Justin Timberlake Exceeding Sales Predictions; Estimates Revised Upwards

Published: Thursday 21st Mar 2013 by Sam

There, quite literally, is no stopping Justin Timberlake.

The superstar’s comeback effort ‘The 20/20 Experience’ is flying off shelves at such speed that yesterday’s first week sales predictions have been revised…upwards.

What is the ‘Suit & Tie’ led set on course to sell now? The answer awaits after the jump…

According to the ever reliable Hits Daily Double, ’20/20′ is now set to open with first week numbers of…

800,000 – 850,000

The figure represents a 50k-100k leap from its initial estimate. Moreover, if achieved, it will see JT score the fifth-biggest debut of this decade with the only releases ahead of him being two Taylor Swift albums (1.2m, 1.05m) and one a piece from Lady GaGa and Lil Wayne (1.1m, 964k).

Say what you will about Justin, he is slaying in a major way. Kudos where they’re due.

His success will certainly make the performance of a host of other releases this year super interesting – especially that of this album’s confirmed sequel. Can he keep up the momentum?

Your thoughts?

    That’s Justin Timberlake for y’all , i bought 2 copies.

  2. W March 21, 2013

He deserves it, that album is incredible.

    • mob March 21, 2013

Did you hear te same CD I did?….incredible or incredulous? 0_o

      • Slaying your fave since 1997 March 22, 2013

B****, you’re just mad because Chris’ last two albums didn’t even get to 900K, and justin will sell the bulk of that in a week.

  3. Lovebird March 21, 2013

    That’s amazing. Good for him.

  4. My Forehead Tho March 21, 2013

Please take discount Gaga out of this. Unlike that b****, he doesn’t have to sell his albums for 99cent to get great first week sales .

    • JOHNVIDAL March 22, 2013

Gaga´s first week sales were amazing anyway. Let´s not act as if the hype the media has created for Justin is not crazy and let´s not act as if Justin Timberlake is the most talented artist around
Good album though and a talented guy, so congrats to him

      • Common Sense March 22, 2013

The exact same thing can be said for Gaga lol. In 2011 the hype the media created for her was staggering. Not to mention Gaga isn’t the most talented artist either. She has some vocal skill but spends her time “ra ra ra-ing,” and she has piano talent but spends her time humping it and jumping on it instead.

  5. DOSSOME March 21, 2013

WOW…These are huge numbers..so congrats Justin

  6. Lovebird March 21, 2013

To be fair, this more amazing than Taylor Swift and Lil Wayne. Taylor is country and Lil Wayne is rap, these are the only 2 genres doing good in the US today so for Justin to score this with a Jazz/Blues album is pretty amazing.

    • Pusha Love Gworl March 21, 2013

weren’t you just hating the other day smh have several seats hun

      • Lovebird March 21, 2013

That’s because the JT fans were coming for Usher. I don’t hate JT, I just don’t like this album. I’ll still congratulate him when he does well.

    • Mother Mariah March 21, 2013

      Jazz/Blues? Uhhhh not. lol…

      • Lovebird March 21, 2013

Well it certainly is not RnB.

      • Mother Mariah March 21, 2013

        It’s R&B with pop undertones….

      • Lovebird March 21, 2013

It’s categorized as RnB but it sounds more like Blues with some Jazz than RnB with Pop undertones.

      • YM March 21, 2013

        Blues?? Lol

    • BitchICan’tEvenSpellWelfare March 22, 2013

The is NOTHING “jazz/blues” about this album. Nothing.

  7. Acem March 21, 2013

In your f****** faces, haters. I was WAITING for this day so I could come back and throw out a “HA!” to everyone who was here talking big s*** about him and his album. Get mad, downplay, make all the excuses and rationalizations you want. Receipts are receipts and nothing any of you s***-talkers can say or do will diminish this numbers-supported bottom line. 20/20 has slayed frontwards, backwards, up the side and down the middle.

