If people like Toni Braxton (Rihanna will obviously pass her album sales with this album), Paula Abdul and Kylie Minogue have not sold more albums that Rihanna and can be considered icons, why can’t Rihanna be an icon? Plus most of their albums were released in 1990s or early 2000s when albums used to sell, so did Destiny’s Child . When @JohnVidal said that Beyonce’s album sales are average even in DC, the excuse was that Mariah and other divas released their albums in 1980 and early 1990s when albums were selling like crazy. The same can be said about Rihanna. All DC’s albums and DIL were released before 2005, so it is not a fair comparison.
I admit that Rihanna is an average album seller, nothing wrong about it, but looking at this list, many people slay Beyonce’s album sales and you call her King. Hm, be realistic, if Beyonce is an icon, so is Rihanna. I can tell you that she is the biggest International pop star in my country, many girls copy her stule and music, even tattoos 😀
2.She co-writes her songs and she is executive producer on most of her albums. Plus she plays the drums. She never lied about songwriting credits like Beyonce did, so you shouldn’t talk about it, you will just embarrass yourself. Beyonce co-writes her songs as well, she doesn’t write, sorry 😉 Look at her writing credits and it will be clear to you.
3.Rihanna is bigger name in fashion than Beyonce for sure. I am not talking about endorsements, I am talking about their fashion style. Rihanna’s fashion has simply bigger impact on girls.

Well, in actuality neither Rihanna or Beyoncé are “kings” in any right when it comes to album sales. Neither have sold 100 million albums, which I personally consider the qualifying factor for icon status. But, Island Def Jam lists Rihanna’s album sales at 37 million, she clearly has more #1 songs than Bey, as well as hits overall and digital sales as you mention. I think because the industry has changed so much with social and media impact that Rihanna is at the forefront with this new media age. Also, how do you know exactly how much input she has over her work and the amount she gets for her song sales? Have you seen her contract? I do think Beyoncé writes some of her music, but not all of the songs that she claims
And Pepsi lists Beyonce’s album sales at 100 million albums and MTV have her at 120 million . . But do you see me use those inflated numbers around?

And if #1 singles mean anything, it’s about POPULARITY not success. That’s not my point.
I think some of your comment broke off, but, neither has the best album sales of the industry, but Beyoncé has sold more. But, Rihanna being the top digital selling artist and having 12 #1’s is admirable and reflective of the industry’s changing market.
