Paula abdul also helped with choreography with janet in the beginning too. So it’s not like she was a dancer at first. She trained to be one. LOL I thought it was funny. I like how they used the music from the Godfather. In terms of “Queen of Pop.” I think that term goes to the most popular artist art. Madonna was the Queen of Pop in the mid 80s when she was putting out hit after hit. Whitney took over that in the late 80s to early 90s and when Janet took on that title early 90s to mid 90s. I think it is just a term of the most popular female on pop charts at the current time.
I guess most people here will see Madonna as the reigning Queen & that’s fine. i respect that, but I don’t think that when it comes to this matter it has the light shed on it to give everyone a more well rounded point of view.
#1 First of all Janet’s music has always been Pop music (which has crossed over to R&B). That’s a big difference than being considered an urban artist with a few cross over pop hits. She’s just as important to MTV as Madonna & MJ were. For the record, Britney did initially state (early in her career) that Janet was an major influence (she stopped mentioning her after the superbowl until recently when she used Janet’s music in the background for her MTV tribute ad).
#2 Since the 2004 Superbowl Janet has been a blacklisted artist that doesn’t get away with the kind of stunts (like the one this post is about).
#3 Before the superbowl Janet’s was the #2 90’s artist of the decade. Madonna placed behind her (Mariah was first). Janet released much fewer albums than Madonna.
#4 Janet – with only (5) studio albums Control – All For you in comparison to Madonna’s 10(with the Evita soundtrack) still have VERY SIMILAR stats people. All the way up ’til 2004, they both had 5 #1 albums, many Hot 100 singles – Janet had (10#1’s) to Madonna’s (12) with less releases. One of these artist is working twice as hard to barely surpass the other.

You’re constantly talking about some alleged “Blacklist”. Get over that. The “blacklist” that Janet experienced was fleeting, but stans like you cling to it like the holy grail. It’s your sad security blanket. The Dixie Chicks faced a similar (if not bigger) blacklist, and their album still went on to make a dent. Madonna, herself, went through several stints where she has alienated herself from the media and suffered for it. The difference is that Madonna knows how to recover from her backlashes, and Janet doesn’t. Madonna knows how to turn tables on her naysayers and reclaim the media. Janet doesn’t. When Madonna runs into a dry commercial patch, she keeps her head and presses forward. When Janet’s professional chips are down, she comes apart at the seems; and at best hopes that the next time out her fortunes will magically improve. Madonna evolves. Janet doesn’t. She’s still trying to give us 1993 janet.-era, thinking that all will be okay if she can seduce listeners with the right sexual song, lose 60 lbs. before the album is released, and conjure up more toy story choreography like it’s still ’89. Backlist, my foot. That excuse worked for a few minutes back in 2004; almost a decade later, it doesn’t.The fact is that Janet is predictable…and from there she became boring…and from there the public has lost interest. You can only recycle “If” so many times before people say no.
I used to be a fan of hardcore Janet’s, and own every single one of her albums (even those 2 flop first and second albums that her stans love to act like don’t count against the rest of her tally; and the last 3 that stans try to blame the Superbowl on for failing to deliver) but the truth is that there hasn’t been a single song Janet has released since “All For You” 10 years ago that I have liked. Not a one. I continued to buy her albums more out of habit than fandom, simply because she represents a nostalgic part of my childhood that I haven’t detached from. I haven’t been content with her in what seems like eons, and from what I can tell, there are others who basically feel the same way; so that backlash excuse doesn’t wash. I don’t like everything Madonna does either, but one thing she’s not is predictable. I know that if I’m not feeling this current phase she’s in, she’ll give me something different the next time. Janet…doesn’t. What you see is what you get. If you didn’t like her last album, you won’t like her next one. It’s the same ol’ with her. She hardly ever changes; her last reinvention was 20 years ago. I’m bored.
But again, the whole “blacklist” thing is largely in your head because you don’t want to face the fact that it isn’t so much a “blacklist” as it is public apathy. There isn’t some corporate conspiracy to keep Janet from professionally succeeding; she just hasn’t done anything in years that the greater media and public has willingly latched onto. That would be like Madonna fans claiming the S** book is continuing to ruin Madonna’s career all these years later. Please. Walk away.
