Must See: Sia Soars With Rihanna’s ‘Diamonds’

Published: Thursday 29th Nov 2012 by Sam

As with most Rihanna songs, an army of writers and producers were assembled to craft her latest smash ‘Diamonds’.

Songwriter Sia Furler, whose name (and bank balance) have stretched in recent years due to her hand in writing many a Billboard hit, was one of those enlisted to cook up the star’s twelfth US #1.

And with the song achieving success on a global scale, it was only fitting that the Australian performed her handiwork at the Norweigan-American Achievement Awards last night. The event celebrated the success of Norwegian production duo Stargate – who co-produced ‘Diamonds’ with Benny Blanco and are also at the helm of most of the model’s hits.

Backed by Stargate themselves, watch Sia shine bright like a diamond after the jump…

The actual slayage! Sia nailed it; although, having followed her rise, we wouldn’t expect anything less. She’s such a stellar talent. A fact Rihanna clearly clocked on to, hence her identical rendition of Sia’s ‘Diamonds’ demo (see: same adlibs, same annunciation, same everything).

It’s a fact which re-affirms one of our main gripes with Ms. Fenty. For, like Whitney Houston, she isn’t a songwriter (believe those “credits” if you choose); however Whitney more than compensated for this by being an interpreter of song. Not only would she make any track her own, she’d deliver her own catalogue with slight differences each performance. Indeed, see if you can find an identical ‘I Will Always Love You’ showing anywhere.

Waiting.

With Rih, though, we’re still chuckling at her “Sia accent” on ‘Diamonds’. Then again, she’s chuckling at the top of the charts. Is this what the industry has come to? Models-with-mics…making it?

Your thoughts?

Rihanna did a great job with diamonds, and your clocking her for her sia accent but was all up Christina’s ass on blank page with all that sia yodeling. Rihanna has always been a great interpreter of records, and as a visual artist can bring to them things their songwriters often cant. #navy #webad #youmadd

FAF R**** SAYS THANKS FOR THE SUPPORT,,,,
The 13th word of the first verse of the first song on “Unapologetic,” the seventh album by Rihanna, is a curse, and she relishes it, hitting the syllables hard, spitting them out sharply as if she hoped they might wound someone.

      • Lax November 29, 2012

The song, “Phresh Out the Runway,” is a chaotically dense spray of boasts over a muscular, scraping beat. Rihanna sounds indignant and impressed with herself, proclaiming, “Walk up in this b**** like I own the ho.”

      • Lax November 29, 2012

Rihanna’s new album makes forays into tough sounds fit for a James Bond movie or strip clubs; at other times, she is vulnerable.

      • Lax November 29, 2012

Rihanna isn’t so much profane in language though certainly sometimes that as in presence. Of all the pop megastars of the 2000s, she is without peer when it comes to her image, which is steely and unforgiving and bulletproof, a pleasure-guided man-killer with concrete for skin.

      • Lax November 29, 2012

        Even with concrete skin,,,
That doesn’t mean she’s never hurt on “Unapologetic” (Def Jam), which is one of her best albums, along with her 2007 breakthrough, “Good Girl Gone Bad,” and her 2010 pop peak, “Loud.” But even on the most vulnerable songs, she maintains her cool, never once verging on the maudlin.

      • Lax November 29, 2012

The character on this album is the product of several years’ refining, a process that began with her 2006 single “Unfaithful,” an aching song befitting a singer with far more shading to her voice.

      • Lax November 29, 2012

Rihanna never did become a powerful singer, but by the time of “Good Girl Gone Bad,” her third album, she had begun to understand the limitations of the contours of her voice, and its advantages. She would never be the best vocalist on the pop charts, but she could be the most attitudinal, the most salacious, the most bitter. She could invent a persona as big as the songs.

      • Lax November 29, 2012

And so, over the years, as her game face froze in place, her voice cured into a weapon of emotional chill and strategic indifference. It’s decidedly unfriendly, made to give orders. It matters way more than anything she might say.

      • Lax November 29, 2012

Take “Numb,” a sinuous collaboration with Eminem that appears early on the new album. Rihanna has maybe three dozen words between the first two verses, but her meaning is clear from the delivery, which is forceful and slurry, alternating between stretched and staccato vowels.

        Ecstasyyyyyyyy

        In the air

        I don’t care

        Can’t tell me nothinnnnnnng

        I’m impaired

      • Lax November 29, 2012

Her voice does wonders for the insipid lyrics on the pomp-thick single “Diamonds,” which sounds far more like a ..

