Aaliyah’s Brother: “There Will Be No New Album…Supported By Our Family”

Published: Tuesday 7th Aug 2012 by Sam

Though only three weeks remain until the 11th anniversary of Aaliyah‘s death, the drama surrounding how her post-humous career should be handled appears to be at its most ferocous.

For years, rumours of a biopic and new album have swirled and swirled, with the first proper substantiation of either manifesting in rapper Drake‘s “collaboration” with the late star, ‘Enough Said’.

Following the melee of emotions the Noah Shebib track stirred up, as well as suggestion that both Drizzy and Timbaland may be involved in an album of sorts, the ‘Rock The Boat’ singer’s brother, Rashad Haughton (pictured above), has spoken up and out.

Check out what he had to say after the jump…

Taking to Aaliyah’s official Facebook page, Haughton wrote:

“there is no official album being released and supported by the Haughton family.” -Rashad Haughton (regarding upcoming album release rumors)

*******

Interesting and somewhat saddening. For, Rashad’s comments point to there being drama of sorts between the star’s immediate family and her label Blackground (which ironically is run by her her uncle Barry Hankerson).

Anyone’s who’s followed the trajectory of her “career” post-passing will know that her brother’s comments echo the long-held sentiment of the family (i.e. no interest in releasing anything new. At all). Yet, the Blackground logo on Drake’s single cover (below) all-but-confirms that the label are part of the “reboot” of her career.

Granted Drake’s love for Ms. Haughton is admirable (albeit a bit creepy), we’re more inclined to side with the immediate family here. Perhaps for different reasons, however.

For, as the post-humous releases of Amy Winehouse and Michael Jackson have shown, too much political tomfoolery tends to engulf such efforts – leaving fans with broken promises and a bunch of unfinished demos. Hence, we’d prefer to keep spinning Aaliyah’s catalogue of classics instead getting our hopes up for something stellar which turns out sour.

Who knows, perhaps this seemingly inevitable release will be handled well and introduce the singer’s undeniable talent to a new generation. Time will tell…

Wow. That sucks. It was so great to hear her on a new track. I had forgotten how much I missed hearing her voice. I hope the family will open their hearts and let us hear Aaliyah’s voice again. I have faith that Drizzy and the label can make some phenomenal pieces of music.

Drake def shouldn’t be the one releaseing her music if anything it should be missy or timberland…and btw how can Drake do this if the family doesn’t support it I don’t get it he never knew her sooo….?

    • Stans Make Me LOL August 7, 2012

I agree, if they are gonna release anything, Missy and Timberland need to be all over it, not some over the top creepy fan.

        lol exactly !!

        COSIGN!!

      • James227 August 7, 2012

Right!! I never wanted to go there but we have not heard a word from Missy & Timberland as of yet. The only one who has spoken out was Aaliyah’s brother. Now could it be that Missy & Timberland already got paid by Drake & Co? I’m not going to react until I hear something from Missy & Timberland. But it really seems strange that only the brother has spoken out thus far. Greed is one of the most deadly sins.

      • mobbin per usual August 7, 2012

I’ve already told you people, Drake is the creepy “OBSESSIVE TYPE”! He seems to only pursue women he cannot have, 1st Rihanna and now Aalyiah. Whose next Mother Taresa? Girl BYE….

      • RELLY August 7, 2012

Actually TIm did speak on it a few days ago, stating that Drake should not be doing anything without he and Missy, and I totally agree!

    • DenimJunkieKidd August 7, 2012

you didn’t see that timberland will be producing some songs on the album….reading is FUNdamental kids

  5. Stans Make Me LOL August 7, 2012

I agree with Aaliyah’s Bro. Let the woman and her music rest in peace. Whilst she was alive she released AMAZING music that is still loved and sampled to this day, the music industry needs to leave it at that. I cant even express how upset I was when they released Amy Winehouses posthumous album, it was full of songs that clearly weren’t ready to be released and I dont want them to do the same to Aaliyah; it comes across as shadey and money grabbing.

  6. Roc August 7, 2012

Does it matter? Aaliyah fans have been waiting for music since forever If its a great quality I’m good with it. Her family shouldn’t so selfish

    • truth(the one and only u b****) August 7, 2012

and you should clean yo p**** u F**!!

      • James227 August 7, 2012

Aaliyah fans has been waiting? Wating for Aaliyah to rise from the dead. Let the woman and her music R.I.P unless the family wants to do Aaliyah greatest hits.

      • J August 7, 2012

I cant even f*** with Roc.. “waiting”.. wtf… b**** buy some GETSMART pills

    • Nik August 7, 2012

I think it’s the fans who are being selfish. She’s left so much behind for us to cherish and remember her by. Her family has the right to withhold anything of hers because she was their baby. I can understand them not wanting unfinished music to be produced and potentially being a disaster. Once the album is released it can not be taken back, and if it sucks, it’s not like Aaliyah can come to life to show them how it should of been done.

