Weigh In: Yahoo Name Top 250 Female Singers of the 20th Century

Consider your favourite artist one of the best vocalists of all time?

If so, you’ll be interested to learn of Yahoo’s brand new list, naming their Top 250 female singers of the 20th century- compiled with the aid of Rate Your Music, Wikipedia, Past perfect, Amazon, Cynamans, UGO, Listverse, Rocklist, Essence, Timout, Acclaimed Music, and Youtube.

Sure to surprise some while pleasing others, the list comes courtesy of vocal teacher/songwriter Jessica Eisenberg, responsible for the message placed above the Top 250 below!

Check it out…

“As a singer, I have been obsessing about vocalists since before I started grade school. The obsession started with Whitney Houston, Julie Andrews, Andrea McArdle, and Crystal Gayle. All of them had such different voices and I studied them meticulously.

Now, as an adult I am a songwriter, performer and vocal teacher and want to learn even more. I know there are voices that I haven’t heard that deserve to be remembered.

Researching each decade of the 20th century helped me discover some of these lost blues singers, musical theatre performers, and pop stars from yesteryear.

This list was helped in part by the following web sites: Rate Your Music, Wikipedia, Past perfect, Amazon, Cynamans, UGO, Listverse, Rocklist, Essence, Timout, Acclaimed Music, and Youtube. I hope that you enjoy discovering new singers and fighting about who should really be in the top 50.”

Kelly Rowland above Lauryn Hill? Chile

  2. Amanda Bynes December 11, 2013

I thought Beyonce is the KING or QUEEN then why isn’t she on the number 1 spot?

  3. Lovebird (LOUDER – 04.03.14) December 11, 2013

I agree with Xtina, Whitney and some of the artists in the top ten.

All I have to say is Yahoo! Hasn’t heard the recent vocals from some artists, oh and I didn’t know karaoke singers were eligible to be considered for the list. How you can call someone who hasn’t sang live since 1993 a singer is beyond me but to each his own I guess.

Also, Leona Lewis deserves to be on the top ten.

  4. *ℙᏫℙ ℝᏫᎩAℒᎿᎩ* December 11, 2013

    Irrelevant Much ?

  5. Julien December 11, 2013

Glad to see the very talented Deborah C** on this list. Tarralyn Ramsey should’ve been on it.

  6. Haha December 11, 2013

Not Christina in front of Mariah!

  7. Baduizm05 December 11, 2013

    No Rihanna? What a shock.

  8. Lovebird (LOUDER – 04.03.14) December 11, 2013

TLC are better singers that En Vogue??? WHAT????

  9. Haha December 11, 2013

@Pop Royalty its only irrelevant to you becauae Rihannas not there

  10. Lovebird (LOUDER – 04.03.14) December 11, 2013

Madonna is a better singer than Lean Rimes???

    I CAN’T

  11. QueenCeline December 11, 2013

I’m just happy that all of the singers on the list can sing.
No Rihanna, No Ciara. REAL singers.

  12. Jesso December 11, 2013

Screamtina should not be that high ewww.

  13. FAME December 11, 2013

Da f***k this list is so out of order

  14. Dean December 11, 2013

Maria Callas place in the list say pretty much everything about this list.

  15. Jesso December 11, 2013

But oh well yes yahoo you better throw that shade to certain ‘singers’ who can’t sing.

  16. Ri and ci have no talent December 11, 2013

LMAO NO RIHANNA OR CIARA. WHITNEY SHOULD BE #1

  17. BeyBeyKing December 11, 2013

The Navy won’t like this list because the only thing it cares about is TALENT, something she does not have.
Anyway, I don’t agree with the whole list but I do think that a lot of it does make sense. Not sure why Kelly is there though, I can’t think of one amazing vocal she’s given since DC’s Gospel song on Survivor.

  18. NT December 11, 2013

The list is pretty reasonable interesting to see Beyonce in the top 10 above a lot of the other vocal legends ; i disagree with Christina being placed in front of Mariah but she should definitely should be in the top 5

  19. kkkkkkkk December 11, 2013

Rihanna can’t be there anyway because she debuted in 21st century dumbass, this list is for 20th century.

Slay Xtina, she is truly the voice of our generation.

  20. cocobutta December 11, 2013

The top lot is not too bad but how can spice girls & TLC be deemed better singers than Brandy & Monica.. Messy list overall. Madonna can NOT out sing nobody even if she a superb artist

  21. Yo smoke December 11, 2013

Where’s the iconic Rihanna ? This list would’ve been a joke without Beyonce .. I’m surprise to see Christina so high ..

  22. AntoniaAlsina December 11, 2013

If they made one for dudes August would be #1.

  23. Reece Davis December 11, 2013

Eww why is Beyonce on that list? B**** is so overrated

  24. BeacHouseBritney December 11, 2013

Where is Britney? And what is Jennifer Lopez doing there?

  25. Lolz December 11, 2013

    Well done Beyonce

  26. kkkkkkkk December 11, 2013

I can’t at stupidity of some people who try to shade Rihanna but can’t read that this is for 20TH CENTURY. Do you see Gaga, Katy, Ariana Grande or girls that debuted after 2000 on the list? That’s right, educate yourself.

  27. AntoniaAlsina December 11, 2013

Mariah doesn’t even deserve to be in the top 40 anymore imo, I really feel like Rihanna could out sing her today if she wanted to.

  28. Music is me December 11, 2013

THIEFYONCE IS UGLY SHE LOOKS LIKE HER A** HUSBAND GAY-Z

  29. Rihanna stan December 11, 2013

OMG that Ella Fitzgerald video is AMAZING!!!!

  30. Lovebird (LOUDER – 04.03.14) December 11, 2013

Unfortunately I agree, I think Lana Del Rey can outsing Mariah today.