Far as tours go, your comparison is off. When Madonna was on the road with The Virgin and Who’s That Girl Tours, Janet sat. Therefore she generated “0” road revenue. Madonna didn’t tour during the same period that Janet did with The Velvet Rope Tour, so there is no comparison there. If you’re going to compare, then compare when they were both on the road at the same time. Even if The Rhythm Nation Tour outperformed Madonna’s debut Virgin Tour from 5 years earlier, the fact is that it *didn’t* outperform The Blond Ambition Tour that was happening at the same time. The Drowned World Tour outperformed The All For You Tour. And we won’t even talk about The Sticky & Sweet Tour vs. The Discipline Tour; because that’s just sad. The ONLY tour Janet did that grossed more than Madonna’s from the same period was the janet. World Tour vs. Madonna’ s The Girlie Show Tour. The former of which played 123 dates versus the latter, which played only 39. So let’s ponder that for a second, Janet plays 123 dates and only grosses $5 million more than Madonna’s 39. Come on now. But you know what? Take it. Since it means that much to you. Score one for Janet. But Madonna toppled Janet on every other side-by-side tour comparison.
You say Janet was the #2 biggest selling female artist of the 1990s. Bully, bully for Janet. Madonna was the #1 biggest selling female artist of the 1980s. Janet has never had a decade where she was the highest selling female act. Madonna has more hit songs in the US and worldwide; she has more #1 albums; she has more Grammy’s. I don’t care if it’s only one or two more; more is more. In the meantime, Madonna was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — despite the fact that her debut album was released almost a year after Janet’s. Billboard magazine called Madonna the “Most Successful Female Artist of All Time.” To Janet’s credit, she was called #2. But I bet it still pierces her competitive stans hearts that once again she was behind Madonna. Madonna is sitting on a fat $120 million dollar recording deal with Live Nation; while Janet is unsigned. Who knows what label she’ll end up at next, but wherever it is, I bet they won’t beat (or match) the deal Madonna has. And don’t even bother trying to use Janet’s past fleeting record-breaking deals to argue back; I’m talking about today.
The ONLY area that I would give Janet credit for being more successful than Madonna is in the area of film; but hell Madonna has a Golden Globe for her performance in Evita. Has Janet won any (real) industry awards for her acting?
Face it, for all your rationalizations, spins, conspiracy theories and excuses, Madonna (whose career started in 1982) has been *considerably* (and almost consistently) more successful than Janet – whose career started in what, 1973? Not only did Janet have a decade head start, but she also had name advantage.

Truth be told, I DO see more Janet in Britney than Madonna…however, it still says something when Britney herself goes through her entire career hanging on Madonna’s tits over Janet’s. And how many times has Madonna pissed off the media (this latest episode included?) Yet the media/public still usually remembers her before Janet. Blame it on the Superbowl again, I guess.
Fast forward to 2011; both women are long past their peaks/primes. Neither are going to sell that many more albums, or have that many more hits, at this stage in their careers. So realistically, the way its always been with Madonna and Janet will be the way it continues to be from now on — with Madonna being the more referenced/acknowledged star, while Janet hovers under her…with her fans bitter about it.
Well, Madonna sold 200 million albums, really 150 while Janet sold 130+ albums, so technically its only a 20 million difference or a 60 million difference if u believing that 200 million crap. Madonna has more albums out while Janet is at 10 so, to me Janet is superior cuz shes at 130 w. 10. Janet has more awards then Madonna, we all know that. The only thing that Madonna has over Janet is tour gross. Madonna is a bad b**** when it comes to tours. Both women are compeletly different, but the only reason why ppl compare both of them till this day is because their careers and achievements is equally the same and the impact they made is the same. @ Czar – I really can’t give this debate the time I wish to devote to it, but for starters I didn’t acknowledge Janet’s first 2 albums because I tied everything into when she became “Janet Jackson” and first got established. I spoke of Madonna’s releases from that standpoint too as well(she managed to establish herself early). I would do the same with MJ. He had several releases before Off the Wall and Thriller, but he wasn’t a huge solo star until then. I can even see including them if the success was moderate atleast, but it should count when they become a force. No one brings up Destiny Child’s first album, they began their story with ‘the writing’s on the wall’.
