I’m happy for Ye and Cole. Yeezus is good album. Although it isn’t his best album lyrically or sonically, it does have some of his best instrumentals, particularly the ones Daft Punk produced for him. He was too aggressive and there was a problem of consistency for me and I could’ve done without I Am a God with all that bloody screaming.
Cole clearly won the battle in my eyes, not only did he deliver with the material and the consistency of the album throughout but he also had great flow and unique storytelling style. I like his OutKast sample he did, that really won me over and there Nas track…..

I’ve been predicting 70k sales for TAGG since April. I’m not surprised. I enjoy the album, but Kelly has been way too inconsistent(as usual) this era. The shocked and snide comments about Kelly’s numbers are unnecessary. She’s never been a strong album seller, so she wasn’t going to explode out the gate this time. Her best hope is to make sure she has a solid management team in place who’ll aggressively bargain and barter on her behalf…and to hope that she has a champion at her record label who believes in her album and is high ranking enough to make sure that it doesn’t get shafted after this lackluster open. Kelly has little to no image, isn’t a brand and is still basically trying to find niche in the industry; she wasn’t going to smash out the gate, no matter what she did. She could have called up Dr. Luke for some corny pandering pop hit to set this album off, and her opening numbers probably would have still been in the same ball park.
Kudos to J. Cole though. I wasn’t expecting that. It seems like the stars are aligning for him this time. His album might wind up doing twice the business of his first. He comes off like a mid 1990s rapper, who isn’t into hipster “swag,” doesn’t pander to pop, has a round-the-way vibe about him that seems in line with Yo! MTV Raps. Hip Hop needs more rappers like him, and less rappers like Drake and Wayne.
As far as Kanye goes, meh. I was expecting him to actually sell more than that, actually.

Black females are turning away from R&B music at an alarming rate (from what I’ve observed). I grew up a tomboy with 2 older brothers, so I love rap…..but the girlie side of me loves some sappy R&B lol. Go to a rap concert, and you will see for yourself. Rap used to be a mostly male fan dominated genre, but that has changed. American whites are also more likely to purchase a rap album opposed to an R&B one. It is what it is.
It’s black, white, and hispanic males mostly. Really the majority of the male population. The reason R&B is suffering is because it’s not the quality that it was when R&B was a household fixture regardless of race or gender. This new R&B crowd is trying to gear to the Hip Hop consumer and is failing miserably.
Kelly, Brandy, Fantasia are bringing the r and b that is quality! Rap is not better quality its just more popular!

R&B artists that sellout to pop are only playing themselves. I have yet to see any former R&B artist that jumped ship to pop and wound up selling a lot of albums as a result. It’s usually the other way around. You alienate your core base, while that illustrious pop base you’re trying so hard to win over don’t care enough to spend more than $1.29 on the generic pop single, while totally ignoring the album it’s from.
It’s really quite simple: R&B artists are hindered promotional-wise, which is why they sell less. They don’t get the stage on AI’s season finale, or top 40 spins – as determined by radio programmers. It’s the CORPORATE decision makers that’s making it harder for R&B acts to prosper moreso than the general public, who by and large aren’t getting exposed to the music because said artists lack proper exposure to make the buying public aware.
All that malarky about R&B fans not supporting the music is bogus. There’s only so much Kelly Rowland fans can do to make her album a hit. They can’t take over the handling of the product, or override the suits who control the industry.
I guess you’re right, at the end, does sells really matter THAT much to the fans? I think R&B should go more inde, cause these mayjor labels aren’t doing anything for them. Could the main issue be that most R&B artist don”t and can’t write their own music, so they have to rely on the labels? Cause Rock doesn’t sell much either, but bands fan base support them on the road.
Kellys album is GREAT , Kanyes- i get to track 5 then go back to track 1 (which might be a good thing), I love JCole to death and Ciaras new tracks are CRAAAAZY! I’m really pleased with the quality this year and cant wait for Mariah!

Why nothing on Mac Miller? He’s a rap artist, this is an urban blog. He’s expected to do around 100k I think. His album is getting positive reviews, too, especially since it’s much better and more intimate than that trash Blue Slide Park. Plus it’s selling more than Kelly.

than 65k more like 79 to 100k. There were only
two songs that I didn’t like on Kelly album
which were Freak and Red wine. The second

• The truth of the matter is that Kelly has a great album that gets lost in the shuffle of all this hip hop thug it out on the charts mess. People like drama, like being told to bow down to someone else and like to justify their violent and irrational behavior. If Kelly was jumping around the stage popping her accoutrements and bleaching her skin, she would sale more albums. We live in a world where all things bad and evil and boastful win! Kelly has an album for adults. People are always predicting something as if that is the final say. The media and music industry have in mind who they want to win and therefore if you have not yet sold yourself and soul to them, then it is fairly unlikely that you will win in this world. Of course Fantasia is doing good in sales, but again that is with the drama of sleeping with a married man, then trying to kill herself…unfortunately that is the truth as much as I love Fantasia and wish her the best and Alicia Keys as well. Kelly is just too nice for this industry. Beyonce really blew up when she married the controversial Jay-Z (or whatever godlike name he has given himself) and became a figure that she thinks is bigger than life. People like being oppressed by their idols…oops, favorite artist. Have you noticed that since real R&B was taken over by this Hip Hop and Pop (the new forms), the crime rate (violent and drug) has increased off the charts. We pump this message to the world and then act so shocked when someone goes in and shoot up a school full of innocent children, kill innocent people for money and drugs, and have a complete disrespect for women (raping them) because they feel entitled and godlike. So if Kelly wants to sell this wonderful album, she needs to be more controversial, produce hardcore dance music with a pop flavor, cuss the world out, and become larger than life by telling people to practice obeisance before her as a goddess, and have a disparaging and offensive attitude!
