Pop Music : Are ‘Vocalists’ On The Decline ?

Published: Thursday 26th Jul 2012 by David

Perhaps in response to the industry’s increasingly disposable nature, the question of talent remains ever present fueled by the head scratching ascent of many a contemporary act.

Unashamedly lacking any discernible gift or skill worthy of their notoriety, gone are the days where an artist did one or the other and if ‘the fan’ was lucky – both.

Instead, barring the likes of Alexandra Burke, Beyonce, Lady GaGa, Jessie J and Adele, it’s safe to say the actual ‘talent’ of most entertainers finds itself in disrepute, backed not by their skills but chart feats and in some cases…Twitter followers.

So now we ask:

Are vocalists – gifted singers – on the decline? Or are they just a little harder to find in the blur that is the Hot 100?

Let us know below!

Amen. This article is so true.

    • HIMGioDayevid July 26, 2012

It would be simple if labels weren’t forcing artists to be Madonna, and Britney Spears. . . . that’s the root of the issue, because a lot of consumers are consistently buying those artists music instead of the ones that are actually talented. the only exception is Adele, but to be honest Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, and Kelly Clarkson sing circles around her but somehow she sells more because idiot people buy her album instead of people who can actually sing. -_-

      • Huh July 26, 2012

Just because they can sing circles around her doesn’t make theme better. Adele & Christina or Mariah have two different vocal STYLES. Just because you can throw notes around and make a song drag on for 20 mins doesn’t automatically make you the best singer in the world. Adele has a beautiful strong crisp voice, that doesn’t need the embellishments. Sorry, I just had to speak up for her. but other than that comment…I agree lol

      • ronnoc July 26, 2012

i agree with you mostly. but just because christina and mariah can sing better than adele doesn’t necessarily make their albums any better. (in theory, bc i’d take an xtina album over adele’s any day lol)

Beyonce is the best !! f*** da rest!!

    • Honestly Speaking July 25, 2012

B**** please. Beyonce is a has-been and you are a tacky, ghetto flop with a flop comment.

      • Nacole July 25, 2012

I hope like hell this pop s*** is on the decline because as a 22 year old I have yet to experience a soul artist or alternative soul artist of my generation well atleast until Frank Ocean (hell yeah).

It’s time for the has beens and wanna be’s to take several seats at the nearest exit…

exactly ! These f*** thing their gonna get a response outta me ,Please!!!

      • Lax July 25, 2012

Just like the Grape wrote about Beyonce and Rihanna…
On a talent tip, their skills couldn’t be any further apart-with one having lots of it and the other renowned for her lack of it.

However, perhaps down to the genius of Beyonce‘s husband Jay Z, Rihanna has become one of the world’s most Popular acts- joining Knowles’ to become the only two ‘black’ singers with unmatched notoriety

And while RIHANNA might be Renowned for her lack of Talent she has still proven that she has staying powers that is UNMATCHED by any one her age, color or their ban accounts..
And even Alicia Keys albums has out sold beyonce’s albums
Alicia one album sold in excess of 12 million and why wasn’t alicia’s “Falling Featured” .

      You must be HIGH?!

DID YOU MESS PHYLLIS HYMAN at the top there? Beyonce is okay but she couldn’t carry the lovely and oh so talented Phyliis Hyman’s make-up kit let alone stand in her shadow!! 🙁

You might want to press play on Phy singing “In a Sentimental Mood” for further clarification or a pure vocalist!

  5. JJFan1814 July 25, 2012

No vocalist’s aren’t on the decline. They’re just not evolving or finding a niche to cater to the ever changing music…Therefore they fall into relevancy. I’m not saying to jump into pop music if you’re a strict R&B music….But a person is only one song away from starting trends and becoming relevant again,

    • mobwife (f*ck what you have to say) July 25, 2012

Damn, I hate to admit it but what you said is the truth!
I think the younger artists can easily vacillate but the older acts tend to get “clowned” whenever they attempt to switch it up a bit!

  6. Rob July 25, 2012

    LMAOOOO. Those b****** can’t sing.

  7. Lana Del Labeija July 25, 2012

If you are a record executive trying to make money who would you sign? A talented self-assured vocalist who wants to control everything, get songwriting credits, and do what she wants to do and not follow trends or a puppet who will do anything for a hit, hop on every trend and bandwagon, not ask for songwriting credits, and allow you to take advantage of them and make money off of them even when their career is over. There are some talented vocalists in the industry, but this is a BUSINESS. It’s not about nurturing talented people who will be around for 20 years, it’s about getting quick hits from artists and throwing them away when they are not longer profitable. It’s f***** up, but that’s just the way the game is played.

and beyonce, adele, and others or making bank as far as music goes and the music LOWS isn’t any lower then any other music that is out there by COUNTLESS artist and just think at the top of the Highest earners under 30 look at who make up the top five, Taylor, rihanna, justin, katy,
and others or making bank and since its big bucks why should they stop living because Music isn’t selling for others, Adele Music sold like Hot Cakes and still selling and it’s all about Supply & Demand, folks! And who will support yo efforts it don’t matter a dam if yo ass can hit the high notes or not its popularity, image and likability!

i can’t at you guys leaving xtina out. she is THE VOICE of her generation

    • Honestly Speaking July 25, 2012

She screams her way through every song. There is a difference between SCREAMING and SINGING. Basic ass b****.

      • lll July 25, 2012

lol is that why she’s praised by celine dion, whitney houston and is considered the voice of the generation? gurl bye

Just because she got co-signed by two people who were actually able to sing and ten times more successful than she could ever hope to become doesn’t mean anything. She is a flop and everyone says that she needs vocal lessons. Has your b**** ass forgotten about Bionic already? Christina is the definition of a flop b**** one step away from Welfare and Burger King.

        +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

        @ honestly speaking…

do you read what you write? how does being praised by extremely good vocalist not mean anything? for your info she’s had more than two authentic talents checking for her. whenever this alleged flop performs in front of singing artists she gets huge ovations.

you say she’s flop over one bad selling album. who were you calling an idiot?

i this from something called ‘the official discussion thread’:

        Christina Aguilera – 16 million
        Mi Reflejo – 3 million
My Kind of Christmas – 3 million
        Stripped – 13 million
Back to Basics – 5 million
        KGB: ADOH – 1.5 million
        Bionic – 800k
        Burlesque – 1 million

for as much as ‘bionic was shaded and hated and barely promoted it’s says a lot that she was able to move 800k ww. the lying gaga bs was relentless. this flop also managed to sell 1 million of her soundtrack with the release of no singles, no airplay, little promo and plenty of hate.

her collab with maroon 5 ‘moves like jagger’ was #1 on the bb hot 100 singles chart for a total of 7 weeks and in the top 50 for at least 47 for nearly a year.

her tv show ‘the voice’ is a success, no thanks to the christina hating media who barely even mention out of fear of giving her too much shine.