I didn’t count Janet’s ‘ Control: The Remixes’ or ‘Janet Remixed’ albums for the same reasons why I didn’t bring up Madonna’s live albums( ‘I’m Going to tell you a secret’) or her other 2 soundtracks that she was feature on with other artist (‘Whose that Girl’ , ‘I’m breathless’). My focus was their studio albums (and those treated as such) and the amount of work released after the 2 were established(that’s where the G.H. cd’s came into play). Doad & Number Ones would count as her Greatest hits disc(but that certainly doesn’t compare to the amount of them that Madge released). It’s still outnumbered anyway you look at it.
They both were very active in the 90’s and that’s why I compared their work in that decade. janet was the #2 artist of that deacade, Madonna placed further behind her. My main point that was being ignored is that Janet was blacklistes from 2004, so those albums afterwards didn’t get the promotion and radio push it deserved(and we all know this). It’s serving no point in bringing up ‘Discipline’ & the ‘RWT’ because Janet wasn’t even treated fairly. Madonna released s** books and made scandalous videos and cursed out beloved late night televsion host and it was praised (just like how this video will be). She’s not judged on the same scale as janet Jackson. It’s the same thing today with Beyonce and Gaga. It’s just not the same rules that these artist are playing by. It ‘s always been examples of this in music and that won’t change anytime soon.
With the tours it’s not easy to find an instance where they both did one at the same time ,during the same year, etc… The numbers are what they are. They both were established then and you can see the demand when these ladies stepped out to do their concerts.
I see that your mentioning how many dates were done by these women, but being that Madonna holds the record for the highest grossing one($408) , but the fact that Madge’s tour lasted much longer than most artist tours seems to get swept under the rug. Many of Madonna’s vctories are all hype and always have a very important detail that’s ignored.
In your eyes she may have appeared to evovle(which is baffling when you listen to any of her early music and see the vocal decline that started in the 90’s on her records), but it doesn’t mean Janet hasn’t. It just was done in vain (for some that didn’t really see what those era’s had to offer because they kept Janet under the radar). #Truth

And blaming it on the Superbowl? That was just a nipple slip. Madonna’s S** book days where more difficult to wash off, she was virtually panned everywhere, until she turned it around because she doesn’t have the victim mentality. Enough of this victim mentality s***.
Even if you read the reviews of Janet’s albums post All for You, all the critics are complaining is that it has tried to stick & rehash the AFY formula. How can you be a queen when your subsequent releases tries hard to be a facsimile of one of your best works?
I like Janet too (janet. to AFY era), but even Mariah would be above her (she was very instrumental in introducing to the mainstream one trend that lasts to this day: rappers in pop songs). Hell, even Whitney would be on top of Janet. I don’t think Janet is queen of anything at all.

– Your career doesn’t begin with your first big success. It begins with your first project, no matter how its ultimately received. No one who isn’t ignorant will dare claim that The Writings on the Wall is what “began” Destiny’s Child’s story; that’s just crazy talk. You don’t get to cherry pick over titles and only claim what created an impact, and became a hit — while ignoring what failed. That’s deceptive as hell. You talk about factors of Madonna’s victories being swept under the rug. What do you call glossing over Janet’s failed first albums (and making excuses for her failed last few?) It doesn’t matter if Janet’s first 2 albums didn’t catapult her to stardom, or make her a force; they are titles released to the public with her name on them — and so they are to be equally counted (and judged) amongst those that did become successful.