  31. Revolution December 11, 2013

I love TLC but they had the weakest vocals out of any girl group. Why are they higher than Brandy, Monica and En Vogue?

  32. KeriPatra (Queen Of R&B) December 11, 2013

Rihanna and Ciara wouldn’t have made it even if it was for the 21st century. #Fact

  33. Shadinah December 11, 2013

    Lmao no “Slayhanna”? Oopt

  34. Phillip Staton December 11, 2013

There is a female artist named AALIYAH!!!!!!!!!?????

  35. Revolution December 11, 2013

@Kkkkkkl calm down she would have been around #200 if she was there anyway.

  36. Angel December 11, 2013

This is my favorite site in the whole world! For real, i love how yall focus on the music and music only because I have never seen that video of Ella before and it’s inspired me to really take my ambitions of becoming a singer more seriously.

I thank you from the bottom of my heart for not writing about gossip or who effed who and who did what but only writing about music.

  37. Phillip Staton December 11, 2013

    AALIYAH!!!!!!

  38. Rihanna stan December 11, 2013

Rihanna would be top 5 you b****

  40. Mrs. Carter December 11, 2013

I think Yahoo was running out of female singers to put on that list. That would explain why some people made this list

  41. SexyDerulo December 11, 2013

August Alsina fans talking about vocals after that Wendy performance? Chile boom! Desrouleaux would wipe the floor with his homo thug ass.

  42. idgi December 11, 2013

That’s nice and all but I would like to see the 21st century list…. I agree with a lot in the top 10. Omg how did Jessica Simpson make it on there? Come on lmao.

  43. Mrs. Carter December 11, 2013

LMAO this list is a hot mess!!!

  44. MUSICHEAD December 11, 2013

This list is terrible. Whitney should be #1, Xtina should NOT be ranked above Mariah nor should she be in the top 10. Beyonce should not be in the top 10 and Brandy and Monica should both be top 100 (at worst) and Celine is top 5 all day long!!!

  45. MUSICHEAD December 11, 2013

Jessica might be a little slow but she can sing her ass off!

  46. VisionOfMimi December 11, 2013

I think August Alsina stans should stick to taking drugs and arranging bank robberies instead of getting involved in grown folks business.

  47. LOL December 11, 2013

LOL THIS LIST KILLED ANY CREDIBILITY IT COULD HAVE HAD WHEN IT PUT BEYONCE IN THE TOP 10 & MADONNA ON THE LIST PERIOD LMAO

  48. mk December 11, 2013

Is the list in any particular order? Damn I dont know majority of the singers but Kelly Rowland shld be in top 10.

  49. AntoniaAlsina December 11, 2013

    August ILS – R&B 1
    Mariah Carey TALG – Flop.

  50. JOHNVIDAL December 11, 2013

It´s a good list overall… but very predictable. I hoped for my faves to be in the top10… and they WERE!!! Obviously Xtina Aguilera shoudn´t be as high. Beyonce either. It´s like the most obvious for nowadays audiences won in this list.
It doesn´t have much importance anyway.

  51. KissesForKelly December 11, 2013

Queen Kelly next to the greats I see.
    #WhereIsBabyMamaAra
    #WhereIsWhoreanna

  52. Vamp Ora December 11, 2013

Well, did u read the part where they say 20th century????
Jeez, how can u be so dumb

  53. SMH December 11, 2013

This whole list is a hot ass mess. Beyonce ahead of Mary J. Blige??? GTFOH. Whoever made this list doesn’t know ish about singing.

  54. BeyWhoUWanna December 11, 2013

Excuse me John Vidal, what do you mean Beyonce shouldn’t be as high when she has still has full voice today. Does Mariah?

  55. Jamie December 11, 2013

Dead no GaGa katy or Rihanna. and Xtina above Beyonce Lmao

  56. Draggin4MrsCarter December 11, 2013

Beyonce will and always will be a better singer than Mary J. She has a bigger range and better technique and a wider catalog of songs. Imo, Beyonce deserves to be top 5 but i’m happy Queen Ella was number one.

I also want to know why Mariah Carey was even allowed to be on this list when her voice has been MIA since Clinton was in office.

  57. Molly December 11, 2013

The only list flop Rowland will ever be on.

  58. Molly December 11, 2013

In what world is Christina above Beyonce? lol

  59. BanjeeRiri December 11, 2013

The Rita stan is mad because she saw the number 20.

  60. HOTSTUFF December 11, 2013

Monica ? LMAO Xtina before Mariah Carey ? what ever with this irrelevant list!

  61. NotDeafLikeTheseStans December 11, 2013

Shakira shouldn’t be as low as she is. Her vocal range is big. I know. She is ARTISTICALLY better than the top ten artist. Beyonce…HYPE. She keeps touring the world without new music…GIVE IT UP

  62. Nostalgia1989 December 11, 2013

Cool list but what was the criteria for being put on it because some of the names there don’t make sense.

  63. Vamp Ora December 11, 2013

These singers debuted on 21st century. Dead with ur dumbass.
Anyway, Beyonce shouldn’t be above Maria Callas, but I know u won’t agree, u don’t even know what is real talent.

  64. idgi December 11, 2013

Seriously, I’m the only one mentioning we are in the 21st century? That list is probably different now if they were ever to release it. So in a way I agree with those who call the list irrelevant. Even though they’re only saying that due to the fact their faces didn’t make the list lol

  65. Nostalgia1989 December 11, 2013

By the way, could the lone Alsina supporter please find their chill. Ole boy is no vocalist and will never be respected as one.