      • irene46 July 27, 2012

correction : and in the top 50 for at least 47 weeks…nearly a year.

No, vocalists are not on the decline. The music industry is the same as it’s been for at least 30 years. Music technology evolved tremendously in the 60s and 70s, and that allowed marginal singers the ability to make good records with a little help.

Consider these chart-topping artsts from thirty years ago: Toni Basil, Culture Club, Zapp, the J. Geils Band, Musical Youth, and Blondie. ijs

  15. Rita Slays July 25, 2012

There are plenty of vocalist out there still, its just that they struggle to make music that people want to hear. New talent like Lady GaGa, Jennifer Hudson, Jazmine Sullivan, Adele, Leona Lewis, Melanie Fiona, Rita Ora, Jessie J, Alexandra Burke, Charice, and plenty others can all sing. Most of them aren’t topping the charts because their music doesn’t appeal to most people or they simply lack proper promotion.

And what was the point of posting performances from Cassie, Rihanna, and Tulisa? They are vocaless

    • Lax July 25, 2012

@RITA,,,,I sure don’t see a rita orajel video and we do not
give a shyt about what post and when because ADELE proves that music is still selling and so does Taylor swift, gag, Rihanna and others who or right now on the charts and doing it up big. The question is why isn’t KELLY motivation posted it was as good as anything BEYONCE song from “4”
      to me.
Cassis have not had a hit, song or album since the hen laid a egg and why wasn’t jill, maryj, jennifer posted, Monica, just saying!!!!

Vocalists are not on the decline, you just won’t hear many of them on mainstream radio these days. Nobody buys albums anymore, so labels rely on singles for that quick hit. Fun, catchy music usually sells well, since people are more willing to spend $1.29 on a single than buy a full album.

        So WATCH YO’ MOUFF

    • Gilberto July 25, 2012

Sorry, but if you are a truly a good vocalist, any performance of yours is the best. If you have to look for a specific performance of Rihanna to proove that she can sing, well, b****, you know she sucks. I watched most of Rihanna’s performance and she still has to impress me vocally. There are some okay performances, of course, but most of them are bad.
I don’t even need to proove that Beyoncé can sing. You just can go to YouTube and search for “Beyoncé live”, you can watch any performance of hers and I bet she’ll sound amazing.
      Picture the difference?

No, thats just an excuse for FANS OF FLOP ASS H*** like BEYAWNCE, Mariah Curry and s***.

VOCALISTS are not on the decline, CLEVER people are on the decline. You cannot post peoples worst performances to try and slander their vocals because at the end of the day albums by Katy Perry, Britney Spears, ManDonna and other shaky vocalists are not LIVE they are STUDIO ALBUMS.

Britney spears is the only one who DARE put herself on the radio sounding a HOT ASS MESS. EVERYONE ELSE else sounds fine. Some artist like Mariah and s*** release s*** that is closed and only their CRAZY STANS will like because they STALK THEM enough to know them PERSONALLY.

Ballads and GOOD SINGERS songs are capable of being Radio hits its JUST TALENTED VOCALIST Take to long BREAKS inbetween ALBUMS That they can never get MOMENTUM like RIHANNA “CAN GET A HIT” Fenty.

Dont fool yourselves. BEYAWNCE, FLOPNEY SPEARS, HAGDONNA, MARIAH CURRY, FISTOPHER BEATDOWN and “LADY” GAYGAY’s next albums will struggle to hit platinum.

You are a Rihanna stan, who the hell are you to judge anyone’s sales when your girl can only manage 2 X platinum as her best sale to date. Even Beyonce (whom you despise so much) has a 4x platinum album as her best yet.

P.s. how much has TTT sold? Yeah it hasn’t hit a platinum marl yet while “4” has. I am not a Beyonce/Madonna/Brittney fan but dam you are really quite to disrespect other artists.

  23. Benron (F*** you h**) July 25, 2012

Some artist stuggle to make relatable music. If Rihanna wanted to tell her life story she would write a book! Thats why Rated R flopped, It was way to personal! 4CLOSURE is way to personal, just like all those other ‘talented vocalists s***”. They relase music thinking everybody cares about them.

Also, I never understand the point of posting Rihanna singing “hero”. Do you want me to go dig up Beyawnce singing OFF KEY IN THE SHOWER AT 12 and try to say that it reflects her voice? That girl singing hero was performing for her first time, and was not a PROFESSIONAL singer. It was a DAMN HIGHSCHOOL TALENT SHOW show, which is lower on the scale then Karoke night.

Just remember that she won that talent show and now has a CAREER that has MADE HER at least 91 MILLION DOLLARS (07 she made 19 mil, ’10 she made 29 million ’11 she made 53 million)

So in FINAL Rihanna is a business woman, so is Katy and Gaga (who both are not probably like their music in real life). Beyonce is a flop h**, Christina is a schreeching squealing flop h** and Mariah is a beautiful talented flop female.

    • ENOUGH ONIKA July 25, 2012

How did Rated R flop? Some of ya’ll are so quick to call an album a flop but do know how the business works. The sales she made during that time period was actually very success, especially where music industry sits as far as sales. I DO NOT stand for Rihanna, but come on now, sales aren’t what they use to be so pushing more than 800,000 copies isn’t a flop. Plus top 10 singles and a sold out tour (which the label and artists really care about since that’s how they make majority of their money) isn’t bad. Plus positive reception from critics. Ciara’s Basic Instinct is an example of a flop.

      • Benron (F*** you h**) July 25, 2012

  24. MissImpartial July 25, 2012

It used to be about the vocals and talent. Female singers wanted to be divas like Whitney, Mariah and Celine. Nowadays the voice doesn’t really count as artists want to be an Image artist like Madonna.

But it is not just the voice that is changing but the music style as fans don’t want TOO LYRICAL COMPLICATED/IN DEPTH SONGS BUT SHORT EASY FARIY SONGS. THAT’S WHY THE NOT SO GOOD SINGERS DO BETTER AS NO ONE LISTENS TO BALLADS ANYMORE.

But why do people concentrate about female vocals but never male vocals. I mean the standard has dropped with the male artists as well.

Both Chris Brown & Usher Raymond are R&B artists who make Pop tunes on occasion! And might I add, ppl are b*tching and moaning about both of their project being too Pop when NEITHER ARE POP-ORIENTED AT ALL! Ppl read bullsh** and follow behind whatever the lying media tells them!

  25. Pucci July 25, 2012

One can say they are, since the crop chart toppers nowadays vocals are challenged highly, their songs are critcized for being too mediocre while artists who can really sing and sing meaningful songs & lyrics take a back seat to the lessors in the talent department.