James Bond theme song than Adele’s too patient “Skyfall.”

      • Lax November 29, 2012

Rihanna is also laser-focused on “Jump,” which borrows from the Ginuwine hit “Pony” in such a brassy way that it’s difficult to fault her for it, and which, in Rihanna’s inflections, nods ever so slightly to Justin Timberlake’s “Cry Me a River.” Often Rihanna sounds bored by a lyric before she even finishes it, and just as bored by the person it’s about.

“Think I give a damn,” she sings. “Boy, don’t you know who I am/I ain’t run around chasing no dude.”

      • Lax November 29, 2012

The music is just as brutish and bruised; occasionally Rihanna shows up essentially unaccompanied, but most of her songs are built tough and layered. David Guetta contributed production to “Phresh Out the Runway” and “Right Now,” two songs with appealingly guttural edges. “Pour It Up” sounds like a track the ambient-goth outfit Salem might make for a strip club.

      • Lax November 29, 2012

The songs that are the least texturally confrontational are also by far the least successful: “Stay,” a dull, piano-driven duet with Mikky Ekko; the bland film-score-esque “Get It Over With” (apart from when she’s cursing); “Lost in Paradise,” which buzzes and hums but does not take flight.

      • Lax November 29, 2012

In a few places on this album, Rihanna is clearly emotionally invested, as on “Loveeeeeee Song,” a striking, affecting duet with Future, the Atlanta rapper-turned-singer with the digitally shattered voice. By comparison, Rihanna sounds almost church-trained, and she’s singing with a lighter touch than usual, allowing flecks of hope into her dark room:

Boy, lately, you’ve been stingy with your time

Got me wondering, I’m wondering if I’m on your mind

Boy, I just wanna be in your possession

You say I’m the one you want so come express it

The softness that comes through here is a rarity but not a revelation. She’s still singing about love as an adversarial game, and she’s still steering.

      • Lax November 29, 2012

there remains the matter of Chris Brown, her former boyfriend
The most tender, affectionate, spirited song on “Unapologetic” is called “Nobody’s Business,” and it’s the one that features Mr. Brown. Like the Michael Jackson song it borrows from (“The Way You Make Me Feel”), it’s gelatinous and smooth, and also carefree. On an album full of dyspeptic relationships, it is the breath of cool, nourishing air.

      • Lax November 29, 2012

        Aint nobody business,,,
This collaboration is, as it’s called online, pure trolling: a straight-faced provocation that’s really a big wink. If you want a sideshow, Rihanna will gladly give you a more lurid one than what you’ve been cringing in anticipation of. To make public art with the person who physically abused you is immature, pre-feminist, post-ethics. To make it cheerful and humane is just vexing.

      • Lax November 29, 2012

It doesn’t help at all that her songs with Mr. Brown the new one, and the remix of “Birthday Cake,” from her 2011 album, “Talk That Talk” are some of her best.

That’s what makes it so much more notable when she lets loose, drops her guard and just sings unvarnished. “What Now” begins with plain piano but gets to bombast by the first chorus. Still, Rihanna is doing some of her most direct, ambitious singing here. It’s the album’s one real purge, and a sign of a pulse beneath the armor:

There’s no one to call cause I’m just playing games with them all

The more I swear I’m happy, the more that I’m feeling alone

Cause I spend every hour just going through the motions

I can’t even get the emotions to come out

Dry as a bone but I just wanna shout!

    • Lax November 29, 2012

Maybe her true art isn’t singing, or appearing impenetrable, but rather playing with public expectations. She’s a brat with the tools of a pop star at her disposal to make her mischief. Keeping people guessing, or grumbling, is just another way of holding them at bay.

    • Common Sense November 29, 2012

B******* the only reason it was a hit under Rihanna is because of ALL of Rihanna exposure. Hell some s***** ass song about cake was a hit under Rihanna that says something about her brainwashed fans not about the songwriters.

  15. huh? November 29, 2012

I love Sia and everything but where in that pitchy performance did she “slay”? She sounded bad and her runs were horrible. I think Sia has a beautiful voice but she did not slay in that performance. You guys are REAL rihanna haters if you consider that to be slayage

    • RymeReason November 29, 2012

You clearly don’t understand vocal talent which explains your love and adoration for Rihanna. Sia’s voice is powerful and she has range. If glass was in there it would break. Rihanna tried to replicate her sound, no creativity or originality.