  66. Come & get it December 11, 2013

Omg yes Selena Gomez at #31 hahaha and no Miley or Demi Lmao

  67. Why aaliyah is not being honoured December 11, 2013

They forgot aaliyah , that’s what the industry seems to be doing , forgetting aaliyah , aaliyah should have got the AMA first icon award , the music industry it pissing all over Aaliyah’s grave

  68. sorry, Im Booked December 11, 2013

Boo Boo, Try Again… Rihanna Debuted In The 21st Century!

  69. LaLopez December 11, 2013

This is b*******! Jennifer deserves to be in the T10.

  70. JanetXone December 11, 2013

So Selena Gomez is on this list? *Laughs to self.

  71. BEYHIVE_MINAJ December 11, 2013

Surprised to see Christina and beyonce in the top ten. I’m not delusional, and I will admit that they were just starting out and they hadn’t impacted the industry in any way. And why is Xtina in front of Mimi? She is one of the greatest vocalists of all time. Whitney deserved the no 1 spot IMO,but Ella is a true legend and paved the way for the icons of the late 90s and present day. Anyway,it was a good list.

  72. AntoniaAlsina December 11, 2013

Not Mariah Carey chickens calling AA a drug dealer when Mariah looks like she SWALLOWED a drug dealer.

  73. Ciara’s Prince December 11, 2013

Ciara and Rihanna aren’t there because they started in the 21st century dumbasses. get yall s*** together!!!! -__-

  74. Well-Hell December 11, 2013

Um this list is beyond full of it, Brandy and Monica should be in that top 10 Kelly Rowland should be in the top twenty along with Toni and Lauryn and Deborah C** and Tamia CeCe Winans is too low as Yolanda Adams Beyoncé should be top 20 too not ten maybe 11 but not number 10 redo please

  75. 5 December 11, 2013

Kelly Rowland before Mary J. Blige ? What kind of joke is this lmfaooooooo

  76. CiciFinnaBeABride December 11, 2013

Ciara doesn’t need this list though, she has GRAMMYS and a fiancee. Does Rihanna even have a boyfriend? Does Beyonce even have edges? Does Mariah have a diet plan? No, so stfu and leave Princess alone.

  77. RoyalKev December 11, 2013

A huge list, with 250 artists and all the haters are going to see is B E Y O N C E. Bey definitely deserves that top 10 spot! She has a powerful voice with control, range and even other rare qualities (like speed and versatility). For those of you grasping at straws complaining about Bey placing higher than Mary J, (along with Kim and Lisa from somebody’s hood), just quit it! I don’t want to put anyone down, but it’s obvious that you’re looking for any singer to make these silly comparisons.

Don’t love the list, but Nippy at #3 makes up for a few of the wrongs! Too many people are way too low (Brandy, En Vogue, Toni Braxton, etc), I don’t have time for this… This list gets a grade of a C+

  78. Come & get it December 11, 2013

yall be giving aaliyah to much credit.

  79. Come & get it December 11, 2013

Lmao at does Beyonce have edges that was hilarious.

  80. VisionOfMimi December 11, 2013

Antonia Alsina, are you mad that Elijah is a better singer than your crack head fav?

  81. Amanda Bynes December 11, 2013

    LOL @C**&GetIt
Sorry I don’t want to break your heart but they were referring to Selena Quintanilla Perez not Selena Gomez.

  82. AntoniaAlsina December 11, 2013

Nah b****, I’m mad that Mariah jacked Shamu’s swag and won’t pay homage.

  83. RoyaLorde December 11, 2013

    LMFAO LMFAO
    LMFAO LMFAO
LMFAO LMFAO. The Selena NOMez thought she had made the list when it was really Queen Selena!

Excuse me as I point and laugh at her.

  84. xedos December 11, 2013

why waste time posting this garbage?

  85. Divine beauty December 11, 2013

The obsession with QUEENara on this site is real!!!!

  86. dark horse December 11, 2013

@WhyAaliyah the industry doesn’t own aaliyah anything yall swear like she was on the level of Michael and Whitney.

  87. DIGGER BEY December 11, 2013

Lmaooo @ this list. And why oh why is PATTI VOCAL SLAYAGE LABELLE not in the Top 10?? Jlo shouldn’t even be #250. They didn’t put the wr.ong females on here. It just they’re seriously out of order. And this must be from their hey day vocals. Lmao Cause Mariah and Christina shouldn’t even be in the top 10. I’m luvin #94! She had me worried but she’s back where she belongs with the vocals .

  88. BeyWearsTheCrown December 11, 2013

Press the like button if you like my list and dislike if you dislike it.
Here is my list of the best vocalists out today.

    1. Beyonce.
    2.Beyonce
    3. Mrs Carter
    4. The wife of Rihanna’s boss.
    5. Blue Ivy’s mom.
    6. Celestine’s favorite child.
    7. Popeye’s brand ambassador.
    8. Kelly Rowland’s best friend / biggest inspiration
    9. The child of Destiny.
    10. Beyonce

  89. FentySoSnatched December 11, 2013

Like for Rihanna, dislike for Ciara.

  90. Hadley December 11, 2013

Beyonce actually has one of the best techniques ever. And i realized this when watching that x factor show. None of them could sing her songs properly and they have two good vocalists who either struggled or had to change notes. Shes also versatile she can go from singing Single Ladies to songs like Listen and I care in which duplicates instruments with her voice. Some of the legends on that list should have been higher than her, but people need to give her credit.

  91. Amanda Bynes December 11, 2013

    @BeySTEALSthecrown
No one is asking you, keep it to yourself. Beyonce is no KING or QUEEN. B**** doesn’t even have a royal blood.