And then one can say NO. That its about having that hit song at the right moment. There are ballads that do make the Hot 100, though not many, but still Adele has proven that you do not have to sing pop-ish songs about partying & getting drunk & perform with half of your clothes off to be #1.

Though many will elude that to the fact that Adele is a white brititsh woman, and while her music is meaningful artist like Jill Scott & co. who have been singing that type of music for years have yet to make a chart takeover like Adele. There are many reasons for today’s chart success, & really now its just ppls opinion that doesn’t make it true or untrue. Just ppls opinions.

  26. ENOUGH ONIKA July 25, 2012

In “popular ” music, absolutely. But in gospel, true R&B, and soul, it’s the vocals that make you and everything else is secondary. Image is idolized in pop music which is why any skinny and plastic young adult seeking attention can make a splash in pop but that DOESN’T equal success though (i.e. Rita)..

  28. i’m not throwing shade, but… July 25, 2012

I think things are different now. The reason is that black people were signed back in the day for their singing skills and were able to capture a market regardless of looks. Record labels then went looking for white people with singing skills and then there were a breed of white singers who were signed regardless of looks, and then there times changed again and image became the main focus and image took a steady second and then came the turn of the Britney Spears syndrome where singing was not the factor needed to make a superstar as Britney was known for her image,s** appeal and catchy songs and not for singing. After that there have been bursts of great singers who have been signed and made it (or not) and its been hit and miss since.

  29. jade July 25, 2012

Beyonce is a oxymoron. She is very talented and she can sing her ass off but she chooses to act like those other singers with lesser talent. She could be a Monica Brady Mariah or Whitney but she chooses to be a J.lo Rihanna or Katy Perrry. She has the talent so I don’t understand why she needs the wigs or the leotards.

    • mobwife (f*ck what you have to say) July 25, 2012

Wait how does Bey act like Rih, Naked Perry & JHO? Beyonce (and I’m in no way a stan or a close fan) is an ARTIST who is also an ENTERTAINER! Ppl get confused and try to group all these folks together. Tina Turner (tho not he best vocalist) was an Enterainer in addition to being a singer. Beyonce reminds me a bit of her but has more of a vocal ranger/depth.

The industry does need artists who can actually DANCE, SING & ENTERTAIN a crowd.I also say this of MJ singing dancing lineage -> Usher, Ne-yo. & especialy Chris Brown. CB is highly crticized for dancing and singing but damn we do need artists who can also ENTERTAIN. Not everyone needs to be an Adele (stands, cups hands and sings) or a Jayz (rocks back and forth wih hand on his c***).

Vocalists are not on the decline they just don’t get the recognition they deserve because of the changing trends of music. Many true vocalists don’t see success on the Top 100…..Now it’s all about who can make you shake your ass……that is all.

    • mobwife (f*ck what you have to say) July 25, 2012

Not just a$$ shaking but success on the POP CHART (that top 100 you mentioned). Adele and Amy Winehouse are good examples of that as they had great success with very mellow and somber songs.

It’s sad when the likes of Brandy & Monica (ur avatar) are considered “flops” – I really hate that term – simply because they didn’t sell 400k copies of their CD in the 1st week. Ppl never consider that the R&B genre is not widely marketed as are Pop, Country & now Rap! Look at Jazmine Sullivan. She was dropped from her record label for what they deemed low 1st week sells. The girl had a nice singing voice. It’s a damn shame how the industry treats artsists while the public blames the artsist and not the industry!

      • B4REAL02 July 25, 2012

        I agree….

  34. S****** Blonde July 25, 2012

I don’t believe in vocals, I’m a music lover, not a day goes by without hearing at least one song but I have never concentrated to consider an artist better than another only by high vocal ranges. is the way in which an artist performs a song, the feeling you put into each letter, not the high notes, many artists are considered to be bad singers because they don’t have high notes or just because they’re not constants in their live performances, but who is, even whitney houston, Mariah and Celine Dion have moments when they lose their voice on stage, to me is more important what a person makes me feel when he/she sings, is how a singer identifies with his/her own song, what he feels is reflected in his voice and that makes him/her the best singer in the world and that is something that many so-called vocalists are not capable of. Singers like Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion and Mariah Carey are the most celebrated vocalist of all times, i respect them for that, my favorite among them Whitney because she have the qualities of what i’m talking about, the feeling, the power of make you feel sad, happy and tender with her voice. The most beautiful voice I’ve heard in my life is that of Karen Carpenter, gives me chills, even today it is so and she did not have the best voice in the world but the way she sings, the softness of her voice is like listening to an angel, which it’s something that some vocalist don’t makes me feel. Vocalists are not in decline, Music is in decline, singers are as good today as they used to be 20 years ago, there would always be good and bad singers, the problem today is the Music itself.

    • Candid July 25, 2012

Shut up. You’re just a fan of “singers” who can’t sang is all. I guess I would try and convince myself of all that crap you just wrote too if my favorite artists were just studio singers who failed every time they get behind a live mic.

If all you can do is look good in a video or photo shoo, but sound like a dying cat when you open your mouth, then go be a model…don’t be a singer.

    • JohnVidal(RIP Whitney-truegreat) July 25, 2012

I agree with a big part of your comment. Music is on decline, it has been for a decade now. About the vocalist I agree the voice is not it all. Music is the most important thing, or how it is sung…. BUT Mariah, Whitney and Celine have all those qualities you were talking about. Their voices are everything. That´s why Females who came afte rthem can´t compare vocally (talking about the typical big voice). Nobody has had it all in one voices after those 3
And also, another thing… I know you like lots and lots of different music and you have what we could denominate good taste… but can u explain to us why you like Rihanna, Britney Spears and J.Lo then??? Cos they don´t have the great music and specially not those qualities in their voices you were talking about (they can´t make you feel anything apart from wanting to get drunk maybe)
People like Madonna, etc hell yes I´m on… music is not only about the voice… but people like those 3? Why do they have a music career at all? 🙂

      • S****** Blonde July 25, 2012

ohh John! as always you’re coming for my ass, well you know, i don’t say, Celine or Mimi didn’t have those qualities, i just say that Whitney was my fav. among them, you know my weakness is miss Ciccone but i like Britney, Rihanna and J.Lo, i recommend you listen to J.Lo’s spanish album “Como Ama Una Mujer”, the album is brilliant, Rihanna is more than just singles, her non-single songs are better, trust me and Britney, i’m not into her ballads to be honest but her Music is cool and fresh, i must say, J.Lo’s music is great, i don’t like that much her last album, to me her only non-decent album but is still ok, the rest of her past work are very good.

Rihanna is much more of a vocalist then the two you named

She has sung well b4 and doesent lypsync all the time. She has nice big notes and runs most of the time and is gettting better at staying in key the whole.

