Before it was the name of a successful talent show, ‘The Voice’ has been and still is a certain diva’s moniker – of course we’re talking about the one and only Mariah Carey. Whether on top of the charts or not, Mariah’s status as one of the greatest power-vocalist to ever grace the face of earth has never been questioned.
Mimi’s live showing of her hit ballad ‘My All’ at 1998’s Divas Live will make the object of this week’s From The Vault.
A Lamb-favorite, this live showing showcases Mrs Carey-Canon’s then new voice: a raspier, huskier one, and although a tad less powerful than before, it boasted a compelling rawness.
By the end of the performance, the soulful songbird channels her inner Dance-diva, parading on stage to the David Morales remix of the track. A refreshing flirtation with Dance we wouldn’t mind seeing her revisit with future efforts.
Speaking of what’s to come, a degree of realism is imperative. The mother-of-two’s voice had been through a lot – from the mire and back higher. Indeed, her vocals have been the subject of many heated conversations. Yet, although we highly doubt she’ll recapture the youthful horsepower she possessed during her vocal hey-day (which is only fair), we at That Grape Juice are still rooting for ol’ Mimi and anticipate more greatness from her before the curtain call.

If I recall, Frank Sinatra was dubbed as “The Voice” long before Whitney. Yup. That’s right. Oprah dubbed her as “The Voice,” but we all know who Oprah took that from.
It’s fair to refer to Mariah as “The Voice” as well as Sinatra, and Houston because just like those two, she is in the history books as one of the greatest singers of all time and her vocal talent cannot be denied. I don’t give a flying fig how much her vocals declined, and how much people despise her.

Mariah is a legend, and this performance was truly great! Her body was bangin as well.. BUTTTTTTT, Mariah was NEVER known as THE VOICE. It’s always been Whitney. Whitney was THE vocalist of the 80s, when 1990 began Mariah made a big splash, and folks were calling her the next whitney. Then in 93, Whitney came with the nuclear bomb that is The Bodyguard era, and has been known as THE VOICE ever since.
After I will always love you, every diva afterwards tried to arrange their ballads the same way with the instrumental break then the big belt. ex. Unbreak my heart, even My All.

Why are you responding directly to my post but indirecting? We don’t need to play childish games here this is merely a discussion about Mariah and Whitney, two artists I have great respect for.
First things first, you OBVIOUSLY didn’t read my previous post and only read my big one, so you can scroll up a bit and catch up with the times then come correct. I have already gave Whitney the title of “The Voice” so I don’t know where you are getting your jealousy accusations from but you can throw them out the window.
In terms of Whitney having much more influence than Mariah, I beg to differ. When I watch programs like “X Factor”, “American Idol” etc. I often find there are much more people influenced by Mariah Carey, which is just my honest observation. A lot of them are more so influenced by Mariah than they are by Whitney. There is a 2001 interview by Beyonce in which she states that when she heard “Vision of Love” she decided she had to be a singer. The footage is on YouTube. And Mariah wasn’t the first to do the whole rapper/singer collaboration thing but she plays a MASSIVE role in taking it to the level it has reached today. And look how popular that is…
I didn’t say IWALY is the only song people know of. I said it’s the one song people remember, which might not be strictly true but I am almost certain that if you went around asking people to say a hit by Whitney, that’s the one they would instantly think of. In comparison to Mariah, you would get such a broad range of answers. Some people remember her for “Hero”, some remember her for “All I Want for Christmas is You” and some would think of “We Belong Together”, amongst others.
