Exclusive: Rico Love Dishes On New Monica Album At BET Hip-Hop Awards

Published: Tuesday 9th Oct 2012 by Sam

2012 may have brought with it Monica‘s ‘New Life’ album, however it appears the songstress is wasting no time cooking up its follow-up.

We caught up with hitmaker Rico Love at the BET Hip-Hop Awards 2012 in Atlanta recently where he dished on the project – revealing that he is executive producing the set.

Hit ‘PLAY’ to see what else he said and to check out our chats with Rick Ross, Marcus Canty, Kevin McCall and more.

The BET Hip-Hop Awards 2012 airs TONIGHT on BET at 8P/7C.

Monica neds to tke her music is another direction. She needs to work with some interesting people as well. She should really just rerelease her lates album though.

    • FAF October 10, 2012

chile where are her singles off this album? Monica is lazy
I’ma need her to have a couple more vids before she completes an era

she did this same thing on “The Makings of Me”

      • ☆Lola A♏ ★ October 10, 2012

Monica released 4 singles off her latest album and none of them did anything. The label moved on, so should we.

  2. @THE_MALEMADONNA October 9, 2012

    SUPER EXCITED

  3. Lola AM October 9, 2012

Considering their last efforts together weren’t great, I’m not looking forward to her new album. Monica works best with Missy, JD, and Bryan Michael C**.

    • credits October 9, 2012

I totally agree with you! Rico love is not to executive produce an album. 1 or 2 tracks is fine but not a whole album. i’m tired of him ‘turning the lights off’ already.

  4. missdiva October 9, 2012

Love Love Love Luv Luv Monica…..cant wait on new album true R&B legend…..
But ummm Monica pleaaeeessseee let Cuz PolowDaDon take charge on this next one!!!!!!!!

    • ☆Lola A♏ ★ October 10, 2012

Polow took charge on New Life and we saw how that turned out. Womp.

  5. MaZ October 9, 2012

In my point of view Rico Love is a better songwriter than producer.

Monica needs to work with Jermaine Dupri, Missy Elliott & Rodney Jerkins… those people know her and know how to bring the best of her vocals.

    • MelyB October 9, 2012

I so agree but would swap out Rodney for Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. Missy is probably focusing on her own album but she usually produces great tracks for Moni. I’d also like to see her work with Big Jim Wright.

  6. Chris October 9, 2012

OH HELL NO! Monica please DO NOT go into the studio with Rico Love, I am not trying to be rude and negative, but Rico Love does NOTHING for you. You are a BIG AVOCALIST and Rico Loves production isn’t meant for an artist like you.

  7. DOSSOME October 9, 2012

Rico Love again????the same guy who said “Looking 4 Myself” will be a classic?Monica is too good for Rico, she should find more serious producers

  8. Jeff October 9, 2012

Monica needs to find her beat again. Although i’m a fan, i tend to find myself listerning to older songs when everything wasn’t so ballad driven, Monica killed it on Like this & Like that but she seems to have retired too early and has started singing and producing albums as if she is a 50 year old woman. I’m older than Monica and still like to dance, she need to to look at the SWV – i Missed Us template as that is one bad ass album! the beast r&b album of the year in my opinion

    • credits October 9, 2012

Missy can bring this to a monica project, like what she did on ‘betcha’ for still standing.

      • FAF October 10, 2012

Yesss chile @Jeff! Monica thinks she’s a grandma now, LOL

  9. king z October 9, 2012

homie lucked up with a smash hit with “motivation” and “sweet dreams” now ppl lookin at him he’s a hitmaker? hardly…

mo – learn from “it all belongs to me” and “mr. wrong”, find u a new voice. atlanta is full of talent, maybe find u an up-and-comer who can bring out the best in you. u gave rico a chance, now it should be on to the next

  10. trillafood October 9, 2012

    Poor Monica

  11. bibi93 October 9, 2012

    Super!!

  12. me October 9, 2012

monica stay away fro RICO!!!!!!!!his beats are the same and lame and dont do anything good

  13. ryan October 9, 2012

Polow was the executive producer on the last one but he didn’t contribute that much and Monica jst tweeted that she’s working with Polow, Missy, Stargate, Mike Will, Red Styles, Jim Jonson and more. Rico wont necessarily do the majority of da album

  14. LOURDES October 9, 2012

Monica is a one trick pony. Everything after “After The Storm” was pretty weak. Hopefully she does something fresh, and gets some vocal lessons. When I saw her live, she sounded like a goat in a washing machine!!!! 🙁

    • credits October 9, 2012

Yea right! She is always on point when she hits the stage. And her stuff is not all that ‘weak’ it just depends on what you are into.