  92. pat December 11, 2013

TLC ahead of the clark sisters
Kelly ahead of bran and monica

this list lost any shot of credibility it thought it had

  93. DIGGER BEY December 11, 2013

The list is bad but it isn’t sh*t. It wouldn’t been if Ciara, Britney, Rihanna, Katy, Mylie, Selena, and Kesha had made the list lmao

  94. BEYHIVE_MINAJ December 11, 2013

Ok,I’ve read the entire list again for the fifth time, and I’m discovering some of the most insane things ever.like why Aaliyah isn’t on the list. Smh ppl stay disrespecting the true legends. And for the little kids on her(@come and get it) Selena you see is the iconic Spanish singer who passed on,not the cartoon.

  95. oh yeah December 11, 2013

You think this kist is irrelevant because the fake icon rih offkey didnt make the list.. check for rihanna on the best Strippers of the yearbut she cant be classified as a singer, great or anything. Just the stripper icon award which is what i think you mean is Irrelevant.

Nelson Mandela is an Icon.! Rihanna is a Joke!

  96. DSA December 11, 2013

    YAHOO CAN SUCK MY D!!!CKKK

  97. BEYHIVE_MINAJ December 11, 2013

Ok,I need an explanation as to why The legendary Anita Baker and Queen Janet have been placed so low. This list is looking really raggedy

  98. Career Ender December 11, 2013

JohnVodal doesn’t fail to discredit Beyonce all the time

When Bey is rated highly John will come with his cheap wig mentality and 606 reasons as to why Bey is ‘basic’ and how she must win

While stanning for someone who wears shells, eggs, wheel chairs, dead babies, baboons and snakes *sigh*

  99. BrandyStan December 11, 2013

U right!! This list high unprofessional and disrespectful lol too many greats are at the middle and end of this boot-leg list
Aaliyah incredible vocalist why is she missing she needs credit for them vocals of hers along with some others missing
Jaz Sullivan too these people drunk as s*** making this list

  100. Digger ci December 11, 2013

Y’all only call Aaliyah a legend because she’s dead. How do y’all shade brandy and Monica but praise Aaliyah with her soft weak voice that sounded terrible live?

  101. dark horse December 11, 2013

How is Aaliyah a legend? because she’s dead? Like no disrespect but aaliyah wasn’t even that successful or really made any impact she aint no Whitney or Janet so expect her to go unnoticed.

  102. Missy Elliott’s lesbian lover December 11, 2013

    Brandy > Monica > Aaliyah

  103. dark horse December 11, 2013

Told yall Johns a hypocrite if that was GaGa at number 10 he’d be praising it.

  104. truth December 11, 2013

People mad at Mariah but the TRUTH is if mariah dont deserve to be on this list then neither does Whitney. Both do and did not have the voice they had when they started. The reason why they are there today is because NO ONE CAN TAKE AWAY WHAT THEY DID WHEN THEY DID IT! No matter how you bitter people on this site feel. These woman were some of the best to ever do it.
Its sad how you folks like to tear a person down because of what they cant do today. Says a lot about your life. I hope and pray non of you hit a downfall in life and people start discrediting what you were able to achieve. Assholes at its best are the people in this blog. Makes me sick

  105. dark horse December 11, 2013

Brandy is underrated she should be in top 10

  106. BrandyStan December 11, 2013

Aaliyah is considered legendary because of her vocals and her video creativity in which a lot of the people’s favs are trying to do now she was doing unique things before her time and even before Janet or Bey but the legacy she left and who she would have been in this music industry who can say that she wouldn’t dominate R&B pop ijs… If we lived to see her live in 2013 music would be changed significantly and half of this mess people that consider is music would not be what is popping at all simple as that

  107. haterofthefake December 11, 2013

Suprised Mariah Carey isn’t the Top 3 but I agree with the top 5 all incrediable vocalists 🙂

  108. Legendtina December 11, 2013

People are always trying go discredit Christina’s spot as a vocalist. She is the Voice of her Generation, this cant be denied. I see no problem with her being head of Mariah Carey. Its not the first time she has ranked ahead of her. In my opinion, Debbie Gibson and Jessica Simpson should be higher. Underrated singers. Kelly Rowland being higher than Monica and Toni Braxton is a mess as well.

  109. dark horse December 11, 2013

But Beyonce is a better vocalist then Christina #fact

  110. JANET STAN!! December 11, 2013

Aaliyah is no legend FACT. If she were alive today she would probably be in the same boat as Brandy, Monica and Mya. Let’s not!

  111. Legendtina December 11, 2013

Brandy should be higher too. In my opinion, Aaliyah was never known as a vocalist, not even in her prime. She’s remembered for her dancing and videos, but she didn’t have a special voice that we haven’t already heard in R&B. Its delusional to say she was doing things before Janet when Aaliyah was molded by her team to be like Janet. She was a label product. That doesn’t mean she wasn’t talented though.

  112. dark horse December 11, 2013

I guess if katy or gaga died today they’d be considered legends aswell.

  113. Amanda Bynes December 11, 2013

    @DARKHORSE
Katy Perry fans are not allowed to give their opinions since your fave can’t even hold a note.

  114. Bondsmen December 11, 2013

Most of the younger generation want to place the new school artist in the top ten but y’all must respect who paved the way for your favs of today. Some old school is the top of the list but quit trying to put these younger artists including Beyoncè up there with them. Another new group that is missing Destiny’s Child their vocals are sickening when they are together and as far as TLC they only had two singers but they weren’t strong singers and that’s just my opinion. The Clark Sisters should NOT be no where near the bottom of this list. Yeah they sing church music, but those girls have been slaying the most of the younger people’s favs of today and with that being said have a seat. Lol
Ciara and Rihanna are NOT strong singers at all, RiRi live, I prefer her on CD, Ciara live no comment and her CDs I’m not impressed at all

  115. Legendtina December 11, 2013

A Katy Perry fan talking about vocals? That’s cute, I’ll entertain it. Christina’s vocal range spans much wider than Beyonce’s, including a whistle register. Beyonce is a great vocalist but she’s never been on Christina’s level. But hey, maybe they can both coach Katy on correcting her pitch and working on her breathe control.

