Christina Aguilera Hires New Vocal Coach For Forthcoming LP

Published: Tuesday 4th Oct 2011 by Sam

To undermine Christina Aguilera‘s vocal ability, would be akin to comparing Rihanna’s to Mariah’s.

However, as the years have gone on (taking her relevancy with it), it’s quickly become apparent that years of bad technique have shaved away some of the intricate qualities of a voice we’ve known and loved for the better part of 12 years.

Yet, as the age old adage goes: it’s not over, till it’s over. A fact Aguilera’s popularity on NBC’s ‘The Voice‘ and recent chart-topping success with Maroon 5 proves.

As such, capitalising on her rediscovered relevance, the 30 year old is back in the studio recording what essentially needs to be the comeback of comebacks. So as to ensure she’s in tip-top form, it is being reported the mother of one has enlisted the services of a new vocal coach.

Full story below…

According to the Examiner, the ‘Dirrty’ singer has taken on renown vocal coach Seth Riggs, who is being tasked with helping the star “scale back” on the over-singing and “ya, ya, ya” runs. Shifting focus, instead, to polishing her higher and lower registers.

Another name signed on to contribute in some form to the as yet untitled project is producer William Orbit (who will hit the studio with Aguilera once he wraps work on Madonna‘s new record). Meanwhile hitmaker Timbaland recently caught the attention of many when he publicly tweeted Xtina – revealing that he ‘had something for her’.

——————————

Given the mixture of the stakes (see: prior flops) and her revitalised popularity, this new Xtina project is shaping up to be one to watch. Indeed, if executed correctly – and by that I mean, right material, solid release window i.e. during the next season of ‘The Voice’ – it could be the comeback her career is so thirsty for.

That said, talk of “scaling her back” both warms and worries me. For, with the industry sway generally favouring simple hooks, melodies, and ultimately voices (see: Ke$ha, Rihanna, and co), reeling her talent back in may be the only viable way to strike it big again. However, as one of those who loves his Xtina loud, screaming, and shamelessly diva, it’s a hard, yet necessary pill to swallow. For, as with most competitive arenas, the best success (and longevity) in music comes to those who know how to play the game. A point well demonstrated by Beyonce, who has a great ear for when to keep it simple, and radio-friendly, and when to let rip and blow wigs off (more often than not, live). I guess the very public humbling of Christina over the last year, has forced her onto a simlilar path – as opposed to simply doing as she pleases vocally. Will it pay off, though? Only time will tell.

so happy for christina, i am not a fan but i think i will be rooting for her. Happy that despite her vocal abilities which is great, she can still visit a vocal coach unlike those their fans lie to on a daily basis. I love artist who find ways to improve and I wish her all the best. One of the legends of our generation. There a just a few.
Go Christina she will well be known for her voice in years/decads to come.

Seth Riggs is a great vocal coach and he has great techniques. Hopefully he will teach how to use her voice more healthily AND sound it too.

  7. LegendTina The Goddess Of Music October 4, 2011

Flop when her name is part of a #1 on the BB singles chart out right now?!

After 12years in this music industry! Irrelevant? Getting paid to perform for 1 million private gigs? Being a headliner? I mean! F***

  8. TruthTeller October 4, 2011

Judging by 4CLOSURE numbers, Beyawnce is NOT an example to follow.

  9. corey October 4, 2011

you make it seem like as if she’s a string of flop albums or something. bionic was her only flop album.

  10. corey October 4, 2011

plus this is from the examiner which i wouldn’t exactly call a credible news source. this is the same person who reported her to be working with william orbit, which he said was false.

  11. alalalala October 4, 2011

YASSS!! The f***** Queen! Ive wanted X to get coaching for a while now!!!

  14. ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) October 4, 2011

    YEEEEEEESSSSSSSS

This is what I’ve been waiting for in her entire career. She has a breathtaking tone, an amazing ability to evoke emotion in her voice and an excellent knowledge about where to put adlibs and runs to make it interesting. All that she’s been missing is hardcore coaching!!!NO more off-pitch notes and better technique!!!She was already THE voice of the generation, but now she’s going to take it to the next level.

