Robin Thicke Addresses Justin Timberlake “Beef” On Hot 97

Published: Tuesday 11th Jun 2013 by Sam

Robin Thicke is currently riding the wave of success with his biggest hit yet, ‘Blurred Lines’. Yet, despite this, one nagging soundbite remains a constant — Justin Timberlake and his supposed “swagger-jack” of Thicke’s sound.

Notoriously cool, calm, and collected, the Soulful crooner has remained relatively mum on the topic. However, during a promotional stop at Hot 97 this week, the singer offered his sincere take on the “situation”.

Find out what he had to say after the jump…

From the 4.00 mark onwards…

Kudos to Robin for keeping it real, yet classy. It takes a special kind of artist – one truly confident in their own craft – to be able to not just  unfazed by the “inspired”, but to also embrace and appreciate what the success acts such as JT means for their own music. More power to Mr Thicke.

‘Blurred Lines’ the album hits stores on July 9th. Click here to read our EXCLUSIVE preview.

  2. Lovebird June 11, 2013

Oh look, white boys fighting. I mean WTF are they going to do, b**** about who has the better hair, throw chapstick at each other or compare who’s trust fund is bigger.

I’m going to need these two to STFU and continue making good music. Well Robin is making good music, Justin that album is not it.

    • TruthSpeaker June 11, 2013

creating beef out of nothing. you stfu seedy queen- both make good music but only 1 has the mega fan base. Robin isn’t EVERYTHING- he’s mediocre, nothing special, not “Pop” material. thats why his sound hasn’t evolved past his attempt at R&B and thats why his music isn’t the best of R&B. everyone can keep saying that justin stole his sound- but those of you who do are just bitter that someone did it better than robin….. ::puts mic down::

    • ADC143 June 11, 2013

Does anyone else suspect that this Lovebird troll probably looks like Splinter from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? What a loser.

  3. meena June 11, 2013

I like the way he answered it. I’m so excited about this album. He looked so good in blurred lines.

  4. AmbeRussell June 11, 2013

people WANT to make a beef between robin and justin and get robin, im guessing, jelious or throw salt and be bitter of justin’s success with suit and tie. only problem is is the fact that, though robin has put more out there, they both were blue eyed soul singers at similar times. robin came out a lil after justin’s solo career, they both had a popish rnb sound (justin obviously more bubble gum when he 1st went solo than robin). and future s**/love sound was very much similar in music sound as 20/20 so it isnt like justin did rnb out of no where. but bc robin is the 1st person we think of as white guy doing rnb, when justin does it (who always did it) ppl waanna cry copycat

  5. Savannah June 11, 2013

Robin Thicke did not fire any shots at Justin. 🙄 All he said was Justin’s sound opened the door for BL to smash like its currently doing. I swear us blacks love to put people against each other.

  6. Lupita June 11, 2013

They need to get together and make the finest ballad ever!!

  7. Hive June 11, 2013

I love how these whites are selling r&b while fine China n how many drinks is flopping and struggling to reach top 20

    • Savannah June 11, 2013

Fine China sucks, and Miguel is still promoting/performing “Adorn” while ignoring his other two singles. “Do You” is a f****** classic…..shame how he just released the video and did nothing with the single.

    • rihanna is getting bigger and beyonce is decreasing. June 11, 2013

I wrote a theory of white teh white boys are slaying.

    • XXX June 11, 2013

cause fine china is s*** and chris can’t sing

and mainly, cause blurred lines is the best song out of these

      • RiRi Bad June 11, 2013

Blurred lies really isnt all that plus fine china is a nice little song

      • RiRi Bad June 11, 2013

        Lines*

      • XXX June 11, 2013

yeah it’s a nice little song…maybe, but it’s not a hit. and chris destroyed his career long ago – and not only by hitting rihanna – more because of his character. And after all these years I still don’t know what his voice sounds like. All I have in mind while thinking bout Chris is this autotuned mess he calls his voice combined with some old ass Michael Jackson moves…

blurred lines is a perfect summer song, has a nice vid and the right timing now that edm is slowly but surely dying.

as i heard it, I knew it would become a hit – not as big as it is, to be honest.

robin deserves it – that’s all I gotta say. I dig him since “when I get you alone”

    • xedos June 11, 2013

Fine China stuck because he and rihanna broke up . Rihanna and the navy was the one bringing him back to mainstream.