  8. Pusha Love Gworl March 21, 2013

lmao gaga had to discount her album to 50 cent to reach them numbers congrats justin baby i bought 3 copies xoxo

  9. Bey Hive March 21, 2013

Ugh i wish King Beyonce would do those numbers 🙁

    • NOSTALGIA1989 March 21, 2013

      It’s possible!!!

      She sold “543,000” with B’Day in it’s first week…

      And “447,000” with I Am, Sasha Fierce…

Album sales all stem from Promotion, Marketing, Advertisement levels and Radio scores. If that’s high – sky is the limit.

      • Valerie March 21, 2013

Beyonce never even reached the 600k range & her album sales decrease with every album…so i doubt she’ll ever sell 800k first week

    • SdotB March 22, 2013

Who cares, it’s just “1st week sales”, Beyoncé always out sells JT with overall sales, domestically and internationally…so regardless of how well it does in its first week, she will do huge numbers at the end of the day!!

My prediction for Beyoncé will be 2-3 Million Domestically, 5-6 Million Worldwide, at least!!

  10. RoyalKev March 21, 2013

Well that’s how you pull in actual sales… you pretend there are huge sales first! Hype = Consumer interest!!! I’m going to call it now, Justin will get a diamond certified album! This album will supposedly do near a million (first week) and end with 20 million ww. Don’t think that this won’t happen! It doesn’t matter what the actual numbers are! Just saying …

I’ll add one last thing, by the end of this era, 20/20’s numbers combined with the 2nd album’s (coming before the close of this year) will have JT at a total 100 Million records (yes, tied with Janet’s underrated sales & surpassing Usher Raymond’s)… This happens in EVERY genre!

    • DOSSOME March 21, 2013

I thought i was the only one who noticed janet’s underrated numbers.it seems as other artistes’ sales go upwards, janet’s own are reviewed downwards…same sources that were quoting her sales at 120 million records back in 2005 are now quoting 100 million records in 2012.SMH…..BUT 20/20 wouldn’t go diamond,4 times platinum max and 7mill ww

      • RoyalKev March 21, 2013

Oh don’t get me started on Janet … Everyone’s sales continue to soar upward, while Janet’s sales consistently goes the opposite direction. It’s not only Janet’s music stats, her net worth has been 150 million for the last 10 years (after hit movies, albums, a book, tours, endorsements, etc).

This happens to a few artists. Whitney dips on and off, Beyonce’s decreases often or stalls for long periods, MJ’s is currently at 400 million (down from a billion, even after all the huge sales after his death).

Britney and Madonna’s stuff moves the fastest (especially Madge)! They don’t even have to be out. Surprisingly, Rihanna’s is updated (for now). Mariah’s seems okay too! Lady Gaga’s Fame increase was literally over night (it shot up to 15, when it was originally 12 million ww).

Still Janet takes the cake. RN & Control is still at 14 million ww (for the last zillion years). Your more likely to win the lottery than see a change in her stats!

      • RoyalKev March 21, 2013

Oh, btw I don’t think JT will actually sell diamond, I’m predicting that it will be certified diamond. These stats are inflated. Real estimates/sales are becoming a thing of the past. Today’s artists need that kind of hype to sell the amounts that they really do end up with. There is no integrity in today’s music!

    • DOSSOME March 21, 2013

In what world has FAME outsold RHYTHM NATION & CONTROL??These are reasons i only focus on US Sales where nielsen soundscan can easily submit receipts…How about madonna selling 200 million albums by 2007 then onto 350 million albums by 2013 whereas Prince is stuck at 80 million since 1990..

      • DOSSOME March 21, 2013

        *Records not albums

      • RoyalKev March 22, 2013

Wow, you notice that too with Madonna! By 2020 she’ll have more sales (inflated) than MJ career sales. That has to the be the goal! She’s the only one that continues to flop and miraculously tact on 100+ million in between eras that wasn’t there before. Mariah can’t keep up with that because her sales are way more honest, if her album under performs it’s certainly won’t help… and btw, this industry is absolutely cruel to Prince! The guys a legend that accomplished way more than he gets credit for.