  116. dark horse December 11, 2013

Oooooooo Rihanna just scored her 13th number 1 hit

  117. Katy’s fave cat December 11, 2013

Christina can’t coach s*** because she can’t sing her damn self lol

  118. dark horse December 11, 2013

Katy pitch is fine i like Christina voice no need for the shade i just think bey is the better vocalist babe.

  119. Todd December 11, 2013

    This is a fool!!!!

  120. SLAY_HIVE December 11, 2013

Well the Queen is in the top ten *exits* 🙂 🙂

  121. dark horse December 11, 2013

Psychotic bynes fans shouldn’t give their opinion on anything tbh.

  122. Katy’s fave cat December 11, 2013

Beyonce is a much better singer than frog voice Screamtina

  123. Bondsmen December 11, 2013

I’m disagreeing with u about Bey being a better vocalist than Christina!!! Both of them great performers/entertainers but Christina has a whistle range that Bey does not possess do ya research on that one

  124. musiclover December 11, 2013

    @digger ci i agree

beyonce can sang but 11 is where she fits best

  125. Billionz December 11, 2013

F*** a whistle range that doesn’t make you better. Lalah Hathaway is a contralto with limited range but she would slay the F*** out of Christina.

  126. Molly December 11, 2013

Beyonce to me has a much prettier voice better control and range.. xtina vocals can be rough on the ears sometimes plus she oversings ALOT!

  127. SLAY_HIVE December 11, 2013

StrainTina is an overrated vocalist imo. She does the exact same adlibs in all of her songs. She is loud and strains majority of her notes. I definitely don’t agree with her being in the top ten. maybe top twenty ;). She can sing though 🙂

  128. ShitGotReal December 11, 2013

How the fuuck can Madonna be so low on the list when Ray of Light slays our faves entire discographies. Where’s Britney. Can’t see her in the list. She needed to be in the top 10.

  129. Molly December 11, 2013

@Slay_Hive i agree, she was a much better vocalist back in her younger days but now its pretty much a hit or miss with her vocals.

  130. Your p**** latino December 11, 2013

First Rihanna’s album was released in 2007, so in the 21st Century

  131. Well-Hell December 11, 2013

Some of y’all are delusional!! Brandy should be in the top 10 of new school singers since none of your favs have been called the Vocal Bible or as Whitney Houston said “class act” or have had Michael Jackson do background vocals on your album (check the credits of Full Moon on Wiki) Beyoncè is known for Uh-Oh and that’s it. This isn’t about who’s the most entertaining and not about how Whitney Houston’s voice changed or Mariah’s for that fact lol it’s about singing. Nobody is concerned with Grammys that these b****** have because most of who is on this have been snubbed for years. At the end of the day Whitney’s voice minus a Whistle register still murders the majority on this list and she didn’t have to shake her ass to sale a record nor did Brandy or Monica. Mary J, should not be down there and Kelly Rowland shouldn’t be down there above her either, but If Kelly had the right vocal training on some serious s*** your fav couldn’t touch her. Quit bringing up Rihanna, Gaga, and Katy because they aren’t true singers and definitely Ciara too. Learn vocals please because it’s more than who is relevant and who you want to be perrrfecccttt

  132. Amanda Bynes December 11, 2013

    Y’all are f****** ugly.

  133. Just Sayin December 11, 2013

Jut because someone has a bigger vocal range doesn’t make them better. Whitney has smaller range than Christina and does not have whistle register doesn’t make her inferior. Christina has one of the worst techniques of all time. She strains and screams all the time. Cant believe shes that high, he should not be in the top 10.

  134. Derrick December 11, 2013

Before JLo, Shakira, Gloria and Selena we had Lisa Lisa.. Lisa paved the way for all the JLo’s & Paula Abdul’s and should be considered for your list. She was everyone’s favorite 80s pop icon

  135. Amanda Bynes December 11, 2013

Y’all are stupid and ugly. There’s no such thing as who’s the better vocalist or better vocal cords. Every musician has it’s OWN unique sound and has their own set of vocal problem so you can’t compare their vocal range to other musician.

  136. Brandy-Stan December 11, 2013

This list is trying it llab!!! Bey has great technique but she isn’t the greatest. Can she sing yup, but she’s not the greatest. Can Brandy sing? Yes, but not the greatest considered being called vocal bible by everybody in the industry Monica can sing but not the greatest Mariah can sing but not the greatest even though she used to have a whistle
Chanté Moore has a relevant whistle register that has not went away and she can sing too but I don’t see her here smh

  137. Really Now?! December 11, 2013

All I’ve been seeing from these comments is how Beyoncè is perfect miss me with that crap!
She screams too it just sounds desirably better than Christina lol but a whistle does give a plus especially for singers because the majority of them always want to do it
Karen Clark Sheard incredible vocalist from the Clark sisters still slaying and she in her 50’s I need y’all to stop discrediting the greats of this industry. Quit imperfect people as perfect thats a waste of time.
Some of you don’t know music at all yall up here bringing who got more Grammys and number hits and more awards thats irrelevant when we talking about flat out singing

  138. Whoops!! December 11, 2013

Someone pointed out quit comparing the musical talents each of these women’s bring to the table
I agree it gets draining and that’s why people don’t get to enjoy music anymore at all. Some s*** out here on the radio is annoying as f*** and needs to be banned. Pretty much the music of today don’t have meaning like it did when people weren’t just jumping on what just came out utterly music has died in a sense

  139. chica December 11, 2013

Any list that doesn’t say Mariah#1, Whitney #2 or Whitney #1 and Mariah #2 isn’t worth the paper it’s written on.

