She’s the Rap icon with a plethora of Hip Hop classics to her name. However, as recent years have exposed to no end, Lil Kim the business woman and Lil Kim the artist struggle to sustain without Diddy’s guiding hand leading the way.
Indeed, as harsh as this might sound, alterations made to her aesthetic and countless lawsuits placed against her has proved that the Rapper isn’t as sharp as she’d like to think she is.
Now, in what marks an unexpected misstep on her journey to the top, the Grammy winning producer has cut ties with the forthcoming album he was said to be executive producing, a matter of weeks after the ‘How Many Licks’ MC made the announcement.
When quizzed on the project, he revealed:
‘Give me anybody I’ll make ’em sound good. The outer surface is real easy but the inner’s hard- it’s hard to get in there. It’s easy to.. ‘let’s-hey let’s do this, yeah that’s great-you’re you- I’m me- that makes sense right?’ But when it comes to the music part, the business part, the details and the business, it’s not that easy- the conversation is different. I don’t really think it’s gonna work out’.
This is wrong on so many levels. The first, as a Hip Hop veteran who enjoyed critical acclaim an entire decade before most of today’s act got their foot in the door, it’s a shame Kim now finds her reputation in the industry burned.
Burned, not by her ill advised feud with Nicki Minaj, but by a general inability to handle her own business once she went the independent route and a false sense of entitlement.
For, while the likes of Missy Elliott have garnered a certain level of respect by moves made after their initial peak, Kim seems more occupied with reminding us that she was once a Rap Royal instead of showing us why she was.
The harsh reality of the situation is that for all her talk of ‘making a mill’ and serving verses for ‘7 million dollars’, the Brooklyn native is an unfortunate example of what happens when an act depends on everything but their own know-how to get ahead…and what happens when that ‘everything’ disappears.
