Katy Perry Secures Clear Channel Deal For ‘Roar’

Competition.

While performers may deny it fervently, they well and truly are in direct competition with each other.

An obvious sentiment? Perhaps.

However, with many of today’s acts sharing one other’s ‘casual audience’, it’s oft in the interest of these acts to create the illusion of mutual support at face value, while their teams forge plans to see their act outperform the other on the back end.

A little dramatic on our end? Well, tell that to Katy Perry– the Pop Princess whose inked an exciting new deal with Clear Channel to ensure her new single ‘Roar’ dominates US radio!

With the threat of Lady GaGa’s ‘Applause’ all too potent, Perry has inked a deal with Clear Channel- forging an arrangement whose terms will come into fruition today!

To be specific, 12pm today will see Clear spin ‘Roar’ every hour on the hour on all participating radio stations that the mass media companies own.

How many they own?

850.

Giving US consumers no choice but to consume the uplifting release, this deal will see the number soar on the Billboard Hot 100 this week thanks to its initial airplay surge.

However, in what will guarantee an impressive ascent on the tally, its digital download sales will only be taken into account next week- on course to snatch the top spot from Robin Thicke‘s smash hit single ‘Blurred Lines’.

Needless to say, Camp Perry are leaving nothing to chance this time around, realising that while GaGa will fare far better than she will on the ‘200’, Katy always shone brightest in the Hot 100- hence the moves they’ve put in place to ensure she wins there.

When Mariah did this with Beautful, TGJ accused her of “buying” a hit. It’s ok for Katy to do this though?

  5. JJFan1814 August 12, 2013

Cool. I purchased the song. Unfortunate given the Brave comparisons, but you can’t deny that the song isn’t made for radio. It’s great and catchy. Nothing groundbreaking or fresh, but it’s not a typical ‘dance’ track. I’m eager to hear the 2nd single and see how this era spans out.

  6. Mark111 August 12, 2013

Smart business, bad artistry. Your music should be dope enough to get spins off it self and the fans. But this the nes business, make deal that buys your album, spin your songs and pay for your videos.

    • FAF August 12, 2013

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I didn’t know adele did this too *side eyes her as well*

      #HONESTY

  7. Slayty Perry (ROAR) August 12, 2013

TGJ you guys are late. This deal happened the day Roar leaked and had been playing on iheartradio stations every hour. Plus she’s one of the headlining acts at thus year’s iHeartRadio festival. The slayage has began. Roar is #1 on iTunes too. With streaming and digital sales Roar will make a decent debut despite Billboard only counting half of its weekly tally due to being released in the middle of the week.

  8. Cici Slaaaays August 12, 2013

^ 4’s lead single chart performance says otherwise

      • . : : h 2 o : : . August 12, 2013

^ But her tour numbers don’t.

      • stella August 12, 2013

Run The World is almost Platinum in the USA while Body part has yet to crack Gold. RTW USA sales >> Body Part and I’m Out combined sales worldwide.

      • FAF August 12, 2013

^Body party charted higher than RTW though and RTW been out close to 3 yrs 😆 Lets compare body party in 3 yrs then get @ me 😉 DEAD @ u comparing slow songs to fast songs that was performed everywhere from Oprah finale to Billboard where she was presented with an award. Nice try, ugly 😆

      • . : : h 2 o : : . August 12, 2013

        Wait for what lol?

RTWG sold 2 million worldwide, “Bathroom Party” is about to drop off the Top 100 in the states without earning a f****** 1X d*** cheese certification.

  10. Ciara is everything August 12, 2013

The song is beyond basic and silly can’t believe its doing so good the majority has bad taste in music tbh…. Taylor Swift makes better music than Katy Fugly Perry.

    • Slayty Perry (ROAR) August 12, 2013

A C-error fan should know all about basic.

      • FAF August 12, 2013

it’s pissing me off that gaga is rush releasing APPLAUSE just to dethrone roar. but in the long run ROAR will win. No one is here for gaga except her fans and the snippet wasnt that hot and radio will fade the son away just like JUDAS.

    • TWERK 4 MILEY August 12, 2013

No she not weres the proof.