  140. DOSSOME December 11, 2013

    Mariah,Whitney,Celine,Barbara,Aretha,Patti>>>>>>>>>>Everybody else…

When the 21st century list is compiled somewhere around the year 2113,do you think Rihanna or Katy or Taylor Swift will make the list?.

As far as singers go,Whitney>>>Mariah>>>>Everyone else.As far as vocalists go,Mariah>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>EVERYBODY ELSE

  141. FAF December 11, 2013

mjb over Clark sisters ? Bye

Beyonce over Etta James ? What type of bottom made this list ?

And jelly Roland didn’t even sing lead Letoya>>>>

  142. FAF December 11, 2013

And if ciara was a baby mama she’d still get more publicity than jelly Aka single black female ciara impersonator from the hair to the wardrobe and producers

  143. JOHNVIDAL December 11, 2013

    I swear people can´t read!
What the hell does any artist losing their voice (or being dead for example)have to do with who has/had the best voice??????? It´s not about who still has their voice, it´s about who is/were better. Damn these kids have huge problems whe in comes to reading.
Also, no, Beyonce shouldn´t be top10, the woman that made this list said this is about all time best voices, give me a break!!! Beyonce is good, better than any pop star right now vocally, but never was this special to be there. Why bring Gaga to this? If Gaga were top 10 in this I would be LMAO! Gaga can sing but it ends there vocally. I´m not delusional like most of you.
Who the hell can say Brandy or Monica or Aaliyah (lol) should be top10????? LOL We´re talking about legendary voices, of all time.
These lists are always going to be irrelevant anyway cos it´s impossible to classify voices like this. That´s why I prefer lists who talk about the best “whatever” without giving the order.

  144. JOHNVIDAL December 11, 2013

    @dossome is the truth!

  145. SLAY_HIVE December 11, 2013

    @FAF

Babe you are so delusional. “Everyone is trying to be Ciara” smh lol

  146. SLAY_HIVE December 11, 2013

    @John
“Beyonce shouldn´t be top10, the woman that made this list said this is about all time best voices, give me a break!!!”

Why shouldn’t Beyonce be in the top te? I can understand Mariah/whitney being there.. We all know they have legendary voices. No debate there, but besides Beyonce, in the last ten years, who has delivered vocally amongst the current pop/R&B girls.

Beyonce is known for her voice just as much as she is know for performing. Beyonce’s voice is unique and there is no other singer that can imitate her voice/vocal ability. Her range is superb, and her technique is damn near flawless. Being one of the top and most recognizeable artists of this generation, Beyonce belongs in the top.

  147. Matthew Charlery Smith December 11, 2013

I didn’t see Donna Summer or Lisa Fisher on here. Did I miss them? No Rosie Gains (Dueted with Prince on Diamonds & Pearls) or Weather Girls either? Any list that places Christina above Mariah cannot be taken seriously. Beyoncé should not be so high at all. Top 30 maybe. Janet Jackson is much better than Madonna and so is her sister, Robbie.

  148. idgi December 11, 2013

Its weird stans here always discredit Xtina, if you want to put your fave on a pedastal that’s fine but notto even acknowledge she can sing makes some of you sound delusional. If you listen to the ballads on Bionic such as I Am and All I Need her vocals are more gentle and softer even on Back To Basics – Save Me From Myself is raw. Lotus has Best Of Me. She can sing powerfully but can tone it down. A lot of artist aren’t that versatile, nor can hold a note. Yes she’s not technically the best but it doesn’t mean she can’t sing. Also I think someone said Xtina has a whistle register? She doesn’t just a very high falsetto. Big difference between the two.

  149. JOHNVIDAL December 11, 2013

    @slay_hive
Even if she were one of the best from the last 10 years like you say… she shouldn´t make ther top10 in a list that is representing an entire century!!! No way. Sorry. Xtina either of course.

  150. My Forehead Tho December 11, 2013

This list is laughable. Christina should not be ahead of Mariah and should be right after J.LO. While her tone is beautiful, everything else isn’t. Beyonce, being one of the best technical vocalist of all times and the best vocalist of her generation, should be in the top 7, if not 5.

Shakeria, Mary ‘stays out of tune’ blidge, and TLC should not be before Monica and Brandy etc.

  151. SLAY_HIVE December 11, 2013

    @John

Sorry, with a list full of irrelevants and one-hit wonders. The list is a complete mess anyways! Beyonce is high on the list, where she belongs. I wouldn’t care if she was in the top 30. Her voice is being recognized by a CREDIBLE source.

  152. SLAY_HIVE December 11, 2013

Oh and i CAN’T get over Christina being ahead of Mariah. They need to re-do this list, and take 150 names off. kiii

  153. Tanesha Wiggins December 11, 2013

Slay_Hive I agree! I’m so sick of people trying to discredit Beyonce! That b**** has been slaying since 1997 when No No No was released and she’s constantly growing. Christina is hyped because she’s a white girl who mimics the “soulful” sound, but she falls short imo. She almost always over sings and strains. America is still pissed with her for ruining the National Anthem. I’m not saying Beyonce is the best, but she’s well deserving. People need to start letting the contemporary girls do their thing and let the legends enjoy their millions and accolades.

  154. SLAY_HIVE December 11, 2013

    @TANESHA

EXACTLY! I agree with everything you said, especially the Christina comment! Beyonce is a damn good singer, has been praised often. People let their hate for her, cloud their judgement.

  155. Phillip Staton December 11, 2013

Seriously this list is ridiculous!!!! What about Aaliyah, Deborah C**, Tamia, The Dixie Chicks. I don’t see pinks name either. Where’s fantasia or jennifer hudson. Some of these woman on this list are Actresses who song just one song. That’s not be a female singer with records it’s called being an actress having to sing a song for a movie. YAHOO YOU NEED TO DO BETTER!!!!!

