From The Vault: Jennifer Lopez – ‘If You had My Love’

Published: Sunday 29th Jul 2012 by David

Many in the entertainment industry are routinely branded ‘triple-threats’. Yet, while the validity of most claims are merely smoke and mirrors, Pop diva Jennifer Lopez not only embodies the title – she is one of the most pronounced examples.

At a time when the Latin beauty is releasing her first Greatest Hits compilation celebrating a  decade plus of hits, From The Vault journeys back to where it all started. This week’s pick is Jennifer’s debut single ‘If You Had My Love’.
With Darkchild on writing and production duties, J.Lo managed to launch her music career with a resounding bang. Released during Spring 99, ‘Love’ was a Billboard #1 and reached the Top 10 of the majority of the countries it was released in.
For many industry analysts, its worldwide success was largely the by-product of its iconic music video – which, let’s just say, ticked all the boxes. Indeed Jenny is presented as the absolute full-package; this sentiment is echoed throughout the phenomenal dance break which bares strong resemblance dancer’s show reel (see: Jazz, House, Latin Soul). The virtual and voyeuristic atmosphere was also a clever touch as the internet and reality-TV were booming bombastically at the end of the millennium. Put simply, director Paul Hunter did a wonderful job introducing Lopez, the Popstar, as a charismatic, sexy dance maven with global appeal, a description which still fits nowadays.
The ex-Idol judge is among the few people who can proudly say that they have been truly successful in multiple fields of the industry. She has been a professional dancer in the early stages of her career,  has been an in demand actress since the mid-90’s and her musical credentials count many a classic. Still, we want to know, according to you:

Is Jennifer Lopez the ultimate Triple-Threat diva?

No i would rather watch her movies than hear her non singing behind! She is a good actress and an ok dancer but her movies are good!

    • RICHANDBLACK11(JUST LIKE BEY) July 29, 2012

I will say she sings better than rihanna, and rihanna don’t stand a chance on the stage against her either.

      • RICHANDBEAUTIFUL(JUST LIKE RIH)143 MILLION+++ July 30, 2012

B**** YOU STAY PRESSED ABOUT RIHANNA MORE THAN US RIHANNA NAVY OFFICERS!! B**** YOU KNOW YOUR P**** IS TO DRY TO RIDE KING RIHS D***!!

    • JohnVidal(RIP Whitney-truegreat) July 29, 2012

Most of her movies are not good either. Last week a friend of mine made me watch her last one with Cameron Diaz and more and it was the same s*** all over again (u know, the type of films JLo. Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Aniston always do, in music we would call it easy generic mess 🙂

      • Pop Royalty ( F*** Yo Fav) July 29, 2012

        Glitter ?!!! 😆 😆

      • MC July 29, 2012

        @Pop Royalty ( F*** Yo Fav)

        Battleshit?! 😀 😀

      • JohnVidal(RIP Whitney-truegreat) July 29, 2012

        @pop
Are u serious? We are talking about triple threats (although generic). Not Mariah or other memorable musical acts 🙂

      • irene46 July 29, 2012

        @ pop royalty july 29 1:50pm…

        glitter? how about gili?!

  2. King Z July 29, 2012

Of course she’s the ultimate triple threat! umm…right after diana ross, janet jackson, madonna, whitney houston, and beyonce.

    • ihadafakepregancy(just like bey) July 29, 2012

Beyknce cant act! Thats the difference!

      • Gilberto July 29, 2012

Jennifer can’t act and can’t sing! Thats the difference!

      • Pop Royalty ( F*** Yo Fav) July 29, 2012

Beyonce is NOT a threat to anybody. esp to J.LO !! Beyonce copied J.Lo’s career path.

      • irene46 July 29, 2012

Beyonce is NOT a threat to anybody. esp to J.LO !! Beyonce copied J.Lo’s career path.
        ======================================================
        @ pop royalty 1:40p…

step into reality! where are you dragging that from? never mind…we know.

if she did copy jlo’s career (which she didn’t) she’s had a hell of a lot more success with it. jlo is far from the only female that sings(?) dances and acts. bey even writes songs which makes her a quadruple threat.

bey started out in a group, she’s done collabs with other singers (not rappers), she was doing commercials before jlo how the hell did she copy jlo?

