Ashanti Covers Whitney Houston

Published: Saturday 22nd Oct 2011 by David

Ahead of the release of her new single ‘No Good‘, Ashanti treated fans to a sneak peek of what they can expect from her voice by joining forces with legendary producer David Foster onstage to put her lungs to the ultimate test.

Yes, last night in honor of Pop legend Whitney Houston -Ms. Douglas covered the songs ‘I Will Always Love You‘ and ‘I Have Nothing’ live.

See how she did below…

Delightful.

Though she struggled to hit the necessary notes in some parts of the performance,  Ashanti has proven her worth as a worthwhile vocalist once again.

Skilled and almost flawless in delivery, this performance will be sure to silence those who have in the past made the mistake of equating her more recent shortcomings with her talent.

Job well done!

I never knew she could sing like this im actually impressed

  2. Shane October 22, 2011

People should know by now you should NEVER cover one of Whitney’s signature songs! Especially Ashanti with her no singing behind! lol

I Have nothing…. was… meh. IWALY – no not at all. STOP IT! Ashanti this ain’t for you.

  4. The-Truth October 22, 2011

Well she sings it a heck of a lot better than Whitney can now. We are living in the present and Whitney aint NEVER doing it in 2011

Not bad. She did the first one justice. A little pitchy on the second but by no means bad.

She can sing… But not Whitney songs.

SOUNDS BETTER THAN WHITNEY TODAY. SAD, SHOWS HOW FAR THE CRACK HEAD HAS FALLEN FROM MLIYL ERA WHEN ASHANTI DOES BETTER. SHE SOUNDS LIKE MARIAH. SMH.

WOW, I’M MORE SURPRISED BY THE EMPTY SEATS. ACTUALLY NOT… LOL.

You know Whitney is a hard person to mimic! I’m not impressed with either rendition! She needs to stick to singing osngs in her range & depth. Like my song ‘Baby”! In fact she needs to mimic her entire 1st CD! It was amazing!

  11. Todd October 22, 2011

She sound good on i have nothing, but she’s really has no control and its sad she’s a veteran now in the game get some damn vocal lessons…….

This was karaoke at its finest….. she gave me Jordin Sparks. Where was Deborah C**, Shanice or Heather Headley at? Surely they would have delivered better renditions than this s***.

  14. The Naked Truth October 22, 2011

That actually sounded SOLID!!! She did more justice to the first than the second, but one would have to be CRAZY to not consider her a Vocalist now sounding that good covering Whitney. She can no longer be grouped with the Ciara’s & JLo’s cause she can CLEARLY sing circles around them!

Whitney can’t those high notes anymore – I guess that’s what gave Ashanti the courage to sing her songs.

  18. Casual October 22, 2011

Obviously, Ashanti is not used to using her voice like this, so some of her notes were wobbly and uneven.

But a slight key adjustment might have made all the difference in the world. Sounds like she was singing most of the power notes right at her presagio (transition point between the natural voice and falsetto), which is awkward and hard to do. She should have slightly re-worked the vocal arrangment and made this her own, and she should NOT have attempted Whitney’s original key.

    All considered, not too bad.

  24. Angelique October 22, 2011

Ashanti is a good songwriter, and she has decent songs, but she received singing lessons to late in her career. If she would’ve did this before the peak of her career, she probably wouldn’t have faded into the background like she has. The first cover was okay at best, but the second was actually good.

  29. I’ma have to send her to her maker October 22, 2011

Plz. Both renditions were terrible. Esp the last one. She should not be singing whitney songs. Who cares if whitney can’t sing anymore. This paled in comparison to Whitney and even failed on its own. Ashanti sounded strained and out of breath and her voice on the big belts were painful to hear. She needs to stay out of Whitney’s zone because that’s too rarefied an atmosphere for her to exist in. This performance has American Idol Wannabe written all over it!

@Alex PLZ. Beyonce can sing circles around ashanti. Ashanti’s tone is horrible and whitney is WAY out of her league during her prime with these songs.

  69. Genuine1 October 22, 2011

Ashanti voice is best when she sings soft, her tone can be appreaciated. She has no resonance in her lower register, and the resonance that she does have when she sings high and strong doesnt do her any justice because her tone sounds horrible when she sings in that register.. so its best if she sings soft and use a lot more falsettto.. cuz she sounds a mess even tho she hitting the notes!

