Everyone clowned Nick Cannon for claiming that American Idol would need to pay all the way up to secure the judging services of his wife Mariah Carey. Yet, a week removed from his comments, not only is the superstar songbird the new judge on Fox’s hit show, she’s made history in doing so.

Reports from both Deadline and TMZ confirm that the premium diva is receiving $17-$18 million for her services. And that’s just for one season. The hefty fee sees her auto-dwarf Britney Spears’ $15million cheque for the X Factor USA, while the judge she replaces – rival Jennifer Lopez – earned $12 million for her most recent stint on the show. Ironically, it is believed Lopez was lobbying for a raise into the region of what Mariah’s now earning. The producers supposedly said no. Ouch.
However, staying true to her ever-ready PR script, the ‘On The Floor’ singer showed no hard feelings. Speaking on Carey joining Idol, the 42 year old told E! News:
“I think (she’ll do well), yeah! Why not?” She’s a musician for a long time she has a lot of experience. And it’s that experience you offer them at the end of the day, the contestants just want to get better and grow through the process.”

Most of J.Lo’s so-called “hits”, going clear back to Ja Rule were stolen from Mariah – even the samples used for the beats. Ja Rule even admitted this, as did everyone J.Lo worked with at the time. J.Lo has always refused to answer questions about it. Also, Benny Medina knew Mariah before J.Lo ever worked with him – that’s why he came to her after he left J.Lo. Mariah already had movie offers when JLO was still a Fly Girl. Mariah already had multiple #1 albums and 12 #1 singles before JLo even recorded her first album. Saying MC has been “chasing” J.Lo’s career is like saying Aretha Franklin was chasing Whitney. I still think Mariah will suck as a judge, but if you’re going to dis someone, at least get your facts straight.

JLO can diss her because it’s a free country, however, I’ve been dragged by my wife to concerts for both women and I don’t think JLO actually sang more than one song and I have seen her in concert 4 times now (hoping I don’t have to go to another… Please – someone take my wife!!). Nearly her entire performance is lipsynched – and it’s widely known she doesn’t sing live for TV (all her performances on AI were lipsynched). Mariah, however, sang her entire show live all 3 times I’ve seen her.
The entertainment factor is personal opinion. Fans of both women are obviously entertained at their shows and people who aren’t fans are bored. I think Mariah fans are going to love her on AI and JLO fans (who hate Mariah) will hate her. Just like I am sure the Mariah fans hated JLO when she was on the show. Since I don’t like either of their music, I’d prefer them to be judging rather than performing. I liked JLO as a judge (but then, I liked Cara, and everyone else hated her) and I enjoyed the moments of Mariah’s concerts where she just talked to the audience and stuff, so I will probably like her on AI too. As long as she doesn’t perform every week. PLEASE don’t torture me with that.

While I wasn’t exactly thrilled a long time ago when I first heard Jlo was judging the show cuz of her limited vocal ability, I liked Jlo as a judge and she has star power to be on American idol. Not just a voice! But for MC, this should be really interesting and I’m actually interested in watching the show since mc is an actually vocalist with the big voice and a real musician. Good to see such a diva back!