  3. Creole bOy July 29, 2012

No, not really….she can’t sing I would say if anyone Vanessa Williams..

  4. Lucia July 29, 2012

The song still shits and this was an innotive video, way ahead of its time

way before youtube, social networking sites, tumblr etc

  5. DIGGA BEY July 29, 2012

Nope! I like Jlo and all but shes not the Ultimate Diva. Ultimate Diva must also have a supreme voice. Which Jlo doesnt. Shes definitely one of the top ones but not the one!

    • number1k9 July 29, 2012

Re-read the question posed. It doesn’t say “Ultimate Diva” but “Ultimate TRIPPLE THREAT Diva”

  6. Mikee25 July 29, 2012

Yes she is a triple threat diva because she was successful and made an empire with all 3…whether u like her or not ….. She made it big in all areas……. That’s a triple threat diva!!! Plus she’s s*** as hell!!

  7. ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) July 29, 2012

I like the video and the song. It’s one of her best! I hope urban pop J Lo makes a comeback at some point 🙂

As far as triple threat divas go, I think J Lo is the closest it gets. She’s not precisely THERE, given that she’s not a great singer, but I don’t think there’s anybody else who has done better than her in all 3 fields, so I guess she wins by default.

P.S : I don’t think many will agree, but if Aaliyah hadn’t passed away, I think she would have shown a lot of potential in terms of vocal, dancing and acting skills. Just my opinion 😎

    • Pop Royalty ( F*** Yo Fav) July 29, 2012

      THIS !!

but ppl liked AAliyah’s Style the most , i don’t think ppl think of her as a vocalist tho. she’s good ! but she is as good as JLo when it comes to vocals ! and that’s my opinion.

      • Stephen July 29, 2012

Aaliyah was a better vocalist than J.Lo

      • number1k9 July 29, 2012

I agree with both of you, to some extent.

I too personally didn’t think Aaliyah was that extraordinary of a vocalist. Good but not stellar!

That said, one person once mentioned that if she had been alive today, they thought she’d be a bigger actress than singer. I could picture that myself. Sorta like Many Moore, ppl forget she actually began singing at age 16, cause her movie career has eclipsed her music career.

J.Lo is def. the closest by far who have achieved success greatly in all three fields whether you like her vocals/music or acting/movies.

      • Stephen July 29, 2012

Number1k9, if she wasn’t extradordinary, she couldn’t have been able to record certain songs like “Journey to the Past”, and one thing about Aaliyah is that she seemed to know her voice and its limits, she knew the difference between being able to sing and knowing how to sing

      • irene46 July 29, 2012

aailyah was known in the r & b industry as having a beautiful singing voice since she was 15. old school singers (gladys knight…etc) gave her much credit for her singing abilities. she was definitely not a studio created singer.

      • Stephen July 30, 2012

Aaliyah had a very beautiful-sounding voice, unlike some other acts like you know who

  8. Kingphoenix July 29, 2012

This was such an irrelevant post that you tried and failed. Jlo can’t even sing…s*** she is doing her first tour at 40! She was a good dancer, but can’t compare to someone like Janet. She was not a strong singer, prolly couldn’t even out sing Janet!lol And the only good acting she has really done was in Selana…so no. She is not the Ultimate Triple Threat DIva…the Ultimate Opportunitst, maybe.

    • RICHANDBLACK11(JUST LIKE BEY) July 29, 2012

      true tee’s

    • WATCH YO’ MOUFF July 29, 2012

Because she’s an actor NOT a singer.

  9. RICHANDBLACK11(UNLIKE RIHANNA) July 29, 2012

    SHE IS ALRIGHT

  10. WATCH YO’ MOUFF July 29, 2012

    It must’ve been LDCAS instead

  11. JohnVidal(RIP Whitney-truegreat) July 29, 2012

A pity she fails in music since she can´t sing and doesn´t contribute to the music she releases (which by the way is also average at best)
Her movies are almost always the same type of generic comedy except for 3 exceptions. She is decent as an actress, nothing more (obviously so much better than Beyonce)
    She dances well
She looks so good, in fact I think it was always about her s** appeal more than anything
Overall, I can understand her success and why she was hot in the past. But it ends there. Nobody is interested in that for long and these type of artists don´t remain, she is not timeless or memorable, don´t care if she is able to do many different things

    • Pop Royalty ( F*** Yo Fav) July 29, 2012

How U say no one is interested in JLO , what the f*** are u smoking lately @JOhn ? it is one thing to be a MC lamb , but that doesn’t mean to put JLO down just cuz she shitted on what’s left of MC’s career !! MC did it to herself, she made easy generic songs , how u gonna call JLO generic and untalented while your fav releases songs like “obsessed” and “touch my body” ?! and then u shade JLo’s songs ?!! at least JLO sing about what she knows about , Clubs and dancing !!! and the perfect business woman with her won empire !! A f*****’ BRAND ! N**** please ….. , i like MC , don’t make me burn her for u.