The other two s**** cant even press play on a microphone. So at least Rih takes herself seriously!

  35. Gilberto July 25, 2012

The overall music industry is in decline. Labels stopped looking for talented gems along time ago. Today, they’re looking for marketable singers, people that can have their careers controlled by the label. They give them the most catchy (and generic) sound, pay some payola and then they have an instantaneous hit.
I don’t think everyone can be on the level of Whitney, Etta, Anita Baker, Celine Dion. But what I have seen from our comtemporany singers is unbelievable. They sound really bad!!! They not only can’t sing but they can’t dance and perform. Most of these singers spend more time on Twitter and Facebook than rehearsing for a performance. They’re too worried trying to show personality, bright colors, colorful wigs, bizarre outfits, etc, and they forget about what’s really important: the live performances.
People like Michael, Beyonce, Usher, Mariah, Whitney, Tina, Janet etc, they were highly trained to be musicians. Today, labels don’t give a f*** about it, they just want you to sell records as fast as possible.
Just because you sing live, it doesn’t make you a singer. Just because you dance on your music video, it doesn’t make you a dancer. I don’t give A for efforts.

    • Candid July 25, 2012

You had me until you included Janet’s name in that list of “musicians”. Types like her gave birth to image pandering studio singers like Rihanna and Katy.

      • Gilberto July 25, 2012

You’re quite right. Janet is not a musician, but a performer. What I tried to say is that singers used to be highly trained to be a star. Today, I don’t see this. I am not fan of Janet’s songs, but she inpired many others like Beyoncé, TLC and Aaliyah.

      • RICHANDBLACK11(JUST LIKE BEY) July 25, 2012

Yes and no! POP IS THE MUSIC INDUSTRY’S MONEY MAKER so yes they do look for acts – not ARTISTS more like gimmicks – who are controllable and marketable! That doesn’t mean talent or vocalists have declined. ALL THE MEDIA & INDUSTRY ATTENTION is just focused in one direction. If you listen to stations outside of POP you will discover their are a number of great vocalists on the scene!

As for artists & gimmicks being on Twitter, Facebook, & other social media, well so are every MONEY MAKING CORPORATION, The Obama Administration and the no good lying media. Several of the folks you mention are also on social media. It is what it is. Because folks use social media to stay connected to their fans doesn’t mean they don’t spend time practicing their vocal, dance, songwriting, and overall performance skills.

Rihanna is the most UNIQUE sound in the music industry of all of the artist out there and she proudly have got the tickets to prove that she has staying powers and i know that keep many very pissy & talking a truck load of shyt. Behind adele who or the top five female musician for the moment.

      Right.
      2012 R******’s Archivements
      No #1 album;
      No #1 single;
      No #1 movie;
      No tour;
      No iconic performance;
      No good performance;
      No major award;
      Battleshit is one of the biggest flops of all time;
      Using Chris Brown’s name on magazines and songs;
      No Platinum album;
      Talk That Flop era.

Wow! I’m impressed by the hottest chick in the game’s success. LOL. Keri Hilson and Ciara could never. LMFAO.
Speaking of snatching wigs, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj snatched R******’s wig back and forth this year. LOL. R****** needs to step up her game, she is already on the corner. She knows she’s easily replaceable so if her next albums fail like Music Of The Flop, A Flop Like Me, Rated Flop and Talk That Flop, she is going to be nothing but a female version of Flo Rida or Pitbull.

      • Benron (F*** you h**) July 25, 2012

She never released an album this year, she only released 2 singles. She killed the grammys and #TTT wasnt promoted so it had slow sales.

Nicki Minaj got 1 top ten single dont be to excited her album is stuggling to sell 600k.

What about beyonce, what acheivments did she have this year.
        Ill wait.

    • Candid July 25, 2012

Her 7th consecutive non-number one album is coming. For the 7th time she’ll put some s*** out that the public as a whole won’t see as being a priority buy. Yep! Album #7 of disposable toxic waste songs that could have been recorded by ANYONE is on the way.

      • Ashley July 26, 2012

        Cosign.
And about this comment: “Yep! Album #7 of disposable toxic waste songs that could have been recorded by ANYONE is on the way.”

Could be recorded by anyone, and most likely recorded better than the b**** herself.

    • Ohreally July 25, 2012

Wait one minute! She snatched Bey’s Wig in 2009? This is new to me, because if I am not mistaken Bey set a record for number of Grammy’s won by a female, umm Single Ladies slayed, umm I..Am slayed, her tour slayed….if I remember correctly 2009 and Rihanna was Rated R, that flop as last girl on earth tour, selling her CD for $.99 and still couldn’t get a number 1 album, but she managed to go number with Rude boy. So they brought a $1.29 single but wouldn’t spend $.99 to get the entire album. WOW….So who wig did she snatch in 2009? Oh ok.

      • Lax July 25, 2012

        @MONSTAREBEL U R SO RIGHT,And it is killing
them slowly because they know all about Rihanna many accolades, awards and His-To-Rih making Highlights and that too sends them into a tail spin, just as a Dog CHASING his tail around in circles.
        PS
Just looking at Rihannas accomplishments for 2011
is enough to make the Loosers, doubters, naysayers,
Lames and even “Ray Charles” who can see that Rih

  38. POP MUSIC LOVER July 25, 2012

The music of most so-called “vocalists” just doesn’t appeal to my ears. *shrugs* Sue me, but I’m more drawn to people like Britney and Rihanna than Mariah and Adele. I like music that I can bop around to and have a good time and I can’t get that from folks who are “good/great singers”. I guess I’m more into the beat and feeling of a song than whether or not somebody can hit high notes or sing a certain way.

    • Candid July 25, 2012

No, you’re just shallow as hell and have no business contributing to a conversation about music. You’re like a 2 year old who bounces to the beat of a dryer.

People like you are part of the problem. If all you wanna hear is mindless, turn-your-brain-off thumpa-thumpa, then go drop acid at some tacky dance club. Tastes like yours are frankly dangerous and should not be catered to.

Not everyone has to sound like Mariah, but if you’re silly enough to co-sign types like Britney and Rihanna as luminaries, then you seriously need to hush. You have nothing to add here.

    • YESIDIDBITCH July 25, 2012

I agree at times, it’s all about good dance music at times.

  40. mobwife (f*ck what you have to say) July 25, 2012

Someone above said it best, Pop is not the place to look for great vocalist. This isn’t to say that some well renown vocalist haven’t had success on the Pop charts (Whitney Houston, Astrud Gilberto, etc). However, if you are looking for great singers R&B has them in spades from the late great Phillis Hymen to Jill Scott to Dana Owens aka Queen Latifa (yes she can actually sing ppl)! There is a great variation in vocalist as well from Stephanie Mills & Anita Baker to Tamia & Beyonce. There is also a wealth of vocal talent in Gospel music.

