The Dream: ‘Beyonce’s ‘4’ Is Rihanna’s ‘Rated R’

Published: Friday 15th Feb 2013 by David

The Dream has compared Beyonce‘s fourth studio album, ‘4′ to Rihanna‘s ‘Talk That Talk‘.

Responsible for crafting jams on both release, the ‘Umbrella’ hit maker has compared the critically acclaimed albums during a conversation he had with the ‘Hollywood Reporter‘, on Bey’s forthcoming fifth studio effort.

His estimation below…

On album #5, the producer shared:

“Her sound is growing with how she’s growing, not because she’s a mother though. She’s just musically growing into a place — it’s the same place we were in with 4.

I think 4 was one of those, what I call, ‘the corner’ albums — same album that Rihanna did when she did Rated R. There are albums that you turn a corner on that aren’t always taken for the glitz and glamour of things, because it’s not as commercial. But they’re corner albums, and they have to be there. She had to turn that corner with 4 in order to get to where we’re trying to go right now.”

A strange comparison? Yes, but it does make sense.

Though critically acclaimed- ‘4‘ like ‘Rated R’  stands as a fan favorite by way of  quality, while struggling to fully capture’s the world’s adoration as well as prior releases did, for a number of reasons.

For ‘4‘, it was no doubt the decision to push ‘Run The World‘ and not the superior ‘End Of Time’ as its first single… and for ‘R’?

Well, despite being Ri’s strongest project to date on a lyrical tip, we’d say it was a little too dark & mature for her audience at the time. This, as Dream so accurately put it, prompted the ‘slayage’ that was her ‘Loud’ era.

Of course, while its US sales fail to wow even today, Rihanna‘s transition from Emo-Pop Princess to Tumblr Land Barbie undoubtedly served as the launching pad for many of the achievements she nabbed over the last year and a half.

So, with the pressure on for Bey to score gargantuan sales her new release, here’s hoping the LP’s first single goes some way to surpass feats scored by Rihanna’s latest releases and her own.

Then again, with the means and talent to ensure she does, we’ll doubt she have any trouble doing so.
