With a career spanning 16 years, it’s safe to say Destiny’s Child has seen their fair share of Pop upstarts come and go all too quickly. However, more so than any of the newbies they’ve watched rise from beneath their shadows comes ‘Pon De Replay‘ belle Rihanna, signed and launched by Beyonce‘s very own husband, Jay Z in 2005.
Indeed, so fast has Rihanna’s ascent to the top been, that it’s hard to believe that she once paid tribute to the multi-platinum trio in her launch year, joining Teairra Mari and Amerie to honor them at the 2005 ‘World Music Awards‘.

A unique way of paying respect to DC while carving out the path for her own legacy, who could have imagined that the 17 year old starlet above would go on to become just as ‘popular’ as those she paid homage to in the years that followed.

She didn’t have the same mainstream appeal and star quality that Rihanna had/has, imo. Had she stayed signed, she would’ve continued to flop, I think.
Commercial success isn’t always about having talent or being the best singer/dancer/entertainer/etc. Sometimes, simply having a charismatic personality and the right packaging and promotion can get you a lot farther than talent alone.

When you are neutral and not overly obsessed with sales (which is majority of people aren’t) they seem just as big as each other for different reasons. But people look at Beyonce with a bit more respect and powerful because shes been around longer, just like people look at Rihanna as more of the it girl of moment because shes at her peak now. Umbrella did not make Rihanna’s career! It was just a big year for her. Music of the Sun had already sold over 2 million WW before Umbrella was released and certified Gold in the US. A Girl Like Me was a platinum album in the US, Canada, and the UK prior to Umbrella. Break it off was a top 10 hit in the United States without a video or major promo. Teirra recorded crappy songs during her stint with Def Jam. Had she fought for smashes like Rihanna did she would be more successful. I highly doubt she would be as big as Rihanna though, as her appeal is more in the Ashanti, Aaliyah, Ciara lane and not Beyonce, Rihanna-ish. Beyonce although is urban she comes off mainstream by looks and demeanor and Rihanna is a special case. She smokes, drinks, curses like a sailor and for some reason she just doesn’t come off as ghetto. I don’t know how she can make her antics appear rebellious and not ghetto.