      • JOHNVIDAL March 22, 2013

I agree the worldwide Madonna sales are the ones that tend to be more inflated lately. like too much. Are we supposed to believe in this era where albums can´t seel very well Madonna is doing a few million copies per year just like that? Without new real hits and just from her catalogue??? Legends keep selling, that´s true, but not as many millions per year

    • RoyalKev March 22, 2013

      ^ Exactly!

  11. Rihanna Navy March 21, 2013

Man wtf he’s already about to outsell unapologetic in just one week not fair 🙁

    • Jayla March 21, 2013

      & “4” lmao

      • Slaying your fave since 1997 March 22, 2013

Girl 4 is platinum, it’ll outsell TTT First, Thanks Lmfao you tried.

  12. Little Monsters March 21, 2013

Only way my fav could reach those numbers first week was to cut the price of the album to a dollar i thought gaga was the biggest pop star? 🙁

    • JOHNVIDAL March 22, 2013

      She´s definitely bigger worldwide

  13. Barbz March 21, 2013

It took Nicki 11 months to sell what Justin did in a f****** week…… that says alot… 🙁

    • truth(icki is a KMART, NO GRAMMY NOD, PFRR FLOP, SQUID EYED b****) March 21, 2013

  14. Nick March 21, 2013

INSANE, can’t hate, BUT come on, ITS Justin Timberlake, N’sync still holds the crown (along with B/street Boys) for biggest openings (if I am correct) & HELLO, we ALL know N’sync was JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE realy, ALTHOUGH JC Chasez is an amazingly way better singer (even JT said that), BUT hey he got it going on, album is good, it has grown on me more-I still think him & USHER together would DOMINATE & tour together, it will be fun, I just love live entertainment…& those guys got it going on 4real!

    • Angela March 21, 2013

If NSYNC was Justin Timberlake, why hasn’t Justin sold the same amount as NSYNC?

      Celebrity – 10+ million
      Justified – 3.5+ million

  15. Mariah4Life March 21, 2013

ROFLMAO! So in just one week Justin has sold more than what it’s taken Nicki 11 months and Rihanna 5 months to do. That’s just ssssaaaaaaddd! Maybe if they’d be willing to take turns giving him nightly blowjobs, he’d let them open for him on his tour.

    • Valerie March 21, 2013

its only been 4 months for riri babe

  17. STONY March 21, 2013

    • Jayla March 21, 2013

      You sound mad 🙁

      • STONY March 21, 2013

not at all simply stating the facts to be honest jt has average music for my taste and it’s a fact but for this album it’s just terrible. but you have hype and intensive promo which makes people belive he delivers a great album .the truth is this album is terrible but as i always say if he found his ships to buy two or three copies of a mediocre album good for him i can only congratulate.the society is so brainwashed all is based on tendencies and buzz no one is questionning himself about his taste now it’s all about buzz and everybody run to buy the cd instead of refusing to fall in the trap of this overexposed mediatisation of things in society so sad but true

  18. Jayla March 21, 2013

Great album deserves great sales! 🙂

  19. Mother Mariah March 21, 2013

Wassup with all of the fake Justin fans? You losers would jump ship if he only sold 200k first week. But congrats to JT. Super cool album. Well deserved.

    • Jayla March 21, 2013

Exactly! I’ve always been a Justin fan but these people are so fake! Great Username btw lol

      • Mother Mariah March 21, 2013

Why thank you honey lol. And, right…chile these things on here stan for sales.

    • truth(icki is a KMART, NO GRAMMY NOD, PFRR FLOP, SQUID EYED b****) March 21, 2013

      I love him

  20. Jayla March 21, 2013

    Beyonce Could NEVER.

  21. Lovebird March 21, 2013

Even the JT fans know this album sold on HYPE ALONE. I bought it and only liked 3 songs, I could even go as far as saying Taylor Swift – Red > 20/20E.