  70. VA STAND UP!!! October 23, 2011

Damn! She did that! I think it’s safe to say this was a hell of a lot better than anyone thought she could ever do. I always knew Ashanti had vocal ability because of her albums, it’s just that she failed to ever show it live! This was probably ber best live vocal performance she’s ever given. I think this might finally silence some of her critics, a.k.a haters.

Of course it’s not as good as Whitney’s original version in her prime, but we all know that Whitney herself can’t even sing like this anymore. Ashanti definitely held her own and she should be given her props! But I still see some of them REFUSING to give props!

Anywho, I am looking forward to hearing new music from her now. This performance let me know that she has at least maintained her vocal ability and even worked on it! It will be interesting see what type of new material she comes up and if she can make any sort of a real comeback.

I STILL bump her first album to this day! That’s my s***!

    Good Luck Shanti!

  71. Dave October 23, 2011

She did ok. I feel y’all are stretching this far beyond what it is. Nothing of this was flawlessly. Her notes endeded short, & she seemed out of breath, & had not control. She didn’t have the mellow tone or the lower register to sustaining the opening notes of “I Have Nothing.” It was just a mess to me. This isn’t even great for her own standards. I think people are stretching her ability to sing “Over the Rainbow” to constitute her being a better vocalist. She’s not. She just learned how to sing that one song very well. Girl can hit notes, but as far as being a vocalist, no. I’d stop at a singer.

  72. credits October 23, 2011

Contrary to Popular belief, Aaliyah was a very underrated vocalist. At the tender age of 14, Aaliyah had mastered Her head and lower register with ease and had the ability to transition between these registers simutanelously, a skill that takes alot of practice and dedication to master. Aaliyah had an amazing tone, one of the best head voices of her time, impressive range, and not to mention a husky lower register that’s VERY underrated. While not being a powerhouse vocalist, Aaliyah’s chest voice had enough power to do a ballad justice. Remeber, that most of these clips Aaliyah was a TEENAGER, and in her short career she had shown alot of potential to be a prime vocalist if she had lived past the age of 22.

With all due respect, you need to watch more Aaliyah performances. She wasn’t the most consistent vocalist, but she was amazing, especially in her ‘The One I Gave My Heart To’ performances. And her vocals were only getting better in the ‘Aaliyah’ era in 2001.And please give me the name of ONE artist that could sing, dance hip-hop and interract with the crowd at the same time.Aaliyah was doing it all simultaneously!!

Now when it comes to “filling the spot”, I understand that there are always new artists in the industry, but it’s a fact that the labels wanted someone new to have Aaliyah’s appeal.Aaliyah was selling albums all over the world (8 millions per album), she was doing high profile campaigns (Hilfiger), high budget movies and she was just about to take over, so it doesn’t make sense to say that the labels didn’t strive for someone new to capitalize on that 😉

    Anyway… 😎

NOT that bad as I expected. yeah, she’s got some voice but not enough for this type of songs.
better than whitney now – co-sign.

in any case, the true and overwhelming performance of the song always takes more than just a strong voice and taking the right notes.

  86. Diane October 23, 2011

The world is always looking for the next Whitney Houston. This proves she is the standard and owns the “Legend” title. No one has taken her spot yet, even after her “new” voice and almost 10 years out of the spotlight.

  87. Mari (RIP Dwayne McDuffie + Amy Winehouse +Steve Jobs) October 23, 2011

    @Army of a Queen

Aaliyah was a lot like Britney Spears. Neither artists are stellar vocalists nor did they write hits, but they were watchable and good performers that could sell the material they were given. Aaliyah’s death opened doors for quite a few people, namely Ashanti and the fashion designer Rachel Roy, who Damon Dash wouldn’t have married and financed had Aaliyah not passed, because even though Roy and Dash had a child together, Aaliyah was his fiancee.

With all due respect, Aaliyah would have had a hard time competing with Beyonce because Bey is ten times the vocalist “Baby Girl” was, and it’s not like Bey can’t dance. Ciara would’ve given Aaliyah a run for her money in the dance department, and Rihanna would’ve finished her off with her mainstream pop sound and killer style.