  156. idgi December 11, 2013

I don’t know why people are bitching about Beyonce being in the top 10 like she can’t sing either. Who the f*** are you people listening to? Lmao, Bey can sing and if anything she should of placed in top 5. Her voice is out of this world… IDGI with you bunch of flops.

  157. THE GREAT LACEFRONCE. December 11, 2013

LOL. This list is irrelevant. It’s by a random Yahoo! contributor. What made the list laughable was seeing THIEVINGonce in the top 10 with legends like WHITNEY.THIEVINGonce LIPS most of the time & her vocals are AVERAGE.

  158. Rebecca Black > Lady Flopga December 11, 2013

Rebecca Black IS QUEEN and should be and ought to be #1. #FACT

  159. Michael December 11, 2013

As much as I think Christina is a b****, she does deserve a spot on this list. Top 10? Maybe. Top 20? Definetely. Above Mariah? Hell to the no! Christina has had very good live performances lately, and if you’ve been watching her on the Voice this season, girl can sing! But Mariah is one of the people who inspired her, and she does not rank better then Mariah.

  160. Heartless December 11, 2013

Irrelevant list. Every year some deluded people chose to make this kind of lists not realizing that we don’t give a F”’k.

  161. Mark111 December 11, 2013

Eh, this list is trash and doesn’t mean crap. It’s someone else opinion people. For one, Aaliyah isn’t on here, a person and her team single handed changed the whole genre. Not Brandy, not Monica, but Aaliyah. That’s why their music sounds so dated and Aaliyah’s is still fresh to this day.

  162. Heartless December 11, 2013

Can you do all of us immense favor and shut up? Your comments are so stupid and delusional. It’s really embarrassing to see adult person have such a wrong point of view.

  163. ENOUGH ONIKA (NEW & IMPROVED) December 11, 2013

    Where’s Rihanna at??

  164. DIGGER BEY December 11, 2013

This Always Pressed TROLL @ The Great Piece of Sh*t……What makes your delusional idiotic comment laughable. Is out of 250 Women. Your raggedy ass name drops only THE QUEEN all mad lmao. Get it thru your head . You can’t STOP THE QUEEN! Shes on the list because many industry insiders put her there and not ur fav. Please learn some sense.

  165. mc the place 2 be December 11, 2013

    christina the better singer
beyonce the better vocalist theres a difference look it up 😉

  166. MC!! December 11, 2013

lol at beyonce fans thinking she’s a 20th century vocalist beyonce sounded horrible and amateur at best when dc first 2 albums came out and her first cd came out in 2003? doesn’t that make her a 21 century star? anyway Ella deserves to be #1 and I would be Whitney Mariah and Celine to be 2,3,4 in whatever ordern the influence they have singers like xtina beyonce and jhud wouldn’t know how to use their voice to its full potential.

  167. pat December 11, 2013

sorry, but her voice is very easy to imitate…and not super unique..tiffany evans sounds a lot like her in “i’ll be there” and Claudette Ortiz’s (see “Simply Amazing”) tone and vibrato is naturally very similar to beyonce’s …lots of girls who grew up on her imitate her very well actually

  168. Haha December 11, 2013

Yall can bash Beyonce all you want shes there and you will deal. Average singers don’t get all the acclaim she gets now suck it up and deal.

  169. Haha December 11, 2013

    Same goes for Xtina

  170. Haha December 11, 2013

@MC but how does she sound NOW. You’re always throwing shade at Beyonce I think you’re an undercover Navy.

  171. LA LA December 11, 2013

I like the fact that Faith Evans and Deborah C** are in this. Underrated talent.

Aaliyah didn’t have a loud strong voice but everyone does know she has a signature and that is her Angelic vocals. Soft, S***, and Great. And she didn’t even get the chance to hone and do more with her voice like the others. RIP Legend!

SMH at people that think you need to sing loud to be named a great singer but anyways good list! 🙂

  172. Anne December 11, 2013

All of my favs made the list with two, Aretha & Beyoncé, in the top ten. Also glad Teena Marie, my other fav, made the list. Pretty good list. Glad to see Stephanie Mills and Deniece Williams also.

  173. Jessie December 11, 2013

The list is pretty irrelevant but its funny how irrelevant lists still make people seethe when it has anything to do with Mrs Carter.

  174. Jake December 11, 2013

None of the singers of today can outsing Mariah , maybe Ariana obviously but that’s it , not even Christina or Beyoncé and I’m a Beystan so that says a lot …
Now why is Christina higher than Mariah AND Céline?
And Shakira and Kelly Rowland topping Mary J …
The SHADE to Jlo tho , they could’ve put her at 247 or so but no 250 that is mean , I like Jlo especially after that tribute she did at the AMA she’s an icon leave her alone same to Janet .
    And Brandy 200 REALLY?
Where is Etta James I don’t see her …
    Beyoncé slay!

  175. Jojoagape December 11, 2013

Where is Chante Moore; her voice is still flawless. She should be top 10. Also Kelly Price? Tamia? Keke Wyatt? Why is Faith Evans so low. I’m happy she placed in the top 50% but come on! And don’t start throwing sales in. This is best vocalists.

  176. T. Williams December 11, 2013

    # Girl bye. This list is a joke. BTW Beyonce would never be able to hold a candle to Mary J. Blige, EVER!!! Mary and Mariah are legends. Beyonce would never be mentioned with those greats!!

  177. J.E December 11, 2013

In the world you are living. Any human being knows that. I like beyonce, but let us try to be honest. Christina Aguilera is way better than her vocally speaking.

  178. Straships December 11, 2013

Beyonce’s voice is better than Christinas.