Congrats to him but let’s not make this album to be what it’s not.

    • truth(icki is a KMART, NO GRAMMY NOD, PFRR FLOP, SQUID EYED b****) March 21, 2013

But honey IT SOLD. Ans not bcus of discounts. Just b happy for him.

      • Lovebird March 21, 2013

Who said I’m not happy for him. I am happy for him, I’m amazed that he is doing these numbers for a comeback when his peers have failed to garner such momentum in the new music industry.

I also have to be honest that I do not like the album and there was a lot of hype surrounding Justin’s return or should I say entry into the new music industry.

    • TAYLOR SWIFTS NUMBER 1 FAN!!! March 22, 2013

Yes!! Taylor swift-Red is an amazing album!

    • Common Sense March 22, 2013

What did Taylor Swift’s Red sell on then? It certainly wasn’t talent. The b**** rewrites the exact same song 10 times in every album. It definitely wasn’t her singing ability. The b**** sounds like a strangled horse whenever she tries to sing live.
At least JT has singing ability and can write more than just a breakup song.

  22. MiMi Carey March 21, 2013

it took Rihanna 4 months to sell 800k it Nicki 11months to sell 800k it took Justin Only 1 week to sell 800k…. i kinda feel bad for nicki tho almost a year later & the album still ain’t sold a million rihanna will probably sell a million by the end of april of beginning of May… justin will sell over a million in the 2ndweek kiii AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  23. MiMi Carey March 21, 2013

Beyonce 4 album that was r&b only did 310k first week & Justin r&b album bout to do over 800k lmao & they call her the “KING”

    • Slaying your fave since 1997 March 22, 2013

Yeah after it was leaked, poor promo, and she was pregnant. The biggest promo she got before the album release was the billboard awards, she sold on her name alone. But you shouldn’t be talking about recent sales ‘Mimi Carey

      • Common Sense March 22, 2013

Unlike Beyonce, Mariah’s already a legend and has nothing to prove or sell. Nice try though ;D.

  24. Mariah4Life March 21, 2013

Rihanna should be embarrassed. Seriously. JT has probably already shipped platinum and by his second week his sales will be over a million in the US alone. Can you imagine her being able to pull off such a feat? I can’t either.

    • Mother Monster March 21, 2013

To be honest that goes for all the girls who cant sell over 400 k with an album n take more than 2 months to go platinum.. dont just target one target all that aren’t selling as much as him

  25. mc the place to be! March 21, 2013

I went to target and got the CD I actually like the deluxe cover

  26. Lovebird March 21, 2013

For a comeback album, Justin’s receipts are amazing. Let’s see if Mariah will do the same

    **Looks at Triumphant**

    http:// media . tumblr . com/ tumblr_lrjmfut7VJ1qe8ct5 . gif

    • DOSSOME March 21, 2013

Of course mariah won’t do the same but what i know is her album will be better than 20/20 experience

    • JOHNVIDAL March 22, 2013

Mariah did it when she had to do it, and several times better. I don´t thinl Justin will end selling 6 million in the USA alone while getting 2 numbers ones on Billboard Hot 100 at the same time (one of them the biggest hit of the decade) and a big #2 too (Shake it Off). Just saying
People who try to discredit artists who are bigger than the ones they are defending is just pure comedy 🙂

    • Common Sense March 22, 2013

Again Mariah doesn’t need to comeback; she already did in 2005 and murdered the competition. She is a legend and doesn’t even have to release another single, let alone album, if she doesn’t want to.
Mariah nowadays releases music because she wants to. IF she ever wants to mount a real “comeback” you’ll know when she starts dragging your fave.

  27. Mother Monster March 21, 2013

Good for him to bad he’s not going platinum in a week like born this way did

    • Lovebird March 21, 2013

      • Mother Monster March 21, 2013

Me to girl… i hate waiting i need it in my life now

    • TBT March 21, 2013

If Justin sold his album for a quarter and 3 peanuts like Gaga did, he would have probably moved 3 million his first week. Justin’s 1st week sales are real, unlike that counterfeit Madonna wannabe fraud you worship.