  16. OMG (Celine Dion) November 29, 2012

    Rihanna>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>.this performance…….it IS tru

    • Common Sense November 29, 2012

  17. Monstarebel (THE UNAPOLOGETIC PRINCE) November 29, 2012

if sia sang this it would be a FLOP….She knew Rihanna would make it a hit as she did (-:

  18. HOTSTUFF November 29, 2012

why are talking about Whitney houston, talk about Beyonce who changes algebra into Algeba…… Also Sia would not chart with this …

Yes rihanna’s version has some similarities , like duhhhh…..BUT
this was horrible, her voice is so raspy, pitchy, her accent is too dominant. what a mess….then Sia is like 40 , how would the visual be ? it often takes more than a song itself nowadays to be a success, the musical video is a big part of it…

Also Ciara the flop you stan for can’t sing it…so give credit for to rihanna for her vocal performance.

    • OMG (Celine Dion) November 29, 2012

You just had to mention King B’s name didn’t you?

    • HOTSTUFF November 29, 2012

yes cause, That’s who TGJ stans for, Bey, Ciara, Brandy, Rita ora and all the other flops who dont write none of their music and can be qualified as models with mics….but they keep staying on rihanna’s p**** juice.

Rihanna’s vocal performance in Diamonds is amazing. She will keep on winning while haters will be struggling to live off a flop blog.

      • FAF November 29, 2012

        @Hotstufff if Beyonce 4 #1 albums is a FLOP

Ciara multiple #1 hits and #1 album with LESS than R****’s 7 attempts ! Grammy etc. Brandy 90’s t*** icon & R&B sensation w/ her own MATTEL barbie doll
        is a flop ?

        What that make r**** ?

        12 #1 singles means nothing !

Yrs from now, ppl will remember Madonna b/c she inspires other females to copy her style

R**** changes styles every era . . .what is hers to be copied ?

A flop blog gets 3k hits off ONE post when y’all stans get pressed enough stan got y’all in a TIZZY !

      • KC November 29, 2012

@hotstuff. 1) Rihanna doesn’t write either. 2) How can you call Beyonce a model with a mike when she f****** commands that stage whether you like her style or not. Yeah shes pretty but Beyonces image isn’t the main driving force for her success unlike others. 3) And this is a flop blog that you be checking on the regular.

    • Lax November 29, 2012

      @HOTSTUFF,,,,,,LMAO…..

  19. Mark November 29, 2012

I’m a Rihanna fan, I know she don’t write ALL her songs, but she do bring something to them. Her voice is different and she CAN become great, but there’s time when I feel that she don’t try, mainly because she’s over working her self and not letting giving herself the time to become great. She cut LOUD too fast, the main hits on TTT could’ve be added to loud as a re-release like how Take A Bow and Disturbia was on GGGB. But at the same time as a fan, I get a new album every year, but you have to know the amount of time to be missed. Some stay gone so long that they’re forgotten. I think she should do 1 and a half years album instead of every November. Drunk On Love and Roc Me Out could have been singles for now til next Spring.

    • Common Sense November 29, 2012

      “She CAN become great”
I disagree. She’s released 7 albums already. If there was greatness in her we would have seen it by now. She’s just an industry manufactured entertainer that releases albums like McDonald’s releases Big Macs.

  20. Beyonce’s Weave November 29, 2012

So Rihanna had a number one album and number one single all in the same week?? Lmao I don’t even care about Samantha’s shade, that Rihanna reign. PLus I love diamonds, thanks Sis.

    • FAF November 29, 2012

She not the first to do that, though. . LOL ! Y’all are so delusional !

What’s the big deal ? SLAYARA was the youngest female artist to be #1 for over 6 consecutive weeks !

  21. Mark November 29, 2012

Oh and I don’t feel sorry for Sia, like some said, it would’ve flopped. But she’s getting check everytime you hear this song. Songwriters gets PAID!!!!!! Unless you’re Keri Hilson and burn your bridges.

  22. Well B**** November 29, 2012

Ok hear this now hear Misha b version now tell me if you still think misha b can sing Sia killed it and she sang every note misha cuntface b shouts out every note…

  23. Roman November 29, 2012

This was horrible. I dunno how Sam can call it slayage, when all I heard was screeching. The entire thing was pitchy. Rihanna’s X Factor performance slays this.

