R&B hitmaker Keri Hilson was welcomed by fans in the UK this week when she arrived in London Town in support of sophomore album ‘No Boys Allowed‘. Whilst in the country, the starlet discussed her thoughts on the controversy surrounding the visual for ‘The Way You Love Me‘ , Chris Brown and how she feels about female artists of the 90s.

Speaking directly to Soul Culture she revealed when asked about ‘One Night Stand’ collaborator Chris Brown:
“I don’t believe in undermining anyone’s creative efforts for a mistake that they make in their personal life/As long as it didn’t affect your work, I can’t fire you. That’s your PERSONAL life, I’m not going to undermine what you bring to the table; what you bring to my business – I take that same view in music. We did this with Michael Jackson; we did this with R Kelly.Chris Brown is a great artist, and I will continue to collaborate with anyone who I consider a friend.”
On the controversy she faced from ‘The Way You Love Me’:
‘“It probably deserved some criticism. Did it affect me? No. The language deserved the criticism though, absolutely.That wasn’t the version that I sang to. If you look closely, I’m not singing ‘fuck me,’ I’m singing ‘thug me’. The video I recorded was the album version – somebody decided to sync the other version with the video and put that on a site. It got 14 million views in less than a week. You can’t really be mad if people want to see something that you do, so I didn’t feel the criticism. I was just happy that people cared.”
Discussing female artists in the 90s:
“Back then, I think there was a choice. You had people that didn’t, like Toni Braxton and Whitney Houston. You had Mariah Carey, who eventually went there, but wasn’t sexual when she first started. These days there doesn’t seem to be such a broad stroke of types of artist. You’re either folk or soul, or else you’re R&B or pop – and then it’s almost like the sex has to be a part of it.”

That dumb ass video came out months ago, why are we still talking about it? Anywho, as an artist Keri has yet to really get solid footing on who or what she wants to represent. She has amazing songs, two great albums but she only puts out the s***** stuff. The only way you can draw ppl to your music is buy enticing to want to learn more about you. She has failed in doing that. So she’s going to have to work extra hard on the next album if she wants become a superstar. Right now, she’s just average and the potential to fade very quickly if she’s not careful.

Not everyone is going to sell 1 million in the first week. And huge sales don’t equal quality music. Susan Boyle, great singer, bad album. Lady Gaga, gimmick, horrible album. The Strokes, talented, sold less than 100,000 in the first week. Can we get away from first week sales and Mediabase statistics and focus on quality music?

That’s why when he announced is last tour, it was only going to be in the UK, not America. He was upset that his own country had turned against him. There weren’t that many people stanning for him before 2009. However, after he died, his stan base among people under 25 exploded. MJ wasn’t flawless, but he made good music, so does R Kelly and Chris Brown.

Anywho, I LOVED what she said about Chris! She is so right! We have looked past the personal drama of SO many other artist, including legends like MJ & R Kelly, so Chris shouldn’t be any difference! She is a true friend to CB & I really respect her for that.
I also like the fact that she didn’t apologize for the ‘TWYLM’ video! Even though I HATED it, I respect that didn’t make any excuses & just owned up to it. I don’t think it was a good look, it looked desperate and came off very slutty to me and it didn’t pay off for her at all.
I loved Keri’s album, first & second. She is a dope songwriter & has a decent voice when she sings within her range. I just don’t think she stands out enough, and her live performances usually don’t impress.
