Fantasia“s showing on American Idol this week saw many catch the Holy Ghost. However, the ever-humble singer was full of praise for one of her own heroes – judge Mariah Carey.
Fresh from rocking the house with “Lose To Win”, the 2004 Idol champ chatted it up backstage about her performance, new album “Side Effects Of You”, and what Mimi means to music.

On a bit of a random note, are we the only ones who think a Fanny/Mimi collaboration would be hot tamale?! Ms. Carey-Cannon has spent of her latter career enlisting with rapper-after-rapper. We”d love to see her do away with the industry”s thirst for “political pairings” and simply serve up fresh fire…something a collabo with Ms. Barrino or any of the other “new breed” of vocalists would be (see: Jennifer Hudson, Beyonce, and the like).

I just love how everyone coming on this show is praising Mariah (I wonder how the other judges feel).
Music is personified as Mariah Carey. Hardly seems fair that Rihanna, the true definition of music gets lumped under a cereal box.
I’m confused…. I don’t understand why all the Lambs are PRAYING that Mariah performs on idol. Personally, I don’t want her to perform on the show because it won’t be a good look for her. Majority of the contestants and people such as Kelly Clarkson and Hollie Cavanagh ( contestant from last year who I really loved, also 3rd runner up) who have returned to the show have been praising her. Even her fellow judges Randy and surprisingly Nicki have been praising her too. Her performance on the show will clearly have HIGH expectations. Keith Urban came and COMPLETELY SLAYED his performance and all. It would just be TERRIBLE AND AWKWARD if she came on the show and lipped or just sounded bad. I love Mimi but she just won’t bring it. I just don’t think she has it in her to deliver those belts and Vision of love/ Vanishing vocal runs that give me everlasting life. And I know some of the lambs might mention Australian show/ Gotham hall performances but to be honest, they were just ok, not all that. But don’t get me wrong because I do understand that she is older now and really didn’t get that much vocal rest in her prime.
IN MY OPINION, she should just do what Britney did on the Xfactor and NOT perform and have a clip from the Music video shown on the show, you know when ‘Scream and Shout’ came out.
I disagree. I LOVE Mariah, but the last thing I want is for her to become complacent. I want her to remind people why she demands so much respect and actually give an amazing performance. If she ends up giving a bad performance, then it will serve as a reminder that she needs to work harder on her vocals.

EXACTLY, I want that from her too but unfortunately, I don’t think she has it in her to do that. Her voice is just not there these days, the only thing i see that can do these days without sounding tired are the high notes and that was definitely shown in her triumphant performance at rockeller centre. It’s not like she can go on the stage and sing a song entirely in the whistle register (maybe she can. I don’t know, that would be amazing though, lol).

I have to agree with Slayriah (can’t believe I just wrote Slayriah) actually…, I personally think Mariah still has IT in spades despite how some haters wanna throw her under the bus. She used to have a ‘Continent’ i.e. this is a vocal metaphor for the slow, now she possesses an ‘Island’ but it’s far from barren and devoid of flora and fauna (sorry, the theme ran away from me lol). She has a lot of textures and tones beyond belts and whistles that make her voice interesting.
Anyway, back to business. I think with the right preparation she can totally ‘own’ each promo moment inc. if necessary a slot of Idol. Lots and I mean LOTS of rehearsal is necessary to make it a success as well as choreography. Let me be clear that I don’t mean steps when I say choreo, I mean a Mariah performance quite often comes across as unprepared or as though she hasn’t tested the variables such as high heel walk-ability etc. IMO Mariah can slay if every detail has been tested. Lastly, she should prepare some good backing tracks for her voice that she can sing to if her voice is not great on the day.., I don’t have a problem with freshly created BT’s, unless it is obvious they have been lifted from the studio version.., I agree that a poor performance on Idol will hurt her standing but I do think if her and her team address a few of these factors then she could easily draw a new audience and totally satisfy her existing audience. EVERYONE IMO is a closet MIMI fan as she has literally been serving good to great music since most of us were little so a resurgence of love for all things MariahCareyTM is only ever a great song/era away.