    • Common Sense March 22, 2013

He’d go platinum easily if he sold his album for a dollar like Gaga.

  28. Mother Mariah March 21, 2013

Chill out with the screen names and the shade throwing. Not once did I see anyone on here say that his album would FLOP. Congratulate the man & move the f*** on!

    • Mother Monster March 21, 2013

mind yo own honey & go buy Mariahs flop singles that the world doesn’t care for..

      • truth(icki is a KMART, NO GRAMMY NOD, PFRR FLOP, SQUID EYED b****) March 21, 2013

      • Common Sense March 22, 2013

Maybe if Mariah pandered to every demographic like Gaga did in Born this Gay she’d have another hit single. Thankfully she has some self respect and doesn’t resort to kissing everyone’s ass for a hit.

  29. truth(icki is a KMART, NO GRAMMY NOD, PFRR FLOP, SQUID EYED b****) March 21, 2013

Well done JT. I love u!

  30. Lovebird March 21, 2013

Hopefully this gives RCA some ideas on how to market their other artists (Kelly Clarkson, Usher, Miguel, Brandy, Jacob Latimore..etc.) because RCA’s game has not been on point that the CEO thinks 500,000 is the new Platinum.

  31. ,. March 21, 2013

i still love is song, cry me a river.

  32. DOSSOME March 21, 2013

    Let’s use this analogy
A FILM OF $200 MILLION BUDGET that ENDS UP GROSSING $300 million and another film of $20 million grossing $60 million…which of the two films is more successful??

so imagine one of the films (whichever one) is “20/20 experience” and the other “Unorthodox Jukebox”

  33. Jay Jay March 21, 2013

Honestly with the right consisted promotion, Right team, Radio support any artist can sell this high or 300k plus. Some artists and their team are so lazy, all they do is promote on twitter. Yes social network is huge nowadays but still you still have to properly promote your record beyond social media.

  34. Truth March 21, 2013

Justin Timberlake is only selling so much because he is a white male artist doing urban music. There are so many underrated African-American artists who do not sale. Its purely based on race. White artists who do Black music sell.point black.

    • Common Sense March 22, 2013

      Christina Aguilera disagrees with you.

  35. Lovebird March 21, 2013

To be honest, I don’t think Justin or even Adele are selling like this only because they’re white, but also because they stand out in a saturated environment.

Unlike Rap music where your skills to spit lyrics determines your success (see Lil’ Wayne), RnB is over saturated and has not evolved since the 90s when it was very popular.

Usher, Chris Brown, Ne-Yo, Miguel, Frank Ocean, Trey Songz…etc ALL SOUND THE SAME, ALL LOOK THE SAME and ALL SING ABOUT THE SAME THING.

It’s like walking into a Walmart and trying to pick which bag of rice to buy amongst different brands. Justin is like that stand out Brown rice in an aisle full of White rice.

I’m not saying that the album is good because if we were being honest, it’s not his greatest, it’s just that he stands out in a saturated market.

Black people do support their favorite artists (see rap music), it’s just that with RnB music, you listen to one album by any of those artists, you’ve pretty much heard them all. There isn’t one that stands out enough to get people talking. So what do people do, they pick their favorite songs from any of those artists and make their own killer RnB catalogue album. Simply, Black RnB artists need to step their game up and make something DIFFERENT that STANDS OUT.

    • Common Sense March 22, 2013

LOL calling Lil’ Wayne a good rapper is like calling Rihanna a good vocalist.

