In what could possibly be a make or break moment in her career, Christina Aguilera is reportedly scheduled to open the 2011 Grammy Awards. The former chart-topper will supposedly team up with fellow vocal powerhouse Jennifer Hudson and 3 other artists at the February 13th event to pay tribute to the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin.
The stakes for this performance could not be any higher. Franklin is one of the most renowned artists of our time so there is not doubt that all eyes will be fixed on that segment.
Regardless of the current condition of her voice and the scathing backlash that she received for her performance at the Super Bowl, Aguilera would still be taking a huge risk by attempting to cover Franklin’s music. In fact, very few singers ever dare to tackle Franklin’s records because of incredible complexity of her arrangements.
If Aguilera thinks that she can get away with screaming her way through the performance like she did with her James Brown tribute in 2007 then she is sorely mistaken. She needs to be careful because this could be all that is needed for the general public to turn their backs on her for good.

For once, I agree with you. Christina’s “screaming” was justified in the James Brown tribute to his performance, because that was his style of singing as well. Now if she were covering a song by a singer with a much more subtle and controlled vocal style, then yeah that would have been completely unnecessary.
And I do also agree that she needs to go into temporary hiding and work on her voice.
THAT being said though, people should try not getting too hung up on technique, good singing/musicianship is also about being able to channel emotion, which IMO is just as important as technique.
Imagine if Trent and Sam were experts on guitar playing instead of vocals. They would criticize every guitarist who doesn’t shred.

Really, no matter how passionate or emotional the singing might be, if it’s off pitch and it sounds like the singer is struggling for their lives…who would put up with it except people with terrible music taste?
And by the way, soul singing is MUSIC based not EMOTION based, there’s such thing as soul singing because it is a style of MUSIC based on the chord progressions, the rhythm pattern, the vocal improvisation on the blues scale, etc

All that screaming in James Brown’s tribute was because he used to the same. It is regarded as one of the most spectacular performances of all time. Their opinion > yours.
Although, she was bashed for flubbing one line of the anthem, she was praised for her vocals. If anyone’s going to do an Aretha Franklin tribute, it should be Xtina or Beyonce.

WTF are you talking about? Do your research on music and you’ll find that Christina’s performance for James Brown was one of the best at the Grammys. Not only that, she sung how it was suppose to be, look at James Brown ..he too did “scream”. If anyone can tackle Whitney, Mariah, Patti LaBelle etc then it would be Christina. Just b/c she messed up the Anthem due to her being nervous (look at her rehearsal, she knew the words) does not mean she’s lacking vocally.

That wasn’t her intent either, maybe you should consider listening to Jame’s Brown “I feel Good” again and tell me that his intent was to hit the “whistle register”.
