The “Mysteries”, a reference to the Mystery Religions, or ancient pagan religions and occult practices, are expressed through symbolism. Hall then states that “divine ideas” have been chiefly expressed, hidden and passed on to future generations through symbols, rather than language so that most people in society would never be able to understand or even notice their meaning. And the “secret doctrine” of the occult – the grand goal of all of the ancient religions, is hidden in symbols.