  7. Frachella August 7, 2012

I love Aaliyah and am dying for anything unheard of from her, but this makes me sad becaue I really love and respect Rashad, and know how close he was to her.

  8. Viciousss August 7, 2012

IMO very few post humous releases are for the fans, most are all about the money.

Especially when the label had invested money in the singer and were not able to see a return on their investment.

Drake needs to gtfo with the bs, yes he can love the girl but he should respect her family and her spirit. I doubt she’d want her music released against the wishes of her family amid controversy.

People need to let it go. It hurts when people we loved and admired died but clinging to post humous releases insults their memory and hurts their legacy. Time to accept the loss and enjoy the music SHE gave to us, not this grave digging s***.

    • James227 August 7, 2012

      !!!!!!!!

  9. Eric August 7, 2012

The Blackground Records logo does NOT mean that they’re a part of the venture and in conflict with Aaliyah’s immediate family. Drake had someone photoshop his face in some of Aaliyah’s photos and could just as easily have pasted together the single cover in question. In fact, I have those very same logos on file myself, and I know as a graphic designer how easy it is to alter colors and make something appear official.

  10. David August 7, 2012

I knew they were not going to support that b*******

  11. Aaliyah Is Queen B**** August 7, 2012

Aaliyah’s family has been very adamant about NOT releasing new material or doing a biographical movie. I wish they would but I respect their wishes. They knew Aaliyah better than any music exec or fan and are only doing what she herself would want to be done. They said she liked being a mystery and all of these new projects would go against her own wishes, not to mention could taint her brand.

        @Aaliyah is Queen B****

I didn’t think of it that way. Aaliyah was mysterious and she knew how to make that interesting. At first, I honestly wasn’t mad at Drake for bringing us new Aaliyah music, but without the brother’s approval this does change some things.

    • Joseph August 7, 2012

That’s right they tired that same s*** with MJ. Using somebody else’s voice pertending it was MJ. The label with their greedy motherfucking self put out an album that didn’t even do well at all twice. I believe the only people buying MJ albums way after he died was the record label. This and any other album from Drake at this point should be banned or boycotted.

  17. credits August 7, 2012

Drake needs to have a talk with her family.

    • MC August 7, 2012

He obviously doesn’t care, because he already did that song and planning on making an album so…

      • oneluve25 August 7, 2012

We really don’t know what is going on, remember media can make you think one thing and it becomes another. I remember the family said that they were working on a couple of albums and a movie after she died. Now they do not want any part of it, its really weird to me. Me personally she was a entertainer and her music should live on. Just like Elvis, Michael jackson, Whitney Houston , James Brown, Ray Charles exc…. I don’t understand why the family wants the world to forget her , that doesn’t make sense. There is something more to it than what we know.

      • MC August 7, 2012

@oneluve25 Maybe the family just wants her to be remembered for the things she did while she was alive, because at least then she was in charge. I don’t think her family wants her to be forgotten, nor will she. As for the others you mentioned, they are not remember for the songs that came out AFTER they died,, they are praised and loved for their works while they were alive. I think her family, especially her brother, and Timberland and Missy knew what she was about and what she wanted and what she didn’t than those like Drake, who didn’t know her personally. We don’t know if she would’ve liked the song that will be on this album and if she would approve, so the way I see it is to just let her rest in peace…

      • Joseph August 7, 2012

But Elvis,MJ, Whitney,JB Ray Charles had albums out with their greatest hits. Not what Drake’s doing. This is cold and cruel.

  18. ILOVEKELLY August 7, 2012

you have to respect her family but then again she would want her music to live on she has alot of fans missing her. I think that her family should release a album of unheard music and do a bio to please Aaliyah fans because the fans are the ones having them sitting on millions….

    • Aaliyah Is Queen B**** August 7, 2012

If they were a money hungry family then they would do just that; release material she would disapprove of just to make a paycheck. Aaliyah’s family knows her better than any fan and are only doing what she would want them to do.

  19. Talk That Talk August 7, 2012

Are you f****** serious, you gonna insult someone who is dead. That just goes to show how you have no morals or respect for the dead or people who paved the way for people like Rihanna to have a strong platform. It’s people like you that make this world a sick place. You know nothing of Aaliyah’s success or the impact she had. And how many men has Rih Rih f*****? (Chris, Drake, Matt kemp, Ashton etc.)

With all due respect to the Haughton family .. we forget that Aaliyah was a public figure who was adored and loved by many fans til this day ….to deny the public of fans who supported and continue to support would be a slap in the face to the fans awaiting new material … no one.. no ONE complains about posthumous Tupac albums that many people have and enjoy .. thus the reason why hes had more albums released after his death than prior …

I want Aaliyah music, done tastefully and authentic …

    NP- Enough Said

    • Viciousss August 7, 2012

It’s not tasteful because its not Aaliyah.

Like someone else said what you’d be getting is the music she didn’t think was good enough to release, songs she was still tinkering with, songs she no longer loved and whatever was left on the cutting room floor.

Public figure or not the woman is DEAD.