      • JohnVidal(RIP Whitney-truegreat) July 29, 2012

Sorry @pop but that was a mediocre argument. I analized JLO´s career and “talents”. Never mentioned Mariah on here and couldn´t care less about their supposed rivality. JLo ended WHAT? Please
I have a friend who is crazy about JLo and she drives me mad, so I focus on JLo too much, nothing about true great Mariah Carey has to do with it. In fact if it wasn´t for that friend of mine I don´t think JLo would be in my vocabulary. Only timeless artists remain in my memory for long 🙂

      • MC July 29, 2012

who the hell are you to criticize MC when you are a rihanna stan and all she makes is generic music….lol. Sit down boo, you are making a fool out of yourself ______/

  12. Pop Royalty ( F*** Yo Fav) July 29, 2012

the Word “DIVA” was created for J.LO point blank and a f*****’ PERIOD

    • MC July 29, 2012

oh really? so the word “diva” wasn’t created for Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Aretha Franklin, Anita Baker, Patty Labelle, Celine Dion, etc.

      • JohnVidal(RIP Whitney-truegreat) July 29, 2012

It seems it was created for talentless marketing products like Rihanna, JLo and Britney 🙂 Yeah the world is f***** up nowadays

    • irene46 July 29, 2012

the word diva created for jlo?! now who’s smokin’ what?

“diva’ was originally meant for females who are 100% when it comes to singing talent. that would definitely lock out rhihanna, britney, jlo and all the other studio singing creations.

  13. TeamBreezy July 29, 2012

Jlo is by FAR the PRIME and PREMIER example my generation has seen of what a Triple Threat truly is

    #WithOutdAdoubt

How many of your faves have had a #1 Album #1 Single and #1 Movie in the same week??..ill wait

    • Jayla July 29, 2012

      EXACtly!!!!!!

      • irene46 July 29, 2012

and if it wasn’t for amer id and the media giving her a pass from the stench of her album ‘love’s’ debut ( 63,000k ) instead of creaming her the way they did christina for ‘bionic (120,000k) her career would still be in the gutter.

let’s not forget how ja rule snitched on tommy m. for jocking jlo in an effort to kill mc’s career (ja rule’s career’s been in the toilet every since).

i think jlo’s a good actor but her movies haven’t been worth a damn for years.

  14. number1k9 July 29, 2012

Fact of the matter is, and a few have mentioned/pointed it out…

Jennifer Lopez is the closest thing to it to come from the 1990s-present. Yes she is the closest thing that there is to a Tripple Threat Diva!

You do not have to like her acting/movies, nor her vocals/music, you really can not deny her dancing ability (even if it isn’t as good as during her prime)….

No one else has had as much success as Jennifer Lopez has in all three categories as her. And no ppl, Beyonce’s movies are not good, and her roles are terrible OR the wide opinion of her being a terrible actress are true. I mean ‘Obsessed,’ really! ! !

    • Virtuoso Intellect July 30, 2012

Whether or not Beyonce’s movies are good is a matter of opinion. Have they been successful? Hell yeah. In fact i’ll say Bey is a more bankable box office draw than Jlo. Most jlo films are freaking duds , turkeys and the numbers agree

  15. DIGGA BEY July 29, 2012

The word Diva was originally created for the likes of Diana Ross and Aretha! Females that brought magic to a stage. With larger than life personalities. Thats NOT and will never b Jlo! Sorry. Luv Jlo but u gots to b the epitome of Delusional to even compare Jlo & Mariah! Mariah is a legend due to her Supreme voice and record breaking sales! A True Diva! Jlo has become Legendary due to her hussell. Shes a game changer for Latinos n Hollywood. Theres no comparison. Jlo had a booming music career but it could and will never rivals Mimi’s! And lol @ simple minded kids that keep saying KING B copyed Jlo. So i guess she invented the blonde glam look. Well Marilyn to Madonna to Mariah have had that look. I guess people are mad that Jlo was running things until 2003, until a certain Bish shut that down lol. Jlo will never = up too, KING B & Mimi. Sorry fans. #s dont lie, industry insiders, music peers and music accomplishments show Jlo will never see KING B & especially Mimi!