I don’t want to be cheesy, but I’m SOOOO proud of her!!!She let her ego go and now she’ll become an even more brilliant artist!!!

  15. ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) October 4, 2011

Thanks for the post @Sam 🙂

  16. i&i(yardie) October 4, 2011

Great for Christina. She already has a great voice but saw the need for a vocal coach. I wish some other “singers” would take notes

I’m not a Big Fan of Christina, but I Respect her for her Amazing Voice and I wish her the Success she deserves. In my Book she is comparable to Whitney Houston, she does have that Big Voice that’s worth talking abt….while Leona Lewis is comparable to Mariah Carey, Lady Gaga to Madonna, Ciara to Janet, Beyonce to MJ and we’re yet to see another Singer with a unique voice as Toni Braxton<—my fave Singer.. 🙂

  19. bey’knight October 4, 2011

a fan of her music not so much her character but im so rooting for her… about 2 years ago i wrote an article comparing her and Britney on every level. Xtina is one of those who has genuine raw passion for her craft. my whole new found respect for her is on another level for taking this bold step if only that lazy wayward girl would do the same but why she should have to, there are people dumb enough to buy ticket to go see her live … and no im not talkin about Britney.

  20. ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) October 4, 2011

@BEY’KNIGHT I’d love to see that article tbh.Is it posted online?Or was it just something you did for school/college?

  21. Teflon Boy October 4, 2011

Anyone with any knowledge of the human voice can attest to the benefits of vocal coaching. On an average to good singer the results can result in something at least listenable…, but on a singer already blessed with a naturally great aptitude the benefits are really limitless. Make no mistake, Mariah Carey at her peak was the result of a hardcore voice care regime, that once allowed to slip started the steady decline into what we know has come to be a pretty unreliable instrument. While I can never abide haters rearing their heads to shout nonsense statements like ‘Xtina can’t sing!’, one can only be excited at the prospect of proper technique being brought back into Christina’s discipline because in an attempt to add grit and grain to her texture (which I’m sure was intentional) she has definitely sacrificed the brightness of her belts and the fullness of her tone…, while many rightfully claim Christina to be head and shoulders above the rest in terms of vocal ability, her instrument has become dull in recent times and that can’t be denied.

  22. ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) October 4, 2011

    Oh, btw…
“However, as one of those who loves his Xtina loud, screaming, and shamelessly diva, it’s a hard, yet necessary pill to swallow. ”
    _______________________________________________________________
Don’t worry about that.Knowing Christina, she’ll still be flashy and ready to show off and her voice is loud even when she has a cold so that element will never go away. And she’ll still be a shameless VOCAL diva, just with more training 😉 It doesn’t get any better than that 😀 Imagine the last note on ‘It’s A Man’s World’ where Christina was “loud, screaming and shamelessly diva”, but this time around with correct voice placing and correct technique 😉 And of course she’s going to ignore the vocal coach sometimes when she wants to REALLY show off, so there aren’t going to be many changes in the good stuff. The only change will be the few mediocre or even bad performances, like the infamous Superbowl. She can still be loud and expressive, but she will avoid all those vocal faux pas

  23. THE UNIVERSITY OF GAGA October 4, 2011

    Thank Gawd…..

  24. ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) October 4, 2011

@TEFLON BOY She hasn’t sacrificed anything 😎 She was just letting her vocals slip during ‘Bionic’, but now with a vocal coach, her vocal clarity and extensive range will be right back. She’s 30 years old, it is impossible for her to actually LOSE some of her ability completely. She just didn’t train enough to show that ability, but that doesn’t mean she lost it.It’s still there and the vocal coach will bring it back 😉

  25. antertain October 4, 2011

I don’t think they will over scale back on the riffs and yelling (Divaisms) to much but just refine it so its perfectly suited for the songs she makes.

Sometimes it did feel and sound like her vocal chords wanted to pop out her throat and escape to the floor so this is a ideal approach she is taking to also protect her voice and give it more longevity.

  26. Curtwill October 4, 2011

This could be the best decision she has made in a long time with her career. She has always been so stubborned about this, I guess some soul searching about her career and life has helped to make the difference. Good for her. Now hopefully, this will take her music to the next level. She has all the potential in the world, she just has to realize it.