She gave you her life and all the music she believed in while she was alive, she doesn’t owe you or the public s*** now that her soul is in heaven. Let her have peace.

      • TeamBreezy August 7, 2012

Where you are WRONG is that Aaliyah isnt the first, nor will she be the last deceased musician to have music released posthumously.. and simply because it was unreleased does not mean she “no longer loved the song” or “didnt think it was good enough” .. what are you talking about? You speak nonsense because I am sure that a fan of Aaliyah you are not … no one complains about unreleased Tupac music that he allegedly (according to you) did not “love” or “feel was good enough” because fans appreciate it by supporting (meaning buy) …

Trust me, Aaliyahs album will be supported by ME and MANY other fans that grew up loving her ..She is resting well in PEACE and you best believe that your negative comment isnt hurting that one bit! .. so get a clue

        Aaliyah will ALWAYS
        RIP

  21. S****** Blonde August 7, 2012

This is sad, this always happen with dead artists, she’s the last victim.

  22. john August 7, 2012

i understand why they dont want to release any new music. but can you do a aaliyah biopic, aaliyah merchandise, or aaliyah videos games.to keep her legacy alive.

  23. john August 7, 2012

barry henkerson is very shady you see what happened between and toni braxton. you seen what happened between him and timbaland. rashad is fine by the way

  24. I’m not throwing shade, but… August 7, 2012

It’s 11 years too late! Aaliyah in her cut short career left a legacy of decent music, and Demos are exactly that, songs that wasn’t enough to make an album, a b-side or a bonus track, so why record labels insist on releasing mediocre music for thirsty fans who will either download it for free, fans who will boycott it or fans and critics who will slate it because its not worthy, ruining what intentional musical path the artist was following. Aaliyah’s songs carried her essence and feeling that projected through the relationship with the writer and producers. Although it was nice to hear her voice on something new after such a long time the track itself seemed empty and lacking something. I hope this is the only track thats released and her family’s wishes are respected

  25. I’m not throwing shade, but… August 7, 2012

    * Lets hope no Whitney is released, or anymore Amy

  26. Eric August 7, 2012

There’s no such danger as Aaliyah being forgotten and her legacy needing new music to stay alive. If you believe in the excellence of her work, it needs no upgrades and new additions. With respect to Aaliyah, she wasn’t the type of artist to have a track thrown at her without any thought to what she wanted her vocals to be. It’s not fair to Aaliyah and to her family for any producer to try and manipulate her voice to fit a track that she may not have even liked. I remember Tim saying he has some stuff, but I think the reason we haven’t heard it is likely because it wasn’t at a stage for Tim to comfortably complete the song without Aaliyah’s input. Part of what made the AALIYAH album so cutting edge was the gift of Aaliyah herself. We don’t have that anymore and it’s time to accept that and celebrate everything that she did bring to completion. That’s the greatest tribute we can give her is to remember the all-around entertainer she proved herself to be.

  27. ENOUGH ONIKA August 7, 2012

People just need to enjoy the music she released when she was with us and let her rest in peace. The music industry needs to focus on finding quality artists like Aaliyah instead of trying to bring those who’ve passed back. Drake is a creep for one thing and two, if the family does’t want her music touched, respect that and move on! It’s probably hard for them to now have the constant reminder of her tragic passing due to media crap.

  28. TALES FROM THE KRIMBERLY August 7, 2012

These family members of dead artists get on my nerves

  29. soulmusiclover August 7, 2012

i totally understand why he thinks that! i’m a drake fan, but who is he to decide to make that album, without the persons she worked with a lot, and without the agreement of her family? i will not be supporting that either

    • Wayne August 7, 2012

Hugh Drake fan but after this stunt, I would never purchase nothing else he puts out nor go to any of his concerts. I could care less if he said he changed his mind to not do the music but to me the damage is done. I see what kind of person Drake really is about. Go back to Canada Drake it seems like you are not ready for the US pulling a stunt like this.

  30. MISHKA August 7, 2012

    Finally, somebody is stepping up!

Drake needs counselling, he is SICK.

Anybody who is not Timothy or Missy should leave Aaliyah’s music the fuxx alone!

  31. ChittyChitty August 7, 2012

Missy and Timbaland need to work on their own albums.

  32. Melinda August 21, 2012

No one knows what Aaliyah had wanted except her family they are not ready to fully let her go thats their only daughter drake needs to leave that alone, let her rip people still make up rumors about her wheb she was alive & now

  33. Melinda August 21, 2012

Her family shared Aaliyah with the world & now they want her to them self thet are not ready to put her bio out or any albums I understand alot they dont want u to forget her & her music but, they just not ready Her family knows what best for her & what her wishes was.just leave her alone now its been about 11 years now let her rip

  34. Scorpio92 July 19, 2014

I grew up listening to Aaliyah. I always admired her beauty, grace, and style. I think it’s best if her family’s wishes were respected. Allow this beautiful angle to Rest Peacefully and her family and loved ones need time to decide when to move forward with any bios or unheard music from Aaliyah.
