As far as Christina is concerned, I gave my opinion on the promo shot. It was fair. She’s overly airbrushed and gurl is only halfway relevant now because she’s on The Voice. If that show was to go off the air tomorrow, she would be where Jennifer Lopez is right now: irrelevant and looking for that next hit. I think that she has the potential to be amazing vocally but she needs to get off her high horse and take vocal lessons.
And I don’t support gimmick acts. I like Rihanna because she doesn’t take herself too seriously (unlike Christina and Gaga) and she makes good Pop music. That isn’t a crime and my musical taste is just fine, boo. You’re dismissed.
This song is relatively new to the general public. It hit the web in April and radio only started featuring it in the last week of May. So technically, it’s only been out for 2 months. Not everyone is on the blogs and computer savvy like a lot of the people frequenting this blog. Also, you have to understand that gays tend to be ahead of the curve when it comes to music, so generally they are the ones demanding a video be released asap. It’s been picking up a lot of radio play and has since jumped from 10 spots to 30 last week. I think her record label was waiting for it to climb the charts before dropping the video.
Brandy’s fans are not delusional at all. Out of all the stans I would say they are the most sane. They just tend to be loyal individuals who are real fans, not on someones d*** because they are “relevant” or on top of the charts at that moment. People like that aren’t real fans but are only desperately trying to fit in with the crowd because everyone says “this is whats hot”.
Brandy fans love Brandy just because of her undeniable talent, genuine spirit and mainly because most people grew up with her. She was raised on TV and we were raised watching her. Her albums are the soundtracks to our lives, especially if you are an 80’s baby. She is the first black R&B Princess who wrote the blue print on how to take over the industry. She also wrote the book on vocals, having learned from the great Whitney.
Just because she isn’t dropping albums left right and center doesn’t mean I’ll stop following her, so your argument on her relevancy or lack there of is completely void. And in case you have been living under a rock for the past 10 years, Brandy has been relevant. Full Moon released in 2002 was her most critically acclaimed album. She changed the way R&B was recording with that album, and gave the world Rodney Jerkins who all wanted her sound in the early 2000’s.
Well then let me clarify my statement: her stans that I’ve run into on this blog for the most part have been nothing but immature and hateful.
I’m actually a fan of her old music and her last two albums, “Aphrodisiac” in particular. However, that doesn’t take away from any of my earlier sentiments. I acknowledged the fact that Brandy has talent. Everyone with a good ear for music knows that she has talent. That isn’t my point. My point is that Brandy just got lost in the transition from the 90s into the early 00s sound of music. Yes, “Full Moon” was a game changing album but there has always been one main problem with Brandy; her promotion.
She wasn’t able to properly promote that record because of her pregnancy at the time and yes, her popularity did begin to wane after that album release. This new era in her music, which is being labeled as her “comeback”, should’ve been presented as a well-oiled machine in terms of promotion. As an artist (personal feelings aside) she deserves that. Her talent warrants that. Instead this song was prematurely premiered on radio and then suffered a 3-4 month waiting period before she even performed the song live for the first time. Her management is way off and it just comes across as though she isn’t her label’s main priority. That was my point.
Everyone else on here has been vocal about her lack of promotion but for some reason I’m being attacked for stating my opinion. I think that she is a majorly talented artist who unfortunately got lost in the mix and then compounded that situation with admittedly lying to her fans. Will she ever be as big as she was in the 90s again? probably not. Do I still think that she is capable of making solid or exceptional R&B music if she so desires? yes.
But this sudden dancing and trying to keep up with the kids look that she has going on right now isn’t it.
And just for the record, this is the last time that I’m going to go out of my way to justify my opinion to anyone on this blog. I’m not going to sit over here writing damn near novels to justify why I feel a certain way about an artist. My opinion is my opinion and whether you agree with it or not it isn’t going to change.

Before anyone asks, yes I did buy this song on Itunes. That’s not going to stop me from giving some honest criticism on the way this is being promoted. The song has been out since April and on the radio since May. It’s August now. That’s ridiculous! The hype is about gone for this song. No point in stans getting mad at the public for giving an honest assessment of the situation. Brandy needs to quit playing around with the teasers, drop the video, move on to another song and get serious if she wants to comeback and not flop again.

It’s obvious that they were waiting for the song to build some hype before putting out the video…and I think that was the right thing to do. Brandy’s not in her “It”-girl stage, where a single and video can be released and people will automatically flock to it. If the video had come out shortly after the song hit iTunes, there wouldn’t have been any real results and the whole thing would have flopped. They were waiting for the songs airplay to start peaking so that the video would maximize the songs hit potential. I’m glad that this is shaping up to be a slower burn. Hopefully the thing will continue to build and build, and eventually make a real dent chart-wise. One of the (many) things I hate about today’s music scene is how they release 2,3,4 singles BEFORE the album comes out. That’s too much. Focus on one at a time. I’m fine with “Put It Down” being 6 months in the making. Back in better times (the 90s), singles used to play out for that long…or longer.

Ppl are saying that Brandy is slow with her promos for her comeback album but what I realize that Brandy is using her old formula like when she first came in the game. 1st of all, Brandy didn’t have MTV tell, dairy or any type of behind the scenes documentaries in 93/94. Urban music was still breaking barriers at that time. I remember back in 93/94 they still on grudge music and gave urban listeners yo MTV raps, MTV jams then they downsized it to MTV jams countdown on a Friday night, & gave MTV grind(American bandstand/soul train type of show hosted by that white dude Eric) and they played pop, hip hop and r&b musi and that was it. On BET, Brandy didn’t hajve 106&park back then bob Johnson was still the owner & running it out of DC. Back then there was t*** summit, rap city, video soul with Donnie Simpson, & Caribbean rhythm with Rachel. The were reruns of Thea, in living color & generations. That’s the only thing Brandy had at that time and still managed to do good. Her song is still on the top 100 r& b charts for iTunes & Amazon. Plus the reason why her last album didn’t do as good because her teams her following the Beyonce/ Britney type route and it didn’t work for her. Now Brandy is going back to her old formula which for her. FYI B-rocka has been promoting, she’s been on the talk, Wendy Williams, & on good day la when she was guest starring on 90210, the game, & drop dead diva. Chick has been on a roll and it was the same way before she came out with I wanna be down. Just Brandy do Brandy & allow her to go back to her old formula.

Artists don’t even make money off selling singles/albums etc anymore, those are now tools to get people to come to their concerts/events so they CAN make money cause thats the only way you will if your an artist in todays industry. No excuse for Brandy or any other older artists. That’s why some, I’m sorry to say need to bow out gracefully because a lot of them don’t know how to adapt in this new industry (i.e. Lil Kim). I do agree, however, that Brandy’s team is taking too long to get her video out. She’s been on the charts for 9 weeks. I feel like her video should have been out by week 4 on the charts.