  27. enzod October 4, 2011

i definitely think this will help her out alot. part of what ruins her live performances is the overdoing it. the happy medium she had in her early career (especially right before stripped) is what made me love her voice. but ppl criticized her for toning it down on bionic and saying she wasn’t using her voice. still excited to see what happens. i hope they re book her to sing the anthem at the next superbowl. i love redemption.

  28. Nae October 4, 2011

YAS! I’ve been saying all this time her voice would be perfect, if she had a different technique. I have an amazing feeling about this era. My girl will slay 🙂

  29. MissImpartial October 4, 2011

I prefer Beyonce’s voice over her when it comes to live performances. I loved her vocals on the Christina Aguilera album which was her first. I think that was one of the best pop albums ever. Her voice is great when she used correctly.

  30. SHESDUMB IS TIRED OF THE BS October 4, 2011

I THINK SHE NEEDS ELP REMEMBERING LYRICS THAN JUST GETTING HELP VOCALLY.WELL NEVER MIND, SHE NEEDS TO LEARN HOW TO CONTROL HER VOICE SO GOOD FOR HER.

  31. SCARECROW October 4, 2011

What does she need a vocal coach for, after all these years of singing professionally? Oh well, I guess its the shouting and screaming like a so-called kingqueen. Controlling ur voice is key.

  32. KAT DELUNA FAN October 4, 2011

l will always be here for my latina girls.Xtina is more talented than 3 or 4 singers out there put together.

    keep it up

  33. bob October 4, 2011

I love her but other than when shes yelling I don’t feel any versatility or anything special :/

  34. Bey Fan… October 4, 2011

Never understood how artist like Christina and Beyonce knew the importance of vocal coaching , while other artist whose voices aren’t that good do nothing.

  35. Teflon Boy October 4, 2011

@ASAP (AS SINCERE AS POSSIBLE)…, I didn’t mean it was gone for good just that by not keeping up with her training she ‘temporarily’ sacrificed the fullness of her skills

  36. bey’knight October 4, 2011

    @ASAP

ah thanks, ppreciate the interest, nah it’s neither i was just caught up in the moment. it was sparked by a Christina vs Britney marathon on a music channel. i’m a writer so i did a lil research and put it all into my own lil gumbo. i saved on my pc back with no harddrive, the pc broke down and needless my files went BOOF

    lesson learnt lol

  37. bey’knight October 4, 2011

    @Bey Fan…

u think they care? some of them are here for the hits, fame, and gift bags. didnt the likes of Kim K and Paris Hilton go into the studio as well? smh

besides, vocal coaches arent miracle workers, u figure

  38. irene46 October 4, 2011

here’s tgj throwing shade by holding christina to a higher standard than other artists. setting the bar really high for her is really setting her up for failure.

her performances at the super bowl and the aretha tribute were phenomenal even with the missteps. she performed on cnn’s tribute to ‘heroes’ show. her movie was successful, the burlesque movie soundtrack which 8 of 10 numbers are hers, has been on billboard for over 40 weeks. her tv show ‘the voice’ is highly rated. her feature with maroon 5 ‘moves like jagger’ has been in the # 1 spot for 4 weeks. and she’s been asked to perform in canada at the michael jackson concert. this is irrelevancy?!

jlo is still considered a success even though her albums have not moved huge numbers for years and several of her movies were flops (her movie ‘gili’ was one of the lowest profit making movies in history) tgj hasn’t referred to her as “irrelevant”.

i admire christina for pushing on in spite of constantly being overwhelmed with media hatefulness and shade to keep her down. she’s truly a ‘fight’er’!!

  39. irene46 October 4, 2011

    @ asap…

i checked out the britney performances like you suggested and left a comment about it on the last tgj britney post. i’ll concede she wasn’t a slouch in the dance department and had wonderful stage presence. ‘cough, cough’! choked on a crow feather!!!

btw, there was nothing bad about christina’s super bowl performance. she sounded great. she sang the words wrong but she kept it professional and didn’t miss a beat!