Pop is a hodgepodge of talent. Pop is media and music industry excutive based. This are the ppl running the music industry into the ground. They prop up folks who are marginally talented but marketable. They will also ruin the popularity of those they don’t want to succeed via a number of means, from negative press to no promotions of their music to lack of support for their craft & genre.

  41. TeamBreezy July 25, 2012

Music is generational .. ie the 70s for example..
in todays market no one cares how well you sing, we care about the material delivered

  42. john July 25, 2012

vocalist are not on the decline. alunbs dont sell like they once used to. so labels are more interested in finding stars that are more mareketabl. so they can sell a lot and make a lot. with out having to spend a lot of marketing/promotional dollars on them. you have jazmine sullivan, melionie fiona, brandy, monica, tweet. these blogs dont give them the same chance as rihanna due to them not bringing huge traffic. lil mo just released a new alumb called p.s. i love me. and the only blog that did a post about was necole bitchie and sandra. if you and other blogs woulda have given her shine. like you give ri ri and ci ci. she probably would be selling to. u also have teairra mari. she got a new alumb coming out. but i dont see yall doing post about her.

  43. CzarM July 25, 2012

I just have to laugh at Rihanna fans who act like that grotesque performance of hers was just an “off” day and that she’s improved. No she hasn’t. She sounds the same today as she did then. The only difference is that today there are a team of studio engineers who stay up 24 hours straight trying to tinker with her recorded vocals to make them sound less awful after the fact. That video was an honest portrayal of Rihanna’s “natural” talent…or lack thereof.

    • Benron (F*** you h**) July 25, 2012

No it isnt, she wasnt rofessional then so its irrelevant!

  44. ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) July 25, 2012

Unforunately, yes. Noone cares about the vocals anymore and that’s sad. I for one happen to believe that a great vocal performance can complete a well produced pop song. A good beat is not always enough. Epic vocals can take a song to a whole new level and give it an anthemic feel or a classic vibe.

I have no problem with mediocre vocalists, but there should be variety. I understand that in the pop market, good vocals are not an obligation, but they shouldn’t be an actual obstacle! That’s too much! Real vocalists tend to control themselves or lower the key to the songs that their label choose as singles just to make them radio friendly and that’s pathetic. Not every song has to be a sing along.

Anyway, I’m not particularly worried. Christina, Beyonce and Mariah are all plotting a comeback in the next few months, so we’ll get some great vocals. I just hope they all do well, even though I can’t say I’m a big fan of all 3, because I consider these 3 the only great and noteworthy vocalists around.

    • MRDIVABITCH July 26, 2012

You can’t seriously talk about real vocalists and put Christina and her nasty strained off key vocals in the same sentence. That’s just being a hypocrite. The woman is not a vocalist, she has no control whatsoever of her voice.
However, Mariah and Beyonce are real vocalists.

  46. RICHANDBLACK11(JUST LIKE BEY) July 25, 2012

The Obama Campaign circulated an email to supporters yesterday, making good use of the enthusiastic support given the president by pop star, Beyoncé. Beyoncé’s email contains a link to a video the singer made praising the First Lady and at the end of the email, she asks readers to join her “in adding your name to Young Americans for Obama to support her and President Obama in this election.”

The email echoes the video, as she once again declares, “I’m proud that my daughter will grow up in a world where she has people like the First Lady to look up to.”

The video that the email links to shows Beyoncé in awe of the First Lady for her success as a nurturing mother and wife, her encouragement of healthy living, and her support of veterans. It features clips of Michelle Obama delivering speeches and spending time with her family as Beyoncé reads from her letter.

The Obama Campaign has certainly not been shy about its use of celebrities to fundraise. Other vocal celebrity supporters include pop singer Katy Perry, actress Sarah Jessica Parker, and editor-in-chief of American Vogue, Anna Wintour.

  47. WATCH YO’ MOUFF (user k.a. LORD) July 25, 2012

IMO, stank-p**** dance-pop b****** will work for 2 years more AT MOST and then you’ll see them out on streets pissing and farting in their colourful wigs hoping they could get some warmth.

It’s always been that way. If you do something original, real, and just be yourself, you can sell tens of million albums. Adele has already proved that.

Thank God Beyo isn’t one of this garbage genration’s singers. She’s already sold 30M solo album copies + 50M with DC + 45M singles, all of which is less than 50% of what she’s acheived overall.

So I think she’s on the level of creating the kind of music, the sound that her fans enjoy, not caring about how many million copies it sells, or having “top ten hits” or not.

    • ihadafakepregancy(just like bey) July 25, 2012

Um RIHANNA HAS SOLD 80 MILLION BY HERSELF DIDNT NEED HER DADDY AND HER GIRLGROUP TO DO IT… RIHANNAHAS SOLD MORE THAN BEYFAKE… RIHANNA IS PLATINUM IN 35 COUNTRIES BEYONCE NOT SO MUCH!!

      • LORD July 25, 2012

No she’s sold 85 recs ww, not 85. But when 71% are 1$-SINGLES, that’s when Rihanna Nazy should know to stop using that ‘records’ thing.

So, I think being managed by your daddy is way better than being managed by some pervious drug-dealer who already shares hundereds of millions with his wife. I think that’s the only reason why Rihanna is yet to make it to the $100 million mark.

and Did you notice how Beyonce’s albums sold = Rihanna’s RECORDS sold???

  48. LuhLuhLuh-Lito July 25, 2012

Well when you have people like Nicki Minaj and Drake using auto tune presenting themselves as “singers” too and you have ppl like Rihanna and Nicki Minaj who need more dancers, hair colors and spectacle (lights, glitter, distractions) to keep your mind off of their horrible “live” performances and you have ppl like Chris Brown who can dance his ass off but LIPSYNCH’s (like Nicki mostly does) for dear life it’s really annoying. But it’s ok because we still have some REAL talent out there, i could really care less what these young ass kids hail as talent, they dunno SH*T lol

I love Phyllis Hyman! I’m going back to the classics & listening to REAL music. I’m tired out hearing about ppl making history when all the do is lip sync to two beats and a clap. In five years, no one will say today’s POPULAR chart breaking music is classic. I respect artists who develop their artistry & spread positive music–that’s what we need in these trying times. I guess today’s music reflects our zietgeist. I find it funny how people fawn over these fictitious characters as if they’re asinine music has any bearing on their life. Smh

    Not necessarily..
There are plenty of talented vocalist that make it on the hot 100.
The problem is most labels act like they don’t know how to market them.
The days of the music industry are numbered and have been since the early days of Napster.
    Looking at those videos sorry
May god rest her soul miss hyman does nothing for me….
To the navy are you really going to sit here and say Rihanna can sing? I mean look at Beyonce sitting down doing runs, high notes, etc and she sounds wonderful doing it.
I never noticed Rihanna sounded so awful.
I thought Beyonce stans were just jealous.
    I see otherwise now lol

    • MC July 25, 2012

The BeeHive in a little over the top sometimes, but Beyonce is actually talented and they can back up some of their arguments, unlike Rihanna fans who are just plane delusional by claiming she is a “vocalist” and whatnot. Rihanna cannot sing, but she has that star quality and bad girl vibe that people (younger people) seem to enjoy.