    • FAF October 10, 2012

      DEAD

  15. toohotfortv October 9, 2012

yes, but can we talk about Kevin McCall doe 😉

  16. team karrueche October 9, 2012

Yes!! Im really excited for monica. One thing ppl cant deny is her talent. The girl has some of the best vocals in r&b history. Loved New Life. Cant wait to hear this new stuff esp with Polo

  17. Beyonce’s Kryptonite October 9, 2012

Monica should go back to Missy Elliott, Jermaine Dupri, Rodney Jerkins and Polow Da Don. She could try working with The-Dream and Alicia Keys.

  18. YOLO October 9, 2012

Monica you are best with Bryan Michael C**, Jermaine, Missy and Dallas Austin as long as he is not tryna give you no techno s***! DO NOT and i repeat DO NOT LET RICO LOVE executive produce this. HE DID NOTHING for IT ALL BELONGS TO ME, We NEED ANOTHER STILL STANDING/ MISS THANG!!!! P.S. MOnica yu are one of the best when it comes to ROCKING THE SHORT BLACK HAIRCUT!!

    • YOLO October 10, 2012

I AINT TO sure anout POLO after the New Life album either..!!

  19. quan October 9, 2012

another flop waiting to happen LOL

  20. Absolved October 9, 2012

She needs to get off this ‘Urban AC’ kick and make more uptempo music again. Ever since the calamity that was “Every Time the Beat Drops,” she’s been trying to go the Anita Baker route and it’s too sedate for her. She’s under the impression that her fans only wanna hear ballads and midtempos in vein of “Why I Love You So Much.” Maybe here and there, but not everywhere.

  21. Asa October 9, 2012

I want a combination of Makings of Me and Still Standing personally. Raw is my s*** to this day. I love New Life, but my ideal album is a mixture of that certain flow she was going toward starting with After the Storm, but ended mostly after Everytime the Beat Drop. (which I still think is awesome personally)

But I also want to keep the mastered ballads. She is on point.

Rico managed to make a song with two incredible artists be a completely mediocre track. I hope he doesn’t ruin the next album. I have faith though. Mo knows who she is.

    • Jeff October 10, 2012

I wanna hear a combination of Miss Thang and The Boy is Mine. I really think that Monica peaked at 14 when Miss Thang came out because she sounded better than women twice her age and her vocals, runs and ad libs were sublime and the tracks were on point. then with TBIM the songs reflected her age with a good mix of ballads, mid and uptempos.

  22. pat October 10, 2012

she’s just BORING….great singer…but she needs to drum up interest from the publicin her as a person before she releases new music….maybe another reality show

  23. ASIA October 10, 2012

She needs to show versatility as an artist, and by that I don’t mean pop/techno music. Do something different with your voice, use some foreign/ethnic beats….something! I love Monica as a person, but she’s STARTING to bore me as an artist!

    • Elvick October 18, 2012

*listens to Man Who Has Everything*

      Hm?

No matter what Monica does, people will complain about it. She does versatile music, people think she “changed” *looks at Makings of Me* She does full on R&B people say she’s boring.

Well, maybe you guys just don’t actually like R&B. So shoo.

  24. sentfromupabove October 10, 2012

Monica needs to stay CLASSIC but experiment a little bit more, the way Brandy is doing… Monica proved she’s still relevant with Still Standing so there’s still room for her in the industry… i liked New Life but she has done better!!!! i think Brandy has inspired her a little bit, just like Mo inspired Brandy with Still Standing… as long as the music is good there is room for both of them!!!!

  25. tonymontana October 10, 2012

Im glad Mo coming BACK SO SOON. It’s like she never left.

  26. lola October 10, 2012

    R&B Icon Monica returns…Yessssssssssss

  27. In3d October 11, 2012

Solid R&B music all the way. Monica never did a bad album, with good promotion all her albums would sell . All these critics here …..tired of the starz gimmicks . Grow up. Brandy and Monica sure has grown into beautiful women, who hold their own.