  40. FlopJuice October 4, 2011

“For, with the industry sway generally favouring simple hooks, melodies, and ultimately voices (see: Ke$ha, Rihanna, and co), reeling her talent back in may be the only viable way to strike it big again.”

This article is out of reality. –> WHAT ABOUT ADELE????? Adele is a good sign that Christina can comeback with quality music!!!

  41. THEMAN October 4, 2011

Sam shut up, that electro crap is starting to fade. She’ll make a great album.

  42. Hearing Perfection October 4, 2011

Wow this is well written. As a Christina fan I am so pleased to hear this as well. The comment about Beyonce is very true, and while I don’t think she’s the best singer she is a solid one that gives want the public wants but still proves herself vocally when the time is right. I have noticed Christina has started to over sing more regularly and I have often wondered why she has never hired a vocal coach to refine her instrument. I mean she is already in my opinion the best singer out there but with help she could truly be unmatched.

  43. ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) October 4, 2011

@IRENE (I’ll only respond to what you said about Christina in both posts 😉 )
I actually don’t consider her SuperBowl performance that horrible, but I’m sure her throat has a different opinion. She was straining, pushing her larynx up and ignoring all vocal techniques just to show off. While I actually kind of liked the performance, it was still majorly unhealthy and her tone was altered by the wrong technique. If she takes the coaching VERY VERY seriously, then she can actually become a vocal legend in the next decade 😀 😀 YES!! And I want her coach to help her re-discover her stunning whistle register.

Now, when it comes to Christina’s dancing that you mentioned in the other post, I personally think that Christina is capable of pulling off a choreography, but she hasn’t showcased it enough. The movie showed that she is flexible, but it didn’t have many elements of modern pop choreo, so she has a lot to prove.I actually hope that she’ll dance in the MJ tribute because that would be epic!!And of course this era doesn’t really sound like an era with choreos, but you never know…She might surprise me 😉

  44. Junkface October 4, 2011

I think we can all agree that this is long overdue. I’m sick and tired of feeling her strain. Maybe all her stans can finally take a seat from all that hyping. I believe the true voice of our generation should be Beyonce. Someone who can sing the same notes better.

  45. ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) October 4, 2011

Why people start comparisons when they don’t even know their facts and they can’t even bother to be polite about it is beyond me…Anyway, the vocalist that the person above mentioned is great in her own right.I won’t extend the comparison, but there is a reason why Christina is considered the voice of the generation and that does not degrade or discredit any of the other brilliant vocalists of the generation.

  46. TWITTER.COM/Ayo_ronnie October 4, 2011

Beyonce is NOT the voice of her Generation. The fans didnt give Xtina that title the media as well as her peers have. You all will deal with that. When Xtina came out 98 no Pop b**** was toching her vocally. Beyonce was not singing the way she was today. Face the facts.

  47. Robier October 4, 2011

Hmmmm Seth is good but xtina will need to listen….. I love her and that voice is amazing

  48. Xtina wins by default October 4, 2011

LMAO at the poor jealous envious bastards that don’t like Christina’s “screaming”.

Christina’s “screaming” is the best screaming I’ve ever heard. She can keep doing that!!!!!!!!
It’s her SINGING STYLE, you poor wack-@ss crybabies. You still don’t get it??

Christina SH*TS on you. She is the best vocalist. Her entire career since the Mickey Mouse club days SPEAKS FOR ITSELF. All the fellow legendary VOCALISTS agree that Christina is magnificent. They mention and talk about how fantastic of a singer Christina is even when she is IRRELEVANT AND FLOPPING.

Christina doesn’t need number 1 songs on the charts, you poor f*cktarded idiots. She’s not that kind of lame-@ss, pathetic, untalented pop artist that needs validation from the public or charts or statistics, you f*ck imbeciles.

I can’t stand the stupidity of CHRISTINA VOICELERA’s HATERS.

Do you not understand? Christina could be 5000 pounds, with 475yt847 colorful makeup and have the worst selling album of all time, her music would STILL BE AMAZING, HER LYRICS WOULD STILL BE GREAT, SHE’D STILL BE THE BEST SINGER.