Sometimes i don’t care about who has a great voice, or good voice or even decent voice for that matter. To me i love music, and if the song is hot that’s all that matters to me at times. Most b****** like Bitchyonce, Rihtart, and that annoying ass c*** bitchie cuntnaj can’t sing. This isn’t the era of great singers, it’s the era of who can bleach their skin the most to cross over with a dance song. People say they love real artist but yet when their albums drop they steal it, that’s one of the reasons why great artist are in decline, its’ because they are not be supported.

    • Ohreally July 25, 2012

You should correct your statement you don’t love music you love trends and what’s hot at the time. If you truly loved music you would love vocal ability, arrangements etc.. so having a voice would matter to you. and say beyonce can’t sing and even put her in the category with Rihanna and Nicki? Bey with the technicality in her voice can do more than a lot of b****** in the game. Does she have the greatest voice, of course not. That will forever be Nippy, but to say she can’t sing…joke, check the receipts for vocal ability.

  53. mc the place to be!! July 25, 2012

Phyliss hyman got this!! Its nothing wrong with the vocalists its just the music they put out sounds so childish like they need to go back to school . Mariah for probably all of her career she has put out the great vocals with the lyrics to match and have songs that ppl will remember for years to come most of these ppl like Beyonce/nicki most of their music is for now and probably will be forgotten in the next 5 years or so if YouTube all of the sudden ends they’re all in good in a way but I think they need a lesson or two in actual production because it sounds like something you and I should have made up in the boredom of our 4th period English class

    • FAFRELOADED July 25, 2012

  54. S****** Blonde July 25, 2012

Oh please!….high notes are not important anymore, people are so wrong, today it’s more important to have more number ones on Billboard (i don’t agree) but it’s the music industry today, CRAP. Vocalists are not necessary anymore, sad, we have to still go back and listen to Whitney, Celine and Mariah….no one would ever be as famous as those vocalist. EXAMPLE:

Madonna is the star that all POP female artist are compared to. Her music, albums, reinventions, videos are/were events. She wrote about topics 20+ years ago that artists today would be terrified to touch, Mariah Carey wrote great love songs while Madonna was busy changing the world. Empowerment, spirituality, abuse, death, live, s**, love, religion, the A*** crisis and power are all deeper themes then a typical love ballad from Mariah, Make no mistake I love Mariah Carey, Music would probably be the same if Mariah Carey didn’t exist (we’d still have Whitney Houston and Celine Dion) but music can be divided into 2 periods; those that came before Madonna, and those that came after.

Today vocalists are not that important, SAD but true, that’s why you have artists like Katy Perry and Bieber on the charts. The same applies to Lady Gaga and Beyonce and Christina Aguilera, while Christina and Beyonce are considered good singers (some call them vocalist, i agree with Xtina but no with…) they would never be as big or successful as Lady Gaga is/would be because today, your voice, it’s not the X-factor, it’s controversy and your looks (in some cases) what is important, just like Madonna and Whitney back in the day, Voice vs controversy.

    • That B*tch July 25, 2012

I was with you until you said music would be the same w/o MC. MC is THE artist with the most weeks at #1. “One sweet day” spent 16 weeks at #1 on the US charts making it the longest running #1 single. On top of that Mariah Carey has sold over 200 million records worldwide. She has a lot more accomplishments than what I’m naming now so that just shows you how much of an importance she is to the music industry. Mariah Carey has set the standards for female singers everywhere. Even singers that come after her named MC as one of their role models and inspirations. Mariah changed the game of the music industry and you can’t take that from her.

      • CzarM July 25, 2012

Mariah didn’t “change the game,” she simply played it. Her success was as orchestrated and manipulated by her handlers as Rihanna’s.

      • MC July 25, 2012

@ CzarM Mariah did change the game…go check your facts

    • MC July 25, 2012

I get what you saying but artists like Adele are hot right now so maybe it all depends on the consumer, meaning what people feel is “hot” at the moment.

Your commentary is always annoying and dense. Being long-winded and writing a bunch of silly sounding paragraphs (trying to sound astute) never works for you.

What exactly are “high notes” in this context? There are plenty of strong vocalists who don’t go “high.” You’re being arbitrary as f***; the terms you’re looking for is “broad range.” Idiot.

Meanwhile, if vocals weren’t important, all of these reality TV competitions wouldn’t A) exists and B) be garnering bigger ratings than sitcoms and hour dramas. And looks, controversy and sensationalism has been a component of an artists success since the advent of MTV, back in the early 1980s. It’s nothing new.

      Seriously, just hush.

      • FAFRELOADED July 25, 2012

Adele’s fat ass is fading once she has that baby. The b**** is always hoarse and has NOTHING on Amy’s talent level! She’s capitalizing off of her death/legacy. PERIOD!!

      • That B*tch July 25, 2012

        @ FAFRELOADED
This is one of the first times I’m agreeing with you. Yes, Adele did manage to ‘wow’ the masses but she just came along at the right time. When and if she returns her so called reign will not be as powerful as it once was.

  55. YESIDIDBITCH July 25, 2012

Rihanna doesn’t sound that bad singing hero to be honest

    • YESIDIDBITCH July 25, 2012

      Actually on second thought….b**** sucks

  56. CzarM July 25, 2012

I don’t think the public is as into types like Rihanna/Katy Perry and strobe light dance music as everyone thinks. Hell, look at their record sales. Then look at someone like Adele’s. She was proof that folks are open to something different, and still enjoy big voiced singers. The reason the public accepts all this silly, frilly, shallow pop music is because that’s just what’s out in spades and being mass marketed. What other choice is there? If 90% of what existed for a two mile radius were Italian restaurants, everyone in the area would be primarily eating Italian food…whether they liked it or not. If more artists stopped being scared to do something different, like focus on their talent, and if record labels didn’t play dumb in promoting those acts to the mainstream, a shift would happen. Dance and Pop music was genuinely hot in 2010; in 2012, I think it’s on autopilot – with people arbitrarily accepting it while waiting for the next wave to take it’s place.

    • FAFRELOADED July 25, 2012

Rihanna’s next album will flop.. she’s a single artist, she hardly sales records #fADING just like her song.. Lol.

