get the financial success it deserved. Hope everyone will try a listen, even if they don’t buy!

To be honest, I think her style and approach to singing is for those who really like voices with character and technique. Brandy is a powerhouse, a force to be reckoned with. She is a young legend. I respect her hustle. She was working hard from the age of 13/14. She is indeed the Vocal Bible. She has again risen to the top with all the projects she was involved with last year. This year will be even better. Go B-Rocka!
Brandy fans are doing WAY too much. Brandy is a great artist, but she is in no way the “vocal bible,” I mean, snap out of it already. She has a HUGE hill to climb before she can reach some sort of prominence with her music. Her last two albums were huge failures in terms of sales and to top all that off, she hasn’t redeemed herself fairly quickly and has been gone from the forefront of music for more than 4 years.

Like Janet Jackson, every few years she comes out with these desperate attempts to reclaim past glory that fail. The world stopped being interested in her over a decade ago. At least Monica can still come out with an album that gets noticed and embraced by urban music listeners, and played at black radio. Brandy is an all around washout.