    • LV girl June 11, 2013

Didn’t RCA throw every available dollar at “relaunching” JT though? I mean his promo was insanely aggressive,, in TV and Radio. He has a much greater chance at success with all that money behind him because Suit and Tie is not a great song, Blurred lines is much better and Fine China is also good (regardless of how it was performed live…*shudder)

Miguel, Chris and JT (Usher too) are all on the same label and its clear to see who got the marketing dollars. It’s not hard to see why JT would succeed over the other two of just this one reason. There are other reasons but this one is a huge reason.

  8. JARED (WHITE DUDE) June 11, 2013

The insipid comparisons will continue to happen.

I like them both [albeit Robin much more] but there’s no comparison because they’re completely different.

Thicke is a crooner, whereas JT is an entertainer. Thicke has a stronger, more soulful, voice but Timberlake, because of his musical past, has more appeal.

Then again, when has there ever been a time in mainstream music, when two artists, male and/or female, could coincide without being ‘compared?

The ‘Huffington Post’ recently did an article on ‘Whitney [v.s] Mariah. I mean, seriously? Two decades later and these Legends are still being put against one and other?

    >>>

    • Savannah June 11, 2013

I love your comments lol. I agree w/ everything you said. Justin is prone to be more mainstream. Mickey Mouse Club, N’Sync, Britney…. Whereas Robin is married to a black woman and has been a pretty consistent R&B/soul artist. I’m glad hes finally getting some mainstream shine. He deserves it. 🙂

    • TRUTH TEA… WOULD YOU LIKE A SIP? June 11, 2013

      AGREED.

  9. rihanna is getting bigger and beyonce is decreasing. June 11, 2013

Austine Malone, JB, JT, R thick…….these white boys doing RNB are really slaying black shitt n*****. Why is that? There is music is not that great. How comes Robin has global number 1 over miguel? I will tell you why: This new generation of black men are very disrespectful of black women. They devalue all the time.

From the comments on twitter, instagram, facebook and youtube, blogs etc. Black men are dumb: they know nothing about marketing , business or consumer power. White men are smart, they under their consumers. Hvae u ever seen any white boy of any genre – even movies stars, dissing white women or excluding them as love leads? If One direction only had black women in their videos and dated / bragged about chocolate women and dissed white women as being ugly, if they way chris brown does black girls, do u think One D would have careers?

One direction, the wanted, etc all the white boys are doing well and sell. Even black girls lke nicki, alicia, bey and rih sell. Black men are failing: Chris, miguel, frank , mindless behave etc. I do not t any black male singer will ever sell big again. This has happened with black actors like taye diggs, wesley snipes and Mike ealy who have had their careers hut down by black women, who are tired of spending money on men who think they are ugly.

Before u say, ” but they can date who they want ” Not in showbiz, when u are trying to get a specific market to buy your music. WHy do u think many men cannot be gay and leading man. Lance bass had to hide he was gay when he was nysyn, why? Cos they were selling to t*** white girls.

When will black men learn to play the f****** game? NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!! Hence why they stay loosing forever. Black men in 90’s u sell so well: Jagged edge, dru hill, r kelly jodeci, keith sweat etc cos they were repping black women.

I wrote this cos I have seen the tweets where Chris brown makes fun of dark skin people and pushed the dark skin fan away, but hugged up the white teens who do not buy his s*** or go to his tours.

    OOOPS

    • rihanna is getting bigger and beyonce is decreasing. June 11, 2013

If black men want to degrade and devalue black women, that is cool…..but they should never dare EXPECT black women and girls to spend a penny on their music or tours. Let them rely on white fans – if they can.

    • Savannah June 11, 2013

You DO have a point. But then again, a lot of these black R&B males being NOTHING new to the table. Most of them look the same, sing about the same subject matter, sound the same and too many are trying to be gangsters. Frank Ocean doesn’t wanna be known as an R&B artist, but I respect him because he brought something new to the genre. (I was a fan before he came out of the closet). His music is thought provoking. He’s a story teller. That’s what R&B is missing….passion & storytelling. And when I say passion, I don’t specifically mean ooooohhhh baby lets make love, I mean RAW EMOTION. I like Miguel because he experiments with his sounds. He sings about typical stuff sometimes, but his approach is different.