You damn haters can say what you want despite Whitney’s recent troubles and her voice may not be the same, but lets get this straight there will NEVER EVER & I MEAN EVER BE ANOTHER! She set the bars for these new women and she will always be considered as such. No other female vocalist and singer (besides Michael Jackson) has made such an impact on music. I suggest you young ones go and do your homework! No auto-tune, no getting naked, just straight real and raw singing.

P.S.- Whitney today still sounds better than half these bi$ches in the game so lets not go there!

    @MARI
Ok, everyone is entitled to an opinion, but did you really NEED to type that last paragraph??HONESTLY??I just hate it when people bring up stupid comparisons, especially when these comparisons are in the form of inaccurate speculation about what WOULD have happened if a person HADN’T died.Rihanna would finish AALIYAH off??In which parallel universe would that happen?Rihanna needed the urban audience to start her career before crossing over and the urban audience was focused on Aaliyah from 1994 to 2001.Ciara would slay Aaliyah in the dancing department??You need to get off of that blog and watch the ‘More Than A Woman’ video clip or the ‘Are You That Somebody’ video clip.Aaliyah was versatile, agile and incredibly talented as a dancer.

Now, the Beyonce comparison is the most heavily speculated.I could just make an essay to dismiss this nonsense, but all I’m going to say is that Beyonce was covering Aaliyah’s songs while being a member of a band.Beyonce and Aaliyah never competed in the industry, so the comparison is invalid.

Now, here’s hoping that the Aaliyah vs. current successful artist thing will stop…

For effort for someone who has been lambasted for her lack of vocal ability, I give her an A+. It takes serious ovaries to even think of doing any song by ‘The Voice” especially when you know people don’t take you seriously as a singer. However, for effort, i give her a D+. These songs are simply out of her vocal league. She doesn’t have the instrument to pull them off. Moreover, when people cover Mariah, Whitney, & Celine they focus too much on the big notes and miss the emotion, interpretation, and delivery of the song. If she was going to attempt this she should’ve “youtubed” the various ways Whitney has done it live (you cannot compete with a studio vocal) or just re-tooled the song all together to fit her voice. I felt like she was shouting the last chorus of IWALY and her transitions between belt and head voice were sloppy. If you’re going to do the Vocal Trinity, then do songs that are less known or one that are closer to your vocal capabilities. An Exhale (Shoop Shoop), Miracle, or Try It On My Own would’ve probably suited her better. I blame David Foster for this. He is forever dragging these 2 songs out and filling the spotlight with inferior singers. He’s mad b/c Whitney wasn’t made or broken by those 2 songs which means that she doesn’t have to show up everyplace that has a mic to sing them. He needs her; he can’t get her, so he wastes his time and other singers’ credibility with these less than decent American Idol audition performances.

@That simple minded Person I Meant aaliyah Was A URBAN ICON & People Needed To REPLACE her ! & You Must Have Been Living Under A Rock Because Ciara is The NUMBER 1 aaliyah Swaggajacker !

    @Mari

Aaliyah’s Vocals Were 10x Better Than Britney’s, Many People Don’t Hear The Songs Were Aaliyah Belts ie. (The One I Gave My Heart To) Or Hit Very Low Notes That I Dont Even See Artists of Today Try To Hit ! Yes Beyonce Is A Better Vocalists Today but Back in The Day She Was Ok & Her Vocals Have TREMENDOUSLY Improveed Just Like Aaliyah’s Would Have as Well, Sometimes when i hear Bey Sing I Feel She Is REACHING In Ranges That Just arent NATURALLY hers ie. (Ave Maria) Like Aaliyah’s Ave Maria At 14 Sounded Better & more Natural Than Beyonce At 27 & i never Said Bey Couldnt Dance But Do Underrate Aaliyah her dancing would Have Advanced With Time Just like Bey. But I Mean Aaliyah Could ACT Very Well , They were Practically throwing Scripts At her That would Definitely Her Give Bey a Run For Her Money

Now to Ciara I think Ciara Would Be Look As The aaliyah Swaagajacker ie NICKI MINAJ Or The Aaliyah Emulator ie. CHRIS BROWN & aaliyah Sounds WAY Better Than Ci Ci