  36. Suicide Blonde March 21, 2013

So basically everybody is saying that it’s he’s fault, he should be ashamed of being white cuz if he would have been black he wouldn’t sell that much so all his good sales comes from his skin color, so he should think “I sell because of my skin color, not for my talent”, honestly, i know there’s a lot injustice towards black musicians but that’s not reason of the success of Justin, do you really think that people are thinking of this while promoting him?, there is something about him that people like, stop with this Race card, so do you think i have a better life than yours just because of my skin color, i work my ass off everyday to pay my bills and nobody gives me a penny, some are lucky, some not, that’s it, get over it, if you want to change history then stop acting like a victim and start thinking like White and less like Black….Now say what you want i won’t reply, long day, go home, thatgrapejuice and i find a bunch of people complaining about how bad is being black for a musician, i wish i have the millions in the bank that your underrated black musicians have. B*******.

    • Yasmin March 22, 2013

Denying white privilege further proves that it exists. You’re so delusion that it’s funny.

      • Common Sense March 22, 2013

White privilege? Rihanna and Lil’ Wayne are incredibly successful and they don’t’ have a f****** ounce of talent. It must be that black privilege.

38. Fergie March 21, 2013

This is basic economics. Tell everyone that album is selling and people will buy. Or in other words, this is hype sales as others have said before. Congratulations to him, but seems hardly fair that some artists can’t make those numbers.

  39. DIGGER BEY March 21, 2013

CONGRATS JUSTIN! Those major #s. The boi is Slaying out the gate! I will b getting the album tomorrow and I know I’m gonna luv it! Every album Justin has put out, I enjoy. Especially Future S** Love Sounds! That’s his Confessions! @ Mimi Carey…..Hate on b****. That’s why the 20/20 Experience has outsold already all both of Mimi’s last two flops combined lmao. Keep THE QUEEN name out this post, u messy b****. Cause I will drag Mimi to hell! Got it H**. And for u Rihoeanna stans. Hoeianna albums always take over a year to sell 1 million. TTT took 12 months and lmfao Unaflop probably won’t see a million sold in the US. Her album sales are steadily decreasing. That’s why she’s taking a break cause the w**** knows she’s one step away. From seriously flopping.

  40. The Peach March 22, 2013

Well I Cant Speak For JT Haters & The Outsiders…
But I Bought ‘The 20/20 Experience’ ON THE DAY IT CAME OUT !!!

And I’ve Listened To The Album Twice Today, And EVERY SINGLE SONG IS EXCELLENT TO PERFECTION !!!

Yes The Songs Are Long, But I Couldnt Picture Them Any Other Way. The only song im still not feeling is ‘Blue Ocean Floor’. Other than that, This WHOLE ALBUM is WELL WORTH THE PRAISE & DAMN SURE WORTH THE HYPE.

I Kinda Saw That Revision To Those Album Sales Predictions Coming (Even though i’ve never seen that happen. This is like the first time i’ve EVER seen them do that.)

Kudos To Justin Timberlake !!! Came Back With A BOOM.

I can’t stand suicide blonde. He’s shady, bitchy and very annoying. I can’t stand this b****. Anyways Justin I’m supporting you keep doing your thing. 20/20 I’m going to buy it next week

  42. HTPPX5 March 22, 2013

    The album is ok…F.S.L.S>Justified>20/20.
I don’t Stan for sales or anyone…I do however admire Justin. He is talented at least and doing very well. I don’t think it’s a race thing either. It’s called marketing. Justin hasn’t put out an album in 7 yrs. However he has stayed in the public eye and made sure to be subtle about it. You have to think N’SYNC had a huge following and both of his other albums did about 3-4Million in the US alone. Congratulate people when they are being blessed, don’t hate on them without having any logical reason to. But let’s be real people first week numbers aren’t a true indication on how an album will do over time. I mean gaga cheated to get that 1 Million and the album still only did 2xPlatinum in the us. If you like an artist support them instead of bootlegging their work..any kudos’ Justin and welcome back….

  43. MISHKA March 22, 2013

    Congrats again JT.

But please people, cut the BS about R’n’B singers, okay.

Usher, Neyo, CB, Miguel do not sound the same. The thing is music to Black People is like sprint to Jamaicans: everybody does it and we do it better than anybody else. That’s fact. And maybe that’s the reason we don’t sell or buy as much, because we’re used to see yet another talented guy popping every year.