      • That B*tch July 25, 2012

Rihanna and Katy Perry’s music appeals to 13 y/o’s that can’t afford to buy their music which is why their album sales are lagging.

      • CzarM July 25, 2012

Are you serious? Top 40 music has always been geared towards kids that age; from the 1950s on up. What age group do you think were buying Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys and Nsync albums in the late 90s? CDs today are cheaper than they ever were and sell for $10 (or less). Most 13 year olds get at least that much from their parents for an allowance.

Rihanna and Katy’s album sales lag because most people aren’t interested in owning a full album from the likes of them. They’d rather just buy single downloads of what they hear on the radio and call it a day.

  57. Mark July 25, 2012

The reason ‘vocalists’ are seemingly on the decline is simple:
It takes more time, money, preparation and promotion to develop and market them.

In this bad economy, and with the availability of the Internet, albums aren’t selling like they used to; which means that record labels don’t have as much money to spend on artist development…which is key when it comes to the successfully marketing those kinds of singers.

It’s just easier, quicker and cheaper to grab a Rihanna or a Carly Rae Jepsen off the street and have them record fast food pop music that anybody could sing than it is to sign a Whitney, a Mariah, a Celine, or an Alicia and spend 2 or 3 years and tens of millions trying to come up songs that’ll strike a balance between showing off their talent while also appealing to general masses. In addition to that, exceptional singers are generally expected to come off as more dignified and up-kept, which costs more money to refine their appearance and personalities with clothed and etiquette/media training.

Rihanna is cheaper (figuratively and literally), which is why types like her are everywhere today, while the talented singers are taking the backseat.

I hate today’s music and so-called “pop stars” too, but I’m getting tired of the complaining about it because all people are doing is complaining, while not doing anything else. Want more talented vocalists back? Start buying whole CDs instead of m** singles. Start actually requesting a good singers song at radio. Promote their song on your Twitter or blog. DO something. Stop waiting for the situation to change on its own.

  58. asipofbrandy July 25, 2012

Vocalists aren’t on the decline, but people really need to understand the differences between vocalists, musicians, and singers. Being a singer doesn’t make you a vocalist, if you haven’t had formal training then you are considered a singer and if you don’t play a musical instrument then you aren’t a musician for example, Stevie Wonder is a musician , Brandy is a vocalist , and Rihanna , no matter if you think she sings well are not, is a singer.

    • MRDIVABITCH July 26, 2012

Well put! A real vocalist controls the voice like an instrument, with the level of virtuosity an instrumentalist would have over his/her instrument. That’s why Beyonce is a vocalist and Christina is just an overrated amateur.

      • MC the place to be!! July 27, 2012

no shes not xtina is a great singer she been belting high c’s when beyonce was doing do wop pop pop in destiny’s child beyonces a good singer but she puts out pointless music too just like the rest of em today

  59. dexclusive July 25, 2012

Well a lot of rap songs ppl don’t sing today but a lot of ppl sure do sample from them and the 90s rap don’t even get me started ppl still buy tupac biggie etc and listen to em I never said Nicki was bad I just said she’s something that’s just for now and will fade and your lying to yourself or absolutely stupid if you can’t make up something like stupid h** on a regular day

  60. Small_Angel July 25, 2012

Having those artist on the chart today.. i would say YES!!!

But still Having a Christina Aguilera, with the Help of Adele and Beyonce. I would say MUSIC STILL HAVE A FUTURE.

Not to forget Mariah and Celine could still make a comeback..

But anyways, it has always been this way.. Madonna is above Mariah., and Britney is above Christina. (Sales wise). It has always been the trend..

    • theman July 26, 2012

      Mariah >>>>> Madonna sales…….

      • theman July 26, 2012

It hasn’t been that way thats bs, what are u on…

  61. Jer July 25, 2012

You did not just check Jessie J as a vocalist. That swaggerjacking wannabe Katy Perry AKA wannabe Gwen Stefani catterwalling $1.29 ho and a half

    • truth tea July 26, 2012

jessie j is a vocalist. go watch her acoustic sessions.

  62. IMO July 26, 2012

I just can’t with Sam putting Alexandra Burke in a line up with top notch vocalist like Beyonce! THIS HAS TO STOP LOL

  63. TEE July 26, 2012

If Lady GaGa, Jessie J and Alexandra Burke (hew?!) are your site’s definition of ‘true vocalists’ then God help the music industry.

TBH, Beyonce and Christina Aguilera are the Whitney and Mariah of today’s music industry from a vocal standpoint. In terms of vocal ability and showmanship (Bey) and artistry (Xtina), no one comes close to either of these ladies. Fact.

    • Ashley July 26, 2012

      Cosignt

    • MC July 26, 2012

” In terms of vocal ability and showmanship (Bey) and artistry (Xtina), no one comes close to either of these ladies. Fact.” <—– Umm Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Anita Baker, Aretha Franklin, etc. no one can compare to these.

    • MRDIVABITCH July 26, 2012

You can’t in all seriousness compare to Christina’s strained off key vocals to Whitney and Mariah..

  64. #1 Beyhive July 26, 2012

All you beyonce haters should just sit down beyonce is one of the best vocalists of our time because when it comes to the actual live performance she nails it unlike artists such as jessie j and rihanna whose live performances should be used as torture

    • truth tea July 26, 2012

jessie j? im a beyhive but jessie j is amazing live!

  65. lordmir July 26, 2012

    Omg, rihanna’s voice is horrible.

      hun where have you been

      • lordmir July 26, 2012

i’ve never seen thid rude boy’s performance, it’s a shame for a supposed singer.

  66. LuhLuhLuh-Lito July 26, 2012

True vocalists will always stand the test of time case in point Madonna, although legendary, is still trying to REINVENT herself while showing her titties and ass on stage while real talents like Mariah are simply just putting out music that THEY create… True talent

    • EIEIO July 26, 2012

You’re clueless. Mariah’s next album will probably not sell that well, and if she goes on tour, she will undoubtedly not generate as much of a profit as Madonna is…because her concerts are never huge…so null and void on what you’re saying here. Mariah’s resorting to being a JLo replacement judge on a reality TV show that is fading in popularity is a much more depressing attempt at reinvention than Madonna flashing her titty on her own stage during a sold out arena stop. I repeat ARENA. Can Mariah do arenas? A year from now, I promise you that Madonna will have generated more money than Mariah has. “Last the test of time,” please. Mariah of 2012 is only a dim spark compared to who she was pre-1997.

      • JohnVidal(RIP Whitney-truegreat) July 27, 2012

We are talking about talent, not money hun. You totally missed the point lol do you stan for money or something? Does Madonna share her money with you?