    • MC July 29, 2012

      co-signed

    • Lucia July 29, 2012

      LMFAO

Jlo has WAY MORE SUCESSS right across the industry than Bey

LEGITMALLY SOLD MOREWIDE RECORDS 70 MILLION
2BILLION AT THE WORLD BOX OFFICE
      2BILLION IN FRAGRANCE SALES

Bey can KEPP HER BOUGHT AWARDS AND INFLATED RECORD SALES

AND MARIAH WHO LOL THIS IS NOT THE 90S
MariAh sitting in JLOS AI seat with LESS MONEY

      • MC July 29, 2012

Beyonce will go down in history as one of the best entertainer and performers and Mariah will go down as one of the best singers of all time…..which I cannot say for J-lo. Do you think anyone 20-30 years from now will say I want to sing like J-lo or be an entertainer like J-lo? That’s right it won’t ever happen. J-lo got here because of her hussle not her talent, which is good because she has got none.

    • Jayla July 29, 2012

Beyonce is so irrelevant right now, you all try so hard to keep her relevant, Mariah > Beyonce

  16. Jayla July 29, 2012

I don’t understand why people hate so much, I amthe biggest Mariah fan , but as far as triple threat J. Lo is that chick…. Receipts don’t lie, and her movies rarely flop, & her dancing is incredible, the Best dancer of our generation

    • MC July 29, 2012

I am cool with J-lo, but when those crazed stans try to talk s*** about J-lo ending Mariah’s career, then they just asking for trouble. Mariah and J-lo are incomparable…

      • Jayla July 29, 2012

They are TOTALLY incomparable, J. Lo is the ultimate entertainer, Mariah is the greatest vocalist Alive, of course Mariah wins regardless but thats not the subject at hand, the subject is triple threat and you have to give it to jennifer… Ignore the crazed fans because some people like to just hate,

  17. S****** Blonde July 29, 2012

She is a good actress, no Angelina Jolie but she can act, She is a decent singer (no one has ever put her on the vocalist list), she is a successful business woman, the best in the game After Madonna, she knows how to make money, she’s a great dancer and designer, great performer, i can see her at 50 still dancing like Madonna because she has energy and dance better than girls half her age. The word Triple-Threat diva, is to reference somone who can do alots of things, so she is the definition of this, just like Cher is, i’m not here for things like, she’s untalented, she can’t sing blah, blah, blah….she is the Ultimate Triple Threat diva of Music, Deal with it.

  18. francois July 29, 2012

    i <3 J.LO

  19. Declan July 29, 2012

Jennifer Lopez is the REAL deal. Her acting is underrated, but has got her acclaim see Selena, El Cantante, The Cell, Out Of Sight just to name a few. She has has success in three different field and for over three different decades. The fact that Jennifer Lopez is STILL relevant now is a true testament to her talent. No one can get this far without a few stalls in their career, but On The Floor proved to everyone that don’t count a talented performer out. LOVE YOU J.LO!!!

    • number1k9 July 30, 2012

You are completely right, who else has had success like her in so many different avenues over the course of the last 3 decades….

Especially when only comparing ppl from 90s-present. Nobody else comes to mind.

And you cannot say Beyonce because she wasn’t acting in the 90s.

  20. Phi Phi Binks Labeijah July 30, 2012

J.Lo Is The Queen !!! & All You Haters Will Deal and Bow Down !!!

  21. chillin July 30, 2012

haha Haters gonna stay mad..trying to compare EVRYTHING to Beyonce..im a Beyonce fan…but this does say TRIPLE threat..and facts are facts..JLO is that b*tch..liek someone stated earlier..who hels had a number ONE – SINGLE, ALBUM, & MOVIE in the same week….regardless of her singing abilities..she has been successful inthe music industry…check the facts

  22. Tbozfan10 July 30, 2012