  24. Blue November 29, 2012

love sia and all but compare that performance to riri’s x-factor performance and riri wins.

funny how rih does a better sia then sia herself.

  25. BitchICan’tEvenSpellWelfare November 29, 2012

There will be NO shade thrown @ Sia. She WROTE this song & just like Prince, who sings songs he’s written for other artists over the years, she can sing this song whenever, wherever she pleases.

Now, of course, this song would not have been a hit if Sia released it. It wouldn’t have been a hit if ______________ released it. Rihanna made this song HER song & I love her version. She is the top pop artists in the world right now. No one could have been more successful with this song. I also love Sia’s version–it’s just a different interpretation from the brilliant singer & song writer.

  26. Let’s Be Real November 29, 2012

Let’s be real…this song is a hit.the writing and composition are good and I commend Rihanna for emulating Sia thhe best she could.you can tell her goal.was to channel Sia.sia sounded GREAT.but to me this song is just a no brainer.not a wide vocal change, slight chord progression ..best Rihanna ballad since Russian Roulette

    • madear November 29, 2012

good composition? huh?. the cd track just sucks. that “shine bright” hook is a ear cancer. the live rendition is good tho. you only half of it. and she sings that instead of the longer notes.

  29. Auntie_Jackie November 29, 2012

THAT B**** SLAYED. I love her and I was waiting for her to sing it. Ripping this off Youtube now. Rihanna sold it on name, but she copied Sia EXACTLY. That’s not even an interpretation. Please.

  30. Jeff November 29, 2012

This is why Rihanna sounds good on the song, she’s done as she did with Ester Dean and basically followed the demo to tone. As a previous Sia appreciator i could hear her in the song.
I’m slightly annoyed that she’s getting recognised as the only songwriter on this song.

The kid singing is so cute

  31. Hilly November 29, 2012

Her latest release, “Unapologetic,” opens atop the Billboard 200, selling 238,000 copies in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The SRP/Def Jam set is her seventh studio release in a little over seven years and follows six earlier top 10 efforts. Rather infamously, until this week, Rihanna held the distinction of having the most No. 1 songs on the Hot 100 without having claimed a No. 1 album.

It’s not unprecedented for an artist to score six top 10 albums without having had a No. 1. More than 25 acts have lodged six top 10s — without a No. 1. They range from Sting (10 top 10s, zero No. 1s) and Sheryl Crow (eight top 10s) to Brad Paisley (seven top 10s) and Rush (12 top 10s).

Rihanna’s lack of a No. 1 album only seemed to draw more attention, perhaps compared to her consistent performance as a singles artist. Since her arrival in 2005, she has tallied 12 No. 1 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 — tying her for the fourth-most of all time with Madonna and the Supremes. Only the Beatles (with 20), Mariah Carey (18) and Michael Jackson (13) have had more

I totally agree with Sam now that I´ve watched this performance. It´s not just the fact that Rihanna is not a songwriter (Beyonce isn´t either) or the fact that her singing is horrible, it is even worse, she just mimic every little detail on the songs she is given by her label. Sad sad sad

There are women who make things better, simply by showing up. There are women who make things happen. There are women who make their way. There are women who make a difference. And women who make us smile. There are women of wit and wisdom who through strength and courage- make it through. There are women who change the world everyday…

Rihanna is One of those Women!!!!

      FROM A RIHANNA HATER,,,

That Rihanna singles reign just won’t let up!! That rihanna album sales just won’t go up lmao… Wait I’m I the only 1 thinking Def jam buys Rih singles to hit the top spot? Just when Diamonds reached the top it Fell to 7 on itunes same happen to s&m it fell even quicker? Lol.

      @Hater “Dream On Hater”,,,,,

  60. enoughalready November 29, 2012

She slayed because she has real talent, listen to Rihanna and you hear the backtracking and her singing over it, this woman here sings live with real talent. Sad how Rihanna cant perform her stuff natural she has too copy to know how to sing a song. This only shows that Rihanna is nothing.. I dont care how much she sales she still dont have it.

  61. JER November 29, 2012

Grasping at straws. There’s nothing left to say about Rihanna. You are throwing water at a wall anymore b****. Rihanna has her life so b**** go get yours

  62. Teacher November 29, 2012

    Lol…ok

  63. Andy December 29, 2012

Unfortunately, this is exactly what the industry has become. I’m not saying this applies to Rihanna, but most “artists” today would have no careers without autotune and singing other people’s songs.