– I only counted Madonna’s studio albums against Janet’s studio albums when I was making my point; and of their similar number of [studio] albums — only two Janet titles outperformed Madonna titles by comparison from the same period. I didn’t even include Madonna’s hits collections, soundtracks, etc., etc. Your whole argument is heavily dependent upon the argument of Madonna’s hits and specialty albums boosting her sales…but the truth is that even if you only counted her studio albums against Janet’s studio albums, Madonna still wins. Overall, Madonna’s studio albums have outsold Janet’s. However, I will say this: Madonna cannot be faulted for working and releasing a lot of product — most of which sells. If she can continually release greatest hits albums that sell healthily, then so be it, and if Janet’s tally is significantly lower because she doesn’t have as many collections and soundtracks on the market as Madonna, then that ain’t Madonna’s fault. Sales are sales. Nobody stopped Janet from maximizing her catalog the way Madonna does. It doesn’t make Janet’s sales more earnest or sincere.
– Don’t pretend the public and media reaction to Madonna’s controversies have been accommodating or dismissive. Madonna got slaughtered for her S** book and after she went on Letterman and swore up a storm. It wasn’t celebrated. No one thought it was cute. The criticism was harsh and bitter…and I don’t think Janet has ever been as professionally or publicly maligned as Madonna has on her worst days, so saying that Madonna isn’t judged as critically is a crock of s***. Madonna has been every bit as judged and criticized as Janet was during that Superbowl episode. Her American Life was “blacklisted” from radio too. Janet doesn’t. Using the Superbowl to excuse the failures of things that came out years later is pitiful and doesn’t wash. It wasn’t any “blacklisting” that caused those albums, and that Rock Witchu tour, to fail…it was the publics general disinterest. The Superbowl is just your scapegoat for not facing the the record and ticket buying public wasn’t interested.
– Madonna adding more legs to her Sticky & Sweet Tour in no way neutralizes, lessens or brings a colder perspective to its success. The demand was there for more shows, and so more were added — plain and simple. And they all sold out. Supply and demand is the name of the game, and in the end she came away with the most successful tour for a solo artist — ever. Nothing nefarious or sneaky about it. No one had to buy those tickets. That would be like me saying that at her peak, the janet. and Rhythm Nation albums only sold as much as they did because Janet kept on releasing an overabundance of singles. Who the hell cares? The bottom line is what the profit; not the why or the how.
– No it’s not baffling to say that Madonna continues to evolve. Every phase/era of Madonna’s music/overall career is different from the last one. Madonna continues to move forward and almost never does same thing twice; that’s called evolving. And as far as vocal decline goes…ha…people who live in glass houses, my friend. Being a Janet enthusiast, you are in **no** position to condescend any other singers vocal ability with her name in the same breath. That’s all I’m going to say about that.

@ Czar – By all means no one is stating that ANY recordings done by an artist can be so insignificant that it’s not considered to be a part of their discography. It’s quite juvenile to expect that people would pretend that the unfamilar works don’t exist. I’m just stating that the first record that garner substantial success unofficially marks that artist entrance into the music industry. That’s when their recognized and when they become relevant. Artist that don’t reach this level arent established yet. That was the case with Janet’s status prior to Control. It’s the case with many great artist that do not instantly become mega – superstars.
Yes, Madonna willingly choose to maximize her catalog with frequent releases and Janet didn’t churn out albums as often as Madge did. Still, what I think is noteworthy was that their impact was about the same. That says alot about Janet , especially when she’s surpassed her rival Madonna in some areas while having less to build on. The fact stands that Madonna wasn’t ultra successful during the 90’s(Janet was) and that’s why Janet managed to pulled ahead of her and become more accomplished during that era. It is certainly the other way around in this last decade. A loss would be a loss, but I know that it’s not that simple. Call it silly excuses, call it being pressed, whatever – but I call it the truth(because that’s what it is). Some people can’t afford to have their image tarnished – their not granted the same opportunities to recover. We all know that there are some artist that can do no wrong. I’m stopping here… That’s just not a debate.

She’s the queen because she was innovative, ground breaking and pushed envelopes like no other. She paved the way for many of todays pop stars and they all credit her as their inspiration. Gaga included!! Janet is a great performer with some great music but she never really pushed envelopes the way Madonna did or was considered groundbreaking… She just did her thing and people loved her for it. But yeah… MADONNA IS THE QUEEN ALL THE WAY!!!