    • LTM August 12, 2013

She is thirsty for the attention. I’m over it tbh

  12. LTM August 12, 2013

A very smart deal. Adele Justin Timberlake and Mariah Carey did this with their lead singles and it worked. I’m sure getting her to perform at this years iHeartRadio festival was part of the deal too. Katy and her team may be the smartest in music. I doubt even with the heavy airplay and digital sales Roar will debut at #1. Billboard will only count three days of digital sales and four of streaming and airplay.

  13. TWERK 4 MILEY August 12, 2013

The song is cute but not my cup of tea… I only listen to Urban now.

  14. cake like lady gaga August 12, 2013

Beyoncé and Dead People Sell Magazines, Nicki Minaj Does Not
    BY CHARLOTTE COWLES
    TWEET

WWD has released this year’s magazine newsstand numbers so far, which means it’s time to pit each celebrity’s selling power against the others! Sure, magazines’ newsstand sales matter much less than ad dollars and many other metrics, but isn’t it interesting to see hard data proving that people want to read about Miley Cyrus more than Taylor Swift? Here’s a roundup of publications’ most and least popular issues, and the cover girls who sold them (or didn’t).

Beyoncé (of course) killed it on Vogue’s March cover, which even outsold the magazine’s exclusive interview with Michelle Obama in April. (The numbers: 355,397 to 293,798.) Rooney Mara’s February issue didn’t fare so well, though, possibly because she looked so forlorn.

Audrey Hepburn covered Vanity Fair’s best-selling May issue, while Taylor Swift covered their lowest seller in April. (The numbers: 308,000 to 211,000.) Remember how people did’t buy magazines with Taylor Swift on them in 2012? They still don’t. Meanwhile, this proves that dead people can sell magazines — which explains what Diana is doing on this month’s cover, again.

Lauren Hutton is Town & Country’s best seller, because she is hands-down fabulous and cuts her own hair. You can expect some dead cover girls in this magazine’s future as well, according to editor-in-chief Jay Fielden, who tells WWD, “We love dead people … What genre of books is most popular? Biographies. And those are often about dead people.” (To which we say: Therein lies the difference between books and magazines. But anyway!)

Cosmopolitan’s two top sellers: Miley Cyrus and Kim Kardashian. Worst seller: Rachel Bilson.

Olivia Wilde was Marie Claire’s best seller; Heidi Klum was their worst.

Nicki Minaj’s covers for Elle and T*** Vogue performed badly for both publications. Perhaps it’s because Elle made her look sort of grungy, which is … yikes.

Drew Barrymore was a win for Harper’s Bazaar in March, while Jennifer Lopez tanked in February.

And surprise, Kate Hudson can still sell! She’s behind Glamour’s best-selling April cover (323,810). Also, Anne Hathaway, who made for the second-most popular issue (January, 306,428). Sadly — and a bit surprisingly — Dakota Fanning’s March cover was a bomb.

    • POP ROYALTY (F*** Yeah Rihanna) August 12, 2013

People won’t waste a damn 0.99$ on this b**** while being featured in every Song out there, why they will waste money on buying a magazine having her ?

Her Career is dead , her latest effort is a Standard Flop on arrival.

      Good for HoneyB tho. 😉

      • RICHIE_RICH August 12, 2013

lol I don’t really keep up with Nicki, I think she will be find. She should take it easy on the featured and focus more on herself.

  16. cake like lady gaga August 12, 2013

But why is she buying airtime though? Surely if the song is great, it will be on heavy rotation on every radio station, without her buying airtime?

This is cheating!! Next she is gonna buy the #1 spot on BB 100

    • lana the legend August 12, 2013

  19. cake like lady gaga August 12, 2013

These artists coming up with more and more creative ways to get that #1 on BB 100/200…

    THE STRUGGLE!!!!!!!!!

We need to go back to basics. Do away with downloads and iTunes, people must buy the physical copy… Do away with streaming, people must listen to the radio, and artists mustnt be allowed to buy airtime!!!!!!

    • POP ROYALTY (F*** Yeah Rihanna) August 12, 2013

Radio is Biased though, look at the post we are in.

I say Stream the Album” wherever you like”, if you like it, support the artist and buy it in the form you like, usually I buy 2 versions, Digital one for Iphone/iPod and such and then the physical copy to blast in the car or anything else.

