It may have debuted with so so sales two weeks ago, but it seems Mary J. Blige‘s latest LP ‘My Life II: The Journey Continues‘ is unprepared to give up the ghost just yet.
For, in what will come as a pleasant surprise to many in her fan base, as of this chart week the album has sold more copies than Rihanna‘s latest project, Talk That Talk‘.

With a sales decline of 67% since last week, Rihanna‘s ‘Talk‘ moved a measly 64,286 copies in the US this week placing it at #7 while Blige‘s ‘My Life’ comes in at #5 selling 71,530 units in the last seven days.
This of course is bad news for Island Def Jam who two weeks ago watched Fenty miss out on scoring a #1 album for the sixth consecutive time, despite the success of the project’s lead single ‘We Found Love‘.
Elsewhere on the chart, Adele‘s ‘21‘ holds court at #2 with 145,215 units moved while Drake‘s ‘Take Care’ remains at #4 after selling an impressive 89, 469 copies in the last seven days, pushing its total sales well above the 900,000 mark less than a month since its release.
If it continues to sell consistently, it will without a doubt surpassed the 1 million copies sold barrier in less than three weeks time.

On the billboard 200 Mary sold 72k with almost a 60% drop and Rihanna sold 68k, only a 4k differsnce from Mary. Mary was on every major show here in the states and still only managed to sell a little more than Rih who has absolutely no promotion (except the X Factor performance).

Rihanna, i wouldn’t say it’s a flop because she’s still got some time to build sales. But that album isn’t doing very well. As far as promo, she’s been everywhere, just came off another album and has a hit single—promotion really isn’t the issue. She’s pretty saturated, even with touring.
The problem is that the album sucks and so do her recent performances. I’ve never thought of her as the best performer, but she looks so, so beat. My sense is that she’s going to take a break after this go around, and we’ll see if she can come back strong. I think she can, but the label is so afraid someone else is going to burst on the scene and replace her. Maybe after this album they’ll realize she’s got some level of cement in the game. It may not be because of the reason I think are legit, but she’s made her own kind of mark anyway.

R&B and COUNTRY albums always sell better than POP albums with similar airplay on POP radio. You can’t ignore the fact that R&B albums that have produced HUGE URBAN hits sell miserably these days. If BeYAWNce has had 2 “smashes” at URBAN radio like you stans say, why are her album sales barely a million? Her album sales trickled off since Day 1 even as “Best Hit I Never Had” and the two versions of “Party” were huge on Urban Radio.
And Rated R sold 1 million in the US with a #1 hit and 2 minor hits. Typical of Rihanna. A Girl Like Me sold a little more with “SOS” and “Unfaithful” being huge hits “Hard” and “Russian Roullette” were hits, but not smashes.

I was making the point that Loud’s sucess (which happened gradually, like her other ones) has nothing to do with what I just said, which is that Rihanna is NOT flopping, Talk that Talk’s 1st and 2nd week sales tells normal people that she’s stalling. Comparing her to Beyonce was just my way of making that point, I don’t stan for Bey (thought I think she’s THAT B****. and have come to think that over the past two yeas). Don’t forget that Beyonce is generally and R&B artist that STILL sells more than RIhanna even though Rihanna is Pop/Reggae and does whatever music is most popular at the time, and Beyonce STILL has worldwide appeal (See: Glastonbury & The Most Attended Concert In Brazil). Try THAT on for size.
Of course she sells more in other countries than the United States if you combine 15 smaller countries sales together. World Wide means what? Every other country besides the U.S. Those markets matter, but they are not the measure of success for an artist who is signed to an AMERICAN record label and came to AMERICA to be developed. Island/Def Jam, in case you forgot. Not only does America matter in terms of taste-making and prestige, it matters in reality because its out promo plans and responses that get the ball rolling for overseas.
Rihanna needs to sit her ass down somewhere and understand that she has position, even if she doesn’t write her own music and makes catchy but forgettable albums made up of a few hit singles.

Hmmm so according to mediatraffic TTT clocked WW sales of just under 300k this week which leaves us overall at about 800k in 2 weeks WW a number which we achieved with not even a quarter of the promotion 4 closure got.