    • RICHANDBLACK11(JUST LIKE BEY) July 26, 2012

HUN NO ONE IS CHECKING FOR THE HAS BEEN LOL

  67. MRDIVABITCH July 26, 2012

Nowadays the only real VOCALIST in American pop is Beyonce.
Mariah (who I love) has declined vocally, and overrated shits like Christina Aguilera can barely sing in tune or hold a note without sounding like being strangled.
However, overseas there are some great ones like Monica Naranjo, Anastacia, Vanessa Amorosi, etc.

    • ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) July 26, 2012

With all due respect, I wonder if you will ever be able to post a comment without throwing shade to Christina or calling her names…

Objectively, her low notes and her head voice are intact and still sound amazing. Her high notes lack clarity, but she’s working on that.

      • RICHANDBLACK11(JUST LIKE BEY) July 26, 2012

To be real asap I don’t thing she shaded Christina

      • MRDIVABITCH July 27, 2012

As long as her stans keep calling her a vocalist and she has not earned that title, I will keep dragging her.
You wouldn’t call “a great pianist” someone who happens to have a nice piano but never learned to play it, would you? Same with Christina, nice instrument, never learned to use it well.

      • ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) July 27, 2012

@RICHANDBLACK Well, he called her an “overrated s***” 😉

      • ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) July 27, 2012

@MRDIVABITCH I’m not attacking you, but I just think you’re being a little too harsh on her. She hasn’t utilised her middle voice properly, so she’s damaged it and that’s obvious, but she has about 3 octaves that she can still use without strain. And providing that the rumours are anything to go by, she’s working on reconstructing her voice to regain her resonance and clarity. I never said she’s the second Whitney, but in my opinion, she’s one of the most gifted and most agile vocalists of her generation.

    • Small_Angel July 26, 2012

We already heard all your hatred towards Christina

      • MRDIVABITCH July 27, 2012

Hatred? Not honey, it’s not hatred, it’s the truth. She is an overrated amateur, no more, no less. Very nice voice, but never learned to use it well, so she does not deserve to be called a vocalist. On the other hand, someone who might not have such a nice innate sound, but has learned to use their voice very very well can be called a vocalist. Examples? Barbra Streisand, Mina Mazzini, Aretha Franklin, Anastacia, Monica Naranjo, Vanessa Amorosi, Annie Lennox, etc…all of them have voices thare not conventionally pretty, but they can sing circles around Christina and her “nice tone”.

    • Small_Angel July 27, 2012

      Yawn***

      • MRDIVABITCH July 27, 2012

What’s wrong, sweetie? ran out of justifications for your fave’s shortcomings?

    • Small_Angel July 27, 2012

      zZZZzz…

      • MC the place to be!! July 27, 2012

whoever is this needs to broaden their horizons in music and get out beyonce’s ass

      • irene46 July 27, 2012

        @ mr diva…

you continue to underrate importance of ‘tone’ to one’s ear. if the “tone isn’t there then, to most, what is there is pretty irrelevant. flat tone=no good. shrill tone (bey…sometimes)=worse. when i first heard her sing ‘listen’ from ‘dreamgirls’ it was like sucking on a lemon. actually her voice varied between shrill and flat in that song. after my ears stopped bleeding it grew on me. i like bey so all you beehive babies move back.

you claim “you wouldn’t call “a great pianist” someone who happens to have a nice piano but never learned to play it ” however, if a great pianist is playing a piano that’s out of tune (tone) using his expert technique won’t do a thing to make it sound good.

  68. Real Talk July 26, 2012

Those live pre recorded vocals of Beyonce’s really got yall fooled, lol.

  69. Chels July 27, 2012

    You forgot Leona 🙁

  70. MRDIVABITCH July 27, 2012

    @IRENE 46

Actually, being out of tune is not one of the innate qualities of a voice such as tone is. Intonation is controlled by the brain and by the level of musicianship one has developed. That’s why your girl is so often out of tune, ‘coz her musicianship is rather mediocre.

So no. Your analogy is completely wrong. Let’s put it this way:
    – A $100, 000 Steinway piano being played badly; with notes out of tune and banging on the keys in a vulgar and unrefined manner…is simply not good.
On the other hand, a great pianist playing a cheap $50 Casio keyboard with musicianship, refinement, precision, etc…that is MUSIC.

In other words, having a great instrument does not make someone a great singer.
But in any case, in my opinion Christina does not have a great voice. The fact that she can’t even belt a decent C5 (a not sitting in the very middle of the voice) shows that her instrument itself is of mediocre quality. And lack of training cannot take all the blame for it, because people like Vanessa Amorosi or Monica Naranjo never had formal training and yet they belt out C6’s with ease, support and perfect intonation.

    • irene46 July 28, 2012

      @ mrdiva…

ok. i’m not a music expert as we’ve discussed before. but explain why i prefer the sound of christina’s voice (minus the screaming) over bey’s even though you say beyonce has good technique.

because you claim her voice is of mediocre quality (which many singers would disagree) does not mean that training wouldn’t help her. you would say that training helped you, right?

      • MRDIVABITCH July 28, 2012

Yes, training helped me immensely, I started with very little talent whatsoever, though with a naturally large voice in volume and range. What I lacked was control and precision.

Anyway, why you prefer Christina’s voice is a matter of taste. I do like Christina – sometimes – in songs like the original recording of “What a girl wants” that is in a lower key and keeps the vocal acrobatics to a minimum, or in other similar things where she croons. It is when she tries to do things she does not have the vocal ability to really handle properly, that I truly dislike her.

But my point was that tone by itself does not make a voice a superior instrument. Take for example Karen Carpenter or Judy Garland…both wonderful tones, rich, warm, etc…but one cannot say in all honesty they had better instrument than someone like Mina Mazzini or Aretha Franklin, whose tones are not as “nice” but their voices show far more possibilities.

      • irene46 August 3, 2012

what i don’t understand about christina’s voice is she has a clean whistle range (at least to my untrained ear) but some of the high notes below whistle range sound sour at times. why?

yeah, karen and judy did have great tone but did you mean their range was limited. they did seem to stay within certain vocal boundaries.

        are you still singing opera?

  71. MRDIVABITCH July 28, 2012

    @ASAP

The middle voice is the very core of the sound, if it is unhealthy and damaged, the rest of the voice goes down too. That’s why her low notes are mushy and her high notes (above the staff) are pure unsupported airy falsetto. I am not being harsh on her, because SHE called her a vocalist without truly deserving to be called that. If she had made a career singing within her tiny comfort range such as in the original version of “What a girl wants”, I would have more respect for her.

  72. kandi August 3, 2012

If u people haven’t notice……the voice died on February 11…after hearing whitney Houston voice, nothing else will every sound the same….so yess true vocals are dead.