      Make use of everything.

      • RICHIE_RICH August 12, 2013

Yep I buy physical copies, I’m old school with it.

      • POP ROYALTY (F*** Yeah Rihanna) August 12, 2013

Gaga’s 99 cent deal and video release on the iTunes release to capitalize on the new streaming rule though. Artist have found ways to top the charts since they began. Nothing new

  21. Monstarebel August 12, 2013

I like the song im glad she chose something safe & radio friendly as the first single its a great choice can’t wait until the video is released! Im so glad Katys back tbh!

  22. Mya August 12, 2013

If this was Beyonce or Rihanna certain people would be dragging.

    • RICHIE_RICH August 12, 2013

yep, I hate to say this but it’s true. Katy and Gaga = white and Beyonce and Rihanna = Black ….You get it sad but so true.

  23. channel_ROMAN August 12, 2013

Artist are desperate now a days. These streams just place these artist high on charts while still not selling anything. Ciara made it to top 25 on BB but Body Party has yet to go gold. What’s the point of these new rules?

    • FAF August 12, 2013

body party is r&b and its sold about 350k it will be gold by next months end it was never released to pop radio, just urban & slayed with thousands of impressions there alone 😀

      • lana the legend August 12, 2013

Faf stfu stop with the f****** excuses theres no reason body party shouldn’t not be gold by now the song has been out 5 + months performed on multiple talk shows and even reached top 20

    • Slayty Perry (ROAR) August 12, 2013

Lol as if Roar isn’t selling though.

  24. lana the legend August 12, 2013

Wait gaga so desperate she releasing applause smh.. let katy get her shine s***

    • cake like lady gaga August 12, 2013

Sis you are TRYING the most though, chill down

  25. FAF August 12, 2013

This is why I say itunes counts wayyyyyyyyyyy too much remember when artists had successful albums? Now the single precedes the album and even MONSTER smashes like “blurred lines” only lead to 170k in sales first week. Albums don’t linger like they used to Mya released “Fear of Flying” and flopped at first until “Free” was released & it grew to be a massive hit.

    RIP the industry

    • Slayty Perry (ROAR) August 12, 2013

You’re acting like mega smash hits leading to flop followup singles and poor album sales is something new. See James Blunt after Beautiful or the guy who sang Bad Day.

  26. JJFan1814 August 12, 2013

GAGA IS RELEASING APPLAUSE TODAY TO RADIOS.

    LOL.

SHE IS BEING TOO SHADY. SERIOUSLY.

    *Pulls out popcorn*

    RIHANNA WHERE U AT

    • cake like lady gaga August 12, 2013

You wack h*** leaked it, so she released it early. Where is the shade in that?

    • stella August 12, 2013

She is taking a break. She tweeted that there will be no new album this year. So we will have to quench our thirrst with Unapologetic and old albums 🙂

    • POP ROYALTY (F*** Yeah Rihanna) August 12, 2013

Being An Educated , Tech-savvy artist is always a blessing, I will Always give it to GaGa when it comes to this.

She will come off as insecure to “some” though, as if she felt the “heat” from “Roar” and blah blah blah.

      Interesting watch.

      • FAF August 12, 2013

LOL @ rihanna taking a break. where’s y’all 3rd single? What happened to “I’m out”, I mean “pour it up?” 😆

      • RICHIE_RICH August 12, 2013

@faf you’re so shady now hun….Come back to the light babe.

  34. JOHNVIDAL August 12, 2013

So some people tried to drag Mariah and her team for doing this when the woman is over 40 and it´s almost impossible for females that age to be played on radio… but truth is every single singer does it now, including all these young and “current” artists who are slaying (or we are supposed to think so) like Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake or Rihanna. Hell I say yes for Mariah or Madonna doing it if these basic b****** do it. Hell even the flop that is JLo did it with her last single too.

  35. cde August 12, 2013

I just want to know where is the fair and unbiased #Shade like you threw when MC did this exact same thing with #Beautiful?

  36. Everyone’s A Critic August 12, 2013

Love ROAR, it’s empowering to me. A little cliche, but she has never been anything but that to me, so i like it for what it is, a catchy pop song.