When it comes to white artists, there’s like one or two really talented artists per genre (except country): Adele, JT, Eminem, Gaga, Katy Perry. That’s it. The targeted fanbases don’t have many artists to spend their money on. So they go in whenever one of them releases a new album.

About the money, do not confuse braggadocio with wealth. Only Jay-z, Diddy, Bey and Mimi are crazy rich. Everbody else swims in the same pool as Bieber, Gaga or Taylor Swift.

  45. POP ROYALTY ( RUDE BOY) March 22, 2013

WOW , HERE , in this post has a CLASSIC case of a JANET stan hating on here ?!!

NOW where is that Brit-bot who gonna SPAM it ? I want this post to be a CLASSIC case.

and i don’t think any educated music consumer will think about someone’s race before buying their album , like how sound it sound ?!!!

BLACK people are always ready with the excuses , your back artists do not innovate , they are stuck on making watered down version of 90’s R&B and it is way over it’s expiration date.

is there anything considering race in the Music industry ? personally , i think YES , but to what extent ?! this is the main question.

JT’s album is quality and you can tell he worked hard in making it , he deserve it , plus his promo campaign was on point , you gonna say it is hyped and s*** , but tell me one album that it didn’t get the “hype” treatment ? even “channel ORANGE” got overhyped before Getting released and Francine is as black as they come , he’s not white and WON a grammy already , so that race card is tired as f*** , your president is BLACK ?!!

    so please _/

    • POP ROYALTY ( RUDE BOY) March 22, 2013

      *stupid it sounds.

    • mary Mary Why You Buggin’ March 22, 2013

That last time that I checked, Timbaland WAS black. So to suggest that “FS/LS” and “20/20” are innovative b/c of Justin is absolutely ridiculous.

Also, WHY exactly do you think “channel Orange” was one of the most critically acclaimed albums of 2012? I’ll tell you–because it was INNOVATIVE. Miguel’s album is absolutely innovative and it, too, received tremendous critical acclaim. YOU obviously need to look outside of the mainstream when you attempt your failed critiques of R & B.

If you know nothing of D’Angelo’s “Voodoo,” Maxwell’s “Embya,” Erykah’s “New Amerykah Part 1: 4th World Order” Bilal’s “Airtights’ Revenge” Dawn’s Richard’s “Goldenheart,” Solange’s “True,” I don’t think you can speak about what is or what is not innovative. Black people aren’t innovative?–please!!!! One of the most asinine things I have ever read. Not to mention, a very tired critique launched at R & B artists.

And just for future reference, please leave President Obama’s name out of discussions about why or why someone is getting album sales. It logically doesn’t make any sense. It’s like suggesting that just b/c we have a bi-racial president that racism in America has disappeared. By using his name in this discussion, you are suggesting that black artists should be selling b/c the president is bi-racial. You see how that doesn’t work?

      • POP ROYALTY ( RUDE BOY) March 22, 2013

        Well …..

Yes , ALL R&B artists are NOT that innovative , like you had to drop some RANDOM names , but what about the others ?!!! WHAT ? the content of the songs is Boring as hell , like when it was the 90’s , you had everyone doing something new and delivering it each on his/her own way IN the same genre, now ?!! everyone sound the same , Miguel sound nothing special , like you won’t go ” that’s miguel” when his song comes to the radio , that because the WHOLE genre doesn’t grow or even crossover , I still sticking to this point.

Now let’s get to timbaland …..

I won’t even bother to tell you that most of timbaland-produced tracks on 20/20 sounded like a revisited versions of “cry me a river” EXCEPT for like 2 songs or something , but the majority had the “nothing new in here” impression from me , like NO innovation at all !!

I don’t say Balck artists can not be innovative at times , like we had “JANET’ back in the day , she was sonic-ally ahead of her pop peers and she was BLACK , every album sounded different and was just great and not only R&B.