Now On Rihanna Lmfaoooo Rih Rih is A S** Symbol Aaliyah Was A S** Symbol With Morals & her s** appeal Wasnt Forced Like Rih Rih But aaliyah Would Still have The Urban Market Under Her Thumb I Mean why Cant Aaliyah survive With all These Females there Is ENOUGH Spot Light For everyone

  95. Army Of Queen A (Aaliyah) & Queen Bee (Lil Kim) >>>>>>>> Your Fave ! October 23, 2011

@ASAP Co-sign ! I Mean people Dont Know That Aaliyah Gave Helped DC For Example The Romeo Must Die Sound Track Aaliyah Chose DC To Be On It Her & Bey Would Be In FRIENDLY Competition

  96. Vegas girl October 23, 2011

She should have just stopped after the first little snippet. She sounded good. Then she did ” I will always”…..oh boy!

On that song she became the Ashanti I remembered and that was disappointing because she showed some growth on the first song.

  97. TheMan4U October 23, 2011

once again we all know whitney is the BENCHMARK for vocalist and im proud of ashanti she did a decent job

  98. Robier October 23, 2011

Uhmmmm NO NO STAY IN YOUR LANE !!!! THIS WAS CLEARLY TOO MUCH FOR HER

  99. antertain October 23, 2011

Would be good if she sung through her words more during verse and chorus.
Her vocal has improved over the years especially live.

Don’t think her tone suits Whitney songs but she did some nice notes.
Was a fight and struggle for most of 2nd song.

  100. Wesley October 23, 2011

Ummmmm…. Wow Ashanti did great I’m shocked i mean she struggled a lil but who doesn’t struggle on a whitney song,… I give her credit she did good!!!!!!!

  101. 3dghy October 23, 2011

Flawless!!…i luved it..stop hating…go ashanti!!!..that was probably one of her best live performances to date!!!

  102. Wesley October 23, 2011

    I luved it!

  103. Princess P. October 23, 2011

ATTENTION ALL SINGERS: PLEASE BE AWARE!!

Whitney Houston is a legendary vocalist. The best voice this world has ever heard. “I Will Always Love You” and “I Have Nothing” are two of her signature songs. NO ONE, and I mean, NO ONE, can sing these songs like Whitney Houston. STOP TRYING!!!

Now, Ashanti has a nice voice and she should stick to songs that elevate her strengths and weaknesses.

  104. danny b October 23, 2011

I cant believe yall thought this was stunning. She was ALL. OVER. THE. PLACE. I guess you are the same people that keep buy 3 copies of every Katy Perry album and keep giving Rihanna number ones.

    *shrugs*

  105. Mari (RIP Dwayne McDuffie + Amy Winehouse +Steve Jobs) October 23, 2011

@ ASAP (As Sincere As Possible)

So, it’s ok for you to speculate that Aaliyah’s career wouldn’t have been impacted by new competitors, but it’s not ok for me to suggest otherwise? No, I stand by that second paragraph. I mean really, you want me to sit here and pretend that Aaliyah was more talented than Beyonce? Sorry, no. I won’t do that. All the “queens” have to maintain their position by fending off challengers to the crown. When someone comes along that does what you do, but better, they usually win. Beyonce is a better singer and performer than Aaliyah. The reason why Beyonce has maintained her place is because absolutely no-one has come for her and what she brings to the table. I love Rihanna to death, but Beyonce is the superior singer/performer. She just is, and really though, what reason is there to believe that Beyonce wouldn’t have sucked most of, if not, all the oxygen out of the Aaliyah’s career the way she did to every other R&B/Urban chick from Ashanti to Brandy? What, Aaliyah was just that special?

  106. Mari (RIP Dwayne McDuffie + Amy Winehouse +Steve Jobs) October 23, 2011

    @ASAP

As for Rihanna, she came into the game as a junior Bey from Barbados. That has a lot to do with how she found appeal in the urban market. She doesn’t resemble Aaliyah in the least, and starting out as a rip-off Beyonce didn’t hurt her one bit. Aaliyah def had style, but Aaliyah’s style cred never had an impact beyond the urban market, and the exact opposite can be said about Rihanna. And need I remind you which artist was scoring bigger hits US/WW and got a cosmetics contract with only 2 years in the game.