Trey, Chris, Luke James, B. Smith and sadly…Usher just aren’t cutting it. Most of them can sing, but their music is just tired and been there done that.

      • rihanna is getting bigger and beyonce is decreasing. June 11, 2013

But the white boys are s*** too. But they know who their fanbase is and they have gained fans form young black girls who feel unwanted and ugly by black male culture. With Frank ocean, i feel the gay thing kiled his chance of being a black male hearthrob like D angelo.

      • Savannah June 11, 2013

LOL! Even if frank were straight, he wouldn’t be a heartthrob like D’Angelo. He has no s** appeal, and that’s fine.

  10. RiRi Bad June 11, 2013

Robin is so cute but of course it would seem like they beef because there so similar

  11. Likica June 11, 2013

Both are cute and successful guys, no need to fight. But I admit that I prefer Justin, he brought #SEXYBACK and ain’t another woman that can take his spot but me 😀

  12. rihanna is getting bigger and beyonce is decreasing. June 11, 2013

Black men are gonna get kicked out of RNB. It will happen a lot sooner than later. Black women are more educated and higher earners than black men on the whole, plus there are more black women in the USA, than black men.

Black women have huge buying power and black men are to color struck to noticed. All this bragging about redbone, yellow bone, blasian, exxotical, foreign women who speak no english, kim k lookalike, white girl, latina mami, dark b*** etc. This is the final straw for black men. How u gonna make music for black women, but not have them in your video or even date them? IE: Miguel – he should me a mexican singer.

Black women are supporting the white boys, look how big they made scandal. Plus, they like JT, JT , the wanted and One D. I am laughing at black men now.

    • Savannah June 11, 2013

I don’t know ANY black chicks who wanted f****** one direction lmao. Miss me with that. Black women are usually attractive to smooth/masculine/scruffy white men. Y’all can keep the Justin Biebers and One Directions. No thanks!

      • Savannah June 11, 2013

        Attracted to*

      • rihanna is getting bigger and beyonce is decreasing. June 11, 2013

A lof of black girls in THE UK / EUROPE love one D and the wanted. You will be shocked. And if black women like scruffy white men, how comes every black women adores paul walker and Cris Ronaldo – the soccer play?

David beckham too. JB, Did u see his movie, a lot of black girls in Canada were waiting for him and when he was in sweden ( I am half swede ) all black / mixed girls love JB over chris brown. That is why black men fail in europe: they fail to get white AND BLACK EUROPEAN GIRLS BUYING THEIR S***.

BLACK women do better in Europe cos black girls see themselves in black singers.

      • Savannah June 11, 2013

David Beckham is hot because he has an aura of masculinity. He’s also scruffy…and so is Adam Levine. I don’t know who the others are, but then again I am neither European or Canadian…..

  13. xedos June 11, 2013

Robin don’t get the media hype like Justine because he’s not married to a white woman. had married to white woman he would be just as big as justine

    • rihanna is getting bigger and beyonce is decreasing. June 11, 2013

YUP! And now that he has white girls in his new video – he has a WW hit. But, you cannot blame the white media for that. If only black men would hype up their own women.

  14. xedos June 11, 2013

Bruno Mars is a better singer, songwriter and musician than Justine, but he will never be big as Justine. the media wont allow it because he’s not white.

    • rihanna is getting bigger and beyonce is decreasing. June 11, 2013

Bruno mars do doing better, globally than any black man.

    • Savannah June 11, 2013

His singles have outsold Suit & Tie and Mirrors though….

    • CaliforniaLove June 11, 2013

Yea well quit yur crying if he was better then he’d be bigger! all these f****** lame ass excuses, just admit yur own biasness, don’t matter what ethnicity you are white or black or brown you sound like a bitter ass bias person.