Erykah and maxwell are exceptions , they still do that kind of classy old school R&B songs , but as i said , they are exceptional , every R&B record out there sound the same ! and for a POP album , 20/20 is Good , not over-the-top kind of innovative , but def something new compared to what’s on the radio ATM.

and Channel orange is overrated. and i liked “TRUE” !

Also i have the right to use whoever to prove my point , i didn’t say racism disappered , do not interpret my words the way you like if you don’t understand them , i say racism exist , but not to the extent YOU blacks make it out to be , and you always quick to say ” yeah , cuz he’s black/white” but yo NEVER see pass color , you won’t go and say ” maybe the album is good and ppl loved it and went to buy it” , no you will easily pick the ” cuz he’s white”.

you really pick “racism” as the gateway excuse everytime and non-racist ppl get tired of this BS , if it is not broken , DO NOT FIX IT.

Black artists do not sell because there is nothing NEW they deliver in their album , CONTENT-wise , THEMES-wise , LYRICS-wise and all.

ADELE sold a lot of her last album not because she was WHITE , but because she was so different from the others and the most distinctive with her lyrics and all , NOT because she was white , USHER sold millions as well in 2005 because of the same reason , f the album is innovative and different PPL will BUY no matter what , you BLACKS should not let anybody tell you what’s your limit , work hard and get noticed for the right reasons.

    • Mary Mary Why You Buggin’ March 22, 2013

There is nothing “random” about D’Angelo, Maxwell, Frank Ocean, Bilal, Dawn Richard, Solange, and Miguel.

You stated that black artists are not “innovative” and I gave you seven examples of black artists who ARE innovative. And there are a host of others. If you disagree, fine.

If you are suggesting that MAINSTREAM R & B (none of the artists I mentioned are mainstream) isn’t innovative then, yes, I agree with you. It’s not & I don’t listen to it. But to say that black artists aren’t innovative is just flat-out wrong and that is what I am taking issue with.

Adele. I like Adele. I own ’21.’ I like ’21.’ However, that album is FAR from a masterpiece. Tawiah and Szjerdene, just to name two UK examples, are much better writers than her. Amy Winehouse was a much better writer than her. If you want to believe that Adele has sold 22 million copies of ’21’ ONLY because she has “worked hard” and that she is “an innovative writer,” fine.

Again, bringing up President Obama’s name in a discussion on music sales is illogical. His position as president has absolutely NO BEARING on how black artists sale or don’t sale, which is why bringing him up in this type of discussion, logically, makes no sense. There is no connection. If you want to continue to use this analogy, fine, but it’s still a fallacy.

    • Heh March 22, 2013

And what the f*** is so “innovative” about white/dance-pop s***? Most of it sounds like it was hijacked from some gay euro dance club circa 1994.

Sit the f*** down, you phony. You have no idea what you’re talking about.

  46. mary Mary Why You Buggin’ March 22, 2013

Congrats to JT! I’m really enjoying the album. 1-1.5 million WW in the first week then. Impressive.

  47. Loyalty March 22, 2013

  49. Just Sayin March 22, 2013

this album is solid. I do not understand why people are saying negative things about 20/20. It has a nice flow from beginning to end. If it had to have a grade, I say a B+.
Also For the lambs, Have ya’ll seen Mariah lately (fabulous) This may be a good year for music. People are making their way to the spot light. Justin, Mariah, Beyonce, so many artist to look forward to.

  50. Jamie March 22, 2013

Music is an art not a competition. Some of y’all need to grow up. JT will always do big numbers and the reason isn’t that concrete, but the artist comparisons need to cease.smh

  51. Aishaaguilerakeystesfaye March 22, 2013

Congrats, JT, I’m not even gonna hate. Got the album on constant replay.

  52. Common Sense March 22, 2013

Good for JT! Album’s not quite as a good as FS/LS but then again that was pretty much a masterpiece.

  53. DanceFfffreak March 23, 2013
