I totally agree with Whitney & Celine. Both sold 30 – 50 million with different albums.
Madonna’s is debatable for me. I know she has accumulated more sales than Janet with her overall collection, so I’m not disregarding that. The thing is Janet and Madonna sold albums internationally at similar rates (in the 20 million bracket, if you don’t include Madge’s Greatest Hits package), which are lower than Whitney, Celine and Mariah’s peaks. Janet’s stats online won’t reflect that. She’s the ONLY artists that have have the same stats for well over the last 13 years. I do see your argument … & yea, it sucks! I wish the kind of treatment she’s getting on nobody!

Hmmm… I’m going to say this in my defense. I don’t want to get in my feelings about Janet today (because this is a beautiful King B post and breaking down Janet’s career and every element in it is time consuming).

Janet is clearly a pop artists mainly. She’s dabbled into different styles of music, but her vocal type caters to Pop. Her discography was very universal, but her actual sound contained mainly pop elements (just the way her brother, MJ did). If he’s pop, why would Janet not be? She was practically a female version of him to a degree.
There are better examples of artists that equally seem to have a footing in 2 genres (R&B /Pop).
Like
1) Queen Whitney (The Voice) that has half Pop & R&B hits in her catalog that’s split down the middle.
Or
2) the Queen of hits, Mariah who also has an equal amount of R&B and Pop records.
Same with
3) King B
I think people are confused sometimes about what artists are actually making Pure R&B records (like Alicia, Mary J, Usher, Toni Braxton, etc). These are R&B superstars.
Making Janet claim R&B, would be like doing the same with Rihanna. Janet obtained many #1 R&B hits, but she didn’t target the R&B charts. She just scored on both (the way MJ did).
The reason why I give Janet the QOP title as well as Madonna is because she went toe to toe with her for almost 20 years. Both women influenced the industry like no other for those that want to be called entertainers. Even after the crippling Superbowl incident their stats in Pop history are still astounding.
Both Janet & Madonna obtained #1 hits in the 80’s, 90’s & ’00’s.

Janet – All For You (2001)
Madonna – Music (2000)
Janet longest – All for You (7 weeks at #1)
Madonna’s – Take A Bow (7 weeks at #1)
Janet was the #2 Artist of the Decade in the 90’s(behind Mariah). I don’t know where Madonna came in.
Janet has 6 #1’s albums (tied with Mariah) to Madonna’s 8 (but Madonna obviously released more studio albums than Janet did). They both (Madge & Janet) have 5 that were consecutive. Barbra Streisand leads with 9.
Janet & Madonna are the MTV premiere video artists for that generation.
I could go on and on, but I understand why Janet gets excluded from these type of things. Do I think it fair? No. Are these two the most comparable artists when it comes down to this? Yes.
I’m not taking anything away from Madonna, I just feel like there’s not enough truth about the defining decades of Pop available these days. I have my theory as to why that is the case, but to each their own.