  179. T. Williams December 11, 2013

How the hell is Mary J. Blige listed at 159, when she’s not only the mentioned with the greats such as Aretha, Whitney, Patti, Mariah, Celine, etc…. She’s not only a great singer, but she’s one of the most diverse singers of all time. She also been rated in the top 100 greatest singers of all time male/female, by sources that actually matter such as Rolling Stone, Vh1, Time etc…, enough said, she’s the reigning queen of HipHop Soul/ R&B. Also, why the hell is Toni Braxton so far back. This list is a freakn hot mess!

  180. T. Williams December 11, 2013

First off technical is not always the best. Mary is a soul singer. Mary can sing a note off key and still sound good, point blank. Mary slays anyone u can put up

  181. Josh December 11, 2013

Madonna at 210, who ever did this has lost there mind, no matter what any one thinks Madonna is the #1 female artist of all time, the #1 global solo artist of all time, the higgest grossing solo touring artist of all time, this is a joke.

  182. J.E December 11, 2013

last time i read, Celine told in times that Christina is the greatest vocalist. and expectedly, mariah wont admit the same coz she is a jelous B. she hates everyone that threatens her. Soon on news, she will b**** out Ariana.

  183. NAVY COMMANDER December 11, 2013

Mary J. Blige set a record today. “A Mary Christmas” sold 51,000 copies this week and entered the top 10 album chart! “A Mary Christmas” is Blige’s 12th Top 10 album, which is the most of any African-American female solo artist in chart history.

  185. Tasiandee December 11, 2013

Where is Fantasia and Jill Scott?

  186. ILOVEJAMESDEAN December 11, 2013

Christina Aguilera placing above Mariah Carey and Celine is insane but forgivable.. But placing Patti LaBelle at #28 is a HEINOUS CRIME!! Patti should’ve been in the top 3.

    Crappy list.

  187. credits December 11, 2013

Brandy and monica should have been closer, if not ahead of kelly Rowland.

  188. quetta December 12, 2013

So we only see beyonce? Anyway, I laughed as soon as I saw jessica simpson.

  189. Chocha_Pelua December 12, 2013

BRANDY should be at least top 20 along with Tony Braxton & Lalah Hathaway, the author of this list has absolutely no musical authority to proclaim this list order is relevant or important, there us no merit, justification or logical reasoning for most of the list = disparate

  190. Theman December 12, 2013

Mariah/Whitney Whitney/Mariah >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Christina has a beautiful voice, but the artistry/technique yeah…… I get the whole Ella/Aretha thing, it’s like they kind of have senority.. This list is irrelevant..

  191. LALA December 12, 2013

You do not have to look far to know this list The world’s dumbest list!!!
Where is Amy Winehouse and Adele?

  192. NYC December 12, 2013

MONICA and TONI BRAXTON should have definitely been way higher. Smh at you all coming for Beyonce..please! She’s one of the BESTvocalist!..please just stop hating.

  193. Love yourself first. December 12, 2013

My only qualms are that, EnVogue, Monica, Toni Braxton and Deborah C** aren’t ranked higher, along with Christina Aguilera being ranked above Mariah and Beyonce.

  194. Love yourself first December 12, 2013

And at Christina being ranked higher then Celine, come on now.

  195. leon December 12, 2013

20th century does not include year 2000 christina wasnt s*** at that time mariah and celine owned her ass at that time enovge was awsome. this list needs to be reviewed

  196. Dutch December 12, 2013

This is ridiculous. After the first 3 I stopped watching. Christina May be known for being a great singer, screaming, straining, and do a bunch of barking runs isn’t singing. She has no place being above like 150 of those singers, quite possiblyt he bottom. Yam Sumac, Toni Braxton, Patti Labelle, and Anit Baker should be light years higher

  197. Benn de la fuente December 12, 2013

    1. Whitney Houston
    2. Mariah Carey
    3. Celine Dion
    4. Christina Aguilera
    5. Toni Braxton
    6. Leona Lewis
    7. LeAnn Rimes
    8. Jessica Simpson
    9. Lea Michelle
    10. Leona Lewis
That’s my relevant top 10 best female vocalist and voices

  198. Touché December 12, 2013

    11. Maria Callas? The fact that she was not even put in the top three is just truly shameful. What exactly is this list suppose to be based on? It’s called the “Top 250 female singers of the 20th century”; does that mean it’s based on impact or vocal ability? Either way, Christina and Beyonce still shouldn’t even be close to the top ten.In fact, a pretty significant amount of people shouldn’t even be here such as Jessica Simpson (etc.). I’m still puzzled with the fact that they would rather put someone like Kelly Rowland instead of Lisa Fischer.

  199. TDR December 12, 2013

I actually do trust each of the principles you could have introduced on your submit. There’re really persuasive and can undoubtedly function. On the other hand, this discussions are too quick to start. May just you want stretch these individuals a tad from next time? Just posting.

This is the perfect site for anybody who wishes to find out
about this topic. You understand a whole lot its
almost hard to argue with you (not that I personally
would want to…HaHa). You certainly put a brand new spin on a subject that’s been written
about for decades. Excellent stuff, just excellent!

I visited multiple sites but the audio quality for audio songs existing at this site
    is genuinely fabulous.

  206. Diego December 24, 2014

The best singer is SARAH BRIGHTMAN with Maria Callas, this top is a aberration.

  207. That b**** September 10, 2015

Christina Aguilera and Whitney Houston belong in them spots. I don’t care what any one says they sound the same to me. They are the best I agree with this list some other singers should have higher spots but Aguilera and Houston really out sing everybody on this list.

  208. Anne Kay July 7, 2024

Well this certainly wouldn’t be my list. You only score on one thing I agree on no.1 – Ella Fitzgerald. Where’s Dusty Springfield. 250 singers without her is not worth anything.