  15. mc the place to be! June 11, 2013

white men are just a-okay they like black women but they really love black women with natural hair they like the part us we sometimes try to hide because of what black men really want us to be like mixed women/redbone/brazilian etc

  16. xedos June 11, 2013

White people love rnb,but only when its done by whites. its the 50’s all over again. back then white love rock and roll but only embrace it when Elvis came along. they try to kill it when little Richard and chuck berry started rock and roll

  17. Bow Down June 11, 2013

Both blurred lines, mirrors, & suit n tie are basic but yet they reach top 10 cause a white man is singing it meanwhile my n**** my Miguel has some great records out & they’re not doing as good How many drinks & Adorn deserve to reach top 10… & Fine China is a great rnb record aswell but its flopping

    • Savannah June 11, 2013

Adorn did very well. It’s his biggest hit ever. He’s still performing it while neglecting “Do You” and “How Many Drinks”. Do You is such an amazing song, musically 🙁

      • Bow Down June 11, 2013

Never heard Do You .. but Miguels biggest hit is beautiful feat Mariah adorn peaked at 19 it did do good but coulda done better the song is AMAZING babe

  18. xedos June 11, 2013

You cannot be rnb and project a thug image. that’s one of the problem with RNB. it either you’re and rnb artist keep it classy or a hip hop artist and act like a thug
RNB was always had a classy and s*** image. now you have RNB artist look like they just came from the Penn

  19. xedos June 11, 2013

At the Grammy’s miguel got 2 minutes and he was nominated.Justine got 10 minutes did 2 songs and he did not have a nomination or had an album out. why? he’s white. if it was the other way around it would never happen.

    • mc the place to be! June 11, 2013

but miguel is kind of a new artist im sure they would’ve done the same for beyonce and being that justin was out of the game for 7 years i really understand he’s talented he deserves his success

  20. Bow Down June 11, 2013

I can’t with people discrediting fine china just cause he had a bad live performance of the song doesn’t make the song horrible its a great R&B record better than suit n tie fursure

    • Caliban June 11, 2013

Nobody cares about Chris Brown anymore. He’s annoying and played out. Combine that with how “Fine China” is just OK and you have a recipe for stale cookies that can’t be sold. All Chris is is a troubled ex-t*** star who shouldn’t have lasted past 2008. Once upon a time he was cute as that perky, energetic and seemingly wholesome “Apollo Kids”-esque t*** star, who sang about being 16, but that ship has long sailed. The world doesn’t need a f***** in the head 20 something Chris Brown who thinks he’s a studio gangster.

  21. Cassie Lover June 11, 2013

  22. POP ROYALTY (Bohemian Grove) June 11, 2013

is it only me or i didn’t hear any “beef” ?

Robin is smart and was super cool in this interview despite those messy S*** starters/hosts with their constant attempts to make him lose it , White MALE Artists are usually smart and don’t get into beefs, they have a good control of what they say.

I enjoy Both JT’s and RT’s Music , both are different kinds of artists.

    • JARED (WHITE DUDE) June 11, 2013

Exactly and there was no “beef”.

Although, I must say, I appreciate Robin more however.

He just appears to be more ‘natural & effortless’ with his ‘cool’.

Either way, I’m still awaiting the next ‘Male Pop Superstar’ ala- Michael Jacksom.

      I’m disappointed. 🙁

      • POP ROYALTY (Bohemian Grove) June 11, 2013

there is no Next or another MJ , you take artists for who they “REALLY” Are.

MJ has enough imitators already tho 😉 , i enjoy both men’s music, Justin is funny too btw.

Yea man there wasn’t any beef, people trying to get you to check out their s***. So most of the comments are totally unrelated. A bunch of crybaby remarks about why isn’t someone of color most popular! When they can’t even see that Bruno Mars is on top! and last I checked he would be a person of color. And for female Rihanna is on top so what’s with all the crying. Just because it’s not your favorite suck it up! Maybe you might not consider Bruno R&B okay maybe not down the middle, but brother’s got soul! Just get in the game and do something about it! Stop talking.

  25. Queen Brit Brit June 11, 2013

Justin and Robin o different styles. JT is entertaining: he can dance and his songs are more pop. Robin is more of a singer. He’s not known for his choreography or elaborate stage setups.