I see why the haters are mad and jealous. Xtina makes your favorite sound like pure sh*t.

  49. Xtina wins by default October 4, 2011

By the way… the RUMORS ABOUT CHRISTINA WORKING WITH A VOCAL COACH + WORKING WITH WILLIAM ORBIT ARE FALSE (AT LEAST THEY ARE FALSE FOR NOW).

These are made up rumors. I don’t even know who stared these. Nobody really knows anything about Christina’s new album, at this point. NOTHING HAS BEEN CONFIRMED.

Do NOT believe everything you read.

  50. Truth Seeker October 4, 2011

The Examiner isn’t a reliable source yet I do hope that she is looking towards getting a vocal coach. Her voice has already deteriorated some due to her improper singing techniques. She was blessed with a good natural singing voice but the constant screaming, straining and unnecessary adlibs have really done a number on her and really for how long she takes to release records, her voice should have held up much better.

  51. Small_Angel October 4, 2011

I don’t Think that Christina Aguilera is Oversinging.. its just that She does ACTUAL singing and THE OTHER GIRLS DON’t.
    LOL

Not that i dont like those other girls..

but Christina is just putting them on their respective places when she is singing..

#LOVE XTINA, KATY P, ADELE, TAYLOR and AVRIL…

  52. boytoy1814 October 4, 2011

Seth Riggs is LEGEND !!!! he’s work w/ everyone in music industry-from Whitney Houston Janet Jackson & Madonna, etc !!!

the VOICE of the Mellinium is BAAAAAAACK !!!!!

    LUVV U XTINA !!!!!

  53. hahaha October 5, 2011

LMAO xtina is clearly insecured with ADELE, that is why xtina wants to get her voice back!

  54. Xadax October 5, 2011

No one’s checking her? Are you effing crazy?! She’s as relevant whether highs or lows – she gets the attention effortlessly. Her voice, artistry, & songwriting is better than a manipulated, manufactured Beyonce. “For, with the industry sway generally favouring simple hooks, melodies, and ultimately voices (see: Ke$ha, Rihanna, and co), ” Pls. include Lady Gaga or Not Madonna on it.

  55. Xadax October 5, 2011

Sam you’re so closed minded that you only see singing as one perspective. Xtina doesn’t go from one type only.

    BTW
Christina Aguilera > Dangerously In Love
Stripped > Born This Way or B’Day
Back To Basics > 4 or 4 Deluxe Edition
Bionic > The Fame or The Fame Deluxe Ed (The Fame Monster)

    Better on all aspects.

  56. Xadax October 5, 2011

Xtina is NEVER insecure when it comes to people w/ real talent. She wants to be with them. Like Adele for instance. She would never love a fake, talentless, unauthentic “artist” like Gaga.

  57. nice_gurl October 5, 2011

Christina has a great voice, but she does need to tweak it a little, especially with live performances. This is good news!

  58. smellygaga October 5, 2011

    VOICETINA RULZZZZZZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  59. LaLa October 5, 2011

Gosh Finally!!! Excited for this… *while remembering Lift Me Up performance*

  60. vidal October 5, 2011

Christina will come back stronger than ever. For all those people who hate her, I know you will end up liking her.

  61. dang October 5, 2011

    SHE’S NOT A F****** FLOP!
SHE”S NO.1 topping those plastic popcor hits of Rihanna and tiity perry
Not everyone can just hire a bunch of writers (see: Dr Luke, Max Martin) and release some cool-but-not-ground-breaking hits. Xtina needs time to change her image and refresh her aritstic palette.
BOW DOWN GET ON YOUR KNEES
LET US NOT FORGET: WHO OWNS THE THRONE?

  62. Small_Angel October 6, 2011

    to all haters..
    WE LOVE CHRISTINA AGUILERA!!!

No matter what you all say!

  63. shauntwaz October 6, 2011

I love xtina!!! She’s brilliant and I love all of the music she has recorded!
She is such a SUCCESS!!! All of those private events she has been doing have been making her SO MUCH MONEY!
She’s no flop!! I love Bionic!!

  64. Straintina Offkeylera October 6, 2011