And “More than a woman” video? That’s supposed to make me believe that Aaliyah was a better dancer than Ciara? Don’t make me laugh. “Get Up”choreo >>>> “More than a Woman” choreo. Ciara is the best female dancing recording artist to come down the pike since Janet. End of.

Honestly, I think everyone has a tendency to over rhapsodize about Aaliyah since her tragic passing to the point where it’s almost blasphemous to say any critical about her or speculate about what might have been, but there’s nothing wrong about such speculation. It’s just that, speculation.

  107. Tiff October 23, 2011

She did well considering how bad her singing is live. It was pretty solid for her. Not great, but good. SHe still needs some improvement as a performer.

  108. anonymous October 23, 2011

To be honest, you guys are going in HARD on Ashanti as if she sounds like Rihanna or Britney. She sounds 10 times better than these pop artists that sing live. She did better than what expected. good job Ashanti!!!

  109. ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) October 24, 2011

You need to stop deleting my comment!!

  110. ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) October 24, 2011

@MARI I didn’t speculate her career would be huge.I said that YOU cannot speculate otherwise because it’s dumb.NOONE can be sure what would have happened. You are trying to compare Aaliyah to Rihanna??GIRL, when Aaliyah sold 7 million albums worldwide with an old school rhythm and blues/hip hop/soul album, Rihanna was 4 years old watching TV and chilling under the coconut trees, so don’t even. And Ciara was a better dancer than Aaliyah??PLEASE!If you read my comments on the Ciara posts, you’ll see that I love her too, but you’re reaching.Aaliyah was versatile, flexible and trained. She was effortless.Ciara is an amazing HIP HOP dancer, Aaliyah (especially in the video that you’re mocking) showcased a mixture of different styles and moves that she pulled off with no exception.Probably, in your book amazing dancer = intense dancer, exactly like some ignorant people think that great vocalists = loud vocalists that yell and scream.

  111. SEAN October 24, 2011

DISGRACEFUL! BLASPHEMOUS! THAT WOMAN NEEDS TO CRAWL BACK UNDER THE ROCK FROM WHICH SHE SLITHERED OUT FROM. SHE CAN’T SING TO SAVE HER LIFE.

  112. ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) October 24, 2011

Now again about the Beyonce comparison, this is as stupid as the other 2.I will accept this one because Beyonce had as much potential and star quality as Aaliyah, but it’s still a stupid comparison.Did Aaliyah and Beyonce EVER compete as solo acts??NO!Beyonce made her move AFTER Aaliyah’s passing, so nobody knows what WOULD have happened if she hadn’t died.Maybe Beyonce would prevail or maybe she would never dare to step away from DC.NOONE can be sure and that includes you and myself.NOONE.So, you’re trying to make your assumptions out to be FACTS and it doesn’t make as much sense as me simply telling you that NOBODY knows.

And of course throughout your responses, you’re constantly discrediting Aaliyah, which leads me to think that you have no idea about how HUGE she was.Rihanna’s style was superior??PLEASE!!How can you compare Aaliyah’s 2001 style to Rihanna’s 2011 style. If you compare 2001 to 2011 of course the fashion of 2001 will seem dated and boring, but Aaliyah’s clothes were cutting edge and innovative. She was a trendsetter. And again, it’s proven that all kinds of comparisons are pointless and invalid.

  113. ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) October 24, 2011

And the fact that she died is NOT the reason why she’s getting credit. The reason why she’s getting credit is because she’s one of the incredibly few mainstream stars who deserve it.She was a cultural icon and a musical inspiration for a HUGE audience which was ruling the mainstream media from 1998 to 2004 (the urban audience which you’re underestimating too).Just go check Aaliyah’s chart statistics and her certifications to understand her impact and also go watch some videos of a huge crowd holding her pictures while crying during her memorial service.

  114. ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) October 24, 2011

After changing my gravatar and dividing my comment into 3 seperate posts, I FINALLY was able to post the damn thing I’ve been trying to say for AGES!!The 3 posts with the green gravatars are all for @MARI, btw, in order to avoid any misunderstanding 😉