  26. Mark111 June 11, 2013

People who brings race into music makes me sick. So when Hip Hop and R&B singers cross over, it’s fine, but when a White person (very few btw) makes it in R&B and Hip Hop, it’s stealing and this and that. When R&B singers (Usher, Beyonce) stop trying to sound pop and goes back to R&B, then they would sell albums with ease, but they HAVE to take a chance and bring something new and not work with the same writers and producers every time. Hell, why are they trying to sound Pop when their highest selling album were R&B albums? That’s why R&B isn’t selling, it’s all the same. How many Dream/ Mike Will Made It songs we heard in the past year? Last year it was Rico Love, before that it was Lil Jon and Neyo. They all work with the same. Look at the days in the 90’s you had Brandy, Aaliyah, Monica, MC, Whitney, MJB, Toni and others, all female R&B singer, but sounded NOTHING alike, cause they had different writers and producers.

  27. titshaker69 June 11, 2013

    He’s so damn s***…

  28. CzarM June 11, 2013

Seriously, did the writer need to use the word “beef?” Leave it to TGJ to create a sensational and exaggerated headline/article for the sake of views and comments. RT earned cool points for his answer. Not only did he not take the bait, but seemed generally cordial in his overview of JT…and also smart enough to acknowledge that JT’s return *really* helped the landscape of R&B music to have more of a commercial presence that would allow an artist like him to benefit.

That being said, the biggest thing those two have in common is that they’re white. The music they do — “Suit & Tie” included — is only fleetingly similar, if at all. They don’t have a reason to have a “beef,” because they both have a by and large mutually exclusive fan base and neither one steps on the others toes.

Cut that instigation b******* out, you dim shallow idiots. These are grown men in their 30s. Not insecure, airheaded, ego-trippin 20-something “pop girls” who’re threatened by the talent of others (**coughing** Rihanna) and whose record labels meanwhile accept songs for them their competitions record label rejected.

    BULLHORN TO JON B.:
Come out of seclusion, your time might be now too.

  29. Navy Nick June 11, 2013

yeah R&B is trying t sneak on back up & I LOVE IT! ROBIN IS AMAZING & handled this sooo well! LOVE THIS GUY!

  30. S****** Blonde June 11, 2013

I love both but let’s be honest, JT is more succesful beacuse he has more swagger, he has flow, he’s more confident and comfortable in his own skin and knows how exploit his sensuality, RT is very reserved and won’t do the things JT do just to has success, he is more into his music while JT is more about expand his horizons with his career, he went from Pop to R&B, to being a singer/dancer to an actor and the public eye is more interested in his private life, RT is a man with a beautiful family since the beginning of his career + JT is a little b****, RT is so down to earth and humble.
A collab. would be out this world, PLEASE!.

    • EnRanc June 11, 2013

Your comments are never needed and as usual you’ve add nothing to the conversation. Seriously, just shut up.

  31. Avi June 11, 2013

How the f*** is Justin “swagger jacking” Robin? S&T and 20/20 sound like classic JT music that he’s done throughout his entire solo career. Nothing he’s done of late has been contrary to his usual sound or anything he’s done before. That’s like Madonna recording a song similar to “Express Yourself” and some 1990s born idiots accusing her of copying Gaga’s “Born This Way”. Get f****** real you ignorant, drama thirsty queens and stop trying to create beef where there is none. If Justin and Robin ever met, they’d probably be friends.

Congrats to Robin for winning, he’s always been underrated…but in the meantime Justin is going to continue to win and will probably have the best selling album(s) of 2013. Your hate has become his luck.

  32. Absolved June 11, 2013

What a pointless article. Robin only vaguely spoke on JT for about 60 seconds out of that 20 minute interview and what he did say was humbled and cool. How Sam managed to twist something so miniscule into some grandiose, but futile, write up about about a non-existent “beef” just exasperates me. And as usual his dimwitted readers took the bait. In the meantime, TGJ couldn’t be bothered to actually report on any real news about Robin’s music that was spoken of in the interview. Instead just catering to the lowest mentality to get hits. Sounds like Rihanna. Sort of makes me question why Sam is so against her, when he acts just like her.

How are we even talking about one stealing “swagger” from one another when they both stole from and are reaping unnecessary benefits from attempting to do Urban Music. They aren’t better vocalists than the who’s who of R&B but they get to top the charts of the genre and ruin it for everyone else since they aren’t even doing bonafide efforts at the genre. Stick to Pop.
